I do an awful lot of thinkin' about cars throughout the course of my day.... I'm always boring Marcia with my "if I ever have the money..." and "wouldn't it be cool if..." type comments about cars. Anyway I just think there are many important questions out there that I need to answer during the course of my life. Here's a short list off the top of my head, thirteen to be exact since it's a lucky number. You are about to enter the empty space known only as: "Sixty8Panther's Brain" 1. How much money will it take to realize my dream of having a 30s Hot Rod powered by a radial aircraft engine? …

EPA estimated fuel economy: Infinity Zero emissions compliant With it going up to 65 today, I figured it'd be a good day to ride into work. It's about 7 miles each way from my front door to my workplace. I'm not the least bit tired, and it'll only get easier when I mount a set of road bike wheels, tires, and rear sprockets onto it. Best part is, I saved 1/16 of a tank and pushed back filling up the Cobalt till tomorrow. Want to do something about your gas bills? Use a bike for your short-distance errands (at least those that don't involve perishable foods).

Here's the scene: It is 59 degrees outside and I decide to take Arkus with me to the local Wawa. I head down RT 252 toward my destination behind a host of fools that think pacing the car next to you constitiutes safe driving. After a frustrating, if mercifully short, drive I arrive at my destination. I always park right in front of the building so that Arkus can see me while I'm inside, which I proceed to do. I raise the passenger window to a crack of just over an inch so that Arkus can't push the window out of its track (again), and crack my window about half of an inch. So I go inside and order my breakfast sandwiches and prepare my coffee. when the sandwiches are…

We all have those movies we've seen several times over. Here's my list: James Bond movies Diamonds Are Forever - 11x On Her Majesty's Secret Service - about 7x Live and Let Die - about 7 x Moonraker - about 7 x For Your Eyes Only - about 7 x View To a Kill - about 4 x The World is Not Enough - approx 4 x Eddie Murphy Beverly Hills Cop - the original - 5 x (opening chase scene only - forward and reverse - about 20x) Trading Places - about 5 x Other Body Heat - 9x - I had to see it a second time to unravel the intricacy of the plot...and then I got hooked. Don't leave the room/theater in the last 15 minutes for the "yearbook scene." Which movies qualify you a…

Every once in a while, I get a rental car that is equipped with a sunroof. This happens when the MC is a 3.9 LT upgrade or a GP with the Supercharger (last year) and just this weekend in a Mercury Milan Premier. It was very nice driving the car around and seeing the stars through the glass sunroof. It was also nice having it open, sticking my hand up and catching the cool breezes off the coast. My biggest objection is that I hear they tend to leak. Also, if the power accessory fails, is that an expensive fix? Your experiences?

I'm sure you all have read O. C.'s thread "So my boyfriend is moving in ..." many of you gave great insight to his plight. So my question is this, How many of you that have committed to another person, has ever cheated on that person? By cheating I mean had sexual relations, with another person, that wasn't the one you committed to? If you have, did you own up to it, or will you take that secret to the grave? I will say this for me, before I got married, I was the biggest male whore on the planet, after I got married I have not cheated "done the dirty deed as it were with someone other than my wife", doesn't mean I have not thought about it, talk about it, or even dre…

Here's the situation: Recently my catalytic converter started to go. It's made me start thinking... the car is 15 years old, runs VERY well, but there are a million and one "little" things wrong with it, and the body isn't in the best shape--the paint job is HORRIBLE, and there are some signs of rust in the wheel wells as well as around the door frames. The interior gets wet when it rains because seals are going, and the dash is cracked in half from when my radio was ripped out. The fuel gauge isn't accurate, the transmission gauge isn't either (not that it matters, you know what gear you're in by how many clicks you shift the stalk). Things in the trunk get wet and …

So, it's no secret that I tend to have... cravings for certain cars at certain times. I was once wanted a Fiero and nothing else. Then I was stuck on 240SX's. Then came Miatas. However, those were all similar in that they were sporty and small. But lately... namely since I've bought my Millenia, I've been getting into mid to large sized luxury sedans. You could say I just love so many different cars (and obviously don't have a fit whether they're domestic or not). But this is turning into what my next purchase may be. It's been obvious that I'm more than bored with my Milly. Its reliable, but due to the mileage, its not perfect. There's alot that needs to be done... fro…

I have been looking at both a new truck or getting a used 4x4 and saving up a bigger down payment. This would give me a toy in the future when I get a new truck. I found a 2002 Land Rover Discovery that looks good. The dealer was closed today so I haven't heard the engine or taken a test drive yet. I am curious about opinions especially from anyone who might have owned or does own a Land Rover. I am looking for good and bad opinions so anything goes.

My daughter will be 16 on June 23rd. Before you say it SuperSport623, I know it's your birthday too, that only makes my heartburn that much worse. I told my daughter that I would not be home on her birthday because I will be working out of the country and because of that I told her to pick something she really wanted for her birthday and I would get it for her (foolish me). Who knew she would ask to see the Jonas Brothers in concert with 3 of her friends and she wants me to drive them there and go to the concert but not sit to close to them. This concert is in Pennsylvania (Yankee Land) in the summer, which means a trip back home to the USA (two airline tickets), and al…

I normally post “Cheers and Jeers,” my end-of-year wrap-up post late on New Year’s Eve or early New Year’s Day. This year, I found myself in the hospital for most of the past week as my first child was born at the end of the year in circumstances that were later and more difficult than expected, and hence this post had to wait a week until mom and baby daughter were resting well at home, and they are doing fine now. So on with the festivities, and I hope everybody has been having a Happy New Year so far. Twenty ten was a year that continued to be filled with doom and gloom, with occasional peeks of sunshine to be smothered with dark gray clouds again as the jobless rec…

With all the (some would argue: overblown) current [no pun intended] attention on electric vehicles, might be interesting to acknowledge some past efforts. In the very early days of the industry, they met with considerable success, at the detriment to gasoline-powered vehicles, sales-wise. But there were a whole slew of occasional proposals, some which were merely concepts, some which were intended to but never saw production, others which eked out a small run. I'm sure some of you are aware that from time-to-time GM performance parts develops packages for past models to increase performance legally. The kits meet all federal requirements just as the original equiptment did. Installling them voilates no regulations as they are engineered by the OEM to meet all standards. My idea is that GM (and all OEMs for that matter) should develop retrofit kits of this sort to allow existing cars and trucks to run on alternative fuels. This would further the cause of getting alternative fuel infrastructure up and running by expanding the customer base much faster. The government could help by removing any regulatory roadblocks that migh…

So the wife and I began to do some car shopping, basically test driving the cars she's interested it to see what she thinks. Here's the list of cars she's test driven in the past two weeks: 1. Buick LaCrosse FWD Leather (her favorite so far) 2. Buick Regal FWD (she's not a fan, I like it! The 2.0L turbo 4 cyl is a rocket engine in this car) 3. Buick Verano Leather (too small for both of us, nice car, just not her cup of tea) 4. Buick Encore FWD Leather (surprisingly, she's no longer interested in the Encore, likes the exterior look but not the interior styling) 5. Chevy Impala 2LT (her second favorite, was quite impressed with the amount of features for the price) …

Question for C&Gers. How do you personally define being a man? Just read an interesting book about boys which had as a Thesis that boys today lack positive male role models and have trouble defining what it means to be a man. The book got me thinking. So: How do you define being a man? To our younger members-do you find a lack of older men that you look up to? Do you agree or disagree with the idea that there are few positive male role models? Do you think todays definition of manhood is different than your fathers? To our gay members-a serious question-how do young gay teens/young gay adults adjust to manhood? Do you think manhood is defined differentl…

I'm sick.. quite sick. I think everything is failing me at once. I went to the doctor yesterday after leaving work at lunch because I felt like major crap. Terribly sore throat and back, worst headache I've had in a long time, sore roof of my mouth (cut it open eating a burger Sunday night), swollen lymph nodes in my neck. Fun stuff. So the doc tells me I've got a throat infection, not strep but just like it. Along with strained muscles in my lower back (no idea how I did that). I get put on prescription meds (wow, I don't know if I've ever had to say that other than a couple other times in my life), and I'm feeling much better. Except for the fact that the preexistin…

We have come to an agreement on how to handle political threads on C&G. For at least this political season, such threads will be allowed with the following caveats. 1. Any thread will have to maintain the same level of civility with or without political discussion. 2. No campaigning - period. 3. Any overt nastiness will lead to the topic being locked or deleted. 4. Any thread that has politics as its topic must only be posted in the lounge. 5. We reserve the right to re-invoke Rule #2 if things get out of hand. 6. All political threads must be clearly indentified as such in the title or subtitle. 7. Comment on the candidates, issues, or parties - not th…

So I've been hit twice by the curse in two weeks.... My son has wrecked the Miata TWICE. First time, he ran off a dark road when he missed a curve...hit a concrete culvert and ripped the front suspension out from under the car as he entered a bean field, broke the motor mounts, and twisted the cradle. All right y'all. I've gotta lay something out here. I was out and about tonight without the wife or the little girl (they were at wife' dance practice). I'm cruising around in the Impala, watching it storm (tornado warning, golf ball sized hail, etc), and thinking of dinner. I get to a local chinese restaurant and there are four guys standing around in the parking lot, I pay them no huge amount of attention, go in, eat and come out. Get back to my car, they come over and start giving me the evil eye. I'm normally not one to have a horribly short temper, but today wasn't a good day at work, so I wasn't in the best of moods. Every Friday, a group of us at work head out for lunch at a nearby steakhouse. Recently, a new Chili's has opened near our work, and we had talked about trying it. Last Friday, as we walked out to the parking lot to head out ("my" guy Ryan and another friend), we discussed where we would go. The other friend and I wanted to go to Chili's, Ryan didn't want to, but he reluctantly agreed we would meet at Chili's, along with two other coworkers. I told Ryan I had to go to the bank, but would meet them at Chili's and I took off in my truck while they waited for the other 2 guys. We had the Engineering Employment EXPO over the past three days here at U of I, and I talked to several different companies. The only three automotive companies that were there though were Honda, Toyota, and Ford. I talked to all three, but Honda said they don't hire anyone who doesn't have at least a status of sophomore, and Ford said it was hard to get a job as a freshman. Toyota, however, seemed to be pretty interested in anyone who wanted to go into the Automotive field. GM didn't come for some reason (even though their website said they were coming) so obviously I didn't get to talk to anyone from GM. I also talked to Cummins (seemed somewhat interested), Caterpill…

Minicars have stepped up their game in recent years. If you were looking at this class for your next new vehicle, which one would you choose? Fiat 500? Scion iQ? (done after the '15 model year) Chevy Spark? Ford Fiesta? Honda Fit? Smart FourTwo? Any others you can think of in this class? I think I would have to go with the 2016 Chevy Spark 2LT, with manual transmission, in Titanium or Kalamata. The new Spark has grown up big time, with a more mature look inside and out, and some unexpected features for this class. I expect some will say "buy something bigger that is a few years old", or "I'd rather walk than drive any minicar", but just for the sak…

I prolly carry too much baggage from the high school years. For EX, I recently looked at the FB profile of a guy I had a cross-room brawl with in high school, and I still feel dislike toward him, even tho the 'statute of limitations' has long ago run out on that. OTOH, as I randomly look up people I used to know from HS, I feel better & better about my current state of self-preservation. Many of the 'beautiful people' have fallen so hard. Life can be a harsh mistress, so the saying goes. Is it wrong to take a teaspoon of glee from that??

It looks like a bunch of us have bought new cars lately and as we get closer to a big event, I would like to include our own purchases in a write up I'm going to publish. So if you would please: List any and all new vehicles purchased while being a member of C&G. Certified Pre-Owned from the same manufacturer's dealer is cool too, just mark the car with (CPO). If you have a family/friend member that bought a new car and selected partially from your recommendation, include that car too and include the relationship to you. For example: Myself 2004 Cadillac CTS (New) Mother 2009 Ford F-150 King Ranch (CPO) Co-Worker 2005 Pontiac Vibe (New)

My oldest son has been discharged from the USMC and is now back home. He's looking for employment in the law enforcement field and will need basic transportation. His mom and I are trying to help him get on his feet and have about $2k to spend on a car. Prior to entering the USMC in January, 2013, he had a 1998 Buick Regal LS that he loved. He asked me to find him another Buick Regal, if possible. I also found a 2002 Saturn SL2 nearby. Yes, I'm bored again. Sorry. Life without ABS. As you may know, the ABS on my Grand Am GT doesn't work. I haven't had any problems for the past few months that I've been driving it. That is until the past week or so... but first I'm going to tell you about a related issue. My front tires. Back around the middle of summer, I had my rear tires replaced. The rear were worthless with holes, leaks, and very little thread. The front, however, were still in great condition. Over half of its thread left. They gripped better than the new ones put on the rears. So, my dad left them alone and on the front. Ofcourse, as some may know, the roads around my house s…

It’s that time of year again! Here’s the 5th anniversary edition of the list of the best and worst of all things C&G and GM over the past year. Before we all relive these moments, here’s a mention of some of the more significant events that occurred in the outside world: The war in Iraq sadly continued to plod on without any seeming kind of direction. In the U.S. elections, control of the Senate turned on the word “macaca” along with a return to the concept of checks and balances in government. The year ended with the passing of the 38th President and the execution of a ruthless dictator. On this board, the year began with the shocking passing of Chief. GM intr…

Last Saturday for lunch I went and checked out a new sushi restaurant in town. I like my sushi spicy, so when I spotted a three-roll spicy combo on the menu, I knew what I wanted. Except... one of the rolls was octopus, and I am scared of octopus. Tuna and salmon are lovely though. I asked the lady if I could substitute an extra salmon roll for the octopus. She said, in a heavy accent, "no substitution". I reluctantly said "OK", and she went up to the bar and turned in my order. Two minutes later she came back to my table and said "sorry, we out of octopus, is OK two tuna roll?" WTF?

Yep, another accident, this time involving a plane. The force of the impact was strong enough to push the motor back and crack the firewall in several places.

JUST KIDDING! Actually yesterday I witnessed a miracle. I went out in the morning and got some "Marvell's Mystery Oil" and two sets of spare keys made for the Super 88. When I came home there were some sun showers and then it got overcast. I was on the fence about weather or not to work on the car finally. After about 25 minutes I have the 2-4-6-8 valve cover off and I pour some of the Mystery Oil on #2 & 8 cylinders. Those two supposedly have no compression. I call my friend Kevin outside. (he was talking to Marcia inside) I had him crank the car with the valve cover off so I can see what's what. The #2/4/6/8 spark plugs have no wires, and as he c…

I have a friend nice lady but somewhat well dingy I would say and she is getting new or slightly used luxury CUV/SUV. She has enlisted my help to help her look and decide upon one. She basically has narrowed it down to four CUV's... I suggested the Lincoln MKX (said no) Caddy SRX (said no) and also the Buick Enclave (said no and it was too big). My friend likes image and the Cadillac nor Buickish/Lincoln image prolly appeal to her. Can't make her buy one. The options... Given this list what would you guys suggest/buy for yourself if you had too in order... -2007-2008 Lexus RX-400H AWD -2007-2008 Lexus RX-350 AWD -2007-2008 Porsche Cayenne V6 AWD -2007-2008 Aud…

After a year with my Colorado I am ready to get something with more comfort and power. I have been looking at getting a LT Crew cab 4x4, I am not sure if the 6.0 is worth the extra money. I know people who say the 5.3 has more than enough but a few ppl who have the 6.0 and say they would never have the 5.3. I guess the question is: What will I miss more, the extra couple grand or the extra 52 HP?

Does anyone know what 2014 GMC Sierra is on display at the Chicago Auto Show? The Philadelphia Auto Show had a Stealh Gray Metallic on display, while mystik posted a Quicksilver one on display at the Houston Auto Show. I believe an Onxy Black All Terrain Sierra was on display at the NAIAS, not sure if any other colors were shown there.

I mentioned in the "I can only imagine" thread that I'd love to get a home on the outskirts of town or in the country or in a small town. I've lived "city life" (well, between Chicago-type city life and small town life, anyway) all of my life, except for when I was in college ... and the short time I lived in Nashville TN in 1996. I know some think it nuts to live in a small town, but the following, which was given to me by a family friend years ago, gives some of the reasons why I'd like to live in a small town. Course, room for a big garage ... and the idea of not having many "city ordinances" to contend with ... are big factors as well ... he he.... Life in a small…

My local (literally right around the corner from where I live), small-time Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealer is closing per GM, at least that's what I was told today by the business manager. About a month ago, I noticed the inventory of older cars & trucks stored in the back of the dealership were missing. Then I noticed the used car inventory became smaller and smaller each passing week; the new vehicle inventory didn't seem to get any larger either (I noticed that the 4 G8 GT sedans they received apparently are their last new car deliveries; only one sold, the other 3 are still there with AMP stickers on them for $3k each ). Then on Saturday as I was passing the dealer…

Does your viewpoint on whether or not GM should get a bailout have to do with your love for GM products or do you truly think it will be better for the automobile sector and the economy of 300+ million people? I still havent heard all the sides but im leaning to letting the private enterprise deal with its problems with private enterprise funds. What about yourself?

If you've been wondering what's been happening with this section, I apologize. I have been extremely busy as of late between work and class obiligations. However, now that classes are out of the way for the summer, I'll have more free time to work on the RR (among other things). The next RR will be up by this weekend with the June edition coming at its regularly scheduled time. Thanks for understanding.

Well, I zipped down 95 yesterday afternoon to DC to see that awesome new Ang Lee movie about cowboys. Love the movie, want to see it again, sooo beautiful, yet so gutwrenching. Lots of interesting old pickup trucks in the movie, for those interested. The story spans about 20 years, and starts off with both guys driving beatup old 1950's GMCs... then they move on to 1960's and 70's Fords. Finally, we see Jack in a late 70's Chevy crewcab dually. So, that was one easy New Year's resolution... to see Brokeback Mountain. I know some of you guys would never see it because of the subject matter, and that's ok, but if your wife or girlfriend a…

1998 Camaro for those of you not in the know. 3.8L "3800 Series II." Automatic Transmission. Every piece of the motor is apart from the other, after a major knocking noise started to occur. This is what we've found: A few worn main bearings A few worn rod bearings One completely torn up rod bearing (looks like a rodent got to it or something) A couple scratched/scarred pistons and connecting rods because of the bearings The "bearing" (or whatever it's called) on the crankshaft for Cylinder One is worn almost flush with the ridge that's supposed to be there The thing that sucks the oil up is totally full of metal shavings and garbage And this is only after 55,000 miles.…

Japan Mulls Legality of N. Korea Strike By MARI YAMAGUCHI AP TOKYO (AP) - Japan said Monday it was considering whether a pre-emptive strike on the North's missile bases would violate its constitution, signaling a hardening stance ahead of a possible U.N. Security Council vote on Tokyo's proposal for sanctions against the regime. Japan was badly rattled by North Korea's missile tests last week, and several government officials openly discussed whether the country ought to take steps to better defend itself, including setting up the legal framework to allow Tokyo to launch a pre-emptive strike against Northern missile sites. "If we accept that there is no other option …

Any of the mods have the scoop or are we still "flying blind" on this topic? Maybe he bought that Jaguar after all and ended up in the poor-house as a result of the repair bills, or perhaos mental hospital for same basic root causes? I've got a few Jaguar hood ornaments amongst the hundreds of emblems I've collected over the years. That's all the Jaguar I need. I'd love to see my old '76 LeSabre featured in the "Project Car Chronicles". Saddly I do not even know if Fly still owns the car.

As I was sitting in Mickey D's this evening being a bad boy eating my quarter pounder, I watched to see who would leave the restaurant and hop in a gray, base model Honda Fit in the parking lot. It was an 80-year-old lady, 95 pounds at most, with a huge hairdo, accompanied by her p.i.m.p., a dude who was at least 80 and walking pretty slowly. Has the "Fit is Go!" ad campaign fallen on (nearly) deaf ears? Is every "hip, young" Japanese car doomed to congregate at Friday Night Bingo at the VFW? I find this phenomenon pretty amusing.

This weekend I went and did some shopping for some wheels and I finally got some. 1972 Piper 2+2 140D I'm still in the process for my license. I'm having the owner fly it down to a local airport and im going to have it cleaned inspected and fixed up at Selfridge and see if i can get some hook ups and store it there for free, but we will see. I was at the airport at the right time and i was looking at it and the owner walked up and said it was for sale. We talked and I said I would fill it up if he took me for a ride and we flew around for a couple of hours and the plane seems strong for a 140 and really easy to fly so I bought it for abo…

It's been a while since we've polled on this...and we usually do it in poll form. So without a poll, pick ONE car color that you could apply to any and all of the cars you like. You can pick: ( a ) color, ( b ) basic depth - light, medium or dark, ( c ) metallic or enamel No need to describe your back-up...just ONE. My pick: Light Metallic Blue Why that choice? Both of the Cutlass Supremes and the Camaro I had were this color. I think it worked on all the cars I've owned, or would consider owning. Unfortunately, Glacier Blue Metallic was no longer a 2008 offering on LaCrosse, or I would have picked it. Why the poll? I went to my local B-(P)-C-GM and …

Nissan Motor,Japan's third-biggest automaker,is preparing to produce fuel effcient small vehicles for Chrysler, taking a different route to enhance its presence in the American market despite concern about a slowdown. The two auto firms are in the final stages of negotiation on a deal for Nissan to supply Chrysler with small cars models with an engine displacement of around 1.8 liters,Japanese broadcaster NHK reported on Thursday. The pact is expected to boost Nissan's sales in the U.S market, and to help Chrysler make a turnaround from its recent weakness, attributed in part to an overdependence on light truck sales, the report said.A Nissan spokeswoman confirmed the …
