So this past Saturday was $50 Day at Holland's Used Auto, and my best hope of getting a good deal on replacement parts for our beaten up cars. Jessica and I got up bright and early at 5:30am, emptied out the T&C and put the things we thought we'd need in it and headed to Silvester's. We met at about 6:30 and followed Sixty in his RoadMonster to take care of some stuff, get breakfast and head to the junkyard. Our game plan was to hit the Prizms first, since they were near the entrance, then scope out the Cadillacs and proceed to the Intrepids. Even though it was only 8am there was already a good amount of people in the yard and they had a guy directing us to the park…

On Jefferson when it turns to Shook there is an apartment complex on the lake. Well theres a fenced in lot of junk and in the corner there is a DeLorean just sitting there it hasn't moved in a couple of weeks. I drive by it daily drooling for it. Its just how do you find who owns it and how do you approach them to buy their car? camera phones suck i know. you can make it out at the edge. I want to almost steal it. it has a sad puppy face on it too like its neglected. The last thing i need is another car but I want it.

Work has been bad lately. We were bought out and we're in the process of merging the two networks. Strangely, even though this was a straight up purchase and advertised as such, it's really turning into a merger of equals. Most of my old company's stuff is being retained as it's more efficient and more advanced than the stuff our new mothership has. Most of the workforce is being retained as well. During all of this, I'm doing some fairly big renovations on one of my apartment buildings. Chest pains from stress are now a common occurrence. Yesterday, I was sent a link to failblog.com and I was laughing so hard for so long that my co-workers were getting worried. I felt co…

Here's the scene: It is 59 degrees outside and I decide to take Arkus with me to the local Wawa. I head down RT 252 toward my destination behind a host of fools that think pacing the car next to you constitiutes safe driving. After a frustrating, if mercifully short, drive I arrive at my destination. I always park right in front of the building so that Arkus can see me while I'm inside, which I proceed to do. I raise the passenger window to a crack of just over an inch so that Arkus can't push the window out of its track (again), and crack my window about half of an inch. So I go inside and order my breakfast sandwiches and prepare my coffee. when the sandwiches are…

This is a Land Rover Freelander: Want to take a guess on where the main brake lights are? That's right. The brake lights are the two little red portions of the rectangles on the bottom of the rear bumper. The two circular lights were you would expect the brake lights to be are (as far as I know) just there for show. I was behind one of these in traffic the other night and following it was just as bad as if it had no brake lights at all (slight exaggeration but it was still disconcerting having to look at the bumper of a car to see if it was braking). The fact that the third brake light was out and the brake lights barely lit up any brighter when braking didn't h…

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/17/world/asia/17japan.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hp OSAKA, Japan — Like many members of Japan’s middle class, Masato Y. enjoyed a level of affluence two decades ago that was the envy of the world. Masato, a small-business owner, bought a $500,000 condominium, vacationed in Hawaii and drove a late-model Mercedes. But his living standards slowly crumbled along with Japan’s overall economy. First, he was forced to reduce trips abroad and then eliminate them. Then he traded the Mercedes for a cheaper domestic model. Last year, he sold his condo — for a third of what he paid for it, and for less than what he still owed on the mortgage he to…

I'm wondering who else out there (besides myself and OCCarNut) find windshield wipers, wipe pattern, and articulation a kind of "style" on a car, or do they mean absolutely nothing to you? I hate getting into a new car and it has an absolutely BORING wiper system. My new C6 is an example. My C4 I used to have had the wipers that parked in the middle and swung out to opposing ends. That just simply looked COOL. In fact, those are one of my favorite wipers......those that swing out from the center (early-gen W-bodies, GM and Chrysler minivans, new Civic, old Corvette, old 220-class Mercedes, etc.) #1 for me, though, has to be old Mercedes wipers that both parked on…

Finally am getting back out in my shop. I've spent a couple hours for 3 nights cleaning thru stuff & throwing things away, and tonight I began the process of pouring a concrete 'curb' around the inside perimeter of my building. This is because when the floor was originally poured, the bordering form wood to control the pour has rotted over time, and mice have been sneaking in. I hate mice. Anyway, the perimeter is lined with all sorts of stuff, primarily car parts but some outright junk, and I want it all either stored off the floor or sold/tossed. I got only 10-ft done tonight (perimeter is about 110' (24'x48' building with (4) car doors), but chalk that up to getti…

There is an 86 or 87 T-Type Regal sitting outside of my work. It has been there for 3 weeks or so. I don't know what is going on with it but I keep on telling the service manager not to junk it. It is quite nice but needs a little TLC. It is a T-Type because it is engraved into the dash. It also has the hood bulge and the Grand National rims. How much are these worth now when restored and would they be worth restoring? HERE ARE THE PICTURES FINALLY. Sorry about the focus. I was rushing so I wouldn't be late to work.

Well I just watched Tokyo Drift on a bootlegged dvd. and right after it i think Hmmm... I have a FWD beater with a new trans!. Lets destroy it. Oh god i think I drove around for about 2-4 hours doing e brake assisted drifts, spinning the tires while the engine is bouncing off red line while sliding at a 60º angle. Its so unpredictable tho. I thought i was almost about to crash my car a couple times. It will probably get old soon but its so fun. Although RWD is fun and controllable but, doing it in a FWD car is so risky. Any one else find drifting fun? this is true drifting not power sliding. Boot legged DVD are pretty good to I was surprised. The movie was decent bu…

When you buy a new GM car or truck, you don't just get an owner's manual anymore. You get other stuff, like that how-do-i-turn-off-the-wipers pamphlet as well as being mailed other stuff after purchase. One of the things sent to new Saturn owners after purchase is a Welcome Kit. Starting with the 2008 Saturn OUTLOOK - and continuing forth with the AURA, SKY, ASTRA, and VUE - this is what the Kit will contain... This is but a small example of the exciting things on the horizon for Cheers and Gears, both things that were planned and amazing things that suddenly came up. I'd just like to thank everyone here at C&G - the other mods, the members, everybody - for sha…

In honor of Turkey Day, I thought I'd make a special 'UDG' thread. The premise here is simple, you will only be allowed to pick cars that are built overseas, and must make the trip to YOUR nation via water. Rules- 1)Production models only. 2)These are your only vehicles. 3)Maximum of 5 choices. 4)Nothing older than 20 MODEL YEARS OLD......a wildcard for fun. 5)Your picks must have been built OVERSEAS and transported across a body of water to reach you market.

Well I walked out of best buy after only being in there for 7 minutes and i walk to my parking spot to erupt in rage, anger, and disbelief. Broken glass and tire marks lined the yellow paint. The Caprice was stolen. I've had stuff stolen and broken into before but this was different. Value means nothing its all personal meaning. I almost shed a tear today. i mean its a 18 year old beater not a new smoking hot Charger SRT8. What sucks is tomorrow morning i leave for some well deserved vacation time. I planned on taking that car too. I cant wait to retire and move away from Michigan I'm tired of it all. it was at Gratiot and 13 mile not even a bad part of Roseville. sigh.. …

Yeah, super exciting topic, right? We all went out to brunch last Sunday and she wanted me to drive so I didn't want to pass up the chance (I had not driven it yet). It's an 04 Vue, with about 20k miles on it, that she purchased back in 06 upon our suggestion (yes, she only drives about 2 miles to work each day). I have to say I didn't think it drove that well. It felt slow, the CVT tranny was slightly annoying and anemic and the brakes felt really bad. I actually liked my 98 Jimmy better - which I wasn't expecting at all. I haven't driven a new 2008 or 09 Vue yet, but I hope for GM's sake that it drives better than her 2004. It's interesting, because the old …

There is a '71 Eldorado for sale in the Wal-Mart parking lot, $5000. Its red with a tan top and red leather interior. The body is really straight, the interior is in great shape, only problem I see is the rear window on the passenger side is down and I dont know why. I want it and I could probably talk my way into being permitted to buy it, but I'd have to find someone to give me a loan for at least part of it and someplace to store it.

It's been a while since we've polled on this...and we usually do it in poll form. So without a poll, pick ONE car color that you could apply to any and all of the cars you like. You can pick: ( a ) color, ( b ) basic depth - light, medium or dark, ( c ) metallic or enamel No need to describe your back-up...just ONE. My pick: Light Metallic Blue Why that choice? Both of the Cutlass Supremes and the Camaro I had were this color. I think it worked on all the cars I've owned, or would consider owning. Unfortunately, Glacier Blue Metallic was no longer a 2008 offering on LaCrosse, or I would have picked it. Why the poll? I went to my local B-(P)-C-GM and …

Vanity Fair Thousands upon thousands of government employees take to the streets to protest the bill. Here is Greece’s version of the Tea Party: tax collectors on the take, public-school teachers who don’t really teach, well-paid employees of bankrupt state railroads whose trains never run on time, state hospital workers bribed to buy overpriced supplies. Here they are, and here we are: a nation of people looking for anyone to blame but themselves. The Greek public-sector employees assemble themselves into units that resemble army platoons. In the middle of each unit are two or three rows of young men wielding truncheons disguised as flagpoles. Ski masks and gas masks …

By Forbes.com Crash results point out two not-so-surprising facts: cheap equals less safe, and you really, really need to order side airbags. The least-safe cars on the market are like the least-safe neighborhoods in a big city: affordable, but not pretty. With an average base price of $15,323 and no prices higher than $19,555, the six least-safe cars on the market come from companies Forbes.com does not ordinarily cover, such as Hyundai, Kia and Suzuki. Some models from these brands -- which are hardly for social climbers -- satisfy bargain hunters but require them to take their chances with personal safety. Hyundai's Elantra, Kia's Optima and Suzu…

Because it's that time of the month... or year, rather. One of those times is probably a better way to put it. It's something I frequently go though. To put it simply, I'm never satisfied; always looking for something refreshing and new (to me). It's essentially a flavor of the month affair, but in an automotive sense. If you were unable to grasp where I'm heading with this, I'll spell it out for you. I'm looking for another car, and rather seriously, at that. While I've found joy in my current vehicles, I find myself aspiring to greater offerings. One thing has always rang true and that is my love for amenities. Volkswagen uses incorrect information for their owner's manuals. Recently, the brake lights on the Golf went out. The first thing I did was look to the owner's manual to check the fuse. What do you know? The fuse it had listed for the brake lights was intact. That's odd... must be the brake light switch. After switching that out for one out of the Jetta, I knew something had to be up. I had a sheet I printed out previously for relay information and it also happened to have fuse information on it. I got it off of VW Vortex back in the day. I decide to check it to see what it says... Owner's Manual: VWV Print-out: Needless to say... the latter was correct...

Edmunds Evaluation: Ford Expedition v. Chevy Tahoe While the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe LT is a nice piece, with a much appreciated dashboard makeover and stout towing performance, the lack of a stowable, adult-friendly third-row seat and a higher price caused it to trail behind its arch-nemesis when the results were tallied. And even though this is an all-new truck, important subsurface chunks of it feel outdated. Yes, the unanimous judges' decision went to Ford's 2007 Expedition Limited, with its well-sorted steering and handling, controlled ride, very good towing performance and an adult-sized third-row seat that, importantly, folds flat into the floor. And with a sticke…

I was just wondering if anybody knows approximately what the 1999 Riviera Silver Arrows go for. I never see any up for sale and I know somebody who was wondering how much they go for generally. He actually has two of them in storage in mint condition. I think they are both under 40k miles. Anybody know how much they would be worth? The price guides tell me nothing. Thanks.

With my old Wal-mart special mountain bike creaking and groaning over every bump or root I hit on the trails, I figured it was time to retire the old goat and look for another bike. I set a rough limit of $500 on myself, because if I have to sped more than that on anything it won't be for a bike. Well, I got tired of looking at new bikes in bike shops that had junk components on them, and craigslist and ebay were yielding mostly clunkers. So, I figured, hey, I have wrenches, screwdrivers, and a couple of bike-specific tools, why not just build one from scratch? The end result: The specs: 1995 Giant Yukon frame RockShox front fork 44-33-22 crank 12x32 8 spe…

Linkypoo If it were a different color combo, I would want it more, but white over blue isn't exactly hot in my mind. On top of that, I dont think I could ever justify a 40 year old car with a 462 V8 as a daily driver. But damn it looks like its in good shape.

Our usual comparos and dream garage threads typically center around sport sedans and super cars, but these heavy hitters are exciting in their own right. One has been around a while now and is a familiar face- the Bentley Continental GT. The other is a newcomer- the S63 AMG, in drop top form in this case. C&D got the two together for a shootout recently, and I thought this would make for a fun 'WYR' thread. Here's the link- C&D: Bentley Conti GTC vs MB S63 AMG Cab So, which you rather have- Bentley Conti GTC V8 or MB S63 AMG Cabriolet

Tonight my friend called me up asking me some car advice. He drives a black 2002 Taurus SES with 65K miles and was offered a great deal on an '04 LeSabre Custom. The LeSabre only has 25K miles and is excellent shape; my honest opinion with him was that if you can get past the stigma these cars had, you'll be getting a larger, more powerful car with an excellent track record for reliability. I told him about the 3800 getting about 29 mpg on the highway, which is more than his Taurus gets. He's also a pretty tall guy (6'9"), and the Taurus is a little cramped for him. When he first called saying he was looking at trading in for a different car, I never expected him to…

Assuming that you can start from scratch, how would you formulate a platform for a third party? Just to get started: - repeal the Patriot act - eliminate income tax - legalize recreational drug use - have the next session of congress spend its time repealing laws instead of writing new ones - base the party on the real world expansion of personal freedom in everyday life. ( to reduce the ever-increasing big brotherism of the present). - the party would be entirely " faith blind" with religion not getting a place at the table. A truly secular philosophy of government.

If anyone noticed among the quibbling and the politics I decided to take a leave of absence for a little while. My reasons primarily being that the politic engulfed this site (which in and of itself is not a terrible thing), but brought out the ugly side of some members (a bad thing). It's pretty painful to watch just how petty and immature some people got, especially when they are normally level-headed. I decided that with enough issues at home to deal with the last thing I needed was to come to a place that was so disharmonious. I figured I'd comeback after election day to see if it would finally clear up, people would return to their former sense, and we could actua…

I love chicken wings. When I used to travel extensively for work, my friends turned me onto BW3s as they called it. Sometimes, it would get so crazy that we would eat 5 dinners a week at the place because it had all the young man's staple foods: wings beer onion rings salad I wish somebody would build one in Fresno.

Today is June 1st and the beginning of Pride Month. I feel like I can consider all of you my friends and I wanted to thank you for being allies through all the years we have been coming here. This website will be 21 years old in August this year. I've been at the helm for most of the time it has been around and have never been not open about who I am. Car culture has been a historically toxic, "macho" realm with no room for the LGBT crowd. I am proud that I am able to be who I am with you guys while some other sites have LGBT leadership that is unable to be themselves publicly. Cheers to all of you for being awesome. So in honor of Pride month, whether y…

Thanks for the hockey gold. I guess we just have to remind you where Crosby came from. That gives us a final total of 14 golds, the most ever won by a single country in the winter Olympics, beating the tied records of the Soviets and Norwegians.

...and look as good doing it? F-35 STOVL/VTOL takeoff & landing cycle Probably not. That's our new Joint Strike Fighter, Lockheed's XF-35. Here's a shorter 11-second takeoff clip. The thrust vectoring technology is nothing short of amazing and well beyond the still-impressive AV-8 Harrier.

What do you suppose you would find, if you were to do some landscaping in your yard? Well, as I've told you guys before, I live in the village of Ramsaytown, not actually Brookville... I just have a Brookville address. Ramsaytown, as I've said, was started as a coal mining town about 200 years ago. Between then and the early 1900s, it had reached its peak and was a full blown town, like Brookville. It had everything that a small town in that era consisted of. Well, shortly after, coal mining which was the heart of this town, basically tore it apart into what it is today. Houses were destroyed or moved and the landscape was torn up. All in the name of greed, from coal mi…

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...rticleId=115799 It looks like they went out of their way to drive it as softly as possible, to maximize fuel economy and make Toyota look good (or at least, not as bad) for once again delivering a vehicle that gets no where near it's promised gas mileage. Who drives at 60 mph on the expressway? That's below the speed limit on most interstate highways. Here in Ohio, most people whizz by at 70, and people say this is a state full of slow drivers. If they were testing - say - GM's new hybrid the Saturn Vue Green Line, I'd bet you money they would floor the acceleration at each traffic light, and push it at 80+ on the expresswa…

Yup, he just killed another one. It was a huge one this time, and he has a hole in his nose to show for it. It must have pissed him off when it bit him, because he just wouldn't stop chomping on it long after it was dead. I think he broke every bone in its body. Sure is interesting living with a couple of wolves.

Hey guys, just joined......I've lurked for a while but I finally joined! About me, 28 year old Washington DC girl. I work in marketing but I secretly want to be a car test driver! That'd be my dream job. I do have fun with the car I currently own, 05 Acura Tsx with navigation, but I'd love to try out tons of cars! I really want to be Warren Brown, he writes the reviews at the Washington Post and I get jealous everytime he gets a new car to drive!!!! Anyways, maybe you guys can help me get started.....we need a new family car for our soon to be family of three (expecting in March!) and the boy and I are trying to find the perfect smaller SUV. Suggestions? Glad…

Hey everybody, I'm taking a trip home to Ohio from New Jersey for the first weekend in December. I am really really interested in purchasing a Cruze Eco - probably an automatic, as my boyfriend doesn't know how to drive manual. I doubt I'd be able to find a Cruze Eco for rent, but I was looking to rent a Cruze, hopefully with the 1.4 turbo for my trip. Does anyone know which rental agency have Cruze's in their fleet? If I can't find a Cruze I'll just be taking the old Grand Prix for another trip! I am about 9-12 months away from looking for a new car, and I figured, a 550 mile stint behind the wheel would tell me how I like the Cruze, as far as comfort and travel…
