A '67 Olds 442 just went for $100,000. That's the only one I've seen break the 100k mark so far. A '32 Ford Pro Street with over $135,000 invested in it only went for $45,000. Ouch.

So Readers Digest has this contest where you show your "spirit" for your town (or a town) in order for the town to win money towards an improvement. The town my dad grew up in and my aunt and uncle still live is currently in second place in the "population under 99,000" category, and are trying to win $40,000 towards making the town library handicap accessible. In addition, all individuals are entered into a contest to win $35,000 towards a car and roadtrip across America. Feel free to vote for your own town/city, but if you don't care and just want to have the chance to win a car and trip, please vote here: http://wehearyouamerica.readersdigest.com/town.jsp?town=FAIRB…

Darn it, I need to apologize to those I've offended here in The Lounge lately. Here I am, moaning about all the malaise that has spilled into our little "escape pod" on the 'net, and I've been adding to it myself. I really want to get away from all the negativity that has plagued The Lounge lately. It's bad enough to hear of the latest seemingly insurmountable challenge befalling our beloved GM and the rest of the domestic auto industry in the rest of C&G, but to me, this part of the forum should be a safe haven from "The World" and all its harsh realities.

http://www.cheersandgears.com/forums/index...?showtopic=8529 First off, way to go Croc and Charger. Way. To. Go. Anyhow, I would like to apologize for starting a topic that turned into, well, an offensive thread more or less. I just thought that it was just pretty crazy that you could find a piegon to eat in China and not a single turkey in sight. (And it was Food Channel or something. It had to do with people...and sausages...and shipping them overseas...I can't honestly remember now.) Sorry if I'm just doing the following: I just don't anyone to make me out to some racist, pompus asshole. Sorry.

Fact A: the new Camry is an ugly, bloated looking whale of a car. Fact B: they are building Camrys in the Subaru plant in Lafayette, IN, the same plant where they build the Legacy/Outback (and Tribeca) I present to you evidence that ugly is contagious among cars built in the same plant. Subaru legacy, previous & current gen side by side.

...instead, like 2 cars of mine previously, being parked was what got my '87 MC LS hit. [My former "Silver Bullet" '88 MC LS was backed into on the street in front of our house; my former "Green Hornet" '00 LS was hit in the parking lot outside of the HardRock Cafe in downtown Nashville ... both with NO note left.] *sighs* I took my usual walk about 11 this morning. As I head back to the building, I pass by where my car is parked. This morning, I noticed that the license plate didn't look quite right. I walked closer ... and found a note tucked under the driver's side windshield wiper. Arg. Apparently, a gal backed into my '87 MC LS as she was leaving earlier in t…

Volkswagen uses incorrect information for their owner's manuals. Recently, the brake lights on the Golf went out. The first thing I did was look to the owner's manual to check the fuse. What do you know? The fuse it had listed for the brake lights was intact. That's odd... must be the brake light switch. After switching that out for one out of the Jetta, I knew something had to be up. I had a sheet I printed out previously for relay information and it also happened to have fuse information on it. I got it off of VW Vortex back in the day. I decide to check it to see what it says... Owner's Manual: VWV Print-out: Needless to say... the latter was correct...

I've had iTunes since version 4 and remember the days when it opened quickly and everything was a breeze. Then Apple kept releasing new versions and forcing you to upgrade in order to buy from the iTunes store, which became a pain in the ass because each time they limited the number of computers and CDs you could share/burn your purchased music on. I bought the song, so I should be able to use it on as many computers as I want. I've changed computers three times since version 4.0, so each time I have to screw around with approving a new computer to play my purchased music. Now ever since 7.0 it's become a big piece of bloatware that takes about 3 minutes to open,…

Some good reads in there. There's a write-up on the G8, and they put some miles on a new Commadore, there's a comparison test of the Silverado and Tundra (GM won!). Also is a interesting write-up from angus Mackenzie (editor) in regards to Thomas Friedmans comment in the NY times about GM building "gas guzzlers". He make several good points against Toyota and how 12 of thier 17 cars in the booth at NAIAS were new Tundra's. I like the comment were he says: "It's become fashionable to eulogize Toyota for building inviromentally friendly vehicles. But the only thing green about the Tundra is the color of the $1.3 billion or so Toyota has splurged on the factory to build …

Happy April Fools Day, folks. To kick off this thread, I don't have a really interesting sighting. Just an observation. I saw the current Lincoln Continental going down the freeway next to me, ultimately passing me as it was moving along to my left. The Continental's front grille makes that nice, vertical Lincoln statement. I once sat in one at the auto show. The interior is really nicely finished and the one at the show had these blue leather seats - nice ones, not tacky ones. Then, as the car pulls away from you, the effect sort of sputters. The rear deck lid tapers and the twin horizontal lamps are sort of wimpy compared to the statement the rest of th…

Haven't seen much memorable in the last week. Looking forward to Spring, this winter weather is hanging around too long...33 and flurries today. Last gen. Cadillac Deville Flower Car. It flew past me on Memorial Drive, too fast to even make a grab for the camera. Some pie-in-the-sky concept for a "Eye-In-The-Sky" lookout tower for Oakland, CA. This is the work of a real architect, not just some kid messing around with markers and Photoshop. So, a couple of weeks ago I am surfing the interweb, and do my normal Craigslist through Google searches for various things, like parts for the '57 Buick, a '34 Airflow, or my continued quest for a Berlinetta Camaro with V-8 and T-tops. What the hay!?! I could have sworning there use to be a section where people could ask general questions or make statements on GM a whole. Anyway do you believe GM's Dealerships harming sales buy focusing too much on their used car departments? I got to thinking about this months ago, and it popped into my mind again this morning when I turned on the TV. Every, few weeks or so the local Pontiac/GMC dealer buys a load of time on a local station to try to sell cars...but rarely do you ever see them trying to sell actual Pontiac's and/or GMC's. I work with a guy who holds the high mileage claim in our office. He has a 90 Camry 4 cyl with 242,000 miles....original. Not far behind, I have my 92 Regal 3800 coupe with 221,000 miles. We are the only 2 in the 200,000 mile club. At any rate, I rode in his car to a job site last week. What a piece of crap. I thought Camries were supposed to ride smoothly, quietly and be well put together. Not this Camry...noisy engine, unremarkable ride and the usual assortment of squeaks and rattles. In short, my Regal runs circles around this car in how quiet and smooth it is. I got out of his car thinking how glad I am to drive an American vehicle.

Has anyone seen their new video? It's a cheeeeeezy ripoff of '80s metal band Sphincter... they are riding around in a 3rd gen Camaro at the beginning, with t-tops and rear glass removed so they can all jump around in the car and act like morons. Then they get to the concert, and there are more "white trash" metalheads outside. There is a 2nd gen Firebird, a '70s or '80s Silverado, and a '70s Corvette doing donuts. Also in this video is possibly the scariest woman I have ever seen, doing a "sexy" dance on the hood of a Fiero. Sorry about your eyes BV.

Are these the most boring cars you can own? G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy www.CheersandGears.com MSN posted a story today about the most boring cars money can buy and one common point was the lack of driving excitement and what you got for the price. Interesting is that many of these autos are also considered to be rental fleet dumps. The other clear point being made is that they are not haters of hybrids, but of the CVT transmission that makes the driving a bore. Their list starts off with number one; Mitsubishi Mirage Toyota Prius Volkswagen Jetta Mitsubishi Lancer Honda Civic Hybrid Nissan Altima Chevrolet Tahoe Acura ILX Buick LaCrosse Nissan LE…

While I may hate the summertime cold coffee-based drinks or the $4 coffee drinks, I really like the coffeehouse environment - Starbucks, Peet's, Borders Cafe, B&N Cafe. I go there to write my to-do lists, write other crap, read the paper, think....for me, it's a cerebral environment that has a good atmosphere. And I get by on less than $2, ordering either hot tea or iced tea. Sometimes, the best coffee houses are of the "non-chain" variety. I'm in the process of packing for a move and am getting depressed just looking at all the things I have. With me, it's mostly PRINTED MATTER. So, with all of the talk of high gas prices, are YOU actually driving LESS? Apparently, I am (road trips, not included). Since November 2007, I've driven my cars a cumulative total of ~750 miles less than the previous twelve months (not including, of course, road trips, for which I currently rent). However, I do have about 2 more months to go since I last noted mileages for my MCs in November 2007.... BUT...if you break it down by car, only one of mine has been driven less. Since November 2007, the "count" looks like this... '87 MC LS (daily driver) ... driven 1700 miles LESS The rest ... have all been driven MORE miles than I drove them in all of 2007, with at…

Well, it seems I am seeing way more NEW American cars on the road. Great! This morning, I saw another new red Camaro parked next to a meter and, on the freeway, I was following a brand new black Mustang. (Gosh, darn, the slight design adjustment in the rear light panel with the tapered taillamps makes it very attractive). I also see lots of new Fusions still wearing their new dealer plates and quite a few new Malibus. I also see many new Focuses. What I see less of is Enclaves, which started out hot, and seem to have waned. (Personally, I don't like them, they're too bloated and bulbuous). I notice this because I live in a state that wears its love for foreign…

I've been feeling kind of apathetic lately. My job is "just there." I live for the weekend when I can sleep in and then go out and do stuff or take a day trip. Right now, my trip to 2-week trip to Europe in early July is keeping me going. Why this sentiment? -Recession seems too prolonged -Friends have lost jobs and/or getting weirder with their own problems -Lost some money in my 401 that was in WAMU (not a lot, but still) - that bank has been a "staple," is at every major intersection, and made me my townhome loan in a Seattle suburb -Chrysler bankruptcy -Pontiac elimination -GM uncertainty Does it all seem like TOO much? How are you holding up?

Read this scenario then answer the poll above. I’ve found myself doing this a lot lately and wanted to know if anyone else has this affliction. You are in traffic. A car is looking to get into traffic from a parking lot, side street, etc. in front of you. If the vehicle is a foreign car, do you pull up as close as possible to the car in front of you and huff under your breath, “I’m not letting you in Mr. Honda/Toyota/Acura/Audi/Hyundai/etc. driver!” Do you find yourself more open to letting in a GM, Ford or Chrysler product? It may be weird, but since I spend a lot more time in traffic, I tend to be more courteous to those who drive Domestic vehicles. I am not r…

I caught myself doing this more and more lately, actually being somewhat aggressive in my attempts to keep the foreign car drivers at the curb as I go past. I have even slowed down when there would have been plenty of room behind me for the guy waiting on the side to merge into traffic, but decided his Prius or Tundra could wait for the next guy to go by. Yeah, I am a child, I know. (by the way, if it is a matter of safety for the person on the side of the road, I always let them in, even I am not that uncool - even if the car they are driving is!) On the contrary, if there is a hot Domestic that might have the room to get in if I speed up, I do to allow them in. Ju…

Our beloved Bob Lutz looks to be replaced upon his retirement ("assisted", or otherwise) by Carl-Peter Forster, head of GM Europe. What does Mr. Forster know about the GMNA market? Will he attempt to turn GMNA into Opel? Will Pontiac and Buick survive? What has Saturn been able to do with all the money GM has invested in them?

...spring/summer...?! Baseball players are reporting to training camp. Spring Training is just around the bend. The Arizona Cactus and Florida Grapefruit Leagues are about to start. And ... spring is in the air. Well, maybe not yet. But...hope springs eternal.... Time to share five "truths...learned the hard way" from _The Cubs Fan's Little Book Of Wisdom_ by Jim Langford.... And, for good measure, a "winter sport" quote from the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team win in Lake Placid: So ... while the soon-to-be-here spring reminds me that I haven't completed much of what I wanted to this winter (anyone else in the same boat?) ... who el…

So, I'm EXTREMELY stressed at work, and have been for a couple of months now. I feel as though I'm being harassed by my new principal, and being untenured, the union is too chicken $h! to do anything about it. My mom is positive I can change my sexual preference. It's just a matter of following God's words. My grandmother has been in the hospital for 2 weeks now, and it's very touch and go, although it looks like she'll get better, but she's not allowed to live on her own anymore. Men on Long Island are very frustrating. I'm tired of game-playing, and I'm sick of the lack of monogamy. I love having people tell me they want a monogamous relations…

Okay... So, over the years, I've been learning more and more about cars. I know VERY LITTLE compared to many of the people on this site. I know tons of "specs" of cars, could tell you what features each car offers, can recognize a car and a year by it's taillights or headlamps shining in my rear-view mirror, but know almost nothing under the hood. No one listens to me when I say "Something doesn't feel right" regarding my car. This has been going on for YEARS. Turn back to April 2002, I said to my friends and family, "You know, I was driving today and I heard a slightly different sound when accellerating--a tinny sound. Very faint." People sat in the car, dism…

Anyone know anything about Enterprise's rental fleet? I'm flying out to Phoenix for a week on the 18th and we've reserved a full-size; anyone got a clue what Enterprise generally offers in that category in the United States? (Obviously I'm crossing my fingers against a Camry) Additionally, anyone know of any good scenic drives within a close vicinity to the Phoenix Metro area? (Saw the roads around Carefree last time and it was a pleasant experience)

Another one of those articles that seems like its straight out of The Onion. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,22183967-2,00.html Of course it did, that route sees more traffic than the Lincoln Tunnel.

Yup, he just killed another one. It was a huge one this time, and he has a hole in his nose to show for it. It must have pissed him off when it bit him, because he just wouldn't stop chomping on it long after it was dead. I think he broke every bone in its body. Sure is interesting living with a couple of wolves.

Yes, my furry idiot has blue feet. I have no idea how this happened, and I'm not sure I want to know. I had just gotten back from picking up some food with the wagon (Arkus went along for the ride), when I let him out of the car and took my dinner inside. Zora wanted to eat so I let Arkus stay outside for a few minutes. Big mistake. He went through the invisible fence and was gone. Spent an hour looking, only to get a call from the cops that a neighbor had him. So I went and picked him up ( and got another annoying lecture from another annoying do-gooder). When I let him into the house I looked down and saw that his feet looked odd. In better light, I could see…

Arkus met me at the door again this evening when I returned home from work. This time, he not only escaped his crate, he dismembered it. I have no idea how to contain him now. Clearly, no crate can hold him. Fortunately, Zora was safely locked in my bedroom so no violence this time. Unless you count the crate. Arkus broke half a dozen welds and twisted the reinforcement rods like pretzels. After making a hole big enough, he pushed the heavy pressboard "floor" I just installed out of the crate far enough to again escape through the small openings in the bottom. All of the chains and huge C-clamps are still in place, and the crate is still chained to the cast-iron…

I had to go renew mu license today, so I get there and the chick tells me to stand in front of the blue thing then like 4 seconds later tells me to go sit down, it'll be ready in a few minutes. She never gave me a warning that she was taking the pic, I look like a complete douchebag in it because I was just kinda spacing out waiting for her to ask me if I was ready. Worst part is that its not up for renewal again until 2012, so I'm going to have to "lose" it sometime in the next couple of years to get another one. Also part of my License bureau trip was legalizing the Fusion. Turns out I never paid my 2005 personal property tax (ono the Saturn, this year I pay on the…

Sighs, it never rains but it pours, right? I had my new 71 Camaro at a show a couple of weeks ago and on the way home I started to hear a knocking from the engine compartment. LOUD. I immediately got into a weigh station (lucky it was right there) and shut down. Thankfully my brother had trailered his 73 to the same show and we unloaded it and put my car on the trailer. He then let me drive his car to my place (with only 100 miles on the new engine) while he followed me. The next day Tammy (my wife), our 2 kids (7 and 11), and I pulled the engine out and tore it down. The front two piston rods were completely drive at the main bearings. In fact number 2 had no main…

I found this on a news homepage. Check out this link and hit the "slide show" Link to MSN article on American towns It lists and talks about America's "prettiest" towns (subjective). In a way, they probably tried to appease everybody and scatter them all over the U.S. The ones that don't interest me: (a) tourist towns on the California coast that you can't afford anyway (Monterey, Cambria), (b) ski resorts (Aspen), ( c ) towns which...ahem...attract people I can't relate to (Sedona, Santa Fe) The ones that interest me: (a) I stumbled into Burlington VT once (needed to get over to the US "side" from Montreal to make cell phone calls and go to Kinko's), beauti…

WASHINGTON - A huge federal study in people — not rats — takes the fizz out of arguments that the diet soda sweetener aspartame might raise the risk of cancer. No increased risk was seen even among people who gulped down many artificially sweetened drinks a day, said researchers who studied the diets of more than half a million older Americans. A consumer group praised the study, done by reputable researchers independent of any funding or ties to industry groups. "It goes a fair way toward allaying concerns about aspartame," said Michael Jacobson, head of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which had urged the government to review the sweetener's safety afte…

As I was emerging from slumber this a.m., I had a short movie flash in my head: I was driving my Cobalt here in Lancaster, PA. In my dream, Volkswagen's US headquarters is in my town. I was driving by the headquarters (a giant, non-descript brick and steel siding building without windows) when I noticed out of the corner of my eye a white, 4-door VW Beetle driving through the parking lot, flickering in and out of sight was it passed between parked cars. I instantly thought of photographing it for C&G with my phone, so I turned in to the restricted parking lot and made a loop, searching for the prototype. Then I saw it, parallel parked in front of the building by …

HOWEVER, check out this little guy... the Sony QRIO...he can throw balls, rollerskate, pick himself up after being pushed over, and probably even walk correctly up stairs. Not sure which is the best forum to stick this- would be nice to be seen publicly- move thread at will. Nice overview of many of the GM plants, esp with the names from the heights of GM's success. 'NUMMI' may have significance to those into Vibes & matrixes, but 'Fremont' built the cars people treasure & collect. This info (and more) will eventually get into the upcoming C&G Wiki, but this is especially nice because there are numerous pics. Even driving by these sites seldom gives any indication of the size of these complexes. http://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/index.spark?aBID=118110&p=3&topicID=37134625&page=1&sort=newestFirst

Why is asking for and/or accepting the help of others so seemingly taboo? I'm exhausted and so tired I can't even sleep, which is not good, since I have to be at work Thursday and Friday. But, trying to do my best to help my parents at home after their surgeries (Mom donated a kidney to Dad), while doing what I need to do ... and trying to make my sister understand that I AM helping Dad and Mom ... is starting to grate on my nerves. I love helping Dad and Mom, especially after the sacrifices they have made, but when they won't LET me help them as my sister insists I need to ... it frustrates me. Thus the somewhat re-worded, semi-rhetorical query I posed to start thi…

Did the Astro and Safari vans have a lot of issues with build quality. I was at work at Canadian Tire and in 4 hours, 3 people called to ask if we carried a replacement mirror for an Astro. First one I thought was a coincidence, then the second one was on the phone and it started to get me wondering. I had about 2 cases of that last Tuesday I worked. I asked everybody if they had already been in or sent somebody in looking for that but they said no. This is kind of odd because that was just 5 cases in 2 weeks or technically 2 work days. But we didn't carry them so I told everybody to go to the dealer for the new mirror. Has anyone else heard of this happening? The driver'…

Had to get some attention grabbing title in there . "Chairman Mao Zedong, a fan of the red but not so much of the white or the blue, once said, “I got more hoes than the ozone.” Oh wait, it might have been Abraham Lincoln who said that. The quote we were Google-searching for from Chairman Mao was something about asymmetric warfare, about how a fighter must move amongst the people as a fish swims in the sea, which is way more poetic and stuff. And what we have here is a classic asymmetric fight; a battle in which one side is conventionally powerful and established and the other is a fish. All of this brings us inextricably to the showdown that neither Chevrol…

They asked the chairman how many people have applied from other plants to transfer/work at his when a job opening becomes available such as somebody that takes the buy-out. The answer they got was shocking. Just three people have said they would move to his plant to keep their job. My take? GM is going to be royally screwed by the # of employees taking the buy out and it will catch them off guard in a big way. Watch for them to hire off the streets in the 4th quarter.

Yup, Borders Books, in the periodicals I was, looking at the car magazines (with my back to the gay magazines) when these two guys, dressed up-to-the-minute, 20-something, walk up to the gay magazine section. One of them pulls up a copy of "Gay Times" and laughs. They both look at the dude on the cover, then laugh again. "Hey, we should send in a subscription for (insert a missing friend's name here). That would be hilarious! We could put his address on it and everything!" They linger there, then move on... I need to ask a question here... what's the fascination? Would they have had as much fun looking at a yoga magazine? A magazine on knitting, rock climbing,…
