Toyota: Moving Forward Slower Remember how Toyota said they are delaying the launch of the Tundra amid quality concerns? Well, that ain't the only one they're going to take their time with. The next Sienna, Solara and Avalon are models that could be subject to longer development time in order for Toyota to ensure they get it right the first time. The extra development time could delay the launches of these products by two to three years. Do you think Toyota decided to take heed of my words? (See "Toyota: Moving Forward...Entirely Too Fast" for elaboration.) Read "Toyota may delay launch of new models" @ Yahoo

It's really a small car...really no bigger than a Miata...and it's a four seater. Test drove one...those back seats are TINY! Smaller, methinks than even a Porsche 911 or MGB-GT.

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 10, 2012 Lexus is in the middle of refreshing their entire lineup, giving them a bold look and some sport. So far, Lexus has unveiled the new GS and ES, and a refreshed RX. Coming up is the LS and following behind is the next IS. ''When you're a challenger brand and you're No.4 [in sales], you can't afford to be evolutionary,'' said Lexus Australia corporate marketing manager, Peter Evans to Drive.com.au. So what are we expecting with the new IS? Exterior design will have Lexus’ now trademark spindle grille wrapped in a coupe-like sedan. The interior will have a richer and more upmarket feel. As for the next IS' b…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 7, 2013 Toyota has announced that the FJ Cruiser will be heading into the sunset after the 2014 model year. But before it does that, Toyota has introduced a special edition of the FJ Cruiser called the Ultimate Edition. The Ultimate Edition begins with a “Heritage Blue” paint job and white painted front grille surround as an homage to the iconic FJ40 Land Cruiser. Under the skin lies a number of parts from Toyota Racing Development (TRD) including an off-road suspension, Bilstein shocks with remote reservoirs, beefier front skid plate, and sixteen-inch simulated beadlock wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich off-road ti…

Toyota is recalling 482,000 Prius and Lexus CT 200h models for an issue with the side curtain airbags. According to Toyota, the hybrids use air bag inflators composed of two chambers welded together. Some vehicles may have a crack where the weld is. Over time, the crack can grow and cause the pieces to separate. "If an inflator separates, the CSA could partially inflate, and, in limited circumstances, one or both sections of the inflator could enter the interior of the vehicle," the company said in a statement. The models involved include, 2010 - 2012 Lexus CT 200h 2010 - 2012 Toyota Prius 2010 - 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In The fix involves dealers installin…

Rumorpile - How Toyota Got It Sportiness Back William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 20, 2011 Toyota, the company best known for their best selling and boring Camry is going to their darker side. Apparantly stalling (which most commonly happens on highways) isn't enough of a safety issue for to force a recall (WTF?): http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9686049/ As the article states, the electric motor will allow the cars to safely pull over. What about when I take a left in front of oncomming vehicles? Or perhaps when I'm passing someone? I'm not too keen on this just being a notification and not a recall..

note: I am only posting this because of the outlandish question at the beginning of the article and as another example of the continuing media obsession with toyota. business week from the article...... "Now, I may receive some heat and email about this, but after almost half a century in the U.S., multi-billions of dollars invested in every state in the union, millions of very satisfied customers, seven factories, thousands of employees, isn't it time to stop calling Toyota an import brand? It may have come from Japan, but it is now an American brand that's almost iconic."

Toyota lags General Motors in second-quarter sales Associated Press | Link to Original Article @ Detroit News TOKYO -- Toyota slipped behind General Motors in global sales in the second quarter but retained its lead for the first half of the year, numbers showed today, as the two companies jostle for the title of world's biggest automaker. The figures -- and sales growth rates -- indicate that Toyota could overtake GM as the No. 1 automaker, a title the U.S. giant has held for 76 years. Typically, rankings are determined by full-year production figures, not sales, so that distinction will have to wait until data is tallied for the entire year. Toyota Motor Corp. said…

As the Toyota Supra continues its slow march to production, the automaker is considering adding another sports car that may revive an iconic nameplate. "We want to have Celica back, we want to have the MR2 back," said Masayuki Kai, Assistant Chief Engineer on the Supra project. The biggest was Supra. Supra was number one, the biggest demand from the market. Now that we've brought Supra back, what will come next depends on the market needs." Kai suggested that nothing is set in stone, but did hint that the Celica could be an all-wheel drive performance coupe. The MR2 could keep its mid-engine layout if a business case could be made. There lies within th…

Another N.A. plant for Toyota? Count on it Mark Rechtin | | Automotive News / April 3, 2006 - 6:00 am LOS ANGELES -- Expect still another Toyota assembly plant in North America. Toyota Motor Corp.'s North American planning group is evaluating the company's North American sales plan for 2010 and beyond. The group's early conclusion: More manufacturing capacity will be needed beyond the five assembly plants operating and two under construction. "We have been consistent, conservative and steady. But it does make sense" to add capacity beyond what the company has already announced, says Steve Sturm, vice president of North America planning for Toyota Motor Sales U.…

Toyota officials under investigation for recall negligence The Associated Press is reporting that three Toyota officials are under criminal investigation for allegedly avoiding a recall for eight years, during which time the defective part in question may have caused an accident. The story goes like this. On August 12, 2004, five people were injured in a head-on crash in Japan that was caused when the steering of a 1993 Toyota Hilux Surf failed. Toyota then carried out a small recall in October of 2004 for 330,000 Hilux Surf SUVs built between 1988 and 1996 for a part used in the steering system that could fail. The Hilux Surf that caused the accident was built in 1993.…

BusinessWeek Online Toyota Builds A Truck Even Bubba May Love Friday February 3, 3:59 pm ET By David Kiley When Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM - News) Corp. engineers visited South Texas to ask locals what they wanted in a full-size pickup, the out-of-towners got a quick education in priorities. Sure, the truck had to be big and powerful, but it also needed Texas-size brakes to stop three-plus tons of horses, hay, gear, and trailer from taking out a corral fence or barn post. Toyota listened and learned. And at the Chicago Auto Show on Feb. 9, it will fire its boldest shot yet into the already wobbly defenses of Detroit's auto makers -- taking the wraps off the first full-siz…

I warned about this sometime back. With SUV and pickup sales falling like they have there's probably nothing GM could have done within the last year or so to prevent this. Had they done with the Cobalt back in 2004 what they've done with the Malibu (competitive fuel economy, leading styling, continuing big ad campaign) things might be different. Although not the only reason for the loss in sales leadership, the continued investment in fuzzy brands and models at the expense of Chevrolet, no doubt, has not helped. GM must get its branding "house" in order or we may never see Chevy at the top again. http://freep.com/article/20081230/BUSINESS01/812300344/1014

With the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal hanging a dark cloud over the fuel, many automakers are considering whether or not they want to continue with diesel. Karl Schlicht, executive vice-president of Toyota Europe tells Autocar the company is wondering whether or not they should stop offering diesels. He uses the example of the Yaris Diesel. At the moment, the option makes "up less than 10%” of total sales for Europe. Dropping this model is a real possibility. “I think that anyone looking at investing in a new diesel plant, which might have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, will have to look long and hard at whether they would get payback,” said Schlicht. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 31, 2012 After teasing us with a photo last week, Lexus has unveiled the new LS sedan at a event in San Francisco, CA last night. The old saying of "the more things change, the more the stay the same" plays very well into in the LS. Starting with the exterior, the new LS carries the same profile as the old one, but Lexus did make some changes to bring it line with their current lineup. That includes a redesigned front end that includes Lexus' spindle grille and a set of new LED headlights, and a changed back end which includes a new trunk lid and a new bumper. Underneath the sheet metal, the LS' wheelbase has grown…

Toyota OK With Losing No.1 Spot William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 13, 2011 Since 2007, Toyota has held the title of being the world's largest automaker. However, quality problems would cause sales to drop during 2009 and 2010. Toyota would blame the rapid growth they experienced over the past few years. Then the earthquake hit Japan in March, crippling production of vehicles and causing Toyota lose they No.1 position. Currently, Toyota predicts their global sales for the fiscal year will stand at 7.24 million, a drop of 1%. Toyota doesn't seem to mind losing the No.1 spot at all. I also love how the PR spin machine makes sure to mention how a SUPPLIER provided these frames. I'm sure the supplier was allowed to build them to their own engineering specs!

According to an article in Automotive News, Toyota plans to move the Tundra and Tacoma to a shared platform, internally called "F1". The platform is to be used globally and will require a bit of modularity. The platform is said to be nearing completion and the next Tundra could be debuting for the 2021 model year. The Tacoma will likely join later as it was redesigned in 2015 and given a refresh for 2020 at the Chicago Auto Show along with a bunch of other TRD models like the Sequoia TRD Pro. For US consumption, all Tundras and most Tacomas are built at the company's San Antonio, Texas plant. Moving to a single platform would make things easier and cheaper o…

The top is a tough place to be. Just ask Toyota, which is now facing charges of worker right abuses, including the use of sweat shops and human trafficking. As we've reported before, Japan even has a word for being overworked to death: karoshi. Toyota plants are not immune to this stress-related disease, as workers at its plants have indeed suffered death due to working too hard. These facts have caught the attention of The National Labor Committee, which has an entire report worked up that alleges Toyota over-works and under-pays its Japanese employees and has ties to various unsavory Dictators. It's also been well established that Toyota does not want its American workf…

Scion has been called Toyota's experimental division as it allows Toyota to try new products and ideas (although it hasn't been used for this in a few years). Now with this, you would think Toyota would introduce some new hybrid or electric vehicle. But Green Car Reports reports that it will not likely happen anytime soon. Scion chief Doug Murtha tells Green Car Reports the brand is still maintaining its focus on providing vehicles for those under 35, a group that isn't quite ready to spend the cash for these type of powertrain technologies. “People think that this would have a lot of appeal with our target audience; and it absolutely does, and the environmental benefit…

The automaker was able to bounce back in 2012 after the earthquake and tsunami rocked Japan last year and a large amount of recalls that caused them to lose the largest automaker title in 2011. Toyota and its subsidiaries delivered 9.75 million vehicles last year, ahead of General Motors which delivered 9.29 million vehicles and Volkswagen which delivered 9.09 million vehicles. Toyota recalls double Company blames tougher reporting standards. By Ken Thomas ASSOCIATED PRESS Friday, December 02, 2005 Toyota Motor Corp., which is close to overtaking General Motors Corp. as the world's largest automaker, saw its number of recalled vehicles in the United States double so far in 2005, according to government records. Toyota's increase came as the number of autos ordered to be returned to dealerships for repairs fell considerably this year. According to the Rumorpile, Toyota is working on bringing back the Venza, a car that went out of production after 2015. The original Venza did not sell very well, partially due to its wagon-like shape and also relatively high pricing. It also lacked any off-road pretense that typically comes with a crossover. The problem for Toyota is that there is a large Venza sized gap in their SUV lineup between the RAV-4 and Highlander. This time around, the Venza would ditch the wagon looks and instead be a true crossover along the lines of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda Passport, and Ford Edge. There is a possibility that the Venza would come in only hybrid form using the s…

I'm sure they were planning this all along since we all know the Big 3 were the only ones blindsided by the rapid increase in oil and gas prices. That's not a knock on Toyota but on those that think GM, Ford and Chrysler were the only ones that didn't see this coming! The fact is, nobody predicted oil and gas prices would rise that quickly and force that rapid of a permanent shift in the market.

After offering $1500 to dealers to sweeten the deal of base Tundras to customers who may use them for business reasons, they have added a $2000 incentive for dealers "to better motivate them to purchase the new Tundra for use as a parts delivery truck." The Toyota dealers probably want a Sierra. A little easier on the eyes if you have to stare at it every day, and from what I hear, the GM trucks are safer too. http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070316/toyota_offering.html?.v=1

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 31, 2012 Lexus is in the middle of refreshing their lineup. So far, it has unveiled all-new generations of the GS and ES sedans and revised versions of the LX and RX SUVs. Next up is the LS flagship. Automobile Magazine got their hands onto some spy shots of the next generation LS undergoing some testing. Lexus must have missed a class at camouflage U since we can clearly make out the LS' new front end. The front includes Lexus’ new spindle grille and a set of LED headlights flanking either side. The rest of the LS appears to take on a more evolutionary route. The profile seems to carry the same look, albeit sli…

But that isn't stopping details of the new vehicles from leaking out. Autocar is reporting today that the FT-86 will have a curb weight close to 1,100 kg, which is about 2,425 lbs. To put that into prospective, the Hyundai Genesis coupe is 800 lbs heavier when equipped with it's turbo-4. Source: Autocar

Jean Reno, is currently working for Toyota to try and get Japanese kids to drive again, particularly sports cars. Noble effort. Also, he's Doraemon, the coolest man in the known universe. So with this effort, what do you think of Toyota's attempt to get youth to drive again and buy cars? Should the rest of the auto makers also spend more time on courting youth to drive again?

Yesterday I was on my way back from a delivery when I new Tundra passed by on the main road I was turning onto. It was loaded with 2 queen mattresses tied to the top of the bed with some stuff under it in the bed itself and the tailgate down. I was thinking to myself "Huh, someone's actually using it for it's purpose. But a second later I noticed that the tailgate seemed warped. Curious, I turned onto the road and followed it a little ways instead of going down left side of the fork in the road I went right (the way it was going). I thought may be it was an illusion, since the outer sheetmetal is rounded...but looking at it I saw that inside part with the bedliner did i…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 3, 2012 Besides hybrid powertrains, Toyota's powertrain line has been lacking some key features that competitors are now offering. Those features include direct-injection, Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT), and turbochargers to balance performance and fuel economy. According to Autoweek, Toyota will be adding those features to their lineup over the next few weeks. At the moment, Toyota employs direct-injection in the Scion FR-S, Lexus GS, and LS: But in the next two years, Toyota will introduce two new engines, 2.5L Atkinson cycle engine for hybrids (Next Year) 2.0L turbocharged (2014) Toyota wil…

G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com Yesterday Toyota announced a 690,000 truck recall for the Toyota Tacoma truck covering 2005 to 2011. Toyota notified NHTSA that they would be recalling Tacoma's with 3 or 4 rear leaf spring systems due to them fracturing due to stress or corrosion. If this happened and the truck was continued to be operated, it could move out of position and puncture the fuel tank causing leaks and potential fire. The Turds new V8 Scroll to the bottom and it looks like the 5.3 still have more power. Toyota also hopes more people opt for the more efficient V8 versus the hoggish 5.7. Even to a GM fan this is good news Toyota is offering another pussy mid-level motor. Once GM gets the six speed autos in all 5.3's Toyota will really have something to cry about. Interesting news tho.

Original story HERE While I am no fan of Toyota, I find it extremely funny that people would somehow expect Toyota to NOT sell full size trucks and SUV's. They are in business to make money and there is a lot of money to be made in the full size truck/SUV arena. To think they would abandon that market because they are a green company is just absurd.

Back in August, we reported that Toyota was possibly considering dropping in a diesel for its full-size Tundra pickup. "The diesel engine is something that is on our evaluation list. Hybrid technology is something that is on our evaluation list. Either one of those alternatives could deliver some pretty good real world fuel economy,"said Rick LoFaso, Toyota's corporate manager for light trucks. "I think Cummins would bring instant name recognition and obviously they are a leader in diesel engine technology. That is not the first time we would have a tie up with somebody else." Well it seems Toyota has possibly made a decision and is turning to Cummins for help. Wards A…

Toyota's Tj Cruiser concept is an interesting one. It takes elements of a van and SUV, and mashes them up into a capable and practical vehicle. Toyota in a press release announcing the concept hinted that it could go into production by saying it would be based on their TGNA modular platform, feature a hybrid powertrain, and have the choice of front or all-wheel drive. According to Autocar, Toyota is serious about possibly bringing the Tj Cruiser to production. Design chief Hirokazu Ikuma told the outlet that if the concept gets enough of a positive reaction from those attending the Tokyo Motor Show, it may move on to the next step of taking this vehicle to various co…

In other news in Europe, Toyota's partner Peugeot will likely allow Toyota to use some of its platform such as the very Epsilon-like platform used by the 407 and the very Chi-like platform currently used by the 607. What does this mean? That the the next gen Yaris and Corolla will get handling and suspension help from the French. More interesting is the fact that these euro-platforms will lead to Toyota finally having a Camry and an Avalon that have good handling. The 2012 Camry,ES, & Rav4 will likely be on the 407-platform. The next Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, and possilbly the next Tacoma will likely be on the 607-platfrom. This will mean several things. GM must …

Last week we reported that Toyota and Suzuki are forming an alliance to share technology and small-car platforms between the two companies. The deal, however, looked great for Suzuki but with not much in it for Toyota. Today brings some clarity to the arrangement. India is currently the 4th largest new car market and is expected to leapfrog Japan to number 3 in the near future. Being such a large and growing market has outsiders clamoring to get in, but one company is already there in a big way. Suzuki's local subsidiary Maruti accounts for 46 percent of the sub-contienent's new-vehicle sales. We reported earlier that Suzuki agreed to provide Toyota with two comp…

Prius Production Increase Story. By MarketWatch LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Toyota Motor Corp. Toyota has decided to boost production of its Prius hybrid from an initial plan of 42,000 to 43,000 units per month to around 50,000 units, Kyodo News reported Wednesday, citing company officials. To meet the increase, the company will ask employees at two factories producing the Prius -- one in the city of Toyota and another run by an affiliated parts maker in the city of Kariya -- to work overtime, the report said. The latest issue of Wheels has an article amongst its Car of the Year feature detailing an accident that occurred during testing. They were testing the new Kluger (Highlander) along a gravel left-hand bend at 100km/h at the Lang Lang testing ground (a bend they use to test high-speed stability, and which they've used with countless other cars). They had two Klugers, both with ESP, one FWD and one AWD. The FWD was regarded as having dodgy dynamics by all the testers, having "inconsistent steering and ESP all over the place, alternately over intervening, and at other times nowhere to be seen". The AWD was taken out along this bend and it started drifting, but the ESP …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 5, 2012 There are vehicles that with a quick glance, you immediately recognize; the Porsche 911 and the Volkswagen Beetle are perfect examples of this. Another vehicle that follows this is the Toyota Prius. Since the second-generation model, the Prius has earned a place of being instantly recognizable due to its shape. Now, Toyota is pondering whether to change it or not. “There’s an undercurrent among most people that they’re ready for a new Prius look. Maybe our architecture has been a little bit similar for the last two generations.” said Chris Hostetter, Toyota’s U.S. group vice president for strategic plann…

2007MY for New Tundra to Take Advantage of Old EPA Figures New rules that will lower window-sticker fuel economy numbers on vehicles are already affecting carmakers' behavior, but perhaps not in the way regulators intended. The new figures are intended to reflect real-world fuel economy more closely than today's fuel-economy ratings. Shoppers use the figures to compare vehicles' operating costs. Listed fuel economy rates are expected to fall 7% to 15% under the new standard. To take advantage of higher miles per gallon results under the old testing procedures, Toyota Motor Corp.'s big new Tundra full-size pickup will be called a 2007 model when it debuts, despite the…

It is amazing to read articals like this and observe the obvious media bias in favor of toyota. They make excuses for toyota and then say that these screw ups, which have led to the death of some people, won't affect people's perception of the quality of toyota vehicles...?? Then, in the middle of the article, they have to state that Ford had the largest single recall back in 1996. It was for ignition switches. Nobody was killed or injured in the problem Ford had with those switches, so I think that it is yet another example of how the media folks love those foreign cars and try to talk people in to disliking American vehicles. The current generation Toyota Mirai has never been a "looker". It seemed like some sort of Prius with a glandular problem. Toyota hopes to change that and make the fuel cell vehicle sexy with the new 2021 Toyota Mirai Sedan Concept. The new concept sits on a rear-wheel drive platform and sports an new, more powerful fuel cell powertrain. Toyota claims a 30-percent increase in driving range with increased hydrogen capacity. Most importantly thought, Toyota un-weirded the Mirai so that it now looks like something that might sit in a Lexus showroom rather than Toyota. The next generation Toyota Mirai will go on sale in late 2020. View full arti…

Toyota spies guilty APRIL 24, 2007 | Link to Original Article @ GrandPrix.com The long-running case against former Ferrari engineers Mauro Iacconi and Angelo Santini, who were accused of stealing Ferrari secrets and giving them to Toyota, has concluded at the Tribunale di Modena with Santini condemned to nine months in prison for industrial espionage and Iacconi facing 16 months in jail for receiving the information from Santini and passing it on to Toyota. Both sentences were suspended but both men say they will appeal the decision. The case relates back nearly five years to the start of the 2003 season, when there were suggestions that Toyota was running a copy of t…

Court rules employee worked to death Fri Nov 30, 12:18 PM ET TOKYO (Reuters) - A Toyota Motor Corp employee died of overwork after logging more than 106 hours of overtime in a month, a judge ruled Friday, reversing a ministry's earlier decision not to pay compensation to his widow. The Toyota Labor Standards Inspection office, a local branch of Japan's labor ministry, refused to pay the widow the usual compensation for a spouse's work-related death, saying the man had only logged 45 hours of overtime in the month before he died, Japanese media reported. But the court ruled that the employee had worked far more than that, said Yomiuri Online, a Japanese news website. …

Toyota cuts North American production further December 5, 2008 8:31 PM ET Link to Article DETROIT (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp on Friday said it was cutting North American production of its best-selling cars including the Camry and Corolla sedans in response to rising inventories and a slump in sales. Toyota will idle assembly plants for additional days in December and January in Georgetown, Kentucky; Princeton, Indiana; and Fremont, California, spokesman Mike Goss said. Toyota, like its smaller rivals, has been caught out by the collapse in demand for cars and trucks in the United States, a downturn that accelerated in October and November amid tightening credi…

New ES350 Leaves Lienert Cold It would seem those robots in the new ES350 commercials were more enthused with it than one of the Lienerts was. (It isn't clear which Lienert wrote this preview because it is credited to both of them but clearly one person wrote it. Since Anita usually does the solo act, I'll assume it's her.) She called it comfortable and competent but it wasn't something she got excited over. Read "Uninspired, costly Lexus ES 350 fails to impress" @ The Detroit News

Over the course of this year, Toyota has unveiled three different crossover concepts; the FT-4X, TJ Cruiser, and the FT-AC. We figured that one of these concepts could make it into production and this was confirmed by a Toyota executive. "It's like the 90s again, we can have more than one vehicle in each segment if they are different enough," Toyota Motor North America General Manager Jack Hollis told Motor Authority. While the three concepts differ greatly in terms of design, Hollis explained this was done to "test the waters in the market and get feedback from consumers." No matter which design is chosen, there are certain details that have been confirmed. Hol…

So it comes as a bit of surprise to find out that Scion currently has 1,100 dealers across the U.S. - 200 fewer than Toyota. Considering Scion's small lineup and declining sales over the past few years, this isn't good news.
