  1. Holden rear-drive architecture put on a diet for next generation of GM cars By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS 21 May 2009 http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/... HOLDEN is developing a lighter and more highly-evolved version of its three-year old Zeta rear-wheel-drive architecture that underpins several GM models including Commodore, Statesman and Chevrolet Camaro. The company says cutting weight from Zeta is one of the biggest goals for the Port Melbourne engineers, as General Motors tries to keep the platform competitive for a number of years. Holden’s engineers are working towards refining Zeta for possible new applications in GM’s future mid and large-car programs. Whethe…

The three-door OPC takes the body of the new Astra GTC and adds some new bits to give it a more aggressive look. A new front bumper, diffuser-esque rear, twin tailpipes, and a black-tipped spoiler. Twenty inch wheels hiding a big set of Brembo brakes complete the look. Under the hood is a 2.0L direct-injected and turbocharged four-cylinder producing 280 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. Power goes through a six speed manual to the front wheels. To help counter torque and understeerp, the Astra OPC is fitted with GM's HiPerStrut front suspension and a mechanical …

  6. Back in September, we reported that GM and BMW were in talks about an alliance. The possible alliance would have General Motors looking at BMW's lineup of gas and diesel engines, while BMW is looking at the Voltec powertrain. Now, a report from German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche says there could be more to this alliance. Wirtschaftswoche reports the two are in talks about jointly developing fuel cell technology for vehicles. The plan would allow BMW to access GM's fuel cell tech. In return, BMW would help pay research costs. When asked about this, a BMW spokesman said, "We are speaking to GM about various future technologies but we are not saying anything more b…

But he declined to give earnings guidance, saying there are too many outstanding issues facing the struggling automaker. Wagoner also refused to speculate on whether the board of the world's biggest automaker will consider cutting dividends to shareholders. Earlier this week, Jerome York, an aide to billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, said GM should consider halving its annual $2 per share dividend, which he estimated would save $566 million a year. 62. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 5, 2013 October was a very good month for GM's pickup lineup. With the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra in the mix, GM was able to move 59,163 trucks this past month. Still that wasn't quite enough to beat the Ford F-Series which sold 63,803 units in the same timeframe. Part of the reason is that Ford has been laying on the incentives as a way to keep sales up. But Kurt McNeil, GM’s chief sales analyst tells Wards Auto there is another reason at play. “We are still over-weighted toward crew-cab and V-8 trucks. Our light-duty (pickup) mix will moderate over time as our launch progresses,” said McNeil. GM d…

Really, we need to ask this question -- why should GM obey the polticians' views and comply with CAFE standards? (1) GM and other car manufacturers should decide -- first and foremost -- what kind of cars they build by what the market demands. CAFE is not a ban, CAFE is a penalty law for not falling in line with the opinions of the political leadership. (2) What CAFE say is [if the average fuel economy of a manufacturer's annual fleet of car and/or truck production falls below the defined standard, the manufacturer must pay a penalty, currently $5.50 USD per 0.1 mpg under the standard, multiplied by the manufacturer's total production for the U.S. domestic market]. After an unusually short meeting lasting about 80 minutes, the board did not follow the suggestion that billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian first aired publicly last week that GM directors form a committee to study the benefits of a three-way alliance. 68. Two weeks ago, General Motors announced a massive recall that involves 778,562 Chevrolet Cobalts built between 2005 to 2007 and Pontiac G5s built in 2007 because of a faulty ignition switch that slip out of the run position if jostled or if any weight was applied to the key in the cylinder. Now this problem has caused 22 accidents and claimed the lives of six people since the air bags didn't deploy since the key was turned away from the run position. Now a GM spokesman pointed out at the time that the lack of air bags weren't the only factor in these fatalities; high speed, alcohol, not wearing a seat belt, and going off the road played a role in the six different fatalit…

  70. WASHINGTON - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says the Democrats’ plan to tap the Wall Street rescue fund to save U.S. automakers doesn’t have the votes to pass. One day after Detroit’s Big Three sent survival plans to Capitol Hill in an urgent plea for $34 billion in government aid, Reid said there’s still not enough support in Congress for using some of the $700 billion bailout to help the teetering carmakers. He told The Associated Press in an interview, “I just don’t think we have the votes to do that now.” The Bush administration and auto-state Republicans and Democrats are pushing instead to take a $25 billion program to help the carmakers produce green vehic…
