Ever heard the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child?" Something similar could be said about the automotive industry, except the village is an assorted and wide-ranging group of auto suppliers and the child is your next new car. Currently, the major automakers only deal directly with Tier 1 suppliers, the big companies that assemble major automotive components into large modules. These modules are created using parts from Tier 2, Tier 3 or even smaller suppliers, and these companies are generally paid by their larger Tier 1 siblings. General Motors has just announced a new provision that would have the automaker making payments to smaller Tier 2 suppliers. The wo…

GM to Dealers: "No More Full Tank Freebies" [T]he General's laying down the law on dealerships in the latest missive from the bean-counting bureaucrats at the RenCen...by making it clear they'll no longer reimburse dealers for a full of tank of gas upon delivery. Instead, the Detroit-based automaker will be handing the dealership $20 for cars and $30 for trucks -- which if we've calculated correctly, will mean the dealer will be able to pump just over six gallons into a car and ten gallons into a truck without dipping into their own pockets. Editor's Note: You can also find the actual letter to dealers at the link. Read "GM Says To Dealers: No Gas For You!" @ Jalo…

Wall Street Journal GM Plants to Close Much of Summer General Motors Corp. plans to idle most its plants for about two months this summer as the company races to cut costs and production to keep pace with sinking demand, said a person familiar with the plan. The car maker typically closes its plants for a two-week summer vacation. A GM spokeswoman declined to confirm or deny the planned closure. Such a production hiatus -- one of GM's longest in recent decades -- promises to drain the company's revenue stream, dealing another blow to its attempt to restructure operations. GM's sales have tumbled in recent months, with declines topping 50%…

GM To Idle Two Truck Plants, Cut Down On Inventory William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 20, 2011 Back in early May, we reported on GM looking at cut in production of their pickup trucks. The reason why was due to increasing size of their unsold inventory, which stood at 275,000 at that time. A month later, the pickup inventory has increased by 13,000 to a total of 288,000. To help combat the large inventory, GM idle two of their truck plants for two weeks beginning on July 4th. The two plants are Flint Assembly in Flint, MI and Fort Wayne Assembly in Roanoke, IN. “GM is rightly being quite careful about building products into the sum…

[source: Left Lane News] GM to Issue Additional Shares to Pay Off Debt A filing with United States securities regulators has revealed that General Motors will issue up to 60 billion additional shares in an attempt to pay of government, bondholder and union debts. The plans would essentially wipe out the holdings of its remaining shareholders - and since the United States government will become the majority shareholder, only the Treasury's approval would be necessary. But now there's so few WWI generation folks around to buy them. Couldn't GM see the sales plummeting? They've had several years to do something about it, because the Deville sales have been falling off for a long time. What are they going to do with the 767 laid off? Put them on the jobs bank? Pay $200,000 to buy them out of their contracts? It's like 1 step forward, 1 step back for GM. The sad thing is, it really wouldn't have taken that much to keep the Deville/Lucerne in the g…

General Motors is considering building a micro-premium car, a new report finds. The model — which is being considered in the wake of new CAFE regulations and $100 a barrel oil — would compete against the MINI Cooper, BMW 1-series and Audi A3. However, GM is still deciding which architecture to use in the new car. The Detroit automaker recently announced that it will build a production a version of the Beat concept in the coming years, but its fuel-efficient front-drive setup wouldn't translate well into a driver-focused premium package. The Kappa platform remains a possibility — the same that underpins the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice — as does a new small rear-wheel…

In another sign that the auto industry is pulling away from lease deals, General Motors Corp. is cutting back incentives on new GMC, Buick and Pontiac vehicles. Dealers learned Monday that the only lease deal they'll have to offer for those brands through GM's partially owned financial arm GMAC will be on the Pontiac G6, said Russ Shelton, owner of Shelton Pontiac Buick GMC in Rochester Hills. The narrowed leasing incentives start Wednesday. It is unclear what kind of leasing deals GM will support for other brands, including Chevrolet, Saturn and Hummer. GM spokesman John McDonald said he couldn't comment on specific deals. GM expects to announce today details of …

GM To Union: Trust Us Andrew Farrell | 09.13.07, 12:29 PM ET | Link to Original Article @ Forbes With a key deadline looming on labor negotiations, investors were optimistic that General Motors would soon be able to create a new health care trust for its workers and save billions of dollars. Shares of General Motors rose $1.93, or 6.4%, to $32.18, after Citi analyst Itay Michaeli said they would be worth much more if GM could hammer out a favorable labor deal. Michaeli initiated coverage of General Motors with a "buy" rating on Thursday. GM, Ford Motor, and Chrysler are in round-the-clock negotiations with the United Auto Workers Union, which represents about 180,000…

GM to Use Cost Savings to Fight Toyota `Green' Cars, People Say By Jeff Green Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp., losing sales to Toyota Motor Corp., will use some of the $9 billion in savings from cost cuts this year to make vehicles that match the Japanese automaker in technology and fuel efficiency, according to people familiar with the strategy. GM's plans include a hybrid-electric vehicle with a battery that recharges at any outlet, improved gasoline engines, hybrid versions of its Silverado pickup trucks and hydrogen-powered fuel-cell models that emit only water vapor, according to the people, who didn't want to be identified because the plan isn't pub…

GM to widely incorporate Bluetooth by 2009 Link to Autoblog In a reader Q&A session at the GM FYI Blog, Phil Colley of GM Performance Parts responded to a question about GM's dearth of in-car Bluetooth offerings, saying that the General will soon undertake the "broadest rollout of Bluetooth in the industry," with the technology appearing in 30 vehicles across the GM range by MY '09. So, if you want Bluetooth in your new Chevy, you still have to wait a little longer, but at least you know the General's going to get with the program soon enough.

Link to original article @ DetNews.com Brett Clanton / The Detroit News General Motors Corp. will launch discount programs today for six of its eight vehicle brands to pump up sales on the back end of the busy summer selling season. The program will feature new cash incentives on select 2007 models and a menu of zero-percent financing options on remaining 2006 models that may turn out to be well-timed. DETROIT -- As General Motors moves to value pricing, it is training its dealers to boost sales of add-on accessories. Retail sales of accessories are an estimated $30 billion a year business in the United States. The business grew by two-thirds between 1998 and 2004. GM dealers sold about $1 billion in accessories last year, says Nancy Philippart, executive director of General Motors Accessories. "Customers have more flexibility and choice at the point of sale," Philippart says. "They get what they want, and that increases our odds of making the (vehicle) sale." With value pricing, GM wants to curb incentives and move transaction pri…

(AP) -- Several popular models of General Motors trucks and SUVs are liable to lose their power steering as drivers make slow turns in parking lots, according to testimony and company documents. The problem has forced the nation's biggest automaker to settle lawsuits and led one state police force to briefly label the condition a hazard, but GM considers it a "normal characteristic" of the vehicles. Some drivers complain they must struggle to parallel park and navigate into tight spots. Othe…

WARREN, Mich. - Even now, as General Motors fights for survival, there is something ambivalent about its prescription for saving itself, a conflict implicit in a bit of symbolism that recently greeted arrivals to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport even before they reached baggage claim. One of GM's touted new automobiles sat on display in the center of the automaker's airport gift shop. It was not the coming electric car, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, championed by Bob Lutz, the GM executive most identified with the Hail Mary that the vehicle represents for the bankrupt company, which faces the immediate future as a ward of the federal government. It was not one of the relati…

GM US June sales running about same as past months WASHINGTON, June 12 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp's U.S. sales have been trending about the same as the weak results of previous months, the automaker's president of North America said on Thursday. "We'll make the sales report at the end of the month, but it looks a lot like it did in the previous couple of months," GM North America President Troy Clarke told reporters at an electric car conference in Washington. Through May, GM sales were down 17 percent in 2008. GM posted a 30 percent adjusted drop in sales for May, which pulled its U.S. market share for the month below 20 percent for the first time. I've heard this for awhile now, or rumblings at least but this is what GM and the UAW will be doing to replace the massive number of people that are leaving GM due to the early retirement buyouts. Evok and I have speculated in the past that some type of agreement would be conjured up between the Union and General Motors to replace those workers. This is the deal. GM has already began hiring temporary workers at three locations in Metro-Detroit. These temporary workers are being told they will be kept with the company for at least one year. However they will not have health benefits, and will not be considered part of the Union. Once the year passes, if General Moto…

Someone I work with forwarded this link to me. MSN is asking peoples opinions about which manufacturer makes the better vehicle. Surprisingly GM is dominating the survey with 83%. Although the article looks like its more propaganda trying to put Toyota in a positive light boasting how it can do no wrong. I especially like this bit, "Completing the circle, GM's trying to go green while Toyota's making macho." Who in their right mind would consider Toyota macho? Sorry I don't think their ugly ass truck makes them macho, but thats just my opinion I guess. GM Wants 10% of Asian Market by '10 General Motors Corp., its market share shrinking at home, is turning to Asia to boost its profits, and aims to capture 10% of the region's market by 2010, the U.S. automaker's regional chief said 10%. Top target markets are China and India, where rapid economic growth is fueling demand for cars, said Nick Reilly, president of GM Asia Pacific. GM aims to sell 1.3 million vehicles in Asia this year to grab a 6.5% market share, two-thirds of which is expected to come from China, he said. Last year, GM's sales hit just over 1 million units in Asia for the first time, giving it a market share of 5.7%. Detroit Free Press

Jamie LaReau Automotive News December 24, 2007 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT — Look for General Motors to develop more products for North America in Brazil. This year GM spent $500 million on its Brazilian unit to develop small cars and to expand its product development center there. GM also designated Brazil as its lead center for designing mid-sized trucks. The cars and mid-sized trucks are intended for emerging markets, but that could change soon. DETROIT - General Motors Corp. presented suppliers Thursday with a new plan the automaker hopes will improve its relationship with them while cutting its purchasing costs. Under the plan, which will be in effect from the last quarter of this year through 2007, GM will set cost-cutting targets for individual parts rather than setting overall corporate cost-cutting targets for 250 to 300 of its top suppliers. GM spokesman Tom Wickham said suppliers have criticized GM for setting overall cost-cutting targets for supply companies even if they were meeting GM's targets for some of their individual parts. Under the new program, a supplier that makes three or four sepa…

One of the big remaining technical questions for General Motors' Chevrolet Volt has been who the automaker will tap to supply the batteries. LG Chem and A123 Systems are the two companies that have been supplying prototype battery packs for Volt development program. It has long been rumored that South Korea's LG Chem would be selected, and today CEO Rick Wagoner confirmed the selection. Surprisingly though, GM has decided it will take responsibility for actually building the complete packs. GM will also take full responsibility for all the battery management systems and power electronics. The company will build a new factory in Michigan, but a specific site has yet to b…

Jamie LaReau Automotive News January 13, 2008 - 5:43 pm ET DETROIT -- General Motors will announce the details of phase two of its attrition plans soon. The plan would eliminate more hourly jobs this year, said CEO Rick Wagoner. GM is working with the UAW on the second part of an attrition program announced late last year after reaching a contract agreement with the union. Wagoner would not say how many jobs will be eliminated in this round because GM is still working on the program. The plan will target workers close to retirement age. They would be given a buyout package offer, and those who take it likely would be replaced eventually by lower-paid, younger…

Per Bloomberg.com. GM General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker, will offer longer warranties on its vehicles in a bid to boost confidence in GM products, two people familiar with the plan said. The extended warranties mark the next phase of an eight- month-old initiative to rely less on cash incentives to generate sales, said the people, who asked not to be named because details won't be announced until later today. GM spokeswoman Mary Henige had no comment. If true I think this will work as if you want to make people feel you really have quality prove it by backing it up. It worked for Hyundai when they offered a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty after…
