Well, the lease on the Malibu is coming to an end in a month. I started looking for a replacement, but it has been interesteing so far. Not really a fan of anything smaller than my previous gen Malibu. So I visit the Chevy dealer and the only things they offer are a Silverado or possibly a Volt in the equipment/price range I'd like. Went to the Buick/GMC/Cadillac dealer and looked at Regal & LaCrosse. The offerings are pretty pricey even for a mid-level vehicle of either. So, I visited a Dodge dealer and looked at a Charger R/T that was nicely loaded and reasonably priced. Is it time to own my first new Dodge?

Well yesterday at work we ran out of jobs to process so they had to send me and a bunch of other people home, and I had today off. My boss told me to call him this afternoon to see if there was work for Wednesday. I called and left a message. He just called me back and told me that unfortunately, our customers have no more jobs to send us.Normally there's work up until the 2nd or 3rd week of December but for whatever reason we've already gone though all of the work for the season. So I got laid off. He said I'm eligible for unemployment, and that he would send information about it with my check. He also said that I did good work and offered to put me on the call back l…

It's one of those things that remind you of your own mortality, I guess...a coworker and friend of mine who was only slightly older than I (37) died today at work... they believe it was a heart attack. Found him slumped over in his chair in his cube.

4-1-07/ GM Headquarters: Today, Rick Wagoner has announced an unanomous decision to cancel all further production of the GMC Acadia. "With the Saturn Outlook and the upcoming Chevrolet Lambda (called "Criuse," just announced today) on the roads, and GMC being known for a tough-truck brand, it will be pulled from the production line." There is a rumor that a replacement, supposedly more rigid and GMC-like, according to insiders, is expected to debut at the Frankfurt show. Recalls for the Acadia are planned to start Tuesday, along with production halt. "The idea of pulling the Acadia off the market is probably a good idea, for GMC's sake and its reputation." Bob Lutz …

Son of a friend was given a nice clean older Bonneville SSE as a high school graduation gift. Only problem was the headliner was loose and he was told he would have to fix it. So the kid gets an air powered staple gun and staples the headliner back in place. ....And then gets out to notice what has happened to the roof of the car. At least his mother is footing the bill to fix the thing. Chris

It's only for a week, but she has to travel to Kansas from here (MA) to put her stuff in storage since she broke the lease to her apartment. We had her car's oil changed and looked at, seems ok...but this is deffinitely one of those times I hope Toyota's quality is as good as they say. It hurts like hell that I can't go with her because of school and mid-terms...and it may be a week but I miss her already...it's our first time apart since May. It was a teary goodbye. If it's not too much trouble just wish her luck and a safe trip, it'd me a lot to me...thanks.

I recently joined the Society of Automotive Engineers so I am able to attend a few seminars this year at the 2007 World Conference in April at Cobo Hall. They have some interesting presentations like Diesel Emissions and Aftertreatment Devices: Design and Durability, Catalytic Converters: Design and Durability, Fundamentals of All-Wheel Drive Systems, and the AVL Technology Theater. http://www.sae.org/congress/ So I was just wondering if anyone else was a member, or planning on attending any of the upcoming SAE events?

I put down Bleu Cheese because that's what I insitictively ordered as a kid or teenager. However, the reality of it is that the brand of bleu cheese made a world of difference. Nothing can touch the bleu cheese from Bob's Big Boy. I used to put it on my Big Boy combo's salad and order a side of it in which to dip my fries. I would now say that Thousand Islands seems to be more reliable. It's almost always good whereas Bleu Cheese is more variable. I do NOT like Italian dressing...it's kind of boring. However, the Italians think we're weird because we put "mayonnaise on our salad," as one commented to me. What type of dressing do you prefer?

Linkity Saleen S5S Raptor Concept By David Gluckman After teasing us with a concept sketch last month, Saleen has officially unveiled the S5S Raptor concept in New York. We now know that the Saleen 5.0-liter supercharged engine (from whence comes the car's alphanumerics) is a version of the company's tuned Ford V-8 block. Unlike the Mustang creations that Saleen is most famous for, the two-seat car has been designed and styled from the ground up with a mid-engine layout. The chassis is all-aluminum and is wrapped in a composite skin. The Raptor's V-8 runs on E85 ethanol which allows it to produce more power than the similar po…

So what kicked off this search was my reading Oldsmoboi's post, "If Mazda survives that long", and thinking, "What a wierd thing to say!". It got me thinking, I wonder if Mazda is only doing well here in Canada. So here are some graphs I dug up. Mazda outsells Nissan here in Canada, where in the US they get beaten almost 4-to-1. Also, note the American GM-Ford-Toyota podium vs. Ford-Chrysler-GM in Canada.

What does your city / town / state use to clear the roads of snow? My state was all about salt until about 5 years ago when they began to switch to a combination of de-icer chemical and sand. It doesn't do as good of a job of clearing the roads (usually results in a slushy mess that eventually melts away when temps warm), but the combination is supposedly less harmful to vehicle paint than salt. I'm not sure how much I believe that though, because the rocker panels of my '94 Lumina have rusted far faster than my previous '90 Lumina that was mostly exposed to salt.

It's that time of year when the Salvation Army guys are standing on busy street corners or outside your local supermarket with their red bucket while jingling their little bell. I don't really mind giving when I have change. I've given a dollar here and there but does anybody feel pangs of guilt or selfishness when you simply walk past the guys or say you don't have any change (whether you do or not)? I dunno....even when I really don't have any change on me, I feel a liitle guilt.

I just ordered Sirius today. I was asking for satellite radio it for Christmas but Circuit City has a sale on a certain receiver ($100 off) and Sirius is giving another $50 off so that means a $150 receiver is free. I'm not going to hardwire it to my car because I don't feel like dealing with the problems of doing it myself or paying to have it done professionally, plus I'm asking for the home kit for Christmas now. I'll just do it through FM transmission. I chose Sirius over XM mainly because of the deal on the receiver but I've signed up for free trials for both (on their websites) and Sirius has played a lot more music I like. So…

I decided that I want Satellite Radio. I spend a lot of time on the road or in the field, so I figure that it would be a wise investment in my future entertainment. My Suburban is XM ready so I could add that easily, and my Pioneer deck in my Impala could have either tuner and antenna added to it for about 50 bucks on ebay and an hour's worth of tinkering around in the car. You can have 2 tuners for 20 bucks a month with either service, so I would probably have one dedicated system in one of the vehicles. If I were to go with Sirius I would put a dedicated tuner in my Impala and then have a Mobile unit in my Suburban that I could take out on the lake in the summer, in…

General Motors’ Pontiac Solstice and Saturn’s Sky both posted massive numbers out of the sales gates, but at least one of the two sports cars’ fortunes are flagging. According to the New York Times, sales of the curvaceous Solstice have dropped 19 percent versus last year through the end of July, and GM suddenly has a glut of Pontiac-branded roadsters on its hands—nearly five months of inventory. Conversely, its under-the-skin twin, the Saturn Sky, continues to sell well, with a one-month inventory and an actual wait time for delivery. So what’s going on here? Author Nick Bunkley seems to feel it’s a product of Saturn’s rising star in GM’s portfolio, and Pontiac’s statu…

This is my 'Save The Buick' jar. All the money I've put toward my '59 to date (and it's a lot) has been side money, or non paycheck money.... except for dimes. 2nd largest coin denomination (who regularly sees half- or whole dollar coins?), and not as 'in demand' around here as quarters. I found this Ball mason jar in the woods behind my house, and it had character (chipped mouth, what looks like a BB hole in one side). I know that I'm normally not one to go and post things that would likely turn someone's stomach, but I've got to say this one. On the drive home this afternoon I was witness to an accident. This was a pretty bad one, Peterbilt 379 vs new Mustang. I've had basic first-responder training, and it happened about 30 seconds before I really arrived on scene but it was still bad. Looks like the Mustang ran the light, or was the last car in the line to turn and thought she could make it, but either way you slice it, 80,000-lb Pete doing 55mph through the green broadside into a new 'stang isn't going to be just a fender patch and move on. I have to wait and see how it does but i think it will do as good as the GTO, but i hope a i am wrong. As the crowds around it where pretty big as people where trying to figure out what it was. it looks like the new emblem is staying. the wheels look nice and under the hood is very clean. Today (Thursday), I’ve rested & watched TV, including an hour private investigating in California, an hour sleuthing in Maine, an hour housekeeping in Pittsburgh PA, then back to California to patrol the highways & now NCAA March Madness. [if only road tripping were really THAT easy!] Have a list of things to do, but not ready to tackle much. My lef…

All right, for all of y'all who don't know what I do with my spare time, this is some of it right here. I have built all of these models, along with many more at my parent's house, hanging from the ceiling, and even more than that that have met their fate during my annual 4th of July celebration. Don't mind the dust and I hope y'all enjoy.

* Among my many hobbies is my HO scale model train layout, with many iconic places across the US. But, I enjoy the work of an OC,SHer. His scale layout is Metro City; this is a scene from 2 Trees Mall: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/17/wednesday-ratio-22/ An old Motorola radio still in use in an old Ford: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/17/wednesday-wrap-22/ Which would you rather have &/or drive: Pontiac or Camaro? Between the website & the Facebook page, seems the overwhelming majority is for the Pontiac! http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/18/thursday-survey-22/ Cannot remember the last time I was able to just go cruising,…

What is a good affordable scanner with an Auto Document Feeder that can scan about 50 pages a go, and has a decent image quality and an excellent software? Films and other stuff scanning capability will be a plus, but more than anything I want to scan my magazines and get rid of the paper crap. I found this one: HP Flatbed ADF Scanner What do you guys think?

* Bet many can identify with this: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/03/18/daily-dose-wake-up-wed-9/ With 4 open heart surgeries & 1 pacemaker replacement, I’ve a number of roadmaps. Some scars will be refreshed when I go in for another pacemaker replacement next Wednesday, 03/25/2015; unlike last time, hopefully this WILL be a simple outpatient procedure with no overnight hospital stay…! While watching NCAA’s March Madness on Thursday, I made some tweaks to my website & added a page for articles I’ve written: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/my-articles/ Haven’t decided if I’m going to put all of my road trip pics there somehow or not. Cort …

So for the second time in six months my Impala has been the victim of the CURSE. My car was parked in front of a friend's house last night when some dough head in a big GMC Sierra 2500 decided to do a 3-point turn and backed right into my car's left front fender. The upshot is that at the least, the fender is f@#ked in every way imaginable. Driving with a learners permit and didn't even feel the impact. Also the bumper probably needs to be replaced too since the little mounting holes for the wheel well liner are completely torn and deformed. I've no idea how fast the truck was backing up but I would hope that the unibody hasn't been somehow damaged. Regardless, I'm …

I went to the mall this morning to get my hair did (1 on the sides, 6 on top with a fade), and noticed the parking lot was sort of full. Turns out the SCCA was having an autocross event in a cordoned-off section of the lot. Oh man, was that fun to watch! Mostly ricers with a smattering of domestics, the cars represented a wide range, from a PT Cruiser convertible driven by a middle-aged lady, to a new Z06 driven by a slightly thinner Santa Claus (car sounded WAY HOT going through the cones!), and a Lotus Elise (dude spun it, dummy). There were Cobalt SS/SCs, ION Redlines, a lot of Miatas, Mini Coopers, WRXs and Evos... even an old Lumina Z34 DOHC coupe with a 5 speed!…

Vanity Fair Thousands upon thousands of government employees take to the streets to protest the bill. Here is Greece’s version of the Tea Party: tax collectors on the take, public-school teachers who don’t really teach, well-paid employees of bankrupt state railroads whose trains never run on time, state hospital workers bribed to buy overpriced supplies. Here they are, and here we are: a nation of people looking for anyone to blame but themselves. The Greek public-sector employees assemble themselves into units that resemble army platoons. In the middle of each unit are two or three rows of young men wielding truncheons disguised as flagpoles. Ski masks and gas masks …

MASSILON, Ohio - Evidence of the slumping economy is stacking up at an Ohio school which has nearly 700 applications for one open janitorial job. Officials at Perry Local Schools near Canton in northeast Ohio say they've extended the deadline until Monday to accommodate the overwhelming response to the week-old posting. The full-time position at Edison Junior High School pays $15 to $16 an hour plus benefits. Superintendent John Richard says many applicants are laid-off workers with heart-wrenching stories about the tough economic times. Donna Croston, 49, said she applied after losing jobs at two nearby factories that closed. Croston said her chances of being h…

Well, for the most part at least. Today was the last real day of high school for me. I still have to finish up some Calculus (Final Exam, take home test, and 3 HWs - the teacher always piles stuff on at the end) but other than that I'm home free. I'm not going tomorrow as I have until Thursday to finish up the Calc. Who else is out of school or close?

Now this goes against the grain.... ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A Russian astronomer has predicted that Earth will experience a "mini Ice Age" in the middle of this century, caused by low solar activity. Khabibullo Abdusamatov of the Pulkovo Astronomic Observatory in St. Petersburg said Monday that temperatures will begin falling six or seven years from now, when global warming caused by increased solar activity in the 20th century reaches its peak, RIA Novosti reported. Scientist predicts 'mini Ice Age' Those crazy Russians.

As reported in the National Post yesterday, http://www.financialpost.com/story.html?id=445465 : "The online science magazine Tomorrow's Discoveries, which specializes in breaking major science news before it actually happens, reports the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (Gv), has one neutron, 29 assisstant neutrons, some 100 deputy neutrons, and 222 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 352. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it…

[...] But those involved hope their ambitious goal of simulating the tangle of neurons and synapses that power our thought processes could offer solutions to tackling conditions such as depression, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's. The Human Brain venture is the next step in a long-running program that has already succeeded in using computers to create a virtual replica of part of a rat's neocortex -- a section of the brain believed to control higher functions such as conscious thought, movement and reasoning. Scientists at its forerunner, the Switzerland-based Blue Brain Project, have been working since 2005 to feed a computer with vast quantities of data and algor…

So, I went to the Renaissance Faire today. Has anyone else been to one of these things? It was pretty fun I guess, in a cheesy kind of way. Lots of kilts to celebrate Scottish Weekend. Yeah, I was checking out some ppl in kilts, sue me, some of them were dead sexy. I tried some haggis, a traditional Scottish food... a totally disgusting mix of miscellaneous sheep parts, spices ,and what I believe to be rice or something... it turns out looking like gray dog puke *shiver*. Waaay too much food overall, lots of little shows and acts, a jousting tournament with pyrotechnics... all in all, a good day.

I'm probably about to make two stupid moves before going into college, one of them being me buying a brand-new twenty-one thousand dollar Camaro. Well, chances are I'm going to make another stupid move on top of that. Meet the two cars that qualify for my second mistake. 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, 327 V8: 1967 Pontiac Firebird, 350 V8: The cost of both cars are $4,500. Both cars are roughly in the same shape: mild amounts of rust, the floorboards rotting away to nothing (as you can see in the second-to-last pics in both sets), but I know the Camaro's 327 runs pretty well and could make for a better daily driver during restoratio…

Post all of your favorite crash videos here. Any kind of accident, rollover, car fire or explosion welcome. I'll start off with a few Hondas getting destroyed or just #&$%ed up since I HATE Honda/Acura cars like the dickens. Is that a Adidas shoe or a car? No real damage to this S2000, but it's funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAlj5qSqkxg...h=crash%20honda This one is retarded, it's... well... just watch. First Step before going racing: check brakes.

I take part in the Sprint Employee Purchase Plan which allows me to designate a certain % of my salary every pay check for Sprint stock at a discounted rate. Basically I gained $101.05 though this program but forgot to include in my tax filings with H&R Block. Next year I suppose I'll have to claim this, or do I not claim anything until I cash out the investment?

I did it Monday night. I was breaking down a cardboard box to get it to fit in the garbage can, and it came up and nailed me in the right eye. Tuesday morning it was absolutely excruciating - it wouldn't stay open or stop tearing. I went to the hospital, and they sent me home with a prescription for antibiotic eyedrops and two Percocets (stupid pills). I spent most of Tuesday and yesterday in little to no light. Today is the first day I can tolerate a computer screen without pain. My vision is still blurry and will take a week to heal, so no riding this weekend.

http://www.scuderigroup.com/ So I have to say this engine technology is cool and I wonder when we will see it in auto's. I know this engine technology has been mentioned in other threads. Thought I would start a thread dedicated to the Scuderi Engine. Cool updated demo's with new updat PDF files to read. What do you think? Will we see a Scuderi in the future at GM, Ford or some other Auto company?
