DETROIT - General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) today announced significant new actions to support its ongoing turnaround plan, particularly in its North American business, to reduce costs and business risks, and to further enhance its financial flexibility. These actions include the following: *Revised health-care benefit plan for salaried retirees in the U.S. that is expected to reduce the company's liability by about $4.8 billion and its annual health-care expense by almost $900 million before tax; *Planned restructuring of the U.S. salaried pension benefit plan; *50-percent reduction in the cash dividend paid to stockholders; *Significant reduction in salary for GM'…

  2. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 28, 2013 Before the Chevrolet Volt was launched, General Motor executives were making some very bold claims on production numbers, throwing numbers like 60,000 or 45,000 Volts a year. Since going into production, GM has sold 7,671 Volts in 2011 and 23,461 in 2012. Combine the Opel and Vauxhall Ampera and then you're looking around 30,000 plug-in vehicles. Now for 2013, General Motors looks to be boosting their production number, albeit more realistic. Bloomberg reports that General Motors is planning to boost production of their plug-in vehicles to 36,000, a 20% increase. This information comes from two sourc…

  3. Some interesting tidbits! General Motors held a conference with analysts today in which it outlined the automaker's turnaround progress and plans for 2008, the result of which is a press release (after the jump) that is the most boring piece of literature ever to be read. We tried, and were comatose by the first set of bullet points. Those who soldiered on, however, discovered that GM's cost-cutting plans for 2008 include offering worker buyouts to 46,000 eligible employees and potentially closing more facilities. Follow the jump for the skinny on the details, as well as the official snooze-inducing press release from GM. [source: GM, The Detroit News] The new wor…

  4. General Motors has extended the plant shutdown at their Lordstown, Ohio plant by 'several weeks' as a way to help cut back on the inventory of the Chevrolet Cruzes. According to The Detroit News, workers at the plant were notified of the extension this morning. GM did not say how long the extension would be. Robert Morales, president of UAW Local 1714 said the union doesn't have any information on how long the shutdown will last. GM has been trying to reduce the amount of Cruzes sitting around. Back in November, GM cut a shift at the plant which affected 1,243 workers. The good news is that Cruze inventory has dropped from a 121-day supply that we reported in De…

Sure, it compares in size and price to the new crop of vehicles being produced by other Asian automakers but the Suzuki SX4 is the least expensive all-wheel-drive vehicle on the market. With a five-speed manual transmission its base price is just $14,999. Our Suzuki SX4 came with a four-speed automatic transmission and no options and stickered at just $15,999. We spent two weeks with this charming little hottie and found it to be, well, charming. Although it's a little light on frills, the SX4 is roomy, comfortable and…

I immediately went to a couple of GM web sites to see how certain cars were priced and then to GM card to see if the allowances changed (downward). I did see, however, that some incentives have been lowered. Well, but that was expected. Do you think that the mark-ups will proportionately be the same? Do you think this will mess with the dealers? DO YOU THINK GM WILL SELL MORE CARS OR THAT THE OTHERS WILL FOLLOW SUIT?

  54. As I've said many times before, I see GM selling parts of itself off to the Chinese eventually. Maybe it's brand names, personnel, factories, tooling, or some combination of some or all. But this is the next step as sure as it was for MG Rover. If Saturn's new Opel strategy fails and GM is still running red, a buyer like SAIC would have a pretty nice dealer network already in place. The same could be said for Saab or Hummer or Buick or Pontiac. The Chinese are now the world's largest foreign holders of dollars. Something must be done with these dollars, and the Chinese want to become respected auto players on the world market. 2 + 2 equals 4. Don't think breaking …

The possible alliance would have General Motors looking at BMW's lineup of gas and diesel engines, while BMW is looking at the Voltec powertrain. Wirtschaftswoche reports the two are in talks about jointly developing fuel cell technology for vehicles. The plan would allow BMW to access GM's fuel cell tech. In return, BMW would help pay research costs. When asked about this, a BMW spokesman said, "We are speaking to GM about various future technologies but we are not saying anything more b…

What Ford Motor Co. needs is more top execs with nicknames. You know, like "Red" Poling. At least that's the theory of one Ford lifer who's been there since "Hank the Deuce" was CEO. Technically, "Hank the Deuce" isn't a nickname. It's the way some people refer to Henry Ford II, just as some call Jacques Nasser "Jac the Knife" because he was a cost-cutter. In addition to Harold "Red" Poling, there also was Charles B. "Tex" Thornton, the former army colonel who led the 10 "Whiz Kids" into Ford after World War II. But not all nicknames carry the same weight. Semon Knudsen's nickname, "Bunkie," seems a little trite when you compare it to the "Big Bill" moniker his fa…
