Toyota Has One-Truck Mind Regarding Diesel Date posted: 09-13-2007 | Link to Original Article @ Edmunds NEW YORK — Fugheddabout diesel engines for anything other than the Tundra pickup, says Toyota Motor Executive Vice President Kazuo Okamoto, who's in charge of, among other things, Toyota's Vehicle Engineering Group. This, despite assertive plans by rivals Honda and Nissan to deploy diesel-powered variants of their mainstream Maxima (2009) and Accord (2010) sedans. If it is to launch diesel engines for the U.S., the only product that appears to make a business case is the Tundra, said Toyota executives. Toyota had long been known to be interested in launching a di…

Original story HERE While I am no fan of Toyota, I find it extremely funny that people would somehow expect Toyota to NOT sell full size trucks and SUV's. They are in business to make money and there is a lot of money to be made in the full size truck/SUV arena. To think they would abandon that market because they are a green company is just absurd.

Our neighbor is a Toyota guy - he cannot tell you why, he just is. He just took delivery last Fall of the new Avalon. Oddly enough - he just received a 'pull ahead' letter from Toyota Motor to move him into a Newer car! His has only around 8,000 miles on it...little early for a pull ahead? Read on! Another friend of the family had a 2006 Camry that he leased last year as a closeout. Guess what he just got - A PULL AHEAD letter from Toyota buying him out of his lease and putting him in the 07 Camry! He took the bait. I can hardly think that this is a coincidence! So, my question in this: Has anyone else seen/heard or experienced this? Is Toyota trying to move…

NHTSA Investigates Toyota Sienna and Two SUVs Toyota Motor Corp.'s 2004 and 2005 Sienna minivans with power rear liftgates are being investigated by U.S. safety regulators after reports of 14 injuries when the liftgates unexpectedly closed. The inquiry covers 142,418 of the minivans, Rae Tyson, a spokesman for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said Wednesday. The probe began Dec. 1. Gas in high-pressure struts that open and close the liftgates may leak because of a faulty seal, the Washington-based agency said on its Web site. [...] Toyota also said Wednesday it will ask owners of 159,100 2001-02 RAV4 small SUVs and 60,700 2001-03 four-cylinder Highlan…

Toyota is planning a big push with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. According to Reuters, the Japanese automaker is doubling-down on investments for fuel cell vehicles by making improvements to reduce costs and building different models including commercial trucks. “We’re going to shift from limited production to mass production, reduce the amount of expensive materials like platinum used in FCV components, and make the system more compact and powerful,” said Yoshikazu Tanaka, chief engineer of the Mirai. Currently, Toyota hand builds the Mirai at a plant in Toyota City. Everyday, about 6.5 cars roll out of the plant. This is due to the detailed inspections that par…

December 20,2011 black-knight CheersandGears.com If you've been following the news about the upcoming Detroit Auto Show, you'd already know that Lexus was planning to pull the wraps off of a brand new concept car that would showcase their upcoming design direction for all future vehicles. Lexus previously released two teaser images that revealed the driver's side headlamp and a portion of the interior of the car. Thanks to Road & Track, though, you don't have to wait until next month to see the entire car. Someone blew the lid on the whole thing through R&T's YouTube account with a video that intended to preview the cover of next month's issue. What's revealed…

Twelve Lexus dealers in the U.S. are part of a pilot program of offering haggle-free pricing as a way to improve customer satisfaction. “While negotiation-free pricing is not revolutionary, we strongly believe the concept will further elevate transaction transparency and customer care,” said Jeff Bracken, general manager of Lexus at the CAR Management Briefing Seminars. Wards Auto says the program works by dealers setting prices that will be relative to their local market. “They’ll drive it based on what they think is a reasonable sale price and they really do stick to that price,” said Bracken. From there, a buyer comes into the dealership and pays the pr…

Toyota RAV4 grows up, gets pricier By Paul & Anita Lienert Toyota's baby crossover vehicle, the RAV4, isn't much of a baby anymore -- not since a makeover for model year 2006 transformed this once-compact five-seater into a mid-size seven-seater with optional V-6 engine. The new-generation RAV4 appears to be up to Toyota's usual high standards, with a few surprising exceptions. We drove a well-equipped RAV4 Limited 4x4 with more than $2,700 in options and a bottom line of $27,290. HE: Gee, I kind of miss the old, toylike RAV, even though I outgrew cutesy vehicles like that about 30 years ago. Plus I never did fit in the old one very well. But for singles and youn…

Toyota: 9.8M Sales in 2008 Toyota set a goal of selling 9.8 million vehicles worldwide in 2008, a 20 percent jump from last year, as it hones in on ailing General Motors' crown as the world's top automaker. The fast-growing Japanese automaker also raised its profit forecast for the quarter to September, saying it was cashing in on robust sales overseas and a weaker yen. Yesterday I was on my way back from a delivery when I new Tundra passed by on the main road I was turning onto. It was loaded with 2 queen mattresses tied to the top of the bed with some stuff under it in the bed itself and the tailgate down. I was thinking to myself "Huh, someone's actually using it for it's purpose. But a second later I noticed that the tailgate seemed warped. Curious, I turned onto the road and followed it a little ways instead of going down left side of the fork in the road I went right (the way it was going). I thought may be it was an illusion, since the outer sheetmetal is rounded...but looking at it I saw that inside part with the bedliner did i…

Japan Certifies Toyota Plug-in Hybrid for Public-road Tests Link to Original Article @ The Auto Channel Tokyo July 25, 2007; TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that it has developed a plug-in hybrid vehicle and become the first manufacturer to have such a vehicle certified for use on public roads in Japan. The TOYOTA Plug-in HV — certified for public road-use by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport — uses, like earlier TMC-developed hybrid vehicles, both a gasoline-powered internal combustion engine and an electric motor. But increased battery capacity gives it a longer electric-motor-only cruising range and a battery-charging device all…

Toyota has announced that they will be bringing a new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to the Los Angeles Auto Show this year. The difference for this hybrid is that it will be a plug-in and it will also be more powerful. Toyota promises "spirited acceleration" in their press release. As we get closer to the show, we'll get more details on range, power, battery size, etc. The RAV4 is already the best selling crossover in the segment and that could mean that the RAV4 PHEV could end up being the most popular PHEV for sale. Globally that title currently belongs to the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Toyota has twice previously made full EV versions of the RAV4, but limited their …

It is amazing to read articals like this and observe the obvious media bias in favor of toyota. They make excuses for toyota and then say that these screw ups, which have led to the death of some people, won't affect people's perception of the quality of toyota vehicles...?? Then, in the middle of the article, they have to state that Ford had the largest single recall back in 1996. It was for ignition switches. Nobody was killed or injured in the problem Ford had with those switches, so I think that it is yet another example of how the media folks love those foreign cars and try to talk people in to disliking American vehicles. Toyota to r…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 31, 2012 After teasing us with a photo last week, Lexus has unveiled the new LS sedan at a event in San Francisco, CA last night. The old saying of "the more things change, the more the stay the same" plays very well into in the LS. Starting with the exterior, the new LS carries the same profile as the old one, but Lexus did make some changes to bring it line with their current lineup. That includes a redesigned front end that includes Lexus' spindle grille and a set of new LED headlights, and a changed back end which includes a new trunk lid and a new bumper. Underneath the sheet metal, the LS' wheelbase has grown…

Whenever an automaker announces a fuel cell vehicle, one of two things happen: It will be near future (which it doesn't) It goes on sale (only in California since it has the infastructure) Well Toyota's fuel cell vehicle will attempt to buck both of those trends. Meet the 2016 Mirai, Toyota's first fuel cell vehicle that will go on sale starting next year in California. The Mirai is the production version of the FCV concept that has been making the rounds for the past couple of year. The shape looks to be a mix of Prius and Corolla (we'll let you decide if that's a good thing or not). Inside, the Mirai features more influences from the Prius with a digital gauge c…

Revealed today before its official debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in a couple weeks time, the RC is expected to go on sale sometime next year as a 2015 model. The RC is definitely a Lexus in its design. The overall profile is very reminiscent of the LF-NX concept shown at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Up front is the largest spindle grille ever put onto a Lexus vehicle. The side features embellished wheel wells and a distinctive character line running the whole length. Inside the RC, its very similar to the new IS sedan. There is s…

So far, it has unveiled all-new generations of the GS and ES sedans and revised versions of the LX and RX SUVs. Next up is the LS flagship. Are we seeing Toyota's 2006 that will roughly end up being GM's 1957...without the style? At least most of GM's endevors had some sort of tie in to the main business. What does building pre-fab houses have to do with building cars?

Most enthusiasts have a deep love for wagons. So it should come as no surprise as many enthusiasts are falling head over heels for this Toyota 86 Shooting Brake concept that was shown today in Australia. The concept takes the 86's body and extends the roofline towards the back to create a wagon shape. What makes this concept really impressive is that it is fully functional as it has run a few laps on Toyota's various test tracks. Back in 2014, the chief engineer for the 86, Tetsuya Tada was visiting Toyota's Australia office where he was shown a one-quarter scale clay model. He was impressed by the work that he decided to bring this idea to life. A hand-picked tea…

Along with the polls above, lets speculate on 'who gets Toyota's lost market share? .... and, how much (what percent) of market share do they lose? For example, if their share of the market currently is 16% and you think their share will go down to 14%, then they will lose 2% of market share. For percent, assume the period of time is all of calendar year 2010.

Toyota's Future Gameplan Still more segments to conquer By MARK RECHTIN | Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek Much of Toyota's volume growth over the past decade has come from vehicles that enter new segments, such as the Prius, FJ Cruiser and the trio of Scion nameplates. Their segment-busting ACE crossover arrives in the fall of 2008, and a return to sports cars is in the works as well. As the Toyota Supra continues its slow march to production, the automaker is considering adding another sports car that may revive an iconic nameplate. "We want to have Celica back, we want to have the MR2 back," said Masayuki Kai, Assistant Chief Engineer on the Supra project. The biggest was Supra. Supra was number one, the biggest demand from the market. Now that we've brought Supra back, what will come next depends on the market needs." Kai suggested that nothing is set in stone, but did hint that the Celica could be an all-wheel drive performance coupe. The MR2 could keep its mid-engine layout if a business case could be made. There lies within th…

Anyone else remember these? The pace, the music, the consistency, the slogans all made for much better car commercials back in the 80s than now. "Oh What a Feeling" with the actor jumping in the air and naming the model made you remember the car. Now it's some lame voiceover reminding you they're "Moving Forward." Snooze. Same with Ford, Chevy, etc. BTW, Dan Gurney's effort for the Celica and Supra was terrific. There's only one I could find. http://youtube.com/watch?v=9Z4G8lQuXy4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qLhiDx4w_U&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMqmZZfxtYM...feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0PqBNkaAxw...feature=related …

freep apologies if this is posted elsewhere CHICAGO --To the amazement of many, Toyota failed to reinvent the pickup truck Thursday. "It's not the breakthrough I expected," said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific, an industry consulting company based in Tustin, Calif. "It'll be a good seller for Toyota, but it doesn't change the landscape."

It was at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where Lexus introduced us to the fourth-generation GS sedan. Well, Lexus has chosen Pebble Beach once again to introduce us to updated GS. The big news for the GS is a new base GS 200t. As the name suggests, this new trim gets Lexus' turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic, Lexus says the GS 200t will get 33 MPG combined. Along with the new turbo-four, Lexus is also giving the GS 350 a slight boost in power. The 350's V6 will now produce 311 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque (up from 306 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque). …

The Lexus IS is quite good vehicle - aside from the looks - but it has one big problem. The base 2.5L V6 is a bit of a dog. There isn't enough power to move the IS around. Luckily, Lexus has a solution for this problem in Europe for the time being. Meet the Lexus IS 200t which has the same turbocharged 2.0L four found in the NX crossover. This produces 245 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The engine will come paired with an eight-speed automatic. Lexus claims an 7 second run to 60 MPH and combined fuel economy of 33 MPG on the European cycle. The IS 200t will go on sale in September in Europe. The U.S. will be getting the IS 200t, but no date as to when we…

Autoblog Today, Lexus announced a recall on 2006-model-year GS 300 and IS 250/350 models. Approximately 34,000 cars are involved in the recall over two fuel pipes in high-stress areas that can crack over time. Only one case has been reported, with no accidents, the company says. The recall involves both rear- and all-wheel-drive versions of the GS and IS. Owners will receive notifications in the mail in December and can visit their Lexus dealer to have newly designed fuel pipes installed at no charge.

After offering $1500 to dealers to sweeten the deal of base Tundras to customers who may use them for business reasons, they have added a $2000 incentive for dealers "to better motivate them to purchase the new Tundra for use as a parts delivery truck." The Toyota dealers probably want a Sierra. A little easier on the eyes if you have to stare at it every day, and from what I hear, the GM trucks are safer too. http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070316/toyota_offering.html?.v=1

AP article Jan. 29, 2010 04:13 PM Associated Press Toyota executives have been virtually silent amid a recall of millions of their cars because gas pedals can become dangerously stuck. For their customers, oh, what a feeling - fear, frustration, confusion and anger. Since Tuesday, when the Japanese automaker said it would stop making and selling some of its top-selling models, the company has had few answers for dealers and drivers - most notably when Toyota owners could get their cars fixed and hit the road without worrying. "I'm stuck with this car," said Tony Raasch of Hales Corners, Wis., who said he hit another driver in his 2010 Corolla two weeks ago when the c…

For the past couple of years, we have reporting on countless rumorpile stories concerning the Scion FR-S. Most of these stories have dealt with a convertible and turbo power, and whether or not they are off or back on the table. Well it might be that two things may never come. Wards Auto spoke with Doug Murtha, senior vice president at Scion. Murtha explained that Toyota couldn't make a business case for either proposal. “So on the convertible we went down swinging,” said Murtha. “I think we were pretty aggressive on our (submitted plan), but we looked at what we would have conceivably lost on the product and said, ‘We’re not going to even push it further.’ Nobody was m…

Another N.A. plant for Toyota? Count on it Mark Rechtin | | Automotive News / April 3, 2006 - 6:00 am LOS ANGELES -- Expect still another Toyota assembly plant in North America. Toyota Motor Corp.'s North American planning group is evaluating the company's North American sales plan for 2010 and beyond. The group's early conclusion: More manufacturing capacity will be needed beyond the five assembly plants operating and two under construction. "We have been consistent, conservative and steady. But it does make sense" to add capacity beyond what the company has already announced, says Steve Sturm, vice president of North America planning for Toyota Motor Sales U.…

In other news in Europe, Toyota's partner Peugeot will likely allow Toyota to use some of its platform such as the very Epsilon-like platform used by the 407 and the very Chi-like platform currently used by the 607. What does this mean? That the the next gen Yaris and Corolla will get handling and suspension help from the French. More interesting is the fact that these euro-platforms will lead to Toyota finally having a Camry and an Avalon that have good handling. The 2012 Camry,ES, & Rav4 will likely be on the 407-platform. The next Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, and possilbly the next Tacoma will likely be on the 607-platfrom. This will mean several things. GM must …

Toyota's Environmental Image Challenged Never mind that the Toyota Prius is popular with environmentally conscious motorists -- some environmentalists still wonder if Toyota is living up to its image as a green automaker. Environmental groups, led by the Natural Resources Defense Council, are challenging Toyota Motor Corp.'s opposition to strict fuel economy standards pending in Congress, a position the Japanese company shares with General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC. During the past two weeks, about 8,300 NRDC activists sent e-mails and faxes to Toyota urging the company to support a Senate energy bill that would set a 35-mile-per-gallon requirem…

This new commercial for Lexus explains how they reinvent the way "we" see in the night with such innovative features as a "heads up display" and "new illuminating headlamps". Both of these features are nothing new but they have a jazzy little commercial and imply they are there own well thought out ideas. That's all fine and good but if I did not know better I would believe they thought of these "innovations" I can recall Pontiacs and I think even Olds' with HUD from nearly 20 years ago. And now GM cuts 1,000,000,000 from their own advertising budget. If anyone wants to watch. Its not a bad commercial and must congratulate the marketing gurus. http://w…

Now, car number three is being shown in production form. The Toyota Prius C is coming to Detroit next January. The car is about the size of a Yaris but is packing a hybrid drivetrain that is a 1.5L gasoline engine coupled with an undisclosed "high-output" electric motor. The Prius C is expected to get the highest MPG of the group with 50 MPG. If you would have asked me 15 years ago if Darrell Waltrip's signature would adorn the side of a Toyota truck, I would have laughed. And today I still laugh, and then cry for the shell of a sport that NASCAR has become. I can only pray that GM is the domestic manufacturer pulling out of the craptacular crapfest known as NASCAR. (and this from someone who has grown up with NASCAR, and now say RIP 2006) Can't wait 'till the DW edition of the Camry next year! http://www.toyota.com/tundra/dw.html

Toyota's latest quality issues could lead to a recall of the brand-new Tundra pickup. Some owners of V-8 Tundras have reported camshaft failures in their trucks. Toyota told the Detroit News that it had logged 20 such complaints. The problem could affect as many as 30,000 Tundras built at assembly plants in Indiana and Texas. Toyota had planned to sell 200,000 Tundras in the truck's first year as a part of an aggressive expansion plan in the United States . The company has opened a new San Antonio plant to assemble the truck; has expanded an Alabama engine plant to supply to factory; and has also started construction on plants in Ontario and Mississippi as it tries to m…

BusinessWeek Online Toyota Builds A Truck Even Bubba May Love Friday February 3, 3:59 pm ET By David Kiley When Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM - News) Corp. engineers visited South Texas to ask locals what they wanted in a full-size pickup, the out-of-towners got a quick education in priorities. Sure, the truck had to be big and powerful, but it also needed Texas-size brakes to stop three-plus tons of horses, hay, gear, and trailer from taking out a corral fence or barn post. Toyota listened and learned. And at the Chicago Auto Show on Feb. 9, it will fire its boldest shot yet into the already wobbly defenses of Detroit's auto makers -- taking the wraps off the first full-siz…

TOKYO - Japan's top automaker, Toyota Motor Corp., said Tuesday it will recall 246,592 vehicles in Japan, including Crown sedan and Hiace van models produced between 1998 and 2005, due to possible corrosion of parts in the engine. Toyota spokesman Hideki Fujii said the company is considering whether to recall about 1.05 million vehicles of the same models exported to overseas markets, including Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, India and European countries. None of the models involved were exported to the United States and Canada, Fujii said. The surface of a bolt in the engine will erode due to the remaining cleansing liquid, breaking the bolt and causing the vehicl…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 14, 2013 The past few generations of the Toyota Corolla have played it safe. But with the introduction of the Toyota Corolla Furia concept today at the Detroit Auto Show, Toyota appears to be taking some chances. As the company said in a press release, "this exciting compact sedan concept hints at the styling cues consumers can expect to see on the next-generation Corolla." The Corolla Furia Concept has a very striking front end with a sleek, low-profile upper grille that extends into LED headlights at the corners. Underneath, there is a larger grille. Other design cues to take note of are a raked windshield, …

The Turds new V8 Scroll to the bottom and it looks like the 5.3 still have more power. Toyota also hopes more people opt for the more efficient V8 versus the hoggish 5.7. Even to a GM fan this is good news Toyota is offering another pussy mid-level motor. Once GM gets the six speed autos in all 5.3's Toyota will really have something to cry about. Interesting news tho.
