Just watched the first few episodes of DEXTER on OnDemand. Boy am I hooked to this show. Not often do I get sucked into a TV show. I've actually always considered people who are addicted to television to be sad. I like to LIVE life, not just experience life vicariously through a two-dimensional media. That being said I love this show. It's such an awsome premise to have a dark hero "serial-killer-killer" or perhaps it's more like "serial-serial-killer" or is it "serial-killer-killing-serial-killer"? Thoughts? Other fans of the show?

I wonder how long it will take for the negative PR wheels to start turning on this one... BARKHAMSTED, Conn. -- Fire officials suspect an electric hybrid car may have sparked an overnight blaze in a garage in Barkhamsted on Center Hill Road. Homeowner Storm Connors and his wife, Dee, said they awoke to the sound of a smoke alarm around 4 a.m. The couple said they have lived in the home for nearly 40 years. They built it and raised their children there, so when the flames took over their attached garage Thursday morning, burning it down to its beams, the couple started to panic. They said they were worried they were going to lose their home and the memories inside. "I w…

So, you all know I lost my job with the energy company almost exactly a year ago. Then Covid hit and jobs became scarce. I got a contracting job in June with a local government as their Project Manager and also acting as Director of I.T. Well, Friday (tomorrow), my contract is officially up. My boss has decided to extend my contract by 30 days and then January 11th, hired me as a direct employee. I'll be getting a 5-digit raise to come on plus my health insurance costs will drop by about $4700 a year. We're still figuring out the title, but at the moment Director of Special Projects is most likely. I really enjoy working there and I'm happy to have this whole…

From the CATO Institute. Mourning the Loss of a Great American Capitalist While the big news of the day wouldn’t seem to have a public policy angle, Michael Jackson’s death allows us to remember that such phenomenal career achievements can only be possible in an economic system that rewards and harnesses talent. The King of Pop’s creativity allowed him and his family to make hundreds of millions of dollars, yes, but it also created thousands of jobs in the music and marketing industries and brought joy to fans around the world. Whatever his personal eccentricities — perhaps, in part, as a result of them — Jackson represents a capitalit success story. No central pl…

I saw a green and white Prius taxi today in traffic..I googled and found this article: From the Denver Business Journal: ---Metro Taxi doubled its fleet of hybrid vehicles on Denver streets Monday, bringing the total to 10. The addition of the five new Toyota Hybrid Prius is in keeping with a pledge Metro Taxi made in late May to replace all 500 vehicles in its fleet with hybrids. Metro Taxi said replacing one of its taxis with a Prius is equal to converting five non-commercial vehicles to hybrids. The company estimates converting its entire fleet will save 3 million gallons of gas a year.

Has anyone noticed the proliferation of round, red taillights on vehicles these days? No matter the outward shape of the lens, the lit part is increasingly the same on so many vehicles nowadays. Everything from a Hyundai Elantra to a Chrysler 300 has these same, round illuminations when seen at night. BORING!

a friend called today and we were BSing cars and he mentioned how some neighbors gave in to the toyota tide. normally, he said, they buy a lightly used domestic, on payments and keep it a few and trade it. now, this time, they were enticed by toyota nation and a 179/mo lease on the camry. basic 4 cylinder automatic. who knows what the down payment was, and its very few miles....but i wonder how much of this cheap lease dumping is keeping toyota's numbers up. that and fleets. and then the cars hit auction after a couple years. in any case, toyota must be able to prop up those lease deals with good residuals that are no doubt a factor of their reputation. why buy a …

I asked in the tech section a question about a coworker's 1991 Chevy Caprice not too long ago. http://www.cheersandgears.com/forums/index...showtopic=10943 John wanted to get it fixed so that his newly-licensed son would have a car to drive. Well, his wife didn't want him to drive the Caprice, so they went out and bought a new Honda Accord (for the wife, not the son!). The son will now drive a 2001 Impala. John is thinking of donating the car to the American Red Cross motor pool (local one that resells donated cars to raise cash) or some other "donate your car for a tax break" place. Now my question is should I offer to buy it? I don't need a 4th car, but I do li…

So tonight I was thinking to myself how cool it would be to have more eight tracks since I now own two vehicles with a functioning eight track player. I currently only have two, which means Jimi Hendrix Smash Hits is getting boring in the brown '78 Coupe DeVille and Led Zeppelin III is getting overplayed in the yellow '77. Do any of you guys have any you'd be willing to part with? If so, let me know!

Welcome to the latest update of Steve (MyerShift) and his Plymouth Breeze. Rapidly approaching, Thursday will signify the second full week I have been without my car. First, it took the dealership forever to figure out what the problem itself was (and I've heard that Volkswagen dealerships are questionable). Second, problem found regarding failing fuel pump. I was quoted Tuesday (today- January 16, 2007) as the day I would be able to pick up my car. So, I scrounged the money together for what I do have to pay regarding the repair, and I called Team Hillsdale Chrysler before leaving Coldwater to make sure that I could pick up my car, which leads us to: Third, I can't g…

I went to Palm Sunday mass today at St. Peter's and saw the Pope! One of our instructors knows someone here in Rome who was able to get us tickets so we could have seats in the piazza rather than standing, so I was in the middle near the obelisk. I was surrounded by mostly Italian speakers, but there were people from Poland, Germany, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, and a ton of other countries there (flying flags). The mass was long...about 3 hours...and the sun was beating down on my neck, but it was definitely an experience. I'm not that religious of a Catholic, but being there and hearing singing echo throughout the whole piazza and hearing tens of thousands clapping at the…

There was a time, at its height, that GM owned around 60% of the vehicle market in the United States. There was talk of government intervention to prevent GM from becoming too big. My question to the group is: Let's say it is 2010, and GM still commanded such huge market share. What would we be driving? What manufacturers would be present here? What would competitors' lineups look like, with GM holding such influence over the overall market?

It appears the weather will be cooperating (for the most part) for this year's massive Spring Cruise at Ocean City, MD. Thousands of hot cars of every description will descend on the ocean resort town starting today and running through the weekend. I'll be heading down Saturday morning to join some family members and probably spending the night. At a time like this I wish I had a digital camera so I could post a hugh jass picture thread when I get back. Is anyone else from here heading to Ocean City for this awesome event?

Hey guys, On thursday I'm leaving with the family and one of my friends to Maui. We are staying at Napili. My family has been there a couple times before, and I've been once before when I was a lot younger. I don't remember too much from it. My buddy is excited because he hasn't been there before, and he loves fish so he is planning on snorkeling and scuba/snuba diving and just hanging out in the water for the most part. Does anyone know of any activities to do around there? Like in the Ka'anapali area or Lahaina or wherever? There will always be the snorkeling/diving options, but I was also thinking maybe parasailing, or personal watercraft rentals or just something a …

I see I only posted one previous #RacingFriday thread with Ken Gushi & Tyler McQuarrie so if the admins don't mind merging it would be cool. So, anyway, onto today's post. In the video below you can see a near miss at 140mph. The driver exhibits some real skill but, as far as I can tell, he's an amateur (he may want to reconsider that). What a way to start a holiday..... I got word this morning that an old friend of mine was killed in an accident at home. I don't know the entire details. He is survived by his partner of 12+ years. What I'm thankful for, more than anything else, is the love and devotion from my partner Albert. Through the most trying of times he is there with me ready to do whatever needs to be done to get through... and he deserves a lot of credit for putting up with a grump like me. I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving holiday. I plan on laying low the rest of the week. Try not to fight too much.

I've been super busy so I have not had a chance to report on my experience with the curse... On a cold, icy road the other day, going downhill in the freezing rain and slowing down to a stop at a red light the X-Terra in front of me stopped very abruptly. I was about two car length's behind the truck in my Datsun & as I slid to a stop on a sheet of ice I bumped the X-Earth's trailer hitch with my little Maxima's headlight/blinker & cut the top of the matte black bumper cover. I was pissed at myself, first off I was on the clock so I HAD to get to a delivery, and second despite absolutely no damage to her cast iron trailer hitch my Datsun had…

I can hardly believe it has been a month since my road trip ENDED. It's been a rough few weeks since I got back home, which hasn't helped. I finally had the CT Scan of my heart/chest Saturday, August 6, 2011, and, given some other things happening (mostly not-so-good; one maybe good), I may be scarce for a while. I haven't even driven my MCs much this year ... MAYBE 100 miles so far on each of them. I kinda doubt I'll get 1,000 miles on 'em this year for what would be the 3rd year in a row. Anxiousness + uncertainty + waiting + powerlessness + helplessness + feeling lost + not feeling well + hating medical crap = NOT a good combo. BUT ... I'm still alive and such. HA…

I've kinda sorta kept up with the new car market and sadly, I'm seeing nary a thing that appeals to me. Everything seems to have gotten fat, heavy and grotesque-looking. Another symptom of my old-guyness, I suppose. Anyhoo, this has made me think about what an ideal vehicle would be for my weird tastes. Here's what I came up with: Something on the order of the original Caravan/Voyager in a (compact) external footprint AND internal dimensions--including height and seating position (the Mazda 5 was heralded as the successor to the original Mopar minivans, but it really wasn't--didn't have the height to stash taller items in the back for one thing, and the seating position…

Alright, well so far we've looked at 3 cars, and will be looking at a 4th tomorrow. So here's some quick stories about the three. Also, besides the Intrepid, these are photos of the actual cars. #1: 2002 Dodge Neon I saw an add for a `02 Dodge Neon. There were two photos of it. The driver's side was banged up, but he said it ran good. Cosmetics didn't bother me because parts are easy to find (I saw 2 of them at the junkyard I went to last week). Yesterday we went to take a look at it, since it was nearby. The guy's English sucks but whatever, he seemed nice enough. I walked around the car, and saw it had seen better days. Driver's doors, fender, hood, and bumper…

Well, wifey did. Salesman friend of ours bid on smart auction and won a '07 Aura XR with 32k miles. Was a GM rental car. Berry red with black leather and moon roof. Auction noted some paint flaws, hope it look ok when they get it up to the dealer. I'm usually quit picky on my vehicles but when the wife drives over 30k miles a year it's hard to get too picky. It's gonna see a lot of the enviroment each day of her commute! Was a bit iffy about it being a rental (but may have been rented/leased to a business??) but 100k powertrain warranty has my nerves settled. I really liked the powertrain and black leather option of the XR, but I suppose the XE would've been the ideal c…

Considering that GM has been bashed for all too long. I have my own issues with a Honda (Acura) product. Well, I have a 2005 Acura RSX with 10,000 KMs on it (6,000 mi). I have been having annoying problems since day 1. After my first highway trip in the thing I started to get a strange noise out of the front end while turning the wheel. Well, I brought the car in and they told me it was a strut mount. So a few weeks later when the part came in, it was replaced. The noise disappeared for a week. So, I go back again, and they tell me it is the strut. So I wait 6 weeks for the part to come in. They replace that. Guess what, the noise went away, until my trip to Banff. Now I…

So, I used to do these threads over at MT, and I think I'm going to start them back up here. The premise is simple. I'll post two or more vehicles and you decide which one you'd want. You can decide this based on if you were spending your own money, if they were free, however. The vehicles may all be in one class, or they may be totally different. I'll give a hint as to what is contained in the thread title. It sparks up discussion, it's fun to fantasize, and it takes some thought. So after some back story, here are your first choices- A piece over @ R&T made this a simple duo to start off with. Two vehicle that have battled it out for over 2 decades both …

on somethin other than prostitutes or drugs... check out the boys at MIT are up to this time. The cheapest space camera available to the public. The two students (from MIT, of course) put together a low-budget rig to fly a camera high enough to photograph the curvature of the Earth. Instead of rockets, boosters and expensive control systems, they filled a weather balloon with helium and hung a styrofoam beer cooler underneath to carry a cheap Canon A470 compact camera. Instant hand warmers kept things from freezing up and made sure the batteries stayed warm enough to work. Of course, all this would be pointless if the guys couldn’t find the rig when it landed, so…

Industry won’t expand refineries since demand for gas will remain the same! WASHINGTON - A push from Congress and the White House for huge increases in biofuels, such as ethanol, is prompting the oil industry to scale back its plans for refinery expansions. That could keep gasoline prices high, possibly for years to come. With President Bush calling for a 20 percent drop in gasoline use and the Senate now debating legislation for huge increases in ethanol production, oil companies see growing uncertainty about future gasoline demand and little need to expand refineries or build new ones. Oil industry executives no longer believe there will be the demand for gasoline ov…

I was wondering if any of you guys could give me advice on a camera tripod. The one I have is old and well, a piece of crap. It's held together with J-B Weld, lacks the features I want, but worst of all, can't hold the camera steady. So here's my criteria: Durable, but fairly lightweight Must be able to tilt the camera 90 degrees and be able to pan up and down...at the very least. Detachable release plate. $50 is the limit...I can go a little over but I'd prefer not too...on a budget. Now, I'm gonna have to take a trip to the camera store and play with some to see how the features work...because I don't know exactly how a 90 vertical platform works...for example.…

The Cruze is being introduced to the US in 2010 and so is BAS II. GM has stated that BAS II is platform flexible, unlike BAS I. The press release and interviews about BAS II seemed to focus alot around the use of a turbo with the system. Could GM be "smart" enough to introduce BAS II with the Cruze? What about the Orlando? If the combined gas mileage for a 1.4L Turbo Cruze was 32 mpg, which is not unreasonable considering statements made by the company, than a Cruze with the 1.4L Turbo, with flexfuel capability, and BAS II could/should be 38 to 39 combined mpg. That would provide some major help to GMs EPA #s and would be great PR.

Fake news has been in the press a lot lately, so I figured let's generate some of our own. Rules: 1. It has to be automotive related, no politics, not even a hint of politics. 2. It has to be plausible enough to be believable by someone who isn't a car enthusiast. (I.E., no Tucker is not resuming operations, no GM is not reviving Pontiac) 3. Write it as if it were a press release or news announcement.

Don't hurt me for this one but we really are. I'm part of a drug prevention group in school and the teacher who is over the whole thing is also my 4th period teacher. As the only active group in our school that does anything after school wise, our teacher has made it a tradition to always be the head of the senoir party and basicaly direct everything that happens. And what happens? My lack of a life popped in and now im having to help her with the Senior party to direct it. We need ideas. ones that dont suck. Please help

Linkity 'Infectious' People Spread Memes Across the Web 08:45 12 August 2009 by Colin Barras The way that certain images, videos or concepts can suddenly spread like wildfire across the web, using email and social websites to propagate, is one of online culture's most unique phenomena. Now Spanish researchers claim to have found a way to accurately predict how quickly and widely new pieces of information, or "memes" as they are called, will spread. The ability to forecast this "viral" behaviour would be of great interest to sociologists and marketeers, among others. The secret, they say, is to recognise the fact that peo…

Cars.com "For the second year in a row, Cars.com’s American-Made Index ranks all qualifying vehicles built and bought in the U.S., not just the top 10 or 15 models. With results directly comparable to those of the 2020 American-Made Index, the 2021 study ranks 90 vehicles through the same five major criteria: assembly location, parts content, engine origins, transmission origins and U.S. manufacturing workforce." Top 20: 1. Tesla Model 3: Fremont, Calif. (4) 2. Ford Mustang: Flat Rock, Mich. (34) 3. Tesla Model Y: Fremont, Calif. (unranked) 4. Jeep Cherokee: Belvidere, Ill. (2) 5. Chevrolet Corvette: Bowling Green, Ky. (8) 6. Honda Ridgeline: Lincoln…

Who's (on) First? It seems there's a minor collective historical shift going on. The Buick Motor Company was incorporated May 19, 1903. The Cadillac Automobile Company was incorporated August 22, 1902. With the demise of Oldsmobile, the previous longest manufacturer in the U.S., Wikipedia (and other) sources have reshuffled the criteria a bit. Wikipedia currently says this in the Cadillac entry : >>"Cadillac is currently the second oldest American automobile manufacturer behind Buick and among the oldest automobile brands in the world. Depending on how one chooses to measure, Cadillac is arguably older than Buick. Since GM has discontinued offering Oldsmobil…

So, to expand on the first part of this, we are doing something a little different. In Part 1, you had a total to spend using the New Car Average Transaction Price multiplied to cover 5 vehicles. This round, you will be limited to a per car amount of $36,495. There is no limit to how cheap your selections can be, but they can't be any more than the average price. Rules- 1) Must be New cars on sale NOW 2017 or 2018 Model Year 2) Cars must be available in YOUR market 3) These are your only vehicles 4) You are granted 5 choices 5) I will allow ONE non-mainstream production car- motorcycle, trike, side-x-side, etc 6) MSRP can be NO MO…

Anyone else watching? So far Vince Young and Texas are dominating, but OSU just had a really good punt return and have great field position. I think this game could be an instant classic.

Okay, I've had the '96 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham for a little over a month now and other than giving it a quick washing it once, I haven't done much to it - though it needs some TLC and soon. The black sierra grain leather is in pretty good shape for it's age, though it is dry and hard. I know it needs a good cleaning and then conditioning, and hopefully that will make it more appealing to the eye and maybe more supple. Anyone have some product suggestions and/or methods I should use to clean and condition the leather? I'm use to dealing with leather in new cars - so the methods & products I have I don't think will give me the results I want. Also, the car was …

I thought I'd make a special edition of "In Retrospect" to show you a rare concept from Chrysler's defunct Eagle brand. This little oddity has been plucked from the internet instead of the vast "Car & Driver" archives normally used. Beware. It's got some Jazz. 1995 (?) Eagle Jazz: And while were at it, why not take a look at one big bastard of a truck that should've been in "Twister"? 1997 Dodge T-Rex:

So in the same vein of the displacement threads, I thought this would be a fun take on it. We'll use a broader displacement range, but limit choices to vehicles that use forced induction. Rules- 1)Production only. 2)These are your only vehicles. 3)Maximum of 5 choices. 4)Any era and market is allowed. 5)Vehicles must have no more than 4.0 liters of displacement, and must be supercharged/turbocharged. Have fun guys.

I consider myself a decent typist, prob. about 50wpm or so if I'm just typing on the fly, as opposed to transcribing. Typos creep in, of course, but I find there are a few that I do very frequently, because of a particular series of keys that are close to one another, etc. 1- "teh" for "the"- ooh, that one bugs the crap outta me! Seems tho that it has become a "real" word on the internet; ugh. 2- "form" for "from"- funny thing is, I never do it the other way around 3- "fomr" for "from"- WTF? This one's like a total breakdown of my finger synchronization, yikes 4- "wierd" for &q…

Vanity Fair Thousands upon thousands of government employees take to the streets to protest the bill. Here is Greece’s version of the Tea Party: tax collectors on the take, public-school teachers who don’t really teach, well-paid employees of bankrupt state railroads whose trains never run on time, state hospital workers bribed to buy overpriced supplies. Here they are, and here we are: a nation of people looking for anyone to blame but themselves. The Greek public-sector employees assemble themselves into units that resemble army platoons. In the middle of each unit are two or three rows of young men wielding truncheons disguised as flagpoles. Ski masks and gas masks …
