For me at least, Cheers and Gears has always been a reader/user-oriented site, a place where everyone is involved in someway. So, since I know I'm taking my affinity for automotive journalism as something that could become a loving, paying career someday in the near future, I'd like to know how much automotive journalism matters to one person: you. What you would like to see different? What do you like about what automotive journalists are currently up to? Personally, I think automotive journalism has its place and I can think of ways it can evolve and progress, but this isn't about what I think. This is about what you think. As for why I decided to open this topic up f…

My thread about letting your kid practice motor sports seems to be a success, and most people there say they would let or even encourage their kid/s to get involved into such an activity, so the next question is... how much does it cost to give a kid a shot at some of the cheaper options, like go - karting? How often do those things break down anyway?

Hmmmmm, I got pulled over today. I was behind some old 1995 or so Jeep Cherokee going 40 mph in a 55 mph zone. So I decide to pull around him since it was a 4 lane highway. I blow by him in my Grand Prix going about 65, as I get ahead of him I hear a siren, I think, what an A$$hole trying to pretend he's a cop. So in my mind I think, hmmmm let me show you what I can do. I step on the gas and in a second I'm up to 90 mph. I hear that siren again and I think won't that AHole give it up. I look in my rearview and I see he has the hidden police lights in the grille on. I think, ain't this a b*tch, so I pull over. The cop that was driving the Jeep is in full uniform, his partn…

Seeing my older 4 Monte Carlos literally covered in dust, and sadly STILL not "on the road" for 2007, made me realize I don't have a lot more weekends to really give them a cleaning. Heck, last year, I only washed the older 4 MCs (all 4 on one Saturday) ... didn't even wax 'em. Since that isn't the "norm" for me, I hope to change that this year...we'll see. I managed to get the '87 MC LS waxed 3 times, though, last year. So far, I've cleaned and waxed the '87 MC LS once this year. Normally, I wash, wax and clean the interior of the older 4 MCs once a year. I just dust them off every so often during the rest of the time that they are out ... unless they get caught in…

http://tags.jalopnik.com/5121491/how-old-i...in-people-years Take the mileage on the car's odometer and divide by the model year. The result is your car's age if it were a person. So for our cars: Prizm---- 188000 miles and it is a 1994 so my car is 94 years old. Intrepid--- 196000 miles and it is a 2000 so it is 98 years old. Shadow--- 217000 miles and it is a 1989 so it is 109 years old! Marquis--- 189000 miles on it and it is a 1993 so it is 95 years old. How old is YOUR car (in people years)?

Today my friend and I (the one with the Corolla) were getting out of clas to go to somewhere in Mass to take pictures for my photography class. We got in my the car (I had the Intrepid today) and I started it up. I went behind the seat to get my camera out. Apparently he either forgot I started it or didn't think I turned the key al; the way because he asked Him: "Is the car on?" Me: "yeah" I put it in reverse back out Him: "Wow, it's really quiet" Seems every time we go for a ride in it he's more impressed with the car. So how quiet (GTOs and other loud V8s/purposely loud vehicles need not apply ) or how refined is your vehicle's engine? Like I've said before…

http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Consumer...=Malibu&src=vip As you can see via the link, this shows a "CR snapshot" of the '06 Chev. Malibu. See how many errors you can spot on the page. MSN hosts the connection (and I'm sure pays a fee to make the CR data available to them). It's simply pathetic beyond belief. After seeing this mismatch of data, how much would you trust the rest of what CR compiles?

One of my all-time favorite cars happens to be the 1957 Oldsmobiles... and at the top of that list is the Olds Fiesta 88 station wagon. While cruising eBay, I found this: See more pics and info at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/57-Olds-88-...1QQcmdZViewItem Not that I have the money, nor experience, space, skills or tools, to buy and restore back to showroom condition this car, but I'm wondering if something like this is even worth somebody's time & effort? Anyone with experience care to educate me?

Your car, I mean. Don't call the cops on me for child abuse I mean, back in the days with my Cavalier, I noticed the rougher I drive it, the better it runs. At one point, I pamper it all the time, and it constantly gives me random problems. Specifically, I had this intermittent starting problem which the dealer couldn't diagnose. But then I started driving it rough, hard accelerations, quick starts with no warmups, almost to the point that I'm doing donuts with it. But it ran much better and problem-free. But now, since I have the G6, I have mixed feelings. I don't want to rough it up, since it's still fresh off the lot, but I'm afraid I might run into the "problems"…

Today on my lunch break I headed out to Wawa (a local convenience store chain) to get a bit of food. I have to pass the Toyota dealer, among others, on the route. They had three Tundras sitting out on the grass along the road. On the way back, I pulled onto the lot, jumped out, and walked around one. In two seconds, a cheery young saleslady appeared and held out her hand. I shook it and we introduced ourselves. "So, is this the first time you've seen the new Tundras?" "Yes." "Cool!" "Not really." "What?" "That thing is ugly!" (look of shock, but she regained her composure quickly) "That's the ugliest truck on the market." "Well, that's one opinion." And w…

Barnes&Noble always has a busy parking lot. So yesterday I found a spot and went in to browse. When I came out to leave, I put the truck in Drive and was about to let my foot off the brake when this woman in an Accord driving one-handed with a cell phone in her ear whips in front of me, and parks in the hash lines, which of course is not a legal parking spot. She sees me and continues to gab on the phone while sipping a beverage out of a paper cup. I glare, she looks at me, and ignores me. I blow the horn and mouth out to her while motioning "That is not a parking spot!" She gives me a quizzical look like "Wha?" So I blow the horn some more because I want to le…

So, it is with great concern that I must address this issue publicly. An automaker, who should know better, has a vehicle that is beginning to develop rust bubbles at just three years of age. This automaker is Ford and the vehicle in question is Josh's 2013 Escape. Is it just me or is that not a decade too soon for this sort of thing? As for background, the vehicle has obviously lived in the salt-ridden world of Pennsylvania for the majority of its life–as have each and every one of our other vehicles over the years. It should also be stated that, in his ownership, its been washed at least bi-weekly. He takes better care of his vehicles than I do, he's excessively OC…

Here in Ohio, pretty stupid actually. My wife works for a local College, and a girl and her mother were recently complaining bitterly about the girls financial aid. Seems that they were very upset about being charged the CHEAPER in state tuition rate... My wife pointed out that they were from Cleveland...and they wanted to argue that wasn't really part of Ohio. Same girl had flunked bio Chemistry 4 times, and they girl and her mom were indignant that the girls chances of getting into med school were going down the drain. How to feed the world: Brazil's agricultural miracle Economist THE world is planting a vigorous new crop: “agro-pessimism”, or fear that mankind will not be able to feed itself except by wrecking the environment. The current harvest of this variety of whine will be a bumper one. Natural disasters—fire in Russia and flood in Pakistan, which are the world’s fifth- and eighth-largest wheat producers respectively—have added a Biblical colouring to an unfolding fear of famine. By 2050 world grain output will have to rise by half and meat production must double to meet demand. And that cannot easily happen because growth in grain yields is flattening out, there is little extr…

I would like to first say that it is not GM's fault that Buicks' sales are down. How do yoou exepect to sell 2 cars and a suv. In the meantime Chevy has 8 cars. Not only that but Buick has niche vehicle yet chevy has the camaro and the corvette. This reminds of Cinderella chevy goes out to the ball and has fun while buick is left to whiter away. Buick can be a great car company again if the stupid bean counters would stop this insane give everything to chevy and then rebadge buick. Buick need its distinct styling not just a new grill and trail lights and some changes to the interior. My last comment on this is for the people who are running GM should be removed and …

So, I just had a thought pop into my mind: Imagine the future of the V8 as this: 4.0L, twin-turbo, SIDI, 500+HP. How, you ask? Stick two 2.0L SIDI Ecotecs together and that's what you have. I don't know if that would work, but it seems plausible enough. It would deliver pretty good fuel mileage as well, I think. Image the other possibilities, too. The same HP/L (130 is what the 2.0 gets, but lets use 125) out of a 3.0L would yield 375 screaming ponies. A 3.5L would make 435HP... and so on... I think you can do the math easily enough. With forced induction being the wave of the future, IMO, I think we could see "big" V6s drop down to the 2.8-3.2L range from the curr…

This may or may not get printed over on that site, so I pasted it here to at least discuss. While I have stated for a long time what Dr. Bud [E. Bryan's Roadkill column] is saying about NASCAR going back to production-based cars, just wanted to tweak the suggestions a little, give it some direction. NASCAR is about bread-and-butter cars. Pony cars aren't bread and butter, leave those to IROC and Trans Am. While standards like the Charger and Impala would be good for this new-look NASCAR, racing is supposed to improve the breed, and the breed that needs improvement is the boring "Camcord"-dominated world of mid-size cars. So here's what should be done. -Go with ho…

empowah made a comment about Chevyguy2001's spotless interior, and that reminded me of how I have to make sure the used cars' interiors are basically spotless too, and I thought some people might like to know how to remove scuff marks. If you have scuff marks from hitting the door with your feet (or from anything anywhere) and it won't come off with normal soap and water, simply take a rag, apply a little bit of paint thinner to a small part of it, and rub on the scuff mark. It should come off after just a little bit of rubbing. When you are rubbing, make sure you don't rub too hard or for a very long amount of time or it may take the paint off the door panel or area yo…

Reading ocnblu's thread about a new car, this just popped into my mind so I thought I'd make a new topic about it for everyone to see. Essentially it is a loophole in the GM Card system and allows anyone to use another person's points. My parents have two cards, and my sister used one card's points on her Cruze and I used the other points on the Camaro. However, prior to the day we each bought our respective car, neither of us were on the card and thus couldn't use the points. However, we got added to the card and were able to use the points without our parents having to co-sign on the loans. Basically you simply call the GM card, tell them you are adding someone to the…

Who knows where this topic may go, but let's play with it anyway.... When it came to cars and how I looked at them, these were the following weird thoughts that came to mind: -Until at least 88, I didn't understand that new cars replaced older versions of the same nameplate. I basically figured all these different looks of cars were still being built alongside one another. For instance: The Nissan Hardbody came out in 1986. I thought it was a bigger truck, or some truck made of different metal or something. I figured the older version was still available new at the dealer and that you still had a choice. I also thought the first-gen F-body was the "co…

If Autonews' new future product predictions for GM are any indication, GM is going down the tubes in terms of desirable and unique products. Pontiac's going to sell rebadged Chevys, Saturn is getting products delayed or cut right and left, Cadillac and Buick are never going to turn their images around because they're going to keep old, uncompetitive cars around until they can't pay people to take them, and Chevy gets globalized and attempts to keep afloat by selling cars, not SUVs. Anyways, here is what I would do, knowing that it appears GM doesn't want to cut brands but rather just costs associated with them (see Pontiac being rebadged Chevy's). I'm trying to reduce o…

Ok, so I'm bored and thought this would be a fun thread. If you haven't figured it out already, in this thread you are to post the mods you would do to your car if you had the money. I'm going to do what I would do for $5k and then for $10k, I suppose you can do whatever you want, but it would be more fun if you put a couple price limits on your mods, IMO. All right, I threw this idea at Fly this morning as to whether or not there should be a "how-to" sub-forum in the Tech Section thread for all of us who do our own repair work, or those of us that would like to get started, but are unsure of what to do. Its just an idea, but I'd like to get some real feedback on this one because I would love to be able to post repair proceedures and pictures and stuff like that so's I can help out my fellow C&G'ers when it comes to repairs and in general fixin' stuff.

...the automotive world? Personally, I got started at an early age. Due to my heart issues, I was never very active so I turned to what I could do ... play with my model cars. As I grew older, the love affair with the Monte Carlo started when Mom and Dad bought their '76 MC...and continued from there: http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/mcstory.html So...how about you? I got a chance to ride around in a Lucerne the other day, and that thing is unreasonably big. I mean seriously, three fat Minnesotans could have hot sweaty sex in back and the driver would never know. Its insane. I'm pretty sure that my son would get lost in the back seat. I'll stick to reasonably sized cars.

At 1000 RPM, your engine is REVOLVING at 16.67 times per second. At 3000 RPM, we're looking at three times that, or 50 times per second. At 7000 RPM, we're speaking of 116.67 times per second. And those high-revving 12,000 RPM engines hit a completely outrageous 200 revolutions per second! Am I effing insane? Are these numbers completely off? I'm going crazy looking at these numbers. How the hell is that possible?! If you take into account that these engines are four-stroke, does that mean they're actually doing four times more rotations than they are revolutions? Or less?

Huge ice island could threaten shipping lanes Another Titanic? Scientists scramble to plot path of massive chunk that broke off Greenland STOCKHOLM — An island of ice more than four times the size of Manhattan is drifting across the Arctic Ocean after breaking off from a glacier in Greenland. Potentially in the path of this unstoppable giant are oil platforms and shipping lanes — and any collision could do untold damage. In a worst-case scenario, large chunks could reach the heavily trafficked waters where another Greenland iceberg sank the Titanic in 1912. It's been a summer of near biblical climatic havoc across the planet, with wildfires, heat and smog in Russia …

Hulk's son, passenger are injured The wrestler's son, 17, is driving when the car crashes into a tree. By ELENA LESLEY, Times Staff Writer Published August 27, 2007 CLEARWATER - Professional wrestling star Hulk Hogan's son and another young man were seriously injured in a car crash Sunday evening in Clearwater. Driver Nick Bollea, 17, also known as Nick Hogan, and a passenger had to be extracted from the crumpled Toyota Celica Supra. Officials said both were taken by air to Bayfront Medical Center, where the passenger was reported in critical condition. Family members gathered at the hospital late Sunday, but reporters were kept at a distance. Nick Bollea's inj…

A bit of a rant, but these things happened over the last few weeks and I can't get over how dumb all 5 are. #1. My Buddy Steve runs a body shop, did the body work on my 71 Chevelle and my 55 Chevy and also has fixed my other cars, including the Safari van when it got hit by a truck. Steve took a BMW Salvage title rebuild down to the Ohio State highway patrol to get it checked out so he could sell it. He noticed a very nice 65 Corvette Convertible (red, restored) being hauled away with the impounds to a company that crushes cars. He asked them what they were doing with the Vette...and was told that they were crushing it for reasons they couldn't discuss. Why in…

Friday evening after work, I stopped in at a new local diner to have supper. It had been a long time since lunch, and I was feeling pretty hungry. As I was waiting for my food, I caught myself staring at my server as she took care of her other tables. I realized my eyes were locked on her every move as the minutes ticked by, my table and my stomach empty. When she assured me "yours will be out soon!" with a little knowing smile, I became amused at myself and realized I probably had a half-crazed, desperate, "FEED ME!" look in my eyes, a look this waitress had probably felt dozens of times before.

While on my trip to Ohio for fireworks yesterday, i saw this odd looking SUV. I first saw it about a mile south of the Tech Center, but this was as close as i could get to it, on the on ramp to 696. At first i thought it was a Jeep Commander, but on the sides it had the Hummer name. On the back, the names and logos were covered with black tape. I dont know what it was, but it defanitly wasn't a H2 or H3. Does anyone know anything about this?

Link: http://www.kare11.com/news/article/936504/333/Hundreds-of-panties-turn-up-along-Ohio-road Hundreds of panties turn up along Ohio road LANCASTER, Ohio -- Authorities in central Ohio are trying to solve a panties puzzle: why hundreds of pairs of mostly women's underwear were dumped along the side of a road. Fairfield County Deputy Gary Hummel said Thursday the undergarments were found in trees and on hillsides in several spots this week on a road in Berne Township, about 30 miles southeast of Columbus. He says some of the panties were still folded the way they'd come in packaging, while others appeared to have been worn. There were nearly 1,700 pairs in all…

A big "no thanks" for me. I thought it was ok for people who needed it to survive. It has now become a sport. I couldn't imagine felling a large animal...though if a moose was headed my way, I wouldn't think twice about pulling the trigger in self defense (I got real close to one on a Canadian Highway near Banff in 2003). There are some people I work with who do it. They don't seem to do it in the Sierra Nevada or in California. They tend to go to Montana or other more remote states. Not for me. Falling asleep on a warm beach on the Mediterranean: now you're talking.

Well, I'm still alive and doing well. However, I'm writing this from my computer at work as I still have no power or cable at my house. Which totally sucks btw, considering the storm hit September 13th in the wee hours of the morning and I haven't had power since then. My wife and I are living off generator power - with electrical cords all throughout our house. Our beautiful huge cypress tree in the backyard uprooted during the storm and came crashing down on our shed, ripping the main power line running behind our house on 11th Street totally off it's pole, and damaging my service line too. The big news from a car perspective though is that Ike basically killed …

A major American metropolis has been decimated. Water is up to and beyond 20 feet deep in some places, and most of that water won't naturally receed since New Orleans sits seven feet below sea level on a marsh. Lawlessness reigns in many parts of the area with rescuers in boats and helicopters being shot at. Tourists trying to find shelter are being beaten and mugged. Those sheltered in New Orleans' convention center are also being beaten and raped. The police chief of the city said teams of his men have been beaten back. Numbers of National Guardsmen are down because many units are deployed - guess where? - in Iraq and Afghanistan. Good thing they're…

What you've seen on TV and in the papers pales in comparison to what it's really like after Hurricane Sandy hit us. There are thousands of people who have lost everything... houses washed into the sea, entire neighborhoods burned to the ground, loved ones killed and injured. It will take many years to rebuild, in some case never at all. You can see some of the pictures here http://www.wbab.com/gallery/weather/hurricanes/images-hurricane-sandy/g568/#last So we find ourselves hitting every avenue we can to help raise funds and get help for the victims of Hurricane Sandy here on LI. Just an idea, not sure how practical it is. Those of you more technical than me may let me know about details and what you think. Basically I was thinking about the mechanics of a hybrid and how it stores braking energy for later use. This idea does not have to necessarily be connected to a gasoline-run system. Think about a bicycle with a small electric motor integrated either into the bottom bracket (where the cranks attach) or into the rear wheel hub. A battery could be mounted on a rear rack, over the rear tire. The brakes could operate this in reverse to generate power (as in a hybrid car). You could then have some kind of throttle for a little electric boost to …

So Mr. Musk is in the news with announcing yesterday land agreements to start building the Hyperloop in January 2016 with completion in 2018. http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/technology/musks-hyperloop-moves-closer-to-reality/ar-BBhZvZV?ocid=ansCNBC11 My question is will it really change the way we travel? Will it truly get built from border to border or just a magic trick of distracting investors and the news from the poor performance of Tesla? Your Thoughts?
