At the moment, it's the new Ford Focus ST. In Europe, it undercuts the pricing of the Golf GTI by a lot, so it could very well sell for $19,995 in the States. I still think the Golf is classier, but the Focus has more character and better performance. Sending the entire new Focus line-up here would be difficult, but not just the ST. It'd be one of those low-volume, image-building niche cars. Hmm, also, sending the Alfa 159 and Brera here would benefit the style-conscious. I'm doubtful it's as thorough as the 3, but it is cool, in the literal sense of cool. They could sell 'em at Maserati stores.

What car would you re-badge back? An Opel Omega sold in the US as the Cadillac Catera who's owner turned it back into an Opel "Re-badging" and "Badge Engineering" are 4-letter words amongst auto enthusiasts. Car companies do it to shave the cost of developing a whole new vehicle. Usually in the process, the brand identities of both the donor and recipient brands get muddled. In our example above, Cadillac was trying to shoot for the European entry luxury market by importing and re-badging the respected in its home market, but decidedly not luxury, Opel Omega. The Omega probably could have sold successfully on it's own merits had it not been sold at Cadillac deale…

1. Aspen----Why? I rode in one of these before, and noticed a shaky, plastic-filled ride. Hideous styling, Dodge Durango ripoff. *** 2. Compass----Again, Why? This, sir, is no Jeep! Ugh, what were they thinking, a mother's on-road Jeep? *** 3. Sebring----So-so styling, plastic-filled interior. Put simply enough: Not good enough. 4. Caliber----Not the prettiest Dodge ever, let me tell ya that. And how so is this a Neon replacement? My stomach growls in disgust at it. 5. PT Cruiser----Whoever wanted one already owns one. The styling was OK at its introduction, now it's just sad and pathetic. *** 6. Grand Caravan---- Not a Dodge. Just no. The Town & Country is bad i…

Very breezy and downright cold for June 21st, with partial high clouds. Like last year, we're all going to Dad's. We'll bring the food, he'll grill it. T-bones, big ol' potatoes, corn on the cob, salad, and some jalapenos to halve, top with sharp cheddar and grill (YUM). Sons, daughters and dads, what will you do today?

If you have the same publication that I got this trivia from, please sit this one out. Tom and Ray looked forward to Xmas visits from Aunt Bertha. She always gave them the same present; two pairs of hand-knitted wool socks. Just before Christmas, 1951, they learned Aunt Bertha would not be coming. A few days later she passed away. The official cause of death was very common in 1951, but Aunt Bertha may have been it's last victim. After that year, no one died of this particular affliction. What was it?

So, as it says, what did you do to your car today? Me? I gave the Firebird a good detailing. Washed and waxed to its maximum shine for the all the mullets to embrace.

I guess the first question should be: Do you listen to radio much anymore? With the advent of CDs, satellite radio, iPODS, etc., virtually everyone can create their very own radio station, personalized with no commercials. This means that the "basic" radio stations, especially those that have to air a lot of commercials, are losing listeners. For me, one who loves radio, that is kind of sad...especially since it is kinda cool to hear an older song on the radio that brings back memories, even if the whole world has forgotten. Yeah, it's cool to hear it on the iPOD, too, but when you hear it on the radio, you KNOW you aren't the only one hearing it at that given tim…

Just recently, I went to look at the fresh new car version of a car I have rented. I wanted to see the sticker, sit in it, check visibility, yada yada. The kid helping me was really nice and I didn't want to take up much of his time. He added, "It sounds like you really want to drive this car." I told him, "Not today." We unlocked it, I sat in it, turned on the engine, and got a feel for the controls. I also looked at the trunk. That was all I needed. I also took a brochure. As I'm about to leave, he says, "If you've got a couple of minutes, there's someone I'd like you to meet." *Cue to leave, in my book* I told him that I didn't have the time and headed f…

... when you obsess on something, something historically documented, and you uncover some facts that could easily 'color' the chain of events of said history? I've heard more than one supposed 'expert' voice their take on said history, and this has never been mentioned. It's secondary, not primary, but in my experience/observations over time, facts such as these tend to carry a lot more weight than one might assume. Certainly, it speaks toward motivation. I almost want to start up a website, because there is no authoritative source online to just 'give' it to...

Plus, it's tough to find styles I like that match the offset of the Intrepid. There's a lot of nice 5-spoke designs...the funny thing is many are stock designs off of Lexus vehicles as well as some Pontiacs. So I've come across these a few times and they match the specs of stock intrepid wheels nicely, the price is pretty good....and they looks pretty good I think...but I'm still not sure…

Since Camino LS6's thread referred to new cars and some of us have been mentioning used car preferences in that thread I thought this would be a fun thread for the used car shopper in us all. For me: Exterior must be in good shape. I little rust maybe and/or th expected imperfections are fine but the paint must overall be in good shape and still shine. It also can't have any large amounts of body damage bigger than a ding. Engine must be clean. No oil or dirt on the engine. Not only is it a sign of engien problems but also of poor maintenance. The interior must be in good shape, nothing broken and everything must work. It also must attractively designed. Materials are …

This is really hard for me... A few months ago my Grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told her she had about six months to live. When I last spoke with her around the end of December she told me she was undergoing chemotherapy and that it was helping. I'm not sure what to do or say...I want to call her but I don't know what to say. Now the Challenger! I saw it on the homepage. This is getting out of hand. Have auto designers lost their creativity to the point that they have to re-release such literal translations of old classics? Granted, the Camaro is the best looking of the lot. But the Mustang, the TBird and the Challenger? Way too similar. Heck, the Mustang's dash is an almost direct rip-off. I said NO. We need some fresh pony car designs.

With gas prices and some media bashing of people using SUV's only for single person commutes, I was curious to see how many people use SUV's for those uses. My vehicle is a Chevy Avalanche. I work at home but have the truck because I pull a 22' enclosed trailer with it. I only put on around 8k-10k per year since I work out of home. When me and the woman go out of town we take her 32mpg Alero. 50% of the miles on my Av are pulling a trailer or using for hauling misc. items. The other 50% of milage is random local commuting. Therefore my catagory is Mostly to tow/haul. If I didn't have the trailer to pull I would have a car in it's place.

GM Fast Lane Blog Cool StuffWhat Does Your Car Color Say About You? By Amy DeLong Training/Communications Coordinator So, maybe Kermit the Frog was right when he sang, "it’s not easy being green." According to DuPont Automotive rankings of the most popular automotive colors in North America, green ranks below 4 percent. As I look through the other findings, it appears things aren’t any better for green across the entire globe. Whether bright lime or more traditional pine, this color comes up, well, green with envy toward almost all other colors offered. For eight years, silver has claimed the No. 1 spot in the popularity studies followed by white and black and recent…

I collaborated with a friend on two songs recently while I try to figure out what I'm going to do about my home studio dilemma. We tracked down a bunch of loops, chopped them up, threw them back together, added a touch of WTF, and came up with what you hear here: http://0023916.bandcamp.com/ Not totally original, I don't think. Well, about as original as an art collage, which is to say there is originality in how things are used. We made due with what we had. What extinct or endangered body style do you want to see come back? February 13th, 2011 Drew Dowdell - CheersandGears.com Over the years body styles have come and gone. Oh sure, the basic trio of sedan, coupe, wagon are still around, but even those three had subtypes. The example shown above is from my personal favorite body style. The Cadillac Eldorado was a coupe, yes, but it was of a subtype called a Personal Luxury Coupe. This sub-type of coupe was marketed as it's own category in years past. Indeed in 1980, there were no less than 14 Personal Luxury Coupe models offered by just the Detroit three. By 1990, that number was down to about 8 and by 2000 only the Cad…

But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures. And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise. So what on Earth is going on? I just joined a gym, literally 5 minutes ago, online. It's only like 3 miles from my house. I stopped by there this morning and took a tour, led by a perky young lady. The place seems very low key, and I'm hoping it will help me keep fit over the winter. My biggest fear is looking like a complete doofus. Will the treadmill throw me off the back? Will I strangle myself when I drop the 25 pound barbell on my neck? I've never done anything like this before. I'm hoping it will be a good move. Does anyone else here belong to a gym? Do you have any funny or odd experiences you can share?

It has the infamous 318 Magnum V-8 -- which, by the way, 1999 was the last year for that engine in the 'Kota -- and t…

What a way to start a holiday..... I got word this morning that an old friend of mine was killed in an accident at home. I don't know the entire details. He is survived by his partner of 12+ years. What I'm thankful for, more than anything else, is the love and devotion from my partner Albert. Through the most trying of times he is there with me ready to do whatever needs to be done to get through... and he deserves a lot of credit for putting up with a grump like me. I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving holiday. I plan on laying low the rest of the week. Try not to fight too much.

I am thinking of... sending out some emails to a few local Chevy dealers asking for a price on a truck. (Excuse me in advance if I'm coming across as some kind of car hippie. :P ) Anybody ever wonder what would happen if every car company in the world combined to make one single company? GM, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, DCX, Hyundai, etc. co-existing and living in harmony. Would it end pissing matches among car enthusiasts? Would the auto industry become less of a raging battlefield? Would it improve international relations? (This may be a stretch.) Share your thoughts.

When I was unsure about my sexuality... well, more or less unwilling to admit that I was gay, I had my fair share of girlfriends. Well, as I looked in the local Newspaper, I notice one that I probably would have ended up going out with again if I had turned out to be straight. It was for the upcoming Laurel Queen Pageant for Brookville's annual Laurel Festival. My jaw dropped as I saw her pic and read about her... My, how I have ignored what a talented and beautiful woman she has grown into. But, I'm gay... and I'd have it no other way. Still... for the breeders... "Mekka D, is the 16 year old daughter of Scott and Honey D (rest edited out) of Brookville. She is a jun…

For the 1971 model year, Chevrolet introduced the handsome, economical, fun to drive Vega in 4 bodystyles: a two-door sedan, two-door hatchback, two-door panel delivery, and two-door wagon. The stylish little car looked like the perfect little brother to the second-generation Camaro. At first blush, it was a breakthrough, (along with the venerable Pinto and unique Gremlin) a uniquely American response to the charming VW Beetle and early Toyota and Datsun subcompacts. It should have been a contender... it could have ensured GM's market supremacy, already enjoyed in the mid-and full-size classes, in the burgeoning subcompact market. But a couple of major issues killed …

WHAT IF: GM had fully and properly engineered the Oldsmobile 5.7L diesel V8? Where would diesel powered vehicles be in terms of sales percentage today? I believe that Americans would have bought a lot more of them, which would have led to evolution of the technology for economy and performance. Diesel power would have owned a very large percentage of the U.S. market to this day, as it has in Europe. BUT... we all know how it was handled and were we are today. What do you all think?

It is no secret that currently, the US and the world are on a CUV binge. Every niche has been explored by numerable automakers to flush out every customer. Chevrolet is no different, and who can blame them for following the market? Which brings us to the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer. Billed by Chevrolet as Camaro-inspired, nevermind the internet clamor over using a revered SUV name from the past, the Blazer could have... SHOULD have, differentiated itself from a sea of CUV appliances by simply being built on the Alpha platform... like the Camaro. A LWB Alpha Blazer would have clearly shown Chevrolet's intent to make the vehicle stand out... and tie it in irrevocably to …

I was thinking of a scenario with regards to the auto industry and government regulation of it. WHAT IF... everything were the same, as far as world events... the gas crises, safety and emissions regulations all happened exactly as in real life... but CAFE, or any form of it, were never thought of? What would today's vehicle lineups look like? Would market forces have been such that things would look pretty much the same... or would the car world look completely different? If you have a few minutes, let us speculate...

What if Sylvester Stallone's metally-unstable Vietnam vet character was not named John Rambo, but instead Frankie Sparkles? Col. Trautman: God didn't make Frankie Sparkles, I made him! Col. We have the what irks you in a Co-Worker, now lwets try another exercise and see what irks all of us with our bosses or as I sometimes call them "authority figures". My main one is a boss who throws a temper tantrum like a 2 year old when things dont go their way. I have a few of them. They have gotten better with me since they know I dont do things to cause such behavior. If you cant handle the pressure of the job then maybe you shouldnt do it. Simple as that. A boss that cant seem to make a simple decision is another thing that annoys me. Everyone has had one of these. So lets have it.

There is always a PROBLEM here or there. "Office Space" LIVES! In my project area, there is ONLY one person I don't like. His problem is his meddlesome nature. First, he has to get involved in people's financial affairs (he can't manage his own). Then, he always does a "shaking of the finger" when a person gets time off during a crunch (when he's done the same thing). He always seems to be TOO interested in what others are doing, right down to making smart-ass comments about who is or isn't participating in what event at the forthcoming picnic. Except for a few people I like, I couldn't even REMOTELY tell you what others are into. Not only that, he's got the sam…

I haven't logged onto the boards much, if at all, the last few weeks...and it may be a while before I'm back regularly (for various reasons), but it has been an interesting summer...one highlight being the July 26 multi-board/group gathering in Elgin: http://pics.projectmonte.com/album/12498 And, even though I've wondered lately after a rough month of disappointments/frustrations, I still think it IS about the people you meet and come to know.... So...it is kinda cool to read that others seem to agree: http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/courier...ILEY_S1.article It's just too bad more people don't realize this...or realize it too late...instead focusing on detail…

I wonder what people feel what GM lacks most, is it powertrain, fit/finish, comfort features or looks(inside and out). I feel personally that currently they are lacking in plain looks, they are well engineered but the looks of the new stuff is lame.. most still look cheap or give me the feeling that I am in something old!

If you look closely, you'll see Canada and England follow closely so the real reason must be related to speaking English. Notice also, that Hungary is the only nation loosing weight, in all irony... But what is really to blame...a low level of physical activity, Genetically modified foods or...? Your thoughts please, gentlemen! My kids were behind a fat guy at MacDonalds the other day, who spent over $100 on food for himself, his wife and two children. And my eleven year old daughter Christina and I went to Bob Evans...teenage girl in the booth next to us was HUGE...I'm talking half the size of our MINI...and after she ate a dozen Chocolate chip cookies there for des…

Sometimes I don't feel right talking general automotive discussion in The Lounge. Does it go in the kinda general part of The Other Guys? Is the general car discussion intended to be here? Or is it likely we should start a new sub-forum for general car discussion (topics that aren't specific to one brand or otherwise don't fit other forums, but don't fit the tone of the Lounge)? To me The Lounge seems more for social topics than anything automotive. Mods, Admins, other regular posters, what say you?

There's a car that I've seen twice in my life..It's from the 90's I think. Above the beltline is all glass...There are windows within the windows...if that makes sense. From what I remember, the whole top of the car is glass(safety issues?). Anyone have any idea? Here's my "extremely well" drawn diagram:

Tell me what that one political issue is that is near and dear to your heart. The one that would get you involved enough to support a candidate on that issue alone. Remember just pick your main one. For me it's Illegal Immigration. Shut down the Southern border of the USA, and I don't care if you have to put a Berlin style wall up manned with soldiers, with orders to Shoot to Kill. Come in the legal way, no problem! Sneak across the border, well then you take your chances with the wall and the guns.

For the car you drive the most (your primary vehicle), which automaker does it belong to? I don't think we've had an actual poll of this before, but I was kinda interested to see how many members of C&G actually drive GM cars and trucks.

I thought an interesting topic would be come up with the best car throughout history from the primary GM divisions, Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Oldsmobile. Saturn was pretty short lived, so not too many cars to choose from there. It should either be a game changer, or car way ahead of its time or maybe just best best car that brand ever made or that you want want to see return. I'll start with my nominations. Buick: 1987 GNX It is fast by today's standards, for 1987 it was insane, and menacing looking in black. Chevrolet: 1969 Camaro and 1963 split window Corvette Stingray. Cadillac: 1953 Eldorado GMC: 1937 to current Suburban/Yukon XL Since th…

Is it 1973 because of the catalytic converters? Maybe 1977, with the beginning of the boxy styling craze (including rectangular headlights)? Is it somewhere in the 80s, with the switch to fuel injection and the death of chrome bumpers? Or is it the 90s, when all these transitions were complete and every car was officially "computerized" (with more crapola to come)? Can the cutoff year slide into more recent years? Or did one prick just say "it stops at the 50s!" and it just is what it is and will be for all time?

Got into an arguement (okay, spirited discussion) with an Idiot about imported cars at a Pizza resteraunt the other night that made me spit my pepperoni about half way across the room. Clueless guy wanted to argue that the Corvette was an import because Zora Arkus Duntov wasn't a natural born American... What is the dumbest thing you have ever heard in a discussion about cars? Well as most of you know, I live in Delaware, but I don't buy my new cars here, I go to Elkton, Maryland and buy my cars from Anchor Pontiac. They are a great dealership that treats you like family and they go the extra mile. Oh from where I live I can be in 3 different states in about 15 minutes, so going to Maryland is no big deal. Maybe we could use this list if our C&G members find themselves out of state and in need of a reliable dealership to go to. Cheers! My dealer's website: http://www.anchorpontiac.com/en_US/

This should raise some debate around here, and I am interested to see if we could come to any kind of concensus. What do you think captivates the essence of a particular decade of design? Is there a particular model that comes to mind when you think of the '70s, for example? I will submit the following picture of an '82 Cutlass coupe as my thought of a quintessential '80s design. Let's hear those comments!

I can not for the life of me figure out what this Pontiac is. I've narrowed it down to a '66, '67, or '68 model and I'm leaning toward a Catalina or possibly a Tempest, but every one has different headlights and taillights from this one. How many models did Pontiac have in the 60s?? I've counted GTO, Tempest, Firebird, Catalina, Beaumont, Laurentian, Bonneville, Grand Prix, Ventura, Parisienne, Strato Chief and probably others I'm forgetting. This is driving me nuts! The pics
