* Put lots of energy & excitement into my road trips 2002-2011, but believe my most-memorable was Route 66, September 2009. A fun part was exploring towns, particularly town squares, like this in Girard IL: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/23/tuesday-trip-23/ Any guesses as to the car to which this engine belongs!? http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/23/daily-dose-trivia-tue-23/ Cort www.oldcarsstronghearts.com 1979 & 1989 Caprice Classics | pigValve, paceMaker, cowValve "Nothing lasts forever" __ Simple Plan __ 'Perfect'

I need a DVR...I am not home during the primetime TV hours and would love to still keep up with a few of the shows that are on. Getting a DVR from my cable provider isn't a possibility because that would mean I would have to move up to digital cable. Meaning that I would owe the the cable company about 40 bucks more a month after box rental and all the jazz. Not worth it just for the DVR because I would only watch maybe one or two of the extra channels. My only answers would maybe be moving to DirecTV with a DVR for like 25 bucks more a month (a lot more channels and a little better quality) or I could simply get a TiVo at $13 a month if I commited to a 3 year contra…

As of the middle of November I had my German bank accounts set up. as of now, my friends are purchasing a large two level, 3 bedroom, flat just off of Luxemburger Strasse. I will be renting a bedroom from them on the first floor. The married couple will live on the second floor. Their move in date would likely be around April '08. I will follow a few months later. The pictures I've seen of it are great! There will be more pictures coming.

A family friend of ours just got an Enclave before Christmas. He wanted to upgrade the speakers so we tore it apart today and put in new speakers all the way around and a new 4 channel amp. Infinity Kappa Perfect Components and an MTX 4-channel for anyone who knows or cares about audio. Let me first say that everything I took apart was put together VERY well. Better than any vehicle I've done stereo work in fact. Kudos GM. As is the trend, the electronics are more complex than anything else I've worked in, but after a couple hours of rewiring, bypassing the factory amp, and some troubleshooting after that with my buddy who works at a local car audio dealer, we got…

Yeah-Things are getting interesting around here... Suddenly the laughable version of Detroit in Robocop aren't so funny anymore.... Things I've seen today: 1. A push out at Best Buy-which involved rolling over the guy rolling over the employee's arm with the shopping cart who tried to stop it. ( Good news is he wasn't hurt bad-lots of bruises though) 2. A hit and run in a local parking lot....and just pushed that car right into another car and kept going (I can feel for the girls-It happened to the Cobalt a few weeks ago).... I got the plate though. 3. A Domestic dispute in which my Cobalt was KICKED several times...And I got to watch the end of it too... …

Whenever I hear that old chestnut describing a GMC pickup, I take it as a reference to a trusted friend, and I was glad to have my Sierra in the last few days. Sunday, my seven-year old wash machine quit with a tub full of soapy water. After going online and then checking everything I could think of, I decided it was time to head to Lowe's and buy a new washer and dryer (coincidentally, my mom's dryer quit at the same time). So off I went. I felt very good, being able to carry my new stuff home without depending on others. The hard part was getting the washer into the laundry room by myself (I ended up wheeling it in on my creeper, and boy was I sore the next day), b…

@A Horse With No Name gave me a challenge. Here it is! For July 4 Celebrations!!! Rules: 1. Pick a brand. Just 1 brand. A pure red blooded AMERICAN brand. Be it Ford or Chevrolet. Or Dodge. 10 cars any era, any concepts, anything from that brand. 2. No corporate sister brands are allowed. 3. After a pretty harsh winter, I think my cars need a good waxing... Which leads me to an important question: What do you you guys/gals use? I've been a Mothers fan for years(my cav still looks new), but a buddy wants to me to switch to 3M.... He said it offers even more protection from the crappy weather here... Time for the Turtle Wax roll call.... :AH-HA_wink:

WASHINGTON - Alan Greenspan says the country can't afford tax cuts of the magnitude proposed by Republican presidential contender John McCain — at least not without a corresponding reduction in government spending. "Unless we cut spending, no," the former Federal Reserve chairman said Friday when asked McCain's proposed tax cuts, pegged in some estimates at $3.3 trillion. "I'm not in favor of financing tax cuts with borrowed money," Greenspan said during an interview with Bloomberg Television. "I always have tied tax cuts to spending." McCain has said that he would offset his proposed cuts — including reducing the corporate tax rate and eliminating the Alternative M…

The last Sunday of August (August 30, 2009), I had to buy a new battery for my 1981 Monte Carlo SC. I've owned this car since December 1999 (when I bought it from my parents) and have not previously replaced the battery during my time as owner. The old battery was a GM/AC Delco battery. So ... I asked Dad to look through his records to find out when that battery was installed. He looked and found that it was bought and installed February 4, 1997. The '81 MC SC had 167,000 miles at that time. When I replaced that battery, the car had 192,000 miles. Thus ... that GM/AC Delco battery lasted over 12.5 years ... and 25,000 miles. What is the longest a battery has laste…

Been a couple weeks since I was around, thought I'd share my whereabouts. My family bought a "new" house finally, and so the last few weeks have been working on getting it ready to move in to. Check and fix water leaks, clean, paint, etc. It's a multifamily home, split into three (it used to be two) The main area of the first floor is my mom's and the upstairs is where my aunt's family is moving into. The rear section of the first floor was split up some time ago and used as an office, then converted into an apartment. This is where my girlfriend and I are living. So we get our own little place out of this, which is pretty cool. A little privacy yet still being able to …

I put this particular animation together for another forum to because there was some debate about the possibility that the individual images were presented out of sequence. I figured that as my animation is being passed from forum to forum, I might as well let you guys see it. This happened very recently at a "Cruise" event at the local circuit race track. It was a "low speed" cruise event, so helmets weren't required, and the poorly installed 4 point seatbelts proved useless in a rollover. Fortunately there were no serious injuries. The passenger (on the left side ... the car is RHD) received grazes and needed stitches for a gash in her head from hitting the ro…

Today balthazar is happy because today my brother, a good buddy and myself reinstalled the body of my '59 back on it's beefy boxed frame!! So good to have my pride & joy back in only 1 garage bay! No problems to report, no mishaps, only 1 of the 16 bodyshell mounts requiring a bit of prying to align. All new rubber bushings & bolts/washers. Body has 2x3 steel tubing inside the rockers: much like another set of frame rails. This baby is going to be stiff! Even with no weight on it, she sure sits pretty on those 315/60-15 rears. Rear tires fill the wheelwells to perfection. Car height matches factory as it sits (57") but will drop 2 more inches I predict, once do…

There could be a whole bit of research on this topic that would be strictly region-based; however, in our area, this holiday used to be embraced by every house in the neighborhood. Now, I took my own kids in the buggy for their first candy-beggar experience, only to be left feeling like somebody stole the baby-Jesus from the local nativity scene and asking, "What the hell is wrong with people these days?" When I was a kid, a small army of us would trek a 5 mile loop before we'd get home, unload our loot, then have my parents drop us off another 10 miles away in another community so we could circle their area. Every single house had some great spirit with their decorati…

Uh huh... so the question is, have you ever ridden in a Police car? And doing it intentionally or having an ex cop car doesn't count. So... have you? If so.. entertain us with a story. So... why did I start this? Last night... I got a nice ride in a cop car. Yay. I was riding my ATV late at night (no, not nude or without lights again), like around midnight for something to do since I wasn't tired and the electric went out preventing me from getting on the computer last night (I really don't know why... it wasn't storming or anything). Well... I forgot that I had switched to my reserve tank the previous time I took it for a ride. I was riding through the woods near B…

looking on the AutoTrader website I happened to come across a 2005 Cobalt SS SC lease takeover for only $234 per month. I was astonished as I didn't expect a car this nice for anything less than $350 per month, even when leased. I am not worried about the requirement for 91+ octane because I found out that instead of creating a price war by selling cheaper gas, some stations sell 90, 92 and 94 for the prices of 87, 89 and 91 respectively. My budget is pretty tight right now, so I will need a part-time job to pay for it. However, I do have quite a bit of free time. I have one simple question for you guys: Should I go for it?

So Readers Digest has this contest where you show your "spirit" for your town (or a town) in order for the town to win money towards an improvement. The town my dad grew up in and my aunt and uncle still live is currently in second place in the "population under 99,000" category, and are trying to win $40,000 towards making the town library handicap accessible. In addition, all individuals are entered into a contest to win $35,000 towards a car and roadtrip across America. Feel free to vote for your own town/city, but if you don't care and just want to have the chance to win a car and trip, please vote here: http://wehearyouamerica.readersdigest.com/town.jsp?town=FAIRB…

Okay, not really mine per say and I'm just a user along with the rest of the department, but starting in May I'll be able to drive this rig on my own: It's a 2008 Ford F-350 Super Duty Crew Cab/utility body that serves as the Traffic Unit/Fire Police vehicle for my local Emergency Services department. Last May I joined the department and by the end of the year was earmarked for fire police. I attended the required course in March, passed and now can serve with the department in that capacity. I have submitted a copy of my driving record last month and it should be official that I can drive the traffic unit truck on calls starting in May. The picture was taken las…

Hey guys. Not only did I attend the Fall AACA show in Hershey on Saturday, I also attended a small car show in Windsor, NJ on Sunday. I took some pictures and have them in a Photobucket album: Link Of particular interest, there were two cars I took pictures of that are for sale: the 1955 Oldsmobile 88 (Red & White two-tone) and the Black & Silver 1978 Riviera Anniversary model. If anyone is interested, I did get phone #'s. The Olds really is nice (window sign stated $19,500); the Buick was equally as nice, is low milage and kept in a garage (I believe the owner is asking just under $9,000). Let me know if you want the phone #'s.

Wanted to get out of the house as it's been a boring weekend. Drove south a few miles toward Conestoga, PA, and sawr a sign for "Shenk's Mill Wildflower Preserve". Not really familiar with the area even though it's like 6 miles south of my house. Suddenly, the blacktop ended and the road turned to gravel with some decent washouts and steep down- and uphill approach and departures. I turned around at a railroad track and took a different route. It was like I dropped off the face of the earth. I lowered the window to listen for the sound of banjos... Little Patriot pulled through well. I got a little mud on 'im. It turned out to be a fun excursion.

Every once in a while, fleeting mentions of golf and golfing come up on the site. Yes, I see how it would nice be to walk scenic manicured courses as you go out to a golf outing. But that's where it stops. I've never really had an opinion of golf (other than indifference), but that's changing. Sorry if I seem blunt, but the whole experience and the accoutrements that go with it seem so "packaged." I wonder if people REALLY like it, or if it's something they do to be "one of the boys." I mean, it offers little in the way of exercise value. The reason I bring this up is that about 5 months ago, I got a new boss. In the last week or so, it crystallized that he is …

The Truth About Cars TWAT Awards 10. Chevrolet Aveo “Chevy likes to tout the Aveo as the “lowest-priced [new] car in America” and in spite of their warning “content may vary,” it’s easy to see how they achieved that goal. From the hollow-sounding doors, bargain-basement plastics and skinny tires to the coarse-sounding engine that strains when faced with even the slightest incline, it exudes “cheap” from every ounce of its being. The Aveo also refutes the smart shopper’s mantra “you get what you pay for.” In the case of this captive Korean import, you pay little and get even less.“ 9. Lincoln Mark LT “Lincoln’s badge engineered Ford F-150 is an unholy degradation of t…

In modern car design, function follows form. Case in point: the modern-day decklid. For the greatest contrast, you might refer to a mid-60's car such as this 1966 Cadillac: Then take a look at this current generation STS: Now, I'm not saying we should go back to the humongous trunks of the 60s. But consider that my dad's friend owns a previous-generation Impala, with a huge trunk. He had purchased a lawnmower, and he wanted to load it into the trunk. He couldn't. Not because the trunk was too small, no. But the trunk opening was too small. And that's just upsetting. There have been numerous times where I have tried to load something into the Cobalt's huge-f…

Say you're out somewhere. There's this attractive person that you notice, and they seem to notice you. And you end up looking over at each other waaay too many times. The grocery store is a bad place for this to happen, because you get to the end of the aisle, turn to go down the next... and there they are. What makes it even more complicated is, they, or you, are with someone. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Here's the video that accounts my time spent in the Audi R8, back in July. It works best if you click "play", then "pause" and let it load completely before viewing. Cory/R8 by Mark Dowdell To check in, I've been busy lately, so my actual R8 pics aren't quite finished. They shouldn't be much longer, though. I'm just too indecisive when it comes to sorting out the photos to pick out the best and bring it down to a decent sized set. Multiple pics of a single scene will do that. After that, I have my Cook Forest State Park pics to start on, hopefully before the leaves hit their peak this Fall. I need to get out and make sure I get lots of fall pictures.

I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing 'fairly well' for my age. (I just turned 65.) A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, 'Do you think I'll live to be 80?' He asked, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer or wine?' 'Oh no,' I replied.. 'I'm not doing drugs, either!' Then he asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs? 'I said, 'Not much... My former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!' 'Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?' 'No, I don't,' I said. He asked, 'Do you gamble, drive fast car…

Why going green won't make you better or save you money Washington Post Like most Whole Foods shoppers, David Bain thinks he is a decent citizen of Earth. His family buys mostly organic food. They recycle. He recently fortified his green credentials by removing a leaking oil tank in his yard. But here's a head scratcher: Though the Bains live in Arlington within walking distance of Whole Foods [CSpec plug: this is where I live!], they often drive there in an SUV that gets just 19 miles per gallon. He has noticed that his SUV is not alone in the lot. Does that make Bain a hypocrite? He paused before responding: "I could see how people would come to that conclusion, but…

OK, there's an awesome new vehicle that you've just gotta have, but there's one problem. The color you've seen (and love) on other cars isn't available on your model... bah. Name your vehicle and the color you wish it came in. For example, I'd love to see a Colorado shortbed regular cab ZQ8 in monochrome Laser Blue with Ebony leather and machined or polished factory rims, and a Colorado Z71 4X4 in that cool new pearl brown color that's on the LaCrosse and '06 Impala and Monte with tan interior, body color flares, and machined finished factory rims. I'd also like to see a nice pale yellow return, like the beautiful Butternut Ye…

In the first of a new series of Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May head for the Isle of Man to decide which is best: the new baby Aston Martin - the V8 Vantage, BMW M6 or Porsche 911 Carrera S; car cultures clash when the Austin Healey Sprite takes on a Peugeot 307 in a hill climb challenge and a supercar - the Ascari AKZ1 takes to the track. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4...9421&q=top+gear *Broadband might help you out.

I'm a big fan of the 2000 -to- 2005 Impala. Pretty much the only flaw they have is that they have transverse mounted motors and are FWD. As far as sefety, quality & power economy and smoothness of the Impala it is all fantastic. Once they changed the burgundy tail light surround to black in '03 I pretty much thought the car looked almost PERFECT, even looks like it has a RWD stance. Is it just my obsession for RWD, am I just seeing things? THis car has always looked like it has a RWD stance to me. Am I crazy? Look at that healthy rear overhang...

Happened across this earlier... http://www.classicresto.com/mambo/content/view/96/43/ Basically, its not finished, but its step-by-step restoration of a '86 Grand Prix 2+2... except they are modifying the car to have an Escalade drivetrain (6L80!), GTO seats and to make the rear window part of a hatchback. Very cool... will be nice to see the finished result.

Ok, I'm trying to find a thread, but I forgot what it was totally about, etc. BUT... It does have a picture of a flying Oldsmobile Silhouette! I think one of Flybrian's creations. Anyone able to steer me toward it?

http://www.archive.org/web/web.php It's pretty cool this Website allows you to type in a URL and visit websites from previous years like say April 14 2006 http://web.archive.org/web/20060414122910/http://www.cheersandgears.com/forums/index.php? Though there are some missing links and such, it was interesting going through things that people were saying about cars we have now before they were out

I just got done doing a mileage conversion for the Opel Zafira. The one sold in Mexico gets approx 32 mpg. The others sold throughout the world with the 1.8 4-cyl get 37 to 38 mpg with 140 hp on tap. The diesel versions get over 45 mpg! We would save over $170 per month in gas by owing a Zafira over the Suburban. Yeah, it's not as big, but with the money saved I could pay for the roof carrier, and get a decent hotel when we travel. Heck, a trip to LA in a Zafira compared to our Suburban would save us over $300!! Even with the bigger engine. GM I WANT A ZAFIRA NOW. Please get your act together and bring us the good stuff. Anyone know how hard it is to get a veh…

Just wanted to get a grip on who all is going to be here on Saturady to see Fly off on his journey. I don't know what we are going to be doing (after wasting a few hours checking out cars and talking cars). Going to have dinner somewhere has been suggested, which might be the best idea because it is going to be very hot and humid here according to the forecast. Anyway, I wanted to warn the neighbors (I live on a shared driveway) about the cars that will be showing up, so please confirm that you are coming in this thread. Should be a good time.

Is there any of you here? I'm looking to get a keyboard. Some guys play drums, some guys play guitar... Me, I want to play piano. Always wanted to, but lately this feeling has been increased for some unknown reason. I figure, being that time of year, it'd make a nice gift for myself. I just wondering what I should look for. There are many of them out there and I have no idea what ones are good, bad, complex, or simple. I'd say the maximum price for one would be $200. Any suggestions, if anyone here actually knows any more than I do?

In this edition of dream car garage, you are the vehicle coordinator for a major Hollywood studio. They will be filming a mainstream movie similar to Friday Night Lights or Hoosiers (the Indiana basketball movie from the 1980's). The movie will be set in a fictional High School in the Los Angeles area which has a wide variety of races, income levels, and social problems. The movie will be set in late 2016-early 2017. You are being asked to provide 6 things here....5 vehicles, one vehicle color. Vehicles will be needed for the following 5 characters; Hank-African American, successful, 48, the father of students on the team.....he works as a booster and freq…

My parents bought a brand new 1983 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ new; I was 8 y-o at the time. I essentially grew up with this car, and learned how to drive on it. May of 1993 my mom traded it in and it was gone forever (I did see it on two separate occasions in 1994). Ever since then, I've had a special place in my heart for these unloved GPs, and vowed one day to own one (even though it was never really mine, I treated it like it was my own before I bought my first car, a '78 Camaro LT, in 1992). Over the years I'd spot one for sale or just sitting alone, but all have needed work. Last Sunday I was out cruising around looking at dealer inventories and I spotted this: …

Beyond the Camaro and the Volt, there seems to be very little to be excited about in the future anymore regarding GM. When you sit down and look at all of the facts and rumors, well, it does look quite depressing over at GM. The Insignia will not be coming to North America unchanged from its Opel form (even though it has been stated that Saturn and Opel will become one and the same); the Beat will not be coming to North America either, only the Trax, despite the concept's popularity here; there has been no back-up plan for Zeta; the W-Body Impala and Cobalt will live on past the end of the decade; Alpha has been delayed six months; future product plans for Pontiac are b…
