I'm in the midst of reading Jim Hinckley's book, _Route 66 Backroads_, to prepare and plan this year's Route 66 Drive, September 5-16. I'm learning a lot about different areas in several states that probably should be explored ... when I have time. I'm also beginning to wish I could take more time for the Route 66 Drive...and, for that matter, road trips in general.... As I read the book further, I wonder what else is "out there" of interest to see in various areas. Our own "backyard" has plenty "treasures" to explore ... many more than we have time to see. This became apparent when I saw the PBS specials on Route 66 and the Lincoln Highway; researched other famous …

Last year, I posed these queries: What do YOU consider to be "should see" areas/places in your home state? What would you tell travelers to check out, if they have the time, as they drive through your state? What "obscure" and "out of the way" places in your home state come to mind? In August, I posted the answers received. Since then, I've received additional suggestions. Below is the newest compilation of answers ... which may prove that you find another part of yourself in every state. This is not a "complete" list and may not be 100% accurate; however, it is an excellent start to planning a vacation or road trip...ENJOY! ALABAMA Battleship Alabama Huntsville…

I live in a colonial style 4 bedroom two story house, the kind you find all over the midwest in Suburbia....anyhow... I've got hardwood flooring in the living room. Kitchen cabinets are Oak, but I got a good deal on Maple flooring, so I put down maple. I don't have a formal dining room, but I do have a nice, large living room. Here is my question. Stylewise, is it okay or just plain wrong to put down a different style, species, or color of wood in other rooms in the house? Part of me feels like its wearing one blue sock and one red sock style wise...and part of me loves wood and wants to put down a few different kinds of flooring. The rest of the trim in the hou…

My GF's brother is the not so proud owner of a previous gen Civic. A year or so back they had a major recall over the headlights just cutting off in the middle of a commute. (I don't remember seeing that one in the mainstream press) He was a good lil sheep and took his car in for the needed repairs. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago when he and his girlfriend are driving home from work one night and his headlights just randomly cut off. He takes it into the dealership again and they say: 1) The recall was never performed on the car in the first place (Umm, what?) 2) Because the car is out of warranty they charge him $187 for the new switch. And 3) If he wants to get his m…

In all the complaining about GM have cheap interiors, I decided to check out hondas. We all wonder why they never complain about the civics digital speedo, when GM was blasted for using digital dashes. But did you know their stock stereo is 2 different colors and one of the colors doesn't even match the interior at any point? Compare that too a black tie stereo in the Cobalt. On the other hand, atleast you can replace the stereo in the civic unlike the accord.

So today around 2pm I gave XP a ride to work after he put the Cutlass on my front lawn with a for sale sign. We notice that there's a '97/'98 Honda Accord in the parking lot at Dounkin Donuts in Drum Hill Chelmsford with what looks like a broken tie-rod, I pulled in to investigate and this is what I saw. I laughed and took the photos as I asked the kid WTF happened, he says "it just let go as I turned the wheel... the axle slipped right out & the suspension just snapped" As I walked away I said lound enough for him to hear... "Gotta love those Hondas, next time go for RWD." Then I got inside my RWD Q45 and drove away laughing my @$$ off as I told …

I couldn't help but notice Honda's advertisements for the Odyssey- stuff like "The Van is BACK" and "Respect the Van" along with all of the crazy psychadelic colours and whatnots and think to myself, either Honda is trying to appeal to new "hippies", people of the 1960's/`70's, or of course, nothing like the classic clam bake in a van, eh? Let's get one of those. Any other thoughts?

Well it was due to come up sooner or later...another retarded has blessed the internet with one of the dumbest posts in history, and so the hilarity must be shared thought the interwebs. Ricer was street racin' yo! Going 90mph. Cop pulled him over and gave him a break by fining him for driving too slow. Ricer boy doesn't get that he got off easy, posts on the internet what he did and what happened, and that he plans to fight it. Then a cop responds to him... I am laughing my ass off! :rotflmao: x1000 http://www.orlandoforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126522

I've looked though a hood ornament for most of the time I've been driving. I think my Regal coupe was the last model to have a hood ornament. It seems to go with the overall car. Now they are gone. Even on most Caddies. Do you think they should have bitten the dust? Should they partially come back? What do you think?

Apparently, Dubois is riddled with people who can't properly park a vehicle. Whether this is out of inability or just sheer laziness remains to be seen... This CRV driver just left it parked halfway on the lane, partially in two separate Handicapped spaces. This Explorer driver wasn't satisfied with a single parking spot and clearly needed all four spaces. To be fair, this guy was still in his vehicle... and happened to be a 2015 Tahoe with M plates. The real question is why he was in Dubois, of all places...

Hot August Nights (and my vacation) is just over a month away and I for one can't wait. This year they raised the limit from 5000 to 5500 cars in the show and there are always thousands more that show up. Tammy and I will be heading south on July 30th with a bunch of other PNWCC members. So far we have 67, 68, & 69 Camaros, a 71 Chevelle, a 72 Skylark and who knows what else cruising down. We should have a couple of old Vettes as well in the convoy. Is anyone else planning on heading to Reno for this?

Setting the record for world's fastest gasoline-powered land vehicle, the 1,900 HP Spectre Performance Infidel is powered by a twin-turbo 1970s Cadillac punched out to 529 CI. LSR cars typically run some sort of ethanol blend or nitromethane fuel for maximum power, while the maximum outright speeds are achieved by jet-powered, rather than wheel-driven vehicles. Thrust SSC holds the current outright land speed record of 763 MPH while the 458.4 MPH wheel-driven record is held by the Vesco Turbonator. The Iron-block cadillac engine uses its original cast iron crank and achieved its record during its first outing on the salt and after only 3 runs. In a reversal of conv…

At this point in time, I'm nowhere near in the position to buy a house but I thought I'd take a look at some places I'd definitely like to live in one day. This is my current favorite: This is pretty much my ideal house. I got home the other day after work and fed my neighbor's cat out back on the deck. My neighbor is sitting on his deck, indian style, getting a herr cut from his wife and he says... We're a Toyota family now" (he's the guy who bought the xB I posted about a while back). Sure enough... a black Yaris 3 door is in their driveway. He says to me, "we think you should get one." Looks like it might be car buying time for me again over the summer... I'm a 19 yr old university student though so I don't have a huge budget... I'll probably get something between $4000 and $6500 Canadian... I've been looking around and have seen some decent prices on Cherokees, Impalas, Monte Carlos, Intrigues, Lincolns... etc. How are older Caddy Devilles? I asked a while back about the 89-91ish generation and most people told me to generally avoid them. What about the 94 bodystyle? There are great deals on these to, and they are definitely nice cars... I'm just not sure if they'd be a headache to own or not .

I have a coworker and my boss, both were troubled by Cavaliers and swear that they won't get another American car. How would it be possible to talk them back into a domestic? My co-worker has a '94 Cavalier (looks like a VL sedan) that dies often on her, and has now primarily drives a Mazda3. My boss has a '98 Cavalier Z24. Both of them are very unhappy about the reliability of the cars. What's worse, my boss was actually talked away from the Cobalt by her neighbour, who appears to work at GM. I've seen this case alot, too. And usually the same suspects as well: J-bodies.

Clicky "Pueblo, Colorado police arrested three people on charges of using a 5-month-old baby as a down payment on a car – not even a new car, but a used Dodge Intrepid. We've done religion, height/weight, age, ethnicity...why not this? You can only pick one. However, you can define what you think these concepts mean. I once heard: "When you're younger, if you're not liberal, you don't have a heart. When you're older, if you're not conservative, you don't have a head." Also, this has NOTHING to do with party affiliation. Liberal/conservative does NOT necessarily align itself with political leanings. I picked conservative....you know, a Regal with crank windows and 247,000 miles.

Question for C&Gers. How do you personally define being a man? Just read an interesting book about boys which had as a Thesis that boys today lack positive male role models and have trouble defining what it means to be a man. The book got me thinking. So: How do you define being a man? To our younger members-do you find a lack of older men that you look up to? Do you agree or disagree with the idea that there are few positive male role models? Do you think todays definition of manhood is different than your fathers? To our gay members-a serious question-how do young gay teens/young gay adults adjust to manhood? So I have gotten over negative feelings I have for both Chrysler and GM but for some reason seem to have a somewhat irrational case of real dislike for Ford motor company at the moment. I really like the current F150, the Lincoln crossover products, the Mustang, the ST twins, the Fusion Sport...and several other products. But for whatever reason I seem to have a real dislike for Ford that is not rational. Any advice you have for helping me think more rationally about them would be appreciated. Thanks!

Not to start a riot or anything but I've kinda always wondered this. Have you known it to upset a Jewish person to see the Nazi flag? Only reason I ask is because in my town, quite a few people wave around the Confederate flag (MD's kinda Northerly to me, go figure) and lots of people I know get pissed off when they see it. It annoys me but never gets me angry. It's kinda like a flag of a failed nation to me, and I can get over the negative connotations. I mean, the oppression is sad and stuff, but if it's a sign of the culture that some southern people still hold dear, it's OK to me and I actually respect it. So what about Jewish people? Since not a lot of German …

If you've cut back due to this economy, what have you done? Me? Went from a 3 vehicle household to a 1 vehicle household. Became a massive coupon clipper. Began regularly baking my own bread. Doesn't save me a lot of dough (har har) but it's enjoyable, relaxing, and my bread is way better than what you can buy at most stores. If I don't need it in the next 7 days, I don't buy it. Funny thing is, I don't even need to cut back. My income has actually increased over the past 12-18 months. I just enjoy the challenge and my savings is looking great because of it.

* note: I don't know how far I want to take this just yet, And I will be editing as I go. Feel free to give feedback as I am just brainstorming at this point. Given the announced threat that the new CAFE regulations have become for the zeta platform, here is my prescription to use that architecture as an advantge in the CAFE race. At the bare minimum each zeta variant would offer flex-fuel and/or 2-mode and/or AFM, with diesel and other technologies applied as required. Cadillac: - sedan to replace both the DTS and STS: US-built and unlimited production. - AWD Crossover/wagon and Crewman style AWD crossover utility: Oshawa-built for domestic market as well as A…

I'm thinking that it will be at least a few more years before GM builds anything that I just can't resist. So, after I clear the decks and unload my current fleet of projects, I'm guessing that I'll go after at least one more "fun" car of recent vintage before a new one is likely. The thing is, I have no idea what it will be. I'm not talking about a classic or project car - just something fairly new and low-mileage that I will enjoy driving when I don't have to drive the truck. Another GTO might work, but I'm not married to that idea. So what do you think would make me grin from the used market in about a year and a half from now?

How Immigration Crackdowns Backfire Reason Arizona legislators are fed up with being terrorized by illegal immigrants, and they have passed a law to get tough. Under the measure, passed this week and sent to the governor, police would have to stop and question anyone they suspect of being in this country without legal authorization. The bill passed after the fatal shooting of Robert Krentz, a 58-year-old rancher whose killer apparently entered illegally from Mexico. Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu says police are also under siege: "We've had numerous officers that have been killed by illegal immigrants in Arizona." Even Sen. John McCain, once a supporter of immigratio…

Gas prices get so high, people stop buying SUV's and we see more and more cars on the road again? My reason for asking this is because my fiancee love Denali's and says gas is not an issue for her....and I think she's nuts!

How long is your work commute? If it's a long commute, how do you manage it? I'm curious because I a company has contacted me with interest, but if I hypothetically got the job, it's 1 hour and 49 minutes each way. I don't know if I could do that 5 days a week. If you have a commute like that, how do you manage it?

Hey, we've seen gas prices go down and now they're going up. The seesaw has become exhausting and I welcome the day that some other non-fossil fuel type of engine is the norm. (I was happy to snag one of the last new 3800 V6s in the LaX and hope to drive it for a dozen or so years, knock on wood). I like driving around for the hell of it, especially where it's scenic. So how long do you think it will take before you wander onto the new car lot and AT LEAST 50% of the cars on sale are NOT powered by a traditional internal combustion engine? Feel free to comment as well.

I went grocery shopping a little while ago, and I got a pretty good spot, right up in front. It just happened to be open, if it hadn't been, I would have parked further away, no biggie. Even with Alex with me, its not really that hard to walk a few yards to the door. So as I'm leaving, a car pulls into the aisle I was parked in and sees me unlock the car. So the woman (appeared to be mid-30's, by herself in the car, stops, puts on her turn signal and waits as I put my groceries in the trunk. And waits as I take the cart over to the cart return. And waits as I put my son in his car seat. All told, she probably waited 4-5 minutes for a good spot when there were sever…

Last night, I was driving home and saw some nice gas prices. I found, at a Safeway filling station, in Northern California (though not coastal), gas for $ 2.52.9 and that was prior to the 3 cent Safeway club card discount. That puts it at a hair under $2.50. That same Safeway, 6 months ago, had gone as high as $ 4.49.9. Looks like I may take a few road trips. What's happening with fuel prices in your area?

... has the company built since Day 1?? Googled the question, saw one estimate of 500 million. Don't know if that source was GM or if GM even has an accurate count. Overseas markets and the confusion of partial brand ownership, etc in the latter half of the Company's history may make a comprehensive tally a challenge. All the years from the Sloan book referenced below are CALENDAR year sales. These numbers are less common than model year, and it makes the transition to those more readily-obtainable numbers inaccurate for that switch-over. 1909 : 32,311 (fiscal year ending 09.30.09 plus 3 months ending 12.31.09) ~ My Years with General Motors, Alfred P Sloan…

With GM's recent search campain to find the longest lasting trucks on the road, but excluding cars and obviously other makes, it left some of us dissapointed. Obviously it's not the same, but I figured why not show off you're car's reliablity to your fellow C & G members? It's fun if nothing else. If at all possible, provide some pics of your car, including of the odometer. This qualifies mainly for cars that still run, and perferable still are owned by you, but if you have a past car with more miles than whatyou currently have, that is acceptible too Enjoy! I'll post my car tomorrow when I can take some pics (kinda dark right now, plus I'm going to bed). Fun idea.…

How many model/nameplates in each GM division appeal to you? I don't mean that you think a given model is a good choice in class, makes sense for you, is financially sensible. I mean which do you look at and say "I'd like to have one of those". How many from each GM division make the cut for you?

I imagine most here use Windows. I'm curious what percentage of Mac and Linux users we have here. Myself, I must use windows at work, but I dual boot into Ubuntu Linux when I'm at home. I just upgraded to Ubuntu - Intrepid over the weekend and it's great. Everything JustWorks and speed is great on this older machine.

There is an 86 or 87 T-Type Regal sitting outside of my work. It has been there for 3 weeks or so. I don't know what is going on with it but I keep on telling the service manager not to junk it. It is quite nice but needs a little TLC. It is a T-Type because it is engraved into the dash. It also has the hood bulge and the Grand National rims. How much are these worth now when restored and would they be worth restoring? HERE ARE THE PICTURES FINALLY. Sorry about the focus. I was rushing so I wouldn't be late to work.

I would say most people go to a restaurant for convenience, for something different to eat, for atmosphere, and for good service. Saturday I went to Applebee's for lunch. The server came by in a reasonable period of time and took my order... so far, so good. Then it all went to hell in a handbasket. I ordered one of their new "combos", which is your choice of an entree and a dessert for one price. I got the Southwest Chicken/Raspberry cheesecake combo. It took a long time to get my food and the place wasn't that busy for that day and time. The cheese on top of the chicken was burned to ash on the edges. It actually disintegrated into black dust when I cut it. The…

So I've taken a few months off to just relax after graduating in December, but it's time to start looking for a real job (I work at a campus bar right now). With that, comes the exciting prospect of shopping for a car. The '95 Olds LSS has served me well, but it's in bad shape after spending the last 8 years on campus (sister and then me) and it's not something I'd want to trust to get me to and from work all of the time. The average salary for my major from the school I went to last year was $61k, but I'm guessing most of that was in Chicago. The two jobs I am going to send my resume to are both in my hometown and $61k in Chicago translates to $50k here, so I think tha…
