William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 4, 2012 With Saab officially bankrupt and its assets sold off, owners of Saab vehicles are now wondering where they should go for their next vehicle. Polk recently released a new study which looked at what former Saab owners now own. The study uses the Polk Disposal Loyalty Methodology, which looks what owners are selling whenever a new car is bought. The study found that Saab owners are moving to a wide variety of manufacturers. Honda is at the top, getting 7.2%. Volkswagen isn't far behind, taking 7%. Audi and Toyota tie for third, both getting 6.3%. Chevrolet rounds out the top five. Source: Polk William …

The next generation of this biomass fuel could be cheaper, more plentiful and arriving sooner than you think. NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) – Cellulosic ethanol, the biofuel that differs from corn-based ethanol in that it can be made from pretty much any organic matter, has made an impression among people who matter. Alan Greenspan, the revered former chairman of the Federal Reserve with a big distaste for irrational exuberance, recently sang its praises before a Congressional hearing on energy security. Greenspan said cellulosic ethanol is the only alternative energy source that could be produced in enough volume to make a dent in gas usage. Full Article - http://money.cnn…

Im curious over what everyone else thinks about this. How soon do you expect Self Driving cars to be popular, how much longer until they are mainstream? I personally don't see them being popular for another 20 years, and not mainstream for…

Consumer Reports Release Their Annual Car Reliability Survey: Ford Down, Chrysler Up William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 27, 2011 Consumer Reports released their annual Car Reliability Survey and the results were not kind to Ford. The blue oval saw their ranking drop from 10th to 20th on the survey due to three models; the new Explorer, Focus and Fiesta. Each of the three vehicles were ranked below average in reliability during their first year on the market due to issues with MyFord Touch and the dual-clutch transmissions in the Fiesta and Focus. "I don’t think I could have ever imagined a truck so capable, upscale, and yet so efficient ever existing. Benefiting from more than 25 years of truck evolution, it’s remarkable just how capable a mid-size pickup truck like the Canyon has become. While a lot of that credit can rightfully be placed with features such as the truck’s fully boxed frame, the new Duramax 2.8-liter turbodiesel I-4 deserves a nod as well." THIS is how you win awards and gain marketshare. More at the link: http://www.motortrend.com/news/2016-gmc-canyon-duramax-diesel-4x4-first-test-review/

I know we've talked a lot about media bias on this site and it's always so much fun that I offer the latest example: http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/16/parents...ehicles-for-07/ A couple of questions: 1. How in all decency did the CR-V and Santa Fe end up in the SUV category when the RAV4 is a crossover? 2. The Entourage gets on the list, but neither of Chrysler's vans are there? Seriously? 3. Since when is the Mazda3 a family car? I'm sure there is plenty more wrong with this list, but I'll let you guys have some fun picking it apart. For those of you not inclined to click the link, the list looks like this: Crossovers: Toyota RAV4 Dodge Caliber Ford Edge SU…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 22, 2012 Earlier this month, we reported that four states; Illinois, Massachusetts, New York and Oregon were complaining about Tesla and their stores. "Tesla's factory-owned stores present unfair competition for rival dealerships, are inconvenient for consumers needing repairs and, if left unchallenged, ultimately threaten the franchise system," said a report in Automotive News. Tesla didn't see a problem with their stores. "We do what we're capable of doing, and we do whatever they let us do. It's unique for each location. If we can't be a dealer in a mall, we won't do reservations on-site. We tell people wher…

There looks to be another automaker who wants to enter the North American market. Korean brand Ssangyong is planning a Wrangler-style high-design SUV sometime in the later half of this decade. The SUV would be based on the automaker's recently launched Tivoli crossover and have styling that is in line with the Korando, a model that started off as a licensed CJ-7 clone. Power will come from Tivoli as well, which includes 1.6L gas and diesel engines. So why try entering the North American market now? “The company has never cracked North America because it requires a huge investment and because the distributor model that we use in other territories wouldn’t reall…

This story is posted by MSN in their auto forum from a U.S. News and World Report story on "Why Are Manual Transmission Disappearing?" Thought it was an interesting piece. I agree with some of what is said but also feel there is a lack of effort on why some might still want a manual or how they can keep the value by being an informed sales person. I will agree that the best anti-theft device is a manual transmission now. Seems the news has more and more stories about the craziness of people breaking in to steal an auto and when it is a manual they end up having to leave. http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/ownership/why-are-manual-transmissions-disappearing/ar-…

The US gasoline-industrial complex has had its day. In Asia's frontiers of globalisation the green machine is pulling away Some companies go bust because of bad management, and some get crushed by unrelenting recession. But once in a while you get a business whose death is about much more than supply chains or sales targets; it sounds the death knell for an entire era. And the funeral bells surely tolled this week when General Motors filed for bankruptcy. Start talking about GM, and the superlatives soon run out. What's now the largest industrial failure in US history was for so many years the biggest company in the world. More than that, the 100-year-old giant was…

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx wants to increase the maximum fine for automakers who fail to recall vehicles in a timely fashion from the current $35 million fine to a much more painful $300 million fine. The increase is part of a new transportation reauthorization bill whose primary focus is to fund maintenance for highways, bridges, and other infrastructures. On a conference call with reporters, Foxx said the fines on automakers need to be “more than a rounding error” to act as a deterrent. The department “wants to make sure there’s an ability to make it count and ensure that there’s enough of an effect across the industry,” Foxx said. The bill also includes …

Sales of big pickups are beginning to stall Half of full-size pickups on the market saw sales decline in 2005; nearly all stumbled out of the gate in 2006 Brett Clanton / The Detroit News In the often fickle auto business, where yesterday's hot seller can be tomorrow's discounted dud, sales of big pickups have remained rock steady in the face of gas spikes, economic downturns and changing consumer tastes. But despite a fiercely loyal customer base, full-size pickups have started to lose steam in what could be a troubling sign for Detroit's automakers. Half of full-size pickups on the market saw sales decline in 2005, and nearly all models stumbled out of the gate in …

The recently announced alliance between Ford and Volkswagen will not bring any benefits to North America at the beginning. Both companies said that the partnership will focus on Africa, Europe, and South America beginning with commercial vans and the next-generation Ranger/Amarok pickup. Down the road, both Ford and Volkswagen said there could be a potential product for the U.S. While Ford is keeping quiet on what that product could be, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess said that a commercial vehicle being jointly developed by the two could come over. "Some of those, yes, but it's not yet decided which vehicle comes to America," said Diess. Volkswagen's commerci…

FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne is known to speak his mind and tell it like it is. During the Automotive News World Congress, Marchionne questioned the U.S. Government's mandate of 54.5 MPG by 2025. "There is not a single carmaker that cannot make the 54 number. The question is, at what a price?" said Marchionne. A possible reason for the CEO of FCA to bring this up is gas prices around the nation are hovering around $2.00. Also, sales of hybrids and electric vehicles have been declining, partly due to gas prices. Now many executives say that low gas prices will pass and that they will continue in investing in newer technologies. Now Marchionne does agree automakers can mee…

Developing autonomous vehicles in sunny, dry locales like Phoenix, Arizona has proven to be difficult due to numerous variables such as traffic and human behavior. But an upcoming study from Michigan State University reveals that autonomous technologies still have a number of hurdles as testing begins in areas with changing conditions. Automotive News had the chance to speak with Hayder Radha, an MSU professor of electrical and computer engineering who oversaw the upcoming study. The findings reveal that the algorithms that are used to distill the various bits of information coming from the cameras and radar/lidar sensors have issues when it lightly rains. "When…

Ryan Daleo, a 28-year-old factory worker for Ford Motor Co., has the auto industry in his blood. His great-grandfather, great-grandmother, both grandfathers and father worked the lines of Detroit area auto plants. Don't tell his family about the virtues of a foreign car; they don't care for Toyotas or Nissans. Don't dare park one in their driveway; they'll ask you to move it. Daleo, a Canton resident who grew up in Inkster and Garden City, said he was meant to work on cars and trucks. Five years ago, he started with Ford, where his great-grandfather first worked in the 1940s. "I'm a gearhead," said Daleo, wearing blue jeans and a …

I'm watching the local news (Channel 5) and they are about to do a story on the Tacoma's frame failures. This is the first I've seen of it being reported by the mainstream media. You can see some of the older articles on Channel 5's website. http://www.thebostonchannel.com/search/for...amp;x=0&y=0 Tonight's story showed severely rotted Tacomas with holes in the frame. However it also says that the owners of one of the Tacomas are being denied the buyback because their truck "isn't bad enough yet". Other owners junked their truck because it was too rusty to be safe to drive four months before the buybacks were announced. Toyota told them they are SOL (but they'r…

Tuesday, September 26, 2006 World War II created health insurance perk Ron French / The Detroit News The fact that GM pays anything for health care is an accident of history. By the 1940s, health care costs in most industrialized nations were paid by the government. That might have happened in the United States, too, if not for World War II. To halt inflation during the war, the government put a cap on wage raises. To compensate workers, companies began offering health insurance. By the time the cap on raises was lifted, health insurance had become a common perk to attract and retain workers. In 1950, GM President Charles Wilson offered to pay 50 percent o…

One is credit alternative fuels, so would GM be better off only making 4 cylinders, diesels and flex fuel V8's? It also classifies F150s and Silverados as large work trucks exempt from the standards. What is the big problem with new cars? According to a new survey, it happens to be the infotainment systems. A study done by automotive consultants SBD and polling firm Nielsen asked some 14,000 owners about features in their cars and asked which ones were the best and the worst. The ten that scored the lowest in the survey were all related in some form to the infotainment system. These included smart phone integration, built-in apps, customizable instrument panels, and voice recognition. “It’s sort of an arms race -- who can have the most technology in the vehicle -- and consumers are confused,” said Nielsen Vice President Mike Chadsey at a connected-car symposiu…

(if this fits another section better feel free to move it there.) Nitrous oxide has now become the largest ozone-depleting substance emitted through human activities, and is expected to remain the largest throughout the 21st century, NOAA scientists say in a new study. For the first time, this study has evaluated nitrous oxide emissions from human activities in terms of their potential impact on Earth’s ozone layer. As chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which have been phased out by international agreement, ebb in the atmosphere, nitrous oxide will remain a significant ozone-destroyer, the study found. Today, nitrous oxide emissions from human activities are more than twice…

How do you feel about the current Wall Street Welfare taking place, with Fanny, Freddy, AIG, Bank of America, etc. Will it affect the 25 billion the big 3 are seeking from the Federal Government? If the big 3 go belly up, will the Federal Government come to their rescue or let the big three wither on the vine and die? Should the Federal Government let the big 3 die, if so, why not let the banks and insurance companies die too? What's the difference between the American auto industry and Wall Street? William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 9, 2013 Don't own a vehicle? You are not alone. In fact, the number of people who don't own a vehicle is increasing. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials released a brief that states the number of American households that don't own a vehicle has seen a uptick. Starting in 1960, the number of households that didn't own a vehicle declined steadily, reaching a low of 8.7 percent in 2007. But since that time, the share has been rising. In 2011, the latest year for which data is available, the share had risen to 9.3 percent. While the economic fallout from the recession plays a key r…

There seems to be little doubt that Chinese cars will hit the U.S. market some soon – the big question is when. At least one automaker is suggesting that Chinese cars will enter America by way of Mexico, with production starting in 2010 and sales in the United States by 2015 after first making the rounds in Latin America and Canada. That date may have been sooner had we not hit such a nasty global economic crisis. Perhaps the most interesting part of this scenario would be the distribution chain. Instead of using franchised dealerships, Mexican-built Chinese cars could be sold at large retail chains like CostCo and Walmart. GS Motors, the Mexican distributor for China's…

A number of companies that are working on autonomous driving systems are implementing features that require a driver to take control in hairy situations. But Waymo, the self-driving unit of Alphabet (Google's parent company) recently revealed they have stopped developing these features. The reason is simple, drivers lacked the awareness to take over driving. Waymo's CEO John Krafcik told reporters yesterday the decision to scrap this technology comes down to experiments done back in 2013 with Google employees that were filmed. The videos shown for the first time outside of Google showed people messing on their phones, putting on makeup, and even someone deciding to t…

On the surface, carbon fiber sounds like a wonder-product which can replace much of the heavy metal, especially steel, that makes up the vast majority of nearly every automobile's structure. Dig a bit deeper, however, and there are a few flies in CF's ointment that make it very difficult to use in vehicles: price, supply and the time it takes to mold a the weaved material. Japan's big three carbon fiber producers are tackling each of these issues in a number of ways. First, the price of CF is expected to become more competitive as both carbon cloth goes down and rolled sheet steel goes up. What's more, as additional CF producing plants come online in the coming years, bot…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 8, 2013 The Chicken Tax, a fifty year-old tariff put in place to tax 25 percent on all imported trucks could be gone in the near future. The U.S. is currently in talks currently in negotiations with the the Trans-Pacific Partnership over free-trade agreements. One of the countries in the Trans-Pacific Partnership is Japan, a country that currently imposes strict restrictions on U.S. imports. The U.S. is using the elimination of the Chicken Tax as bargaining chip in the negotiations to hopefully open up and let domestic automakers come in. “The automakers see it as some leverage to getting other countries to open …

Previously, the market for vans was stagnate. Old models paired with poor optimism in the business world made vans appealing as cold liver and onions. But Bloomberg reports that vans are making a comeback. Data from Edmunds shows that van sales by unit have more than double in the past five years, outpacing the pace set by the auto industry overall. More surprising is that in the first quarter, sales of vans climbed another third. If this growth trend continues, its expected that 475,000 vans will be sold in the year. So what is causing this explosion in van sales? Two factors. First are new vans arriving in showrooms. Ford. Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, and Ram have introduce…

Bill would make cars kid-safe In a bid to keep children safer, automakers could be forced to install rear-view cameras and power windows that automatically reverse under a bill to be introduced today. The Cameron Gulbransen Kids and Cars Safety Act -- which U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and John Sununu, R-N.H., will introduce at a news conference today -- is named after a 2-year-old New York boy who was accidentally run over and killed in 2002 when his father backed his SUV out of his driveway. "Nearly every other day, a child dies in the United States from a completely preventable tragedy -- backed over by a driver who could not see behind (the) vehicle, strangl…

Cracking 30 mpg in a truck with towing capacity more in line with V8s 10 years ago is pretty awesome. We'll resist the temptation to make a joke about how you'll be directed by some cheezy stick figure drawings to assemble the car yourself with nothing more than a five-page word-free manual. Whoops, sorry. The source of the news is a fairly official-looking website from France, which is odd considering that IKEA is based in Sweden. The supposed unveiling of the LEKO is scheduled for... wait for it... April 1st. At this point, we're content to assume this is an elaborate ruse and that ther…

Aside from economists, whose voices often carry little weight in Washington, there is virtually no opposition to this form of regulation. Not even from a Republican president. To bolster support for these new rules, CAFE proponents have issued two studies that purport to show that increasing the CAFE standard to 35 miles per gallon would generate fuel savings for car owners in excess of the adm…
