..As to why the elderly drive so slowly. It's not because they want to be safe. It's not because their reactions are slower. It's not even because they may be a bit senile. It's the fact they're cheap and want to save every penny they can on gas without having to downgrade into a compact. Driving this Cutlass, this is what I've come up with. Seriously, it has to be true. They generally still drive large boats that chug fuel like no tomorrow. These Cutlasses are known for being own by little old ladies. Not only did we buy it off of one, I passed one the other day that looked to be 80 in a Cutlass similar to mine, but in 'elderly ecstatic' light blue. In their infinite wis…

My dad and a friend of his could yank an engine, tear it down, reassemble and throw it back in the car in no time. Eventually having kids caught up and my dad hasn't owned one in years. Cut to 2007. I spent insane amounts of time looking for a "kayak car" that I would be cheap, reliable and I could use for a handful of mile per year at least, ideally it would be reliable enough to let me unload my Fusion. After having a few things fall through (still pissed about the '87 Caprice wagon" I put my search off until spring 2008. Cut to yesterday. During a casual conversation, I learn …

Most of today's cars are very computerized, full of gadgets and like all things high tech they become obsolete in just few years (for example cars only 5-6 years old lack Bluetooth, have screens that look like cheap kids toys, etc). Today's cars have better screens, more high tech toys but in 5-6 years they will be obsolete as well. Lets say you want to get a car you would like to keep for a very long time, lets say at least 15-20 years. Something like Mustang, Camaro, Challenger or Corvette, something that you can have in addition to your daily driver, a weekend car for your soul and fun, something that you will keep very long time. The wife anad I are currently reviewing our financial status and trying to decide what is the amount we are comfortable paying per month for a new vehicle when the Envoy lease expires soon (August). Of course small and cheap would be best (a loan amount not exceeding $20K), but there isn't much out there she likes at that loan amount (she really wants a 2008 Enclave, CTS, S40/V50, or a VUE, just so you know). We don't have a large enough down payment, so even looking at a $23-$24K MSRP would be stretching it. She's not fond of the Malibu ( ), so don't suggest that, and we already are leasing an AURA, so that's out of the question. Anyway, as we were talking yester…

Here’s the fourth annual list of the best and worst of GM and C&G during the past year. If the year could be summed up in one word, it’s “disaster.” There were plenty of natural disasters, most notable being Katrina, and GM had its own disasters to wade through. Prominent passings included Johnny Carson, Rosa Parks, and the only Pope that many people knew. News regarding GM came at a steady drip—of bad news, including the Fiat fiasco, pension and health care woes, the Delphi mess, falling market share, junk bond status, and record low stock prices. C&G experienced its own woes with glitches the first seven months of the year, and then the site went offline al…

So it appears that my sister could trade in her Alero and get a Cruze LS for about $50 a month. ($900 down, $159 a month for 39 months = $7100). Haggle that $100 off, take off $3500 in GM credits and $1500 or so in trade (that's on the low side) and you're at $2000 for 39 months = $51 a month. However, I don't know what the residual value or money factor (interest rate/2400) are on the Cruze LT leases, which is obviously more desirable. Similarly, for a base Regal (agreed upon selling price of MSRP, $27k) can be had for $249 a month for 39 months, $2000 down. I found a $28.8k model (adds heated seats, sunroof, dual power seats, some other stuff) for $25.5k, so not knowi…

I know Des Moines and Omaha are both experiencing a huge housing boom downtown with new lofts and condos going up everywhere. Old inner city 'burbs like Windsor Heights are also getting built up. Some people are also saying this will be the reverse white flight...gentrification will cause real estate to skyrocket in downtown and inner city areas, forcing poorer people out. I don't think the cost of a crate of live chicken has gone up any. The King is greedy and just wants to take advantage of the fright from bird flu. I'm going to have to switch fast-food restaurants. BK's tasty chicken fries turn me into a chicken guzzler. If I switch to Mcdonald's, which are much less tasty, I'll ween myself off chicken and eventually become a vegetarian. It's the trend of the future. We need to save all of our chicken before bird flu makes them extinct. Think of the food chain.

About 1 year ago, I had an Americanized Hispanic guy start chatting me up at a Starbucks about 2 miles from my place. About the fifth question is what do you do and where? I tell him I don't disclose that and since his "sequence" and "approach" is so familiar and proceeded to go off on him. He hadn't EVEN ordered a drink! 77. Nissan/Renault Alliance: GM Outgoing, FMC Incoming At least, it looks that way: Carlos Ghosn's Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. may start talks with Ford Motor Co. as prospects fade for a link with General Motors Corp., two people with knowledge of the discussions said. Executives from the Renault-Nissan team and Ford have been in touch in the past month about exploring a possible link, according to the people, who asked not to be named because the proceedings are private. William Clay Ford Jr. initially called Ghosn in July to discuss a partnership if the GM-Ghosn talks led nowhere, three people familiar with the matter said last month. Read "Ford, Ghosn May Talk …

August and Frederik Duesenberg, 1920s (article by the Des Moines Register) Two of the world's finest car builders got their start in Iowa. Cars adorned with the Duesenberg name were known for speed, style and luxury. Frederick Duesenberg was born in Germany in 1876, and August Duesenberg was born there in 1878. They arrived in the United States in 1885. Their widowed mother emigrated with them and four of their siblings. An older brother had already arrived and welcomed his family to a farm at Rockford. By the late 1890s, the brothers were skilled mechanics, operating bicycle-and-motorcycle shops, Fred in Rockford and "Augie" in Garner. They moved to Des Moines about…

I told them that quite a few of the Kappa cars have been involved in accidents over the last two years and many were able to be repaired, although others met their unfortunate fate too early. The link above is from the skyroadster.com fourm; while the first page goes back to January of this year, there are some collages of accident pictures. Yup, picked up another one a couple weeks back. '86 V-6 4-sp manual. The motor and tranny had been all rebuilt, but it had a miss in the motor. I went back a week later, took my chances and brought it home. Ended up just being bad wires. It runs good at speed but doesn't idle good right now, the guy put a new timing chain on and I'm fairly sure it's off a tooth. So I may have to dig into that. Other than that I ended up putting on new shocks/struts, new brake pads, new caliper and rebuilt the other 3, turned all rotors, painted the ground effects silver, new tires with matching wheels and detailed it up a bit. Got $1500 into it with all the new parts. Bought it as a dail…

Hi there, it's your favorite staff writer! Okay, maybe I am embellishing this a bit. It has been about six months since I have announced that I would stepping away from my full-time role as a staff writer for a job with JATO Dynamics as a specs researcher. This past week marked six months at the new job and I thought it would be a good time to give an update of where I stand. To start, the new job has been working out very well. Most of my work deals with taking data from automakers on various vehicles and putting into our systems. That may seem tedious (and there makes and model where it is that), but I am oddly enjoying. I think a lot of comes from figuring o…

I'm inquiring about two 2009 GM-issued calendars that dealers receive (or buy?) and distribute to their customers: 2009 GM Muscle Cars 2009 GM Classic Cars & Trucks I've tried a bunch of my local dealers to see if they had either calendar to give me with no luck (one dealer said that "GM stopped doing them over a decade ago" ). Do any of our dealership personnel here have access to these calendars? I'd definitely like to get one of each, if possible, and I'm willing to reimburse the cost of shipping. Thanks in advance!!

Warm enough to wear shorts but cool enough to not break a sweat when doing activities outside. It really is a breath of fresh air after this past week of gray and rain, and after last night's events. I took the opportunity to put my stereo back in the car, finish cleaning the front passenger seat, and cleaning the engine bay a bit. Crap battery be damned, I jumped my car and went for a 37 mile drive on the quiet winding back roads with the window open and the stereo on. My goodness, these seats are amazingly comfortable. I never appreciated a…
