Taking one quick glance at the "CyberSurvey" poll over on the DetroitNews web-site will show you that people simply put, do not care regarding the UAW (duh, Josh) Delphi or more importantly do not care about General Motors as significant enough to keep around. This is very telling. The day in age when General Motors has gone from the epitimy of Automotive Excellence, of titanic proportions (yet, not quite failing. I'm not one to count them down just yet) and you can really see that people do not think GM is worthwhile in todays market place, nor in the future marketplace of the United States. Just sit back and read the responses the Detroit News has a…

Now news comes that GM and the Union have reached a tentative agreement and the union council will vote today on whether to end the walkout of 46,000 workers or wait until the agreement is ratified by union members. The Union and GM plan to discuss the deal after the vote has taken place. We will update this article as more news comes. Update 1:20 pm: Healthcare remains as-is. DETROIT -- As General Motors moves to value pricing, it is training its dealers to boost sales of add-on accessories. Retail sales of accessories are an estimated $30 billion a year business in the United States. The business grew by two-thirds between 1998 and 2004. GM dealers sold about $1 billion in accessories last year, says Nancy Philippart, executive director of General Motors Accessories. "Customers have more flexibility and choice at the point of sale," Philippart says. "They get what they want, and that increases our odds of making the (vehicle) sale." With value pricing, GM wants to curb incentives and move transaction pri…

General Motors might have figured out what caused the Volt to catch on fire in a NHTSA storage yard back in June. A source tells the Associated Press the cause of the fire is the coolant used in batteries to help keep them cool. The coolant didn't catch on fire, but crystallized and caused a short circuit. But just as that information was coming out, Reuters learned from a couple sources that GM is closing in on a package of proposed fixes for the battery pack. The fixes include laminating the circuitry in the Volt's 400-pound battery pack, reinforcing the case surrounding the lithium-ion battery and better protecting the coolant system from leaks in a severe crash. Th…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 15, 2013 When General Motors introduced their next-generation full-size SUVs last month, some people were expecting some major changes to the powertrains. What was introduced were the next-generation of V8 engines and that was really about it. However, GM's chief engineer for trucks says changes are coming. "We've got some interesting powertrain technologies coming on the SUVs over the next few years," said GM's executive chief engineer for trucks, Jeff Luke. For example, Luke hinted that the Escalade's current six-speed automatic will give way to a higher-geared transmission in the future. Under consideration …

The Daily Auto Insider Tuesday, January 31, 2006 January 2006 At the Houston Auto Show, GM executives told the Dow Jones that demand from dealers for their new full-sized vehicles exceeded the automaker’s expectation. CEO Rick Wagoner, praised the fuel efficiency of GM’s large vehicles. Both GM and Ford suffered large market loss to foreign competitors as the SUV and pickup market slowed last year. Nonetheless, GM is pinning its hopes on the launch this year of its GMT 900 line of full-size trucks and SUVs. GM says these new models will encompass about a third of its sales in 2006. Wagoner told the Dow it's too early to predict how well the new large utility vehicl…

For the first half of this year, General Motors posted a profit of $6.3 billion, making it the best start in over two-decades. However, GM CEO Dan Akerson wants the company to do better. $6.3 Billion is nothing to scoff at, but Akerson points out that figure equates to a 6% margin. He wants to see GM beat out the 7% margins realized by Ford & Volkswagen. So how will GM do it? By cutting. GM has put forth plans to have just 14 global architectures by 2018, a dramatic drop from the 30 architectures in use. Also, GM will cut down their engine platforms from 20 to 10 in the same time frame. Akerson is also targeting the company’s marketing efforts to help cut costs. GM…

The WSJ reported that GM will entertain a pact with other companies, should the N-R deal fall through. It sounds almost like Rick has planned out the outcome of the 90 review. Well anyway, I got to thinking about VW. What do you guys think of those companies coming together in some capacity? VW wouldn't threaten GM in North America at all and the 2 companies would be a juggernaut in Europe, Asia, and South America. Unlike Nissan-Renault, VW does have some good technology and masterful interior making that could actually help GM in America. On the downside, VW is plagued with their own problems too, but not to the extent of Ford.

So once again, in my opinion, Phil LeBeau distills GM's 'situation' down into it's essence.. [the article] Saving GM: Inside the Crisis, Automobile Industry, Bailout, Business, Manufacturing Behind the Wheel - Phil Lebeau Talk about a re-structuring. In one full swoop, the White House has made it clear it will re-make America's largest auto maker from the top down. This goes way beyond dumping the CEO of a company gasping for air. This is the start of the Treasury Department actively changing who and how GM operates. So what happens next for GM? Negotiators have been meeting daily since the UAW went on strike on September 16th and according to sources, the two sides are nearing a deal as talks have intensified over the last 48 hours. All of the issues have reached the "Main Table" and are out of subcommittee which is a sign that a deal is imminent. The initial offer from GM included $7 billion in investments in eight of its US facilities, while also adding 5,400 new jobs. The UAW rejected the initial offer saying that it wasn't enough in terms of pay raises, healthcare, and tenure requirements. GM also offered an $8,000 signing bonus per member to accept the deal. The primary issues are GM's use of te…

Reuters / September 12, 2005 SEOUL -- GM Daewoo Automotive & Technology Co., South Korea's third-largest automaker, will acquire the main plant of the former Daewoo Motor firm on Sept. 30 in a move to boost its capacity, GM Daewoo said on Monday. The Pupyung plant, located in Inchon, west of Seoul, had been left out of the 2002 deal in which General Motors and partners took a majority stake in some of the assets of bankrupt Daewoo Motor. GM Daewoo had previously agreed to buy the plant, which is now operating separately as Daewoo Incheon Motor Co. Ltd., this year when a number of conditions -- including reducing labor strife -- were met. "Our sharehold…

General Motors and LG Chem are joining forces to invest $2.3 billion in a new battery plant near its old Lordstown Assembly complex in Lordstown, Ohio. The deal is a 50/50 partnership between GM and LG Chem and will create 1,100 jobs in the area. Construction of the plant will begin mid-2020 at a greenfield former manufacturing site. The employees will work for the joint-venture and will not be direct GM employees. Initially, the plant will solely supply batteries for GM vehicles, though with a maximum capacity of 30 gigawatt-hours annually, the company could expand to supply other manufacturers as well. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 10, 2013 Its nice whenever spy shots show a group vehicles undergoing some testing. Its even better when the group has the all the different models in one group. Case in point, Automobile Magazine has some new spy shots featuring the new 2015 GM full-size SUV lineup. The test mules in the pictures look to be wearing the production-ready bodies. The differences between the mules are dependent on the headlights and grilles. NEW YORK (AP) - General Motors Corp. shares dropped to their lowest point in more than 15 years Tuesday after a report showed it losing market share to Asian automakers in December and Toyota threatened to at least match GM's production next year. GM also recalled more than 400,000 vans on Tuesday because of faulty seat belts. Burnham Securities analyst David Healy suggested the stock's decline -- nearly 4 percent in afternoon trading -- was more likely tied to general pessimism about the automaker's future than any of the day's announcements. The company's shares were down 75 cents, or 3.6 percent, at $20.30 in afternoon trading on the N…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 29, 2012 Automotive News reports General Motor's global marketing chief, Joel Ewanick is leaving. The reason according to General Motors is Ewanick didn't meet expectations. GM hired Ewanick back in May 2010. Prior to this, he worked at Nissan for two months. Before Nissan, Ewanick worked at Hyundai where he was the chief of marketing and is credited with creating Hyundai Assurance, which allowed owners that lost their jobs to return their vehicles. During his tenure, Ewanick led a consolidation of marketing and advertising agency work at GM. The biggest consolidation to place last spring when Chevrolet's marketin…

By Maria Panaritis INQUIRER STAFF WRITER The e-mail video that General Motors Corp. sent to its Saturn dealers last night was an odd mix of apology and pep rally. The automaker had just told Congress it would do away with Saturn as part of a drastic restructuring plan to qualify GM for billions more in emergency taxpayer loans. For 209 Saturn franchises across the country - a dozen of which are in the Philadelphia area - the news was potentially devastating. "I know you've been dealing with the emotion of it, the frustration of it, maybe even the anger of it," Jill Lajdziak, general manager of Saturn, said as dealers Tom Zimbrick and Todd Ingersoll sat by he…

Industry: The world changed. The world's largest (for now) automaker didn't. The good news is that most U.S. businesses haven't made the same mistake. Barring some miracle — such as a car that really clicks with consumers — General Motors Corp. is facing a future with no pleasant options. The least painful would be drastic downsizing, which means axing whole divisions like Pontiac and Buick, not just closing a few plants as it announced this week. It also might go into Chapter 11 or sell itself off in pieces, if anyone will buy. This is a woeful tale indeed, but it also comes with a sense of inevitability. No one has any reason to be surprised. GM&#…

BY MICHAEL ELLIS FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER General Motors Corp. shares closed above $30 for the first time in more than nine months on Tuesday amid growing expectations that the troubled automaker could post an operating profit today. The higher stock price put billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian back in the black on his nearly $1.7-billion investment in GM stock. If GM beats earnings forecasts, analysts say CEO Rick Wagoner could tout the figures as proof that his turnaround plan is succeeding and the automaker doesn't need to join an alliance with Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA. "I believe that it will demonstrate beyond any possible doubt that Mr. Wagoner is …

When General Motors decided to study the Ford F-150 to help make the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra, they sent engineers to the front door of where the F-150 is built. According to Reuters, engineers went on a public factory tour of Ford's Dearborn truck plant to study how Ford was building them. Special attention was paid to workers attaching aluminum body panels to the trucks. After watching and timing the fitment of parts with stopwatches, GM engineers found some problems. “They had a real hard time getting those doors to fit,” said Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer for GM truck programs. Focusing on the doors, engineers bought F-150…

If everyone else is going to build cars like Tata's headline-grabbing Nano, GM's going to pile on, too. The Lutz cites GM's part-ownership stake in Wuling Motors, a Chinese manufacturer of sub-$3,000 utility vehicles as a possible source of a GM Nano competitor. Lutz went on to say that one way to make an inexpensive car for the developing world is to repurpose a legacy platform that has become obsolete. The tooling and design will have long been paid off, and there'll be plenty of experience from the manufacturing side, too. Read the whole article here.

Robert Snell / The Detroit News DETROIT -- Turns out General Motors Corp.'s employee discount isn't for everyone. The automaker, which last week temporarily extended the perk nationally to anyone in a bid to boost sales and clear out inventory, simultaneously filed three lawsuits alleging fraud as the company cracks down on employees, retirees and widows giving discounts to nonrelatives, according to court documents. Along with other recent lawsuits, the automaker is suing for more than $450,000 plus costs and attorney fees. "What an irony, huh?" lawyer John Pieri said. He represents a retired autoworker in Buffalo, N.Y., who is being sued for $45,501 and accused of…

A fresh Perspective on GM and the auto industry http://www.321gold.com/editorials/shedlock...lock101405.html MarketWatch is reporting "Ford's SUV Sales Halved in September": "Ford Motor Co. reported Monday that sales of its traditional SUVs plunged 51% in September, as consumers continued their mass exodus from the thirstiest vehicles on the road amid record gasoline prices. "Overall, Ford turned in a 19% decline in U.S. sales last month, to 228,157 cars and trucks. Sales of crossovers have been booming in the past year thanks to lower gas prices. Sensing a huge opportunity, General Motors is planning to add more crossovers to its various brands. The Detroit Bureau reports that Cadillac is planning to add a crossover that will compete with the likes of the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. We first reported on this back in November as Cadillac plans to add a compact, subcompact, and full-size crossover to its lineup in the next few years. No mention was given in either report of when we'll see the subcompact crossover. Meanwhile at Chevrolet, sources say the brand is considering a new midsize model to slot in between the Equinox…

Workers at General Motors' CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario are reeling from the news this morning that 625 workers will be laid off. This unexpected move comes as the plant will solely focus on production of the new Chevrolet Equinox. Production of the GMC Terrain which had been part of CAMI will move down to Mexico for the 2018 model. Not surprising, officials at Unifor are none too pleased with this. “I’m shocked, it’s an absolute embarrassment on behalf of GM as far as I’m concerned,” said Mike Van Boekel, chairperson of Unifor Local 88 to London radio station AM980. "It was previously announced with employees that the next generation GMC Terrain will be pro…

One of the things I admire about the Toyota corporation is their clearcut brand identities. Unlike GM, who acquired all of these varying brands via buyouts, Toyota acquired brands by creating them to fill a void they saw in thier line-up. That puts Toyota at a distinct advantage over GM which has to balance the future of any brand identity with the brand's history. All Toyota has to do with its brands is deal with the future. For example, when Pontiac relaesed a Mini-van, people booed & hissed because THAT wasn't what Pontiac was supposed to be. Toyota makes Lexus whatever they want... there is no history to contend with. With that, they have a very well defin…

As sales of compacts and sport cars begin declining, automakers are faced with tough decisions as to what in terms of production and workers. General Motors made the difficult decision to lay off 2,000 workers at two plants. Bloomberg reports that GM will be cutting the third shift at their Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan (home to Cadillac ATS, CTS, and Chevrolet Camaro) and a shift at Lordstown, Ohio plant (home to the Chevrolet Cruze). GM spokesman Tom Wickham said the company is treating the layoffs as permanent, although some workers will be able to transfer to other plants. The layoffs are due to sales of compact and sports cars going down due to consum…

It's been a long time since we've seen this. Not long ago, I remember the $ 18.60 +/- stock price. It takes money to make money and one who has spare cash laying around could have bought a chunk of shares, sold them today, and paid Bush's smaller capital gains tax on these (it won't be 15% with the next administration...LOL). In fact, that's what a lot of rich investors have done...they buy strong companies in a down cycle and wait for the upturn. I bought several hundred at $ 21 and sold them at $ 37. Could have done better, but, in less than 2 years, not bad, I guess. Any thoughts on GM stock? Do you see it doing a meteoric rise like Boeing?

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 12, 2012 GM is retiring one of their workhorse engines. The 2.4L four-cylinder found under the hoods of the Buick Regal and Verano, Chevrolet Equinox, and GMC Terrain will say farewell. In it’s place will be a new 2.5L DI four-cylinder. The new four-cylinder will make its debut in the regular Chevrolet Malibu, due out this summer. The engine is rated at 190 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. This is a decent size bump in power compared to the 2.4L’s 169 hp with port injection and 182 hp from the direct-injected version. The changeover will happen within the next twelve months. GM hasn’t said if the 2.5L will also ta…

After three years of fighting, General Motors has finally gotten the green light from IP Australia to use the Corvette emblem in the country. Wheels Magazine reports that Australia's governing body on trademarks has rejected GM's application for the Corvette emblem four different times. The initial rejection by IP Australia was due to yellow-on-red bowtie used on the emblem looking similar to the Red Cross, "a symbol protected under international law and with deep ties to Australia’s wartime history," according to Wheels. The international law in question is the Geneva Conventions Act of 1957 which states the emblem can only be used during times of war or conflict as…

GM's Lansing Plants Turn It Around This winter, Lansing's auto industry has new life. GM's Lansing Grand River plant, which opened in 2001, is cranking out Cadillacs and ranks among the world's best auto plants in quality. In November, GM's Lansing Delta Township Plant started making a new family of large crossovers - the GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and Buick Enclave. Some local officials and workers are hoping GM will add another assembly plant at the Delta Township location, on Lansing's western edge. The hope of expansion may be getting ahead of the Lansing - and GM - auto story. GM is in the process of scaling back North American production because of declining sale…

EDWARD LAPHAM COMMENTARY 8/23/05: Can a U.S.-built car be the next great Euro roadster? By Edward Lapham Automotive News / August 23, 2005 General Motors execs expect big results from the low-volume Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters, which will be image-building halo vehicles for their brands. Initial Solstice sales make it popular, but production is being ramped up slowly, so Pontiac dealers are clamoring for more cars. Some Pontiac dealers are grumbling that GM shouldn't give Saturn dealers a version, even though it goes into production this year. What's less certain is how Europeans will accept the Opel roadster that is expected for 2007.…

From my friend Robert Farago www.thetruthaboutcars.com When the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the world’s largest automaker tells his shareholders to think long-term, there’s only one word for it: sell. Yes, I know. The General got itself into this death spiral by thinking short-term: investing its precious resources in a dead genre guzzling, buying brands instead of investing in existing ones, pushing pushrods, rebadging anything that wasn’t nailed down, and so on and so on stretching back forty years. But Wagoner’s no corporate visionary. What he’s really saying is hang on boys and girls, a bunch of bad $h! is about to go down. Those of…

UAW spokesman Paul Krell said that the UAW had notified locals by e-mail that an agreement is possible. A source inside GM says it is "very confident" but added that the automaker could impose unilateral benefits cuts this week if talks fail. Krell said GM has not raised the possibility of unilateral cuts in talks. A spokesman for GM declined comment.

November 26, 2008 - 1:00 pm ET UPDATED: 11/26/08 1:19 p.m. EST DETROIT (Reuters) -- Shares of General Motors and Ford Motor Co. jumped today after Deutsche Bank said chances have improved for the struggling U.S. automakers to receive a government bailout. "There is growing concern about the risks to the U.S. economy that would be derived from inaction," Deutsche Bank analyst Rod Lache said in a research note. "The proximity of these bailout hearings to the Citigroup bailout may have also tipped the scales somewhat," Lache said, referring to the massive government rescue of the bank announced Sunday. Now, Reuters is reporting the talks have gone into advance stages and General Motors could be buying up a small share. Reuters has learned from a couple sources at both companies that General Motors would purchase 5% of Peugeot-Citroën as part of their alliance deal. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 19, 2013 It seems diesel mania is hitting truck manufacturers. Ram has the 1500 with a diesel option; Nissan has announced a diesel V8 for the next-generation Titan; and Toyota is considering whether to do a diesel option for the Tundra. Now a new report says General Motors is ready to join the diesel fray in half-tons if it proves to be popular. According to AutoGuide, GM can use the same 3.0L Diesel V6 found in Ram 1500. This is due to GM owning a part of the engine builder of the 3.0L Diesel V6, VM Motori. Also, General Motors commissioned VM Motori to build this engine for the European market CTS a few year…

Today is not a pleasant day if you're a white collar employee at General Motors. Last Friday, reports came out that GM would begin significant layoffs on their white-collar workforce. Back in November, GM announced that it would be slashing 8,000 white-collar workers as part of plans to reduce costs. Already, 2,250 workers have agreed to voluntary buyouts. This leaves 5,750 workers waiting to be cut. But a GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said the number of people being laid off will be roughly around 4,000 people. Morrissey also confirmed that the layoffs will take around two weeks to complete. "This will be implemented staff-by-staff and location-by-location over t…

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. presented suppliers Thursday with a new plan the automaker hopes will improve its relationship with them while cutting its purchasing costs. Under the plan, which will be in effect from the last quarter of this year through 2007, GM will set cost-cutting targets for individual parts rather than setting overall corporate cost-cutting targets for 250 to 300 of its top suppliers. GM spokesman Tom Wickham said suppliers have criticized GM for setting overall cost-cutting targets for supply companies even if they were meeting GM's targets for some of their individual parts. Under the new program, a supplier that makes three or four sepa…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 2, 2012 General Motors released their second quarter earnings report and the results are a bit disappointing. The company posted a net income of $1.5 billion and a revenue of $37.6 billion. Those numbers are significantly down from the same figures in the second quarter of 2011, when GM posted a net income of $2.5 billion and a revenue of $39.4 billion. That's a drop of 40% in income and a 4.6% drop in revenue. This announcement comes a day after GM released their sales results for July, which saw sales drop by 6% compared to 2011 sales. This topic doesn't seem to fit well into any of the categories, so forgive me for posting this under "GM News".. but I've got some question on the Lambda's: 1) The early complaint is that the Lambda's are so large (weighing 4700 lbs). I fully understand the minivan market for which they are targeted for requires them to have a capable third-row which necessitates the long wheelbase & weight, but are there any considerations for a short-wheelbase variant? Something like the Tahoe versus a Suburban. Virtually the same vehicle minus a row of seats. A short wheelbase Lambda might have some appeal. How flexible is the Lambda platform? Would it accomodate something …

Apparently, the banks and funds that own most of General Motors' outstanding bonds were not too thrilled with the idea of writing down $27 billion in loans for a mere 10% stake in the restructured company. In response to GM's proposal to swap debt for stock, a committee of bondholders has made a counter offer. The original GM offer would have given 89% of the automaker to the UAW and the federal government. The counter proposal would shut the government out of the stock swap deal entirely. Instead, creditors and the union would get stakes of 58% and 41% respectively with current stockholders receiving the remaining 1%. The money that the government loaned GM would remai…

TORONTO (CP) - The highly regarded factories of General Motors of Canada are in danger of losing their long-standing labour cost advantage over GM's American operations, an executive of the world's largest automaker said Monday. GM Canada's new three-year agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers, ratified by union members during the weekend, "drove some cost where we'd rather it hadn't," said Al Green, vice-president for personnel of GM Canada. GM won non-wage "offsets" - notably a reduction of health-care costs - to the contract's annual pay increases of 1.5, one and one per cent, plus inflation protection, for its 19,000…

I figured the readers and responders on this forum may generally agree and be able to relate to this particular write up in the Washington Post. The author touches on some good points - that mainly Kerkorian has proposed this alliance or merger with Renault simply for the price of the stock - with absolutely no regard for the long term health and well being of General Motors. Moreover, he touches on how unsuccessful Nissan (and Renault) have been in so many areas, even in some where they've tried to take on GM directly (like the Titan). http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...6071401040.html
