Typos creep in, of course, but I find there are a few that I do very frequently, because of a particular series of keys that are close to one another, etc. 1- "teh" for "the"- ooh, that one bugs the crap outta me! 3. The Devil Attempts to Mow-Down His Landlord With a Ford Windstar Friday 15th October, 2010 by "black-knight" They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Yeah. In this case, it makes what I'm about to write damn near worthless. Basically the story goes like this: The man you see in the photo above, who may or may not actually be the Devil himself sans the red-scaly skin and bifurcated tail, is Jesse Thornhill (quite ironically, he even has the word "horn" in his last name) of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He had some sort of spat with his landlord which resulted in him storming off of the property which he was renting ... only to return shortly in his '96 Ford Windstar. He …

The two of us goofed around with it for a while but it took her a couple weeks to really get into it and figure out the ins & outs of the high-speed figure-8. I took this photo the other day when I was showing her how to break it down and re-assemble it. Cadillac, Truck, Fish & Puppy are the newest words that she's learned. In that order.

Well, yesterday was an overnight stay for future/prospective students. First, after showing up at 11:00 AM with the parents, we went to little meeting-type set-ups until around 4. Then, we went to a small expo thing where GM had a stand and I filled out a pre-application type thing for their co-op program. I got my key/key card for the dorm/house and moved my suitcase in and stuff; not much, it was only for a night. Then, my parents left and went to the parents' reception at a local Holiday Inn w…

Recently, one of the fog light housings on my Golf failed and let water drown out the bulb, lens, and optics. The result was destructive corrosion that ruined any chance of salvaging the light. So, as anyone clearly would, I set out to tear it all apart and find out what makes the projector lens work in such a superior way over a reflector optics lens more commonly used throughout the auto industry. The answer is quite simple, literally. The eye of the projector lens is just a small domed glass lens held a specified distance from the bulb and optics. A cut-off shield is in place to do what the name suggests; cut off the light from projecting into unwanted directions. …

We already had a thread for the most overrated cars, so I thought we should also have a thread for the very underrated or forgotten cars and companies thoughout history. Personally, its Pierce-Arrow that gets the gold star for the greatest forgotten US automotive treasure. The cars equaled the prestige of Rolls-Royce and Duesenberg and were popular with foreign royalty (the rulers of Japan, Persia, Saudi Arabia and Belgium owned Pierce-Arrows). But, like so many other car companies, it disappeared during the Depression.

In the city, I'm consistently getting between 18 and 20 mpg depending on how often I goose it from a stop. But if I go to fueleconomy.gov, it says my car should be getting 15/22 under the 2008 revisions and 17/24 under the old. It makes me wonder how accurate the revised EPA fuel economy standards are. 32. Boeing just announced another major delay in their launch of the new 787 Dreamliner...a single-story twin-aisle versatile jetliner that replaces the 757/767 combo. These will be able to service LA to Denver....or LA to London. The concept is great. However, they have halted the production of the fuselage for re-design. I am wondering: - is the snag in their all-over-the-map production scheme? - or is it in the revolutionary change to composites? I don't think the first 747 saw this kind of bumbling. Pan Am signed the launch customer agreement in 1966 and its historic flight took place in Feb. 1969. Have you been following the 787 Dreamliner saga?

  62. * With spring weather now (including severe thunderstorm potential the next 24 hours or so here in Chicagoland), hopefully we’re saying good bye to winter 2014-2015 for good… http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/04/08/automotive-daily-80/ …& with that, to what spring-summer-fall events are you looking forward to saying hello in 2015? http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/04/07/daily-dose-trivia-tue-12/ None are on my list, at the moment, at least. I have a few I’d like to attend, but with no income, probably not going to happen. BTW, do you remember any of these 4 ads that pose a challenge? http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/04/07/automotive-daily-79/ …

  63. Save the Earth in Six Hard Questions By Steven Landsburg http://www.slate.com/id/2176156/ Barring a last-minute intervention by the Supreme Court, the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize will be shared by Albert Gore Jr. Admittedly, Gore has been less of a menace to world peace than some previous laureates (think Henry Kissinger). But there is nothing particularly peaceable about Gore's rhetorical approach to climate policy. At his most pugnacious, Gore has depicted the fundamental trade-off as one between environmental responsibility and personal greed. Of course, as everyone over the age of 12 is perfectly aware, the real trade-off is between the quality of our own lives and the …

Do you think working an average of 28 hours a week at minimum wage would be enough to be able to pay off a $3-$5k loan with a clean, blank slate of credit? I'm curious about it since I'm serious about wanting to buy another car, a nice(er) one. Having never dealt with loans or such, I'm not sure what to expect.

  65. So here is the counterpart to our 4.0-Up FI Dream Garage thread. As the title explains, we will use naturally aspirated engines of AT LEAST 5.0 liters of displacement this round. And yes, I know I skipped the 4.something class. That was intentional. Rules- 1)These are your only cars. 2)Production only. 3)Maximum of 5 choices. 4)Any era and market is allowed. 5)Must have N/A engines with 5.0 displacement or greater. Have fun.

Well, I don't know if there is a big golfing community in here or not, but I am looking for a new set before summer. My hand me down set of Taylor Mades that my dad gave to me when I started back in the late 90s are showing their age. I love those clubs, but I lost my 8 iron last summer and the face on my 5 iron is almost worn away. I don't golf a ton, so I am kind of shopping on a budget. I want to stick with a well known name brand, and would like to stick to graphite shafts. Other than that I am open for anything. I wouldn't be opposed to a used set if you thought I could find one in good shape somewhere. Especially if it is going to give me more bang for my bu…

  67. Working on response to the dream car garage that frisky put up, putting up one of my own. In this challenge....it is the Climate controlled trailer, Climate controlled trailer edition-10 cars worth! First list, cars that you would likely find in the shady lanes mobile home park, which is a clean and decent but not fancy mobile home park outside of Kingsport Tennessee. Or cars you would find on a third rate used car lot. Rules; #1. No muscle cars, or Camaros or mustangs of any variation. This includes cars like the 80's Monte Caro SS and clones of those cars-you can't take a mid 80's Buick and build a Grand National clone. No corvettes either. …

  69. So in this edition of dream car garage you have almost no rules other than... No passenger cars... No regular SUV's No regular trucks... Anything else on the planet that is self propelled and can travel across land using wheels or tracks (as in rails like a train or tracked vehicles like tanks and bulldozers) and carry a passenger or driver is eligible. In terms of Trucks...anything commercial or historical or out of the ordinary is allowed. Cabover truck like Balthazar's, Model A stake bed, Unimog, a fire truck, a Divco delivery truck, an armored personnel carrier, a military spec Humvee, a WWII era Jeep, wheeled amphibious landing craft...anythi…

I just realized today that I have been a member of C&G for five years this month. May 2003 was when I first registered, way back on the really old board. I was looking for some information on the Oldsmobile phase out and linked to here, which was still in a fledgling state and probably had only 200-300 members. And what kept me coming back was the Member's Talent area, the Skunkworks designs for the Chevelle, and the professional comprehensive reporting on automotive news. As long as I've been a member, we've had three major board redesigns, two large board failures, we've seen the last Oldsmobile roll off the line, we speculated what the C6 Corvette would look…

But he says it may be necessary, as the "last barrier to climate collapse." Professor Flannery says climate change is happening so quickly that mankind may need to pump sulphur into the atmosphere to survive. Australia's best-known expert on global warming has updated his climate forecast for the world - and it'…

TANGENTS TO SET UP THE STORY --- YOU GUYS KNOW HOW I LIKE TO TELL STORIES TANGENT 1 1) The Focus has had a really rough summer, as have I (worst headf**k I've been through since 2001) Firstly, I was motoring around the house and busted a shifter linkage. Ironically it was in the same place that I was stranded in the middle of the road back in 2005 when the 45 mph 18 wheeler took me out and totalled the first Focus I had. So, I decided that I WOULD NOT be stuck in the road there again and damn near melted the clutch to get the car up a hill. (It was stuck in 3rd). As a result the Focus was down for about a month since I live in Charlotte most of the time and didn't ha…

  78. This has been a larger and older GM sort of weekend. Yesterday, I saw a powder blue Olds Toronado with a white top. That meant it was a '75. It was spotless. I couldn't take a photo. I waved at its driver. He waved back. This morning, I saw a mid 1990s' Olds Ninety Eight Regency of the variety @NINETY EIGHT REGENCY has. I saw it coming up on me in the fast lane on the freeway. I saw that it was silver. When it caught up with me, its interior was burgundy. But I already knew this is my favorite color combo for a vehicle. This was another immaculate GM car. For a split second, with its lack of finning at its rear, it almost resembled a small Lincoln Tow…

From my blog: If the current recession has hit Germany, it doesn’t show. Walking around Cologne there is construction everywhere. New shops going up everywhere. The stores are busy and bustling. Germany has been careful to not outsource it’s labor force to foreign markets as much as we have in the US. If German companies need cheap labor, they set up shop in the former East German territories. This way, at least the GDP stays local to Germany’s economy. Why can’t we do the same thing here? Sure, we couldn’t pay the minimal wages we pay Chinese prison laborers to sew soccer balls with their teeth, but I’m sure there are willing laborers in states like West Virginia, A…

Missing centenarians cause angst in aging Japan Japan prides itself on the world's longest life expectancy but is struggling with a disturbing footnote to that statistic - revelations that hundreds of people listed as its oldest citizens are either long dead or haven't been heard from for decades. The mystery of the missing centenarians has captured the attention of this rapidly graying nation with reports of scamming relatives and overworked social workers and sad tales of old people, isolated and forgotten, simply slipping out of touch with society. The story unfolded in late July when police discovered that Sogen Kato, who would have been 111 and was thought to be T…

In comparison; honda = 7 (not inc. acura) toyota = 7 (not inc. lexus) Mazda = 4 Subaru = 5 VW = 4 (not inc. Audi) nissan = 6 (not inc. infiniti) Chrysler = 15 (not inc. Mitsu & Mercedes) Ford = 8 Note to GM; If you want to sell cars you need to advertise. I work with a guy who holds the high mileage claim in our office. He has a 90 Camry 4 cyl with 242,000 miles....original. Not far behind, I have my 92 Regal 3800 coupe with 221,000 miles. We are the only 2 in the 200,000 mile club. At any rate, I rode in his car to a job site last week. What a piece of crap. I thought Camries were supposed to ride smoothly, quietly and be well put together. Not this Camry...noisy engine, unremarkable ride and the usual assortment of squeaks and rattles. In short, my Regal runs circles around this car in how quiet and smooth it is. I got out of his car thinking how glad I am to drive an American vehicle.

So yesterday was another ho-hum sunny, 75 degree day, then last night came and brought with it the evil storm clouds. I was at my girlfriend's house, which was right in the path of the strom, about two blocks away a tornado dropped, threw some loose stuff around, downed some power lines, ripped off some shingles from a few roofs, nothing too damaging, the worst damage was done by baseball (according to the weatherman it even got to be cell phone sized ) hail. We had nothing, no hail, just some rain and enough wind to throw up some loose grass and make my car really dirty. At least I thought that was the worst of it, I found out that really wasn't the worst. About fou…
