http://www.ktrv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5100193 I saw something on this while watching Faux News (Cavuto) a few nights ago. They said that according to the US government, the Mustang and Suburban, two distinctly American-looking vehicles (original pony car and full-size SUV), are actually not American (65% and 68%, respectively; 75% and up qualifies as "American"), while the Toyota Camry, something traditionally viewed as an import, is (80%). Of course, they had to mention that the Prius, "something very popular in California", has zero American content.

GM price cuts may not be a better deal Strategy of consistent low prices leaves some vehicles costing more, Consumer Reports says. David Phillips / The Detroit News General Motors Corp.'s move last month to significantly slash prices on the bulk of its vehicle lineup is helping generate higher sales and more showroom traffic, but a new report says more than a third of the models affected may not offer buyers a better deal. When GM cut prices as much as $2,500 on select 2006 models in January, or about 80 percent of its U.S. lineup, Consumer Reports studied prices on more than 500 of the automaker's cars and trucks before and after the move. The magazine found that 64…

By TOM KRISHER (AP) – 1 hour ago DETROIT — Behind GM's hesitation to sell its unprofitable car business in Europe lies a Cold War fear: American technology will fall into Russian hands. It's among the main reasons why General Motors Co. has balked at finishing a deal to sell its Opel unit to a group led by Canadian auto parts maker Magna International Inc. and Russia's state-owned Sberbank. GM announced the tentative deal with Magna in May at a time when it was desperately trying to avoid bankruptcy protection. But now, after exiting Chapter 11 in better financial shape and encouraged by signs of better sales, the Detroit-based automaker is second-guessing the dea…

The UAW has announced that their membership has ratified the new 4-year contract deal with General Motors 23,389 to 17,501. Roughly 46,000 union members will receive an $11,000 ratification bonus while temporary workers will get $4,500. According to GM, work is to resume Monday with the first shift, however GM was attempting to get volunteers to start production earlier on Saturday and Sunday at Flint Assembly and Fort Wayne Assembly where the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado are built. Here is a link to the wonderul, well researched article in the Toronto Star today: www.thestar.com/Business/article/533168 Not sure if that is how you do it, but that is the article in this rag today. This rag never ceases to amaze me with their hatred of the U.S., and Detroit. Isuzu may also take a majority stake in a new truck unit in South Africa, to be spun off from a GM subsidiary, the Ni…

Imagine a future where the powertrain from the Chevrolet Volt is found under the hood of another automaker's vehicle. This might actually become reality if General Motors global powertrain chief Dan Nicholson gets his wish answered. Speaking to Automotive News, Nicholson said he was open to sharing the Volt's powertrain. "We want to be the partner of choice in propulsion system development in this complex and turbulent era we are approaching," said Nicholson. If this idea is given the green light, it would pay dividends for GM and the other automaker. For GM, giving the Volt powertrain to another automaker would drive costs down due to larger economies of scale. T…

Market valuations for GM, Ford skid as fears accelerate Fri, July 11, 2008 Shares of General Motors Corp. slid to another record low yesterday, as speculation swirled about the financial viability of U.S.-based automakers and a possible bankruptcy filing at GM. GM shares fell 64 cents, or 6.2 per cent, to close at $9.69, after tumbling to $9.32 earlier, passing Monday's five-decade low by 60 cents. Yesterday's low marked the Detroit-based automaker's lowest share price since July 2, 1954, when its stock dropped to $9.15, according to the Center for Research in Security Prices in Chicago. The price is adjusted for splits and other changes. Carl-Peter Forster,…

From SmartMoney It looks like there may be some serious conditions attached to any TARP money that could be forthcoming. After reviewing the books over the weekend, this was leaked to the media. I personally believe that this may be the only way for GM to get itself back on track. While they may lose major market share, they can become profitable. GM could see their market share at 10% after a restructuring, but it's better to be smaller and profitable than to have 20% share right before you go out of business forever. I'd rather have a smaller, focused, profitable GM than no GM at all..

[New York Times] Chrysler's Fall May Help Administration Reshape G.M. WASHINGTON — Fresh from pushing Chrysler into bankruptcy, President Obama and his economic team are hoping that the hard line they took last week gives them leverage to force huge changes in General Motors, a far larger and more complex company. Officials say that, difficult as Mr. Obama's decision was on Wednesday to take all the risks of a Chrysler bankruptcy, the politics of reshaping G.M. will be far harder. Already a shadow of the company that once dominated the American landscape, G.M. will be forced to eliminate tens of thousands of additional jobs and close fa…

Someone I work with forwarded this link to me. MSN is asking peoples opinions about which manufacturer makes the better vehicle. Surprisingly GM is dominating the survey with 83%. Sorry I don't think their ugly ass truck makes them macho, but thats just my opinion I guess. DETROIT — The United Auto Workers union Thursday said it was not close to a cost-cutting agreement with bankrupt auto parts maker Delphi Corp. and automaker General Motors Corp. (GM), dashing hopes of workers and investors that a deal was in the offing. "Nothing could be further from the truth," the UAW said in a statement on its Web site. "The parties are not close to working out such an agreement. "There are many, many, significant issues to be resolved," the UAW said. "Overall the situation has changed very little since our last meeting." Despite the denial from UAW, GM shares were up sharply. In early trading on the New York Stock Exchange, they soared 5.88 perce…

Last week, General Motors issued a stop sale on the 2016 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia due to the window stickers having overstated fuel economy numbers by one to two mpg. All-wheel drive models had an incorrect label showing ratings of 17 City/24 Highway/19 Combined. The correct label has ratings of 15 City/22 Highway/17 Combined. But what about the folks who bought one of GM's large crossovers with the incorrect ratings? How did this happen in the first place? We have answers. In a statement to Automotive News, GM explained the 2016 models were equipped with new “emissions-related hardware,” which meant new tests needed to be done. “The f…

GM needs only 2 big SUV plants Automaker plans to shift production to full-sized pickups By Jason Stein Automotive News / September 26, 2005 DETROIT - In the face of high gasoline prices, General Motors is counting on improved truck sales to offset modest expectations for its large SUVs. GM plans to build the next generation of its full-sized SUVs in two assembly plants, rather than the current three. But the automaker expects total full-sized truck capacity to stay about the same. GM will allocate more capacity to its full-sized pickups, chiefly the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. GM built about 1.7 million full-sized trucks and SUVs in North Amer…

Well today, I was inquiring about an 07 Z06 for a friend of mine... because 06's were sold out he wasnt able to get one... 07's are sold out as well but... i asked about how much profit the 06's had, and if the 07's were the same... while, not sure about the exact price, it was a good comission... but apparently the price on the 07 is going up, but likewise, the invoice is going up more then the msrp... and this sparked an interesting discussion... while "total value promise" sounds good to the customer, sounds good to GM, it sounds horrible to the salesperson... Every model had a reduction in base MSRP for the year 2006... and now i've started looking over our sale…

When cars were America's idols STATUS: A Cadillac, this one a 1958 Eldorado, topped GM’s “Ladder of Success,” a shrewd marketing strategy that welded a link between who we are and what we drive. --- Dan Neil June 1, 2009 If you were to walk up to a typical New York executive in the 1960s -- think Don Draper in AMC's "Mad Men" -- and tell him that General Motors Corp. would be in bankruptcy by 2009, he would have thought you were delusional, or perhaps a Communist. GM was more than just the world's largest and most admired corporation; it was the final vindication of the American Way, the perfected and even divinely inspired example of democratic capitalism th…

DETROIT, Jan. 6 - General Motors expects to reduce the billion-dollar losses at its struggling North American operations this quarter, as its cost-cutting efforts take effect, G.M.'s chief executive, Rick Wagoner, said today. Speaking in a rare interview with a small group of journalists at G.M.'s headquarters here, Mr. Wagoner declined to say when the automaker's North American operations would return to profitability. But he did emphasize that G.M. had no plans to file for bankruptcy protection. And Mr. Wagoner said he anticipated that stronger sales of new vehicles, including a restyled group of sport utility vehicles, combined with the company's restructuring should…

In this day and age of big goverment here is the latest we are facing in Ohio. Senate bill 204 is proposing that would let GM dealers sell other makes and modelin in their show rooms. It also would prevent independent repair shops and private owners from buying GM parts to repair thier own cars. Read on to the story below. General Motors is launching an ad campaign in Ohio to argue that pending legislation there could hurt GM's turnaround. General Motors says the bill, SB 204, which the Ohio Senate is considering next week, would allow auto dealers to sell foreign-made vehicles on the same dealer lots with GM cars and trucks; would prohibit GM from selling its auto…

Speaking to the Society of Automotive Engineers earlier this week, GM engineering chief Jim Queen said the automaker is planning to build its Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric car in the future. "We will get this into production," Queen said. "We are very, very serious about this." However, Queen admitted that GM is still trying to figure out how to make the Volt provide "profit for the enterprise." GM execs are making a considerable effort to reassure the public that the Volt is not being shelved. In a pos…

Washington -- The Obama auto task force is preparing to loan General Motors Corp. about $5 billion in additional federal short-term aid, and Chrysler LLC $500 million, an Obama administration official familiar with the matter said Thursday. The disclosure assigns a dollar amount to the pledge of continued short-term support issued late last month by the administration, after it rejected GM's and Chrysler's restructuring plans and requests for up to $21.6 billion in additional assistance. The official said the decision was expected to be announced next week -- though the precise amounts were still the subject of talks between the government and the automakers. The Whit…

Now showing: "The Detroit Meltdown," featuring Rick Wagoner in his latest leading role. He turned it down in July, when Steve Miller stepped in the CEO's office at Delphi Corp. and proclaimed that his problems were smaller but more immediate, GM's were larger and he needed GM's help to avert bankruptcy. He spurned the role in early October because Wagoner first needed to wrest health care concessions from the United Auto Workers. Besides, he'd long since decided the only thing that would keep Miller, a restructuring-through-bankruptcy virtuoso, out of Chapter 11 would be a big pile of GM cash. He said no a third time in November, infuria…

But on the fifth anniversary of the crisis, Forbes presents an exclusive, unprecedented look at what really happened during GM’s darkest days, how a tiny band of corporate outsiders and turnaround experts convened in Detroit and hatched a radical plan that ultimately set the foundation for the salvation of the company. Author Jay Alix, one of the most respected experts on corporate bankruptcy in America, was the architect of that plan, and now, f…

But since the alliance was announced last year, it has been fraught with disappointment. Now it appears the alliance is scaling back a bit. Part of this slim down is due to the planned joint platform for subcompact cars was nixed. This platform was the heart of the alliance. "Further analysis showed that th…

I wonder if this has to do with inventory from 2005? because August we still had lots of inventory... durring GMS last year we blew out 1500 brand new chevys in just 4 months... the inventory crunch neve…

It seems with every new report concerning General Motors and the ignition switch recall, GM only looks worse off. Consider this piece from the Wall Street Journal today which reports that the automaker placed an order for 500,000 replacement ignition switches two months before announcing a recall. Emails shown to the Wall Street Journal revealed that on December 18, a GM contract worker contacted supplier Delphi Automotive for a 'urgent' order of 500,000 switches. This comes a day after GM senior executives were called into a meeting to discuss the situation over the Chevrolet Cobalt was discussed. However, no records were kept about what was said at the meeting. These …

Chosun News Story - Korea As GM Daewoo Soars, Kia Crumbles After Korea suffered the financial crisis of the late 1990s, Kia Motors and Daewoo Motor, two of the top three automakers in the country at the time, changed hands. Kia was bought out by Hyundai, becoming Hyundai Kia Automotive Group in 1998 and Daewoo, which went bankrupt in 2000, was sold to GM of the United States two years later. Nine years have passed since Kia was sold, and seven since Daewoo went belly up. In that time these companies have traveled in opposite directions. Thanks to stable labor relations, Daewoo has grown rapidly as a production base for small and compact GM-branded cars. In contrast, …

I can't believe this, and it's no wonder the workers that got paycuts and buyout are furious. Last week, GM's CEO Dan Akerson said in a interview with the Associated Press that the company would be willing to buy back Volts from concerned owners. Well some owners are taking GM up on that offer. Today, GM told The Detroit News that a "couple dozen" Volt owners have asked the company to buy back their Volts. "For those few who have requested repurchase, we're going to move fast" if their concerns can't be met any other way, said Greg Martin, GM spokesman. GM is currently working with Volt owners individually to understand their concerns and offering loaner vehicles to those owners during the NHTSA investigation. Source: The Detroit News Related: GM M…

Size is key. General Motors expects 2005 Middle East sales of its nine-seat GMC and Chevrolet Suburbans and its lumbering GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe to soar to 51% over last year, pushed by frantic sales in the biggest regional market - Saudi Arabia. General Motors, Ford and Nissan all reported big October sales declines in America last week, with four-wheel-drives taking the biggest hit. Sales of the Ford Explorer, Lincoln Navigator, GMC Yukon, Hummer H2 and Toyota Land Cruiser were all down by 50% or more. High oil prices were cited as a chief reason. But in one of the auto industry's great ironies, the same oil price rise is driving four-wheel-drive fever in…

General Motors has been in the spotlight lately with financial problems, and now one big mistake cost the company a lot of money. GM owed Jack Paulis, owner of Paulis J.R. Industries, $1,900, but through an apparent accounting error, transferred nearly $4 million into Paulis’ account, Local 4 reported. The error occurred when GM ordered one part for $1,988, but somehow the statement was noted as ordering 1,988 parts, and transferred the appropriate funds to cover what was believed to have been the accurate amount. Paulis said he was having a hard time returning the money, and when he made attempts to call it seemed as though they didn’t care and they showed no sense of…

[source: Autoblog] Vauxhall sans Opel could realign with GM Daewoo, Holden Eyebrows raised at reports that General Motors could hold on to its British subsidiary Vauxhall even if – or, more likely, when – its German counterpart Opel would leave the family. With the model ranges of the two European GM divisions intertwined, a Vauxhall without Opel would seem like an empty shell. New reports suggest, however, that instead of re-plastering Opels with the griffin badge, the British marque could instead continue operations under GM ownership by importing products made by GM Daewoo Auto & Technology. The restructuring of Vauxhall would also lik…

Was on auto row today and noticed that the Pontiac sign on my local dealer's building here north of LA has been covered up. The GM pylon sign out front still has "Pontiac" but will likely be replaced by "Cadillac" as the dealer has replaced his Cadillac-only store with Volkswagen(!) and has moved Cadillac in with Buick/GMC. Interestingly, the HUMMER sign at the same Buick/GMC dealership has not been covered up/removed yet despite the lack of new inventory. The Saturn dealer down the street still has his sign up but no new inventory. What's going on in your town?

IL Exclusive: OnStar To Help Customers Find Ethanol Date posted: 04-08-2006 DETROIT — OnStar President Chet Huber said his company will unveil a new service in June to let customers know if their vehicle is E85 compatible and help them find ethanol filling stations. Customers will receive an e-mail telling them where ethanol filling stations are in their area — or they can press the OnStar button in their vehicle and get help from a representative. Huber said OnStar is also working on another new service that would alert customers when their tires are underinflated. "Even minor underinflation has an impact on fuel economy," Huber said. He would not say when that serv…

GM Announces Bi-Fuel Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 HDs Posted by Mark Williams | March 4, 2012 GM announced today a bi-fuel version of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 HDs that can run either on regular gas or compressed natural gas. The extended cab is powered by a 6.0-liter V-8 that makes the same horsepower and torque as you'd find in the base model with "a minimal loss" with CNG, said Mike Jones, GM's CNG product manager. The pickup will be available in long- and short-bed versions and two- and four-wheel drive. The engine initially runs on gas, then automatically switches over to CNG once an optimum temperature is reached. When the CNG r…

The 2019 model year looks to be the year of the full-size truck. Alongside a redesigned Ram 1500, General Motors will be launching their next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. The new trucks will be bringing a number of improvements such as a lower curb weight thanks to new materials, updated powertrains, and some new tech. But the current-generation pickups will be sticking around for some time. The Truth About Cars came across GM's 2019 VIN code documents that were submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In them, GM lists the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Legacy and GMC Sierra Limited. These models will only be offered as a …

This deal has been talked about for two years, and it looks like it may finally see fruition. Demand for Chevrolets and Opels in Eastern Europe is growing by leaps and bounds, with GM shortly to open a third plant in Russia to build the Chevy Captiva. Chevrolet sales grew by 33% in Europe, to more than 100,000, in the first quarter of 2007. It is the best-selling brand in Macedonia. Opel is Croatia's best-selling brand, Croatia bordering with Serbia and both of these being former republics of Yugoslavia. With Zastava having invested more than 15 million euros recently in new presses and machinery to build its new Zastava 10 (effectively Fiat's Punto), the company has beg…

Here we are, not yet through the first month of the new year, and Ed Peper, vice president at Chevrolet, is already predicting that the Bowtie brand will increase market share in 2009. What evidence does he submit to arrive at this early conclusion? Last year, Chevy managed to post an increase of six-tenths of a point in retail share in 2008, despite the horrible market conditions late in the year, with the Malibu leading the charge by increasing sales by nearly 40% over the previous generation. The latest Malibu is certainly a good place to start, and Peper believes that the updated Equinox crossover will make similar inroads in the market. Peper also points to wins by…

Tuesday, 07/11/06 GM seeks 750 temps to replace 1,300 Spring Hill early retirees 150 down, 600 to go as automaker scurries to train new workers By BUSH BERNARD Staff Writer General Motors Corp. will hire as many as 750 temporary workers this year for its Spring Hill plant, to fill spots left vacant by workers taking early retirement and buyouts. The company has 150 on board now and plans to add 600 more as it loses more than 1,300 longtime employees as part of a work-force reduction. GM is shutting down a half-dozen assembly lines — including one of the two lines in Spring Hill — to bring production in line with shrinking sales. The company won't need the 5,000 pe…

David Barkholz Automotive News April 22, 2008 - 4:28 pm ET General Motors has won a two-day reprieve from a possible UAW local strike of its key Chevrolet Malibu assembly plant in Kansas City, Kan. Officials at UAW Local 31 agreed to allow negotiations to extend into Thursday, April 24, before a decision is made whether to walk out, said Local 31 President Jeff Manning. He said talks are progressing slowly. The 2,600 workers at GM's Fairfax assembly plant would not approve what GM is offering on some key issues, including seniority rights and job security. The Fairfax plant makes about 3,100 of the hot-selling Malibu sedans a week. GM has only a 37-day supp…

GM Sells Majority Stake in GMAC General Motors Corp. sold a majority of its General Motors Acceptance Corp. finance unit to a group led by Cerberus Capital Management LP on Thursday, raising $7.4 billion in cash and completing a transaction that began in April. GMAC will be able to borrow at a lower cost by separating from its parent, cutting GM's cost to sell cars to customers. The sale of a 51 percent stake meets a goal of CEO Rick Wagoner as he works to recover from last year's $10.6 billion loss. GM will take a $2.7 billion distribution from GMAC as part of the transaction, meaning it will get a total of $10.1 billion for the stake this year. GM will get another …

So in the end, the UAW puts the final nail in the coffin. It would be a fitting final chapter for GM who apparently will never be able to rid itself of the albatross. I suppose a dying animal will do anything to survive, including kill another. It is, however, the one consolation from this whole morass, which is the final demise of the UAW which will finally be gone no matter what the outcome of this attempt at legislation. Good riddance. *** Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said the sticking point was the United Auto Workers' refusal to set a "date certain" to put employees at U.S. auto manufacturers at "parity pay" with U.S. employees at foreign automakers in …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 22, 2013 Last week, General Motors announced they would be raising the prices on the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra by as much as $1,500. This week, dealers are giving the company a piece of their mind with this decision. They say sales of the two trucks are getting beaten up by discounts and rebates being offered by Ford and Ram to clear out their stock of 2013 models. "We all know that it's a great truck. But [GM's] position is that the vehicle stands on its own and it doesn't need a bigger rebate. That's not what the market is telling us," said W. Carroll Smith, president of Monument Chevrolet in Pasa…

The Orion plant currently builds the Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Bolt EV, and the Cruise AV test vehicles. There are about 880 hourly and 130 salary employees working there. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 28, 2013 Before the Chevrolet Volt was launched, General Motor executives were making some very bold claims on production numbers, throwing numbers like 60,000 or 45,000 Volts a year. Since going into production, GM has sold 7,671 Volts in 2011 and 23,461 in 2012. Combine the Opel and Vauxhall Ampera and then you're looking around 30,000 plug-in vehicles. Now for 2013, General Motors looks to be boosting their production number, albeit more realistic. Bloomberg reports that General Motors is planning to boost production of their plug-in vehicles to 36,000, a 20% increase. This information comes from two sourc…
