Edmunds Evaluation: 2006 Minivan Comparison Test 1st: Honda Odyssey 2nd: Kia Sedona 3rd: Toyota Sienna 4th: Nissan Quest 5th: Chrysler Town & Country If there's an ever-changing segment of the automotive industry, it's the family-friendly world of minivans. In the 29 months since our last hard look at the segment, it has completely turned itself over. The Kia Sedona and Honda Odyssey have been overhauled, while the Nissan Quest and Chrysler Town & Country have been given thorough once-overs. To see which is the king of the modern mommy-mobiles, we brought the four together, along with the winner of the 2004 comparison test, the Toyota Sienna. Each of the …

My choices included a Corolla, a Quest minivan, or this gargantuan mofo... Interestingly, as I drove back by the rental lot this evening, I saw a 2007 Camry for rent. It matches the 2007 Camry rental that cut me off the other day. Fleet queen, who?

I have always wanted to start a collection of automotive stuff, but haven't yet. Who collects all things automotive here? Where do you source it? Who has something very unusual, rare? I've always like vintage photos and collectibles of gas stations....don't know why, but it just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Yes my friends, I'm sad to write that my beloved Saturn SKY was the unfortunate punching bag of a silver 2000 Monte Carlo this past Saturday afternoon. Long story short, I was in the right lane, the MC (out-of-state driver -- Ohio) was in the middle lane, she thought she was passing her hotel and decided to just turn right into me. I tried to swerve so she'd miss me, but instead of breaking she hit the gas and plowed into my driver's door, the driver's rear fender, small portion of the left rear bumper and damaged the chrome rim (and tire damage b/c the plastic inner fender is now scraping the tire). Very pissed, but was surprised b/c the wife jumped out of the car rea…

It's nice here in Dreamland. It's the perfect place. Cars, guys, money... Perfection. I like it here. Anyways, I've been thinking... In the next year, there's a few things I'd like to get done. First up, is a job as some of you know. I've been looking and I applied at a VW dealership for a detailing job. I knew I wasn't going to get it fromt he moment I talked with the guy who was in charge of hiring someone (was an in person application type deal). He was snobby with a "holier than thou" attitude. No surprise here, I didn't get the job. Currently, I'm looking into the new Hyundai dealership where my Grandma got her Elantra from. Had a great experience with one of th…

As you are reading this, you will notice the animated GIF files in my signature and in my Avatar. I have had one or two complaints about them, in that they are slowing down connections, browsing, etc. Really, the number of complaints is like 0.00001 of the site's members, but perhaps there are those who find them annoying and haven't said anything. I understand members still have dial-up internet and my files would be a huge drain on their speed. My question is, should I keep them going? I don't have a poll set up because I think that'd be dumb, because there could be some sort of middle ground or compromise, instead of just "Yes" or "No."

My beautiful wife spent the afternoon working on one of her home made soups and at 4:00 she had to go out to pick up some things so she turned the soup off because she didn't want it to burn, said she'd be back in an hour. Stupid me decides he's hungry and can't wait so I decide to turn the soup back on but then I come back to cheers and gears and forget to check on the soup. Next thing you know the front door opens around 5:15 and she asks what's burning? I am such an ass.

About a month ago I was browsing the local Pontiac-Buick lot on a Sunday afternoon and I bump into my cousin's girlfriend's mother and her father who is 93. I had met them before at family events. I knew from talking to him before that he liked cars and that he had leased a 2002 Buick Century and when the lease was up in May he was supposed to give the car back and not get another one. It turns out the old guy couldn't go without wheels so he was back on the lot looking for a deal on an 06 and asked me if I would help him look around at different dealers to find him the color / model he liked. He wanted something different from the Century/ Lacrosse and decided on a G6. …

I just joined a gym, literally 5 minutes ago, online. It's only like 3 miles from my house. I stopped by there this morning and took a tour, led by a perky young lady. The place seems very low key, and I'm hoping it will help me keep fit over the winter. My biggest fear is looking like a complete doofus. Will the treadmill throw me off the back? Will I strangle myself when I drop the 25 pound barbell on my neck? I've never done anything like this before. I'm hoping it will be a good move. Does anyone else here belong to a gym? Do you have any funny or odd experiences you can share?

I think I've run this one before, but we have quite a few new people.Birth order is interesting and actually regarded as being somewhat psychologically valid. That being said, where are you in the birth order, how many kids are there and what are the genders of those older and younger than you? Also, which ones do you get along and not get along with? My answer: I'm the youngest of 2 - same parents for both - oldest is a brother. Do not get along with him (have not spoken with him since 1995, or thereabouts).

After Ford released Bold Moves: Episode 15; Pitching the Fairlane Concept, we saw parts of what we all thought was the production version of the Ford Fairlane concept, or was it??!! I just got the recent December issue of Motor Trend, and according to them, the Fairlane concept will be very different. Was what we saw just a cancelled prototype? An idea that was originally the answer, but isn't? When wil it debut? What will it's production form take on? Thjese answeres are but to be answered.

Can anyone explain why my connection has headed south literally overnight? Yesterday, I managed to get a decent dial-up connection of around 46.6. Tonight, I've gotten nothing but a lousy 28.8. Usually, disconnecting and reconnecting fixes the problem on the off chance it happens. But now, it's all I get. Running at half-speed just doesn't work. And I can't tolerate a slow connection. Any way I can get my connection back to normal speed? This is getting aggravating. If it helps, here's the Modem Log.

Guys, I'm not looking for sympathy from anyone, simply wanna say "goodbye" to all my friends on here that I've truly enjoyed bantering with for the last few years...... I was recently "warned" when I responded in a recent thread to what I consider a personal attack from a certain member on the site. I was "warned" for that. Unfortunately, it was a thread that all of us were having a really good time contributing to....and someone had to come on the thread and attack me be…

The Truth About Cars TWAT Awards 10. Chevrolet Aveo “Chevy likes to tout the Aveo as the “lowest-priced [new] car in America” and in spite of their warning “content may vary,” it’s easy to see how they achieved that goal. From the hollow-sounding doors, bargain-basement plastics and skinny tires to the coarse-sounding engine that strains when faced with even the slightest incline, it exudes “cheap” from every ounce of its being. The Aveo also refutes the smart shopper’s mantra “you get what you pay for.” In the case of this captive Korean import, you pay little and get even less.“ 9. Yup so I got home just a while ago and checked my mailbox. Inside was a nice sized envelope from Chevrolet. "Cool!" I thought as I hurried into the house to open it. Sure enough, it is a foldout on the new Silverado. But... it only has pictures of the crewcab (well, there's one x-ray pic of an extended cab, but...) It strikes me as kind of cheesy. It feels like GM is cramming the super-expensive crewcab down our throats. What about those of us who would rather have a regular cab, or even extended? I am put off by this. A warm thank you to Walt for inviting me here at the start, and to all the moderators, members, contributors, artists, writers, staff members, advanced member members, as well as the trolls (for making me laugh). I have spent half of my time on the internet with Cheers and Gears, having gone online in 1996 (then it was mainly Buletin Boards known as BBS' on a 14.4 modem). It has been a privelage and an honour to see the site grow, change, and advance over the years. I would like to say that one of my very first posts then still holds true today! 5 years of spare time, hows that?

Toyota Buys 5.9% Stake in Isuzu I'm thinking we're going to want to move Isuzu to the "Other Guys" section now... Toyota announced today that it will spend $373 million on a deal with Isuzu that will transfer 5.9% of the truck- and diesel-maker to the giant Japanese automaker. Toyota's goal in purchasing a stake in Isuzu is to bolster its diesel portfolio, which apparently lags behind other major automakers like cross-town rival Honda who announced in September it would have diesel-powered passenger cars for sale in the U.S. within three years. Next-generation iPod Shuffle: 1 Gb (~240 songs), 8 hours battery. 1.6x1.1x0.46 inches, 0.55 ounces. CAD$90 / US$80. This thing is crazy small. I saw the pictures when I ordered it, but I still can't believe it now that it's here. It's got a clip on the back to clip in into your clothes, etc... I clip it into my work ID badge and hardly notice it's there. One thing I can't believe - the docking station loads all the data and charges the battery through the headphone jack! Oh, and just to be a smartass I ordered it with a message written on the back: "White headphones make you cool."

Alright, the old Lumina is getting long in the tooth (210,000) and it is time to start looking for a new ride. I have been looking at the LaCrosse as a potential replacement. I really like the 3.8 for the balance of gas economy and power. I will use this car for my daily driver and I average 200 miles a day for work. Does anyone here own one or have any experiences with the LaCrosse? I was looking at the CXL trim level and will most likely buy one that is off lease <30,000 miles.

Well I know theres not to many metal heads here but I wanted to tell everyone I went to see Queensryche Operation Mindcrime in its new entirity Thursday night, at Albanys old Palace Theater. Not the best place acoustically for heavy music. I saw Rush and Blue Oyster Cult there twice 30 years ago and the place just boomed, resonating on a certain bass frequency in the Balcony, but they were very loud concerts. People like Santana, Robert Cray, Jean Luc Ponty, Jeff Beck/Jan Hammer and even Uriah Heep did much better acoustically. Anyhow the Queensryche soundman did an excellent job considering and it was not stageringly loud. We abaondoned the balcony and went downstairs w…

Last night, a friend of mine was driving his VW Golf on Highway 20 going about 70 MPH when he reached down for a Gatorade bottle and ended up drifting onto the gravel shoulder. He tried to correct it but lost control and rolled into the ditch at least five times according to witnesses. He hadn't been drinking or anything. Luckily, he was wearing a seatbelt and the airbags went off. If you look at the roof on the passenger side, it's dented in pretty deep. Another friend of mine almost rode with him but had to change plans at the last minute. If he had ridden with him, he probably wouldn't be here today. Scary stuff. He ended up walking away from the scene with min…

I don't want to turn this into politicizing, or an attack on any one group or party, though it is clear what party my outrage is against. I am not trying to attack the group, but moreso the leaders of it who are in office now. The ones who are, sadly, corrupting their party and leading this nation down ever more tenser halls. Why should we divide so much? Why can't we all just agree and meet in the middle, that's supposed to be the beauty of our government, is that we have two parties to check and balance each other for the benefit of the public. One party that favors more government involvement and one that favors less. But where did we go wrong that all we can do is t…

Hello. My girlfriend is looking to replace her '99 Cavalier within the next month or two. At first she was thinking of getting a Cobalt, but within the last few days she has shifted over to the G6 (a little of the reasoning being the G6 comes with a dark green exterior color since she likes British Racing Green), but so far she's looking into getting a 4 cyl. sedan (which with all the options and so prices out near $19,000). From fellow G6 owners in here, I'm wondering if you have had any problems/complaints about it, as well as the positives of the G6. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can look at certain days of the year in Wikipedia, and it will tell you all the historical things that happened on that day in various years. My birthday seems to be fairly significant in American history, a few times. Interesting... June 19: * 1846 - The first baseball game under recognizable modern rules is played in Hoboken, New Jersey, United States. * 1862 - U.S. Congress prohibits slavery in United States territories, nullifying the Dred Scott Case. * 1865 - Over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves in Galveston, Texas, United States, are finally informed of their freedom. The anniversary is still officially celebrated in Tex…

6. Sentra (new one) 5. Corolla 4. Elantra 3. Civic 2. Mazda3 1. VW Rabbit They seemed to have issues with the new Sentra. Of course they didn't like the Corolla because its spongy. They praised the Elantra as being spacious and a good commuter but its a flopper. The Civic is an acquired taste. the Mazda is a good car but it didn't win because of red dash lights. The Rabbit is the best overall. All models tested had sticks. They claimed that no Focus or Cobalt with stick was available to test.

I live near Flint, MI and I know that GM didn't move its headquarters to Detroit until about 1923...I'd like to find out where their original headquarters were located up here. I've been checking all over for weeks on end trying to find out where it was. Does anybody know or have any ideas on how TO find it?

I am going to be starting a job soon and I have some money saved up so I may try to find a good Grand Am coupe for sale. I absolutely have loved Grand Ams, any generation and I have always wanted one as a first car. Pontiacs are great and I think I may rather get a Grand Am. Sporty looks, fair amount of power. I think I might try to find a 90s Grand Am coupe. I see plenty around but no body seems to be getting rid of any. They are beautiful cars nonetheless. I am scrapping all ideas except for a Grand Am, possibly a Sunfire, and some 3800 V6 vehicles. My dad has the idea of me getting a car with absolutely no rust. Up here with all the salty roads, there is no such thing…

I just got back from Quebec. Went to "Second Cup" every morning and did my to do lists and written chores while drinking some good cups of tea. I like the Earl Grey flavor. The basic breakfast blend is good too. I absolutely detest herbal teas. Drinking a hot beverage to start off a cool morning in Montreal was great! At a more formal breakfast, I may get both the orange juice and the tea. I don't drink much coffee, though. What's your morning drink of choice?

After riding the TEST TRACK ride at EPCOT a little over a week ago, the wife and I cruised around the showroom looking at what GM had on display. She liked the Ming Blue Buick Lucerne CXL V6 a lot and hated the maroon Chevy HHR 2LT. I really liked the Saturn AURA XR - but she likes the Lucerne more. So I ask for your opinion on this matter. Which do you think is the better buy/car??? Feel free to post your thoughts in a reply after voting. And TIA!!!

LOUIS - Just days after the St. Louis Cardinals won the top honor in Major League Baseball, their hometown jumped to first place on a list no one wants to lead: the most dangerous cities in the United States. This Midwestern city has long been in the upper tiers of the annual ranking of the nation’s safest and most dangerous cities, compiled by Morgan Quitno Press. Violent crime surged nearly 20 percent there this year, when the rate of such crimes rose much faster in the Midwest than in the rest of nation, accord…

To be introduced at the Istambul Motor Show (the same mototrshow where the 4 door Astra is to be unveiled, I believe), here are two links to articles re the new Fiat Linea: 1) http://blogs.edmunds.com/Straightline/1654 2) http://www.jalopnik.com/cars/news/fiat-get...nbul-208960.php I believe it to be Gamma-based, effectively being the "Grande Punto Sedan": the Linea is 4.56m in length with a wheelbase of 2.6m, while the Grande Punto hatch is 4.03m in length with a 2.51m wheelbase.

Weight gain means lower gas mileage: U.S. study Associated Press CHICAGO -- Want to spend less at the pump? Lose some weight. That's the implication of a new study that says Americans are burning nearly 1 billion more gallons of gasoline each year than they did in 1960 because of their expanding waistlines. Simply put, more weight in the car means lower gas mileage. Using recent gas prices of $2.20 a gallon, that translates to about $2.2 billion more spent on gas each year. "The bottom line is that our hunger for food and our hunger for oil are not independent. There is a relationship between the two," said University of Illinois researcher Sheldon Jacobson, a study c…

Does anybody know if Toyota in particulr is coming to the table with a cheaper RWD platform similar to Zeta or LX. I wonder the implications of a RWD V-8 Avalon to Detriot. Even more daring what about an answer to the Camaro and Mustang. It may be corny but, imagine a RWD Midsize Celica with a 3.5L 268hp V-6 and a 5.7L V-8 with 381hp from the new Tundra. Wow, this world is getting scary for a GM fan. Let's hope it take Toyota 20 years to catch this All-American Trend. Then, again they aren't exactly slow.

No, not the one with the Cobalt, but the one with the 2000 Malibu. While it was a pleasant car, her's wasn't the most reliable. So after 4 or so years of having it, she has traded it for a new car... her first since 97. So what does she get? That's right, a black 2006 Hyundai Elantra (her's not pictured). Not only did so go Korean, she got a black Korean. This is a changer for her since she's always had GM vehicles and always had lighter colors. As you guys would say, she has successfully moved to the dark side... literally. I'm going to drive it and get some pics sometime this week/weekend.

It's only for a week, but she has to travel to Kansas from here (MA) to put her stuff in storage since she broke the lease to her apartment. We had her car's oil changed and looked at, seems ok...but this is deffinitely one of those times I hope Toyota's quality is as good as they say. It hurts like hell that I can't go with her because of school and mid-terms...and it may be a week but I miss her already...it's our first time apart since May. It was a teary goodbye. If it's not too much trouble just wish her luck and a safe trip, it'd me a lot to me...thanks.

The following image can be found at Saturn's website and in the most recent Aura brochure. Is it just me or does that look like a very sloppy photoshop by MDM on a bad hair day? Some of the bodylines present in other photos can't be seen in this one. GM, I love ya', but you gotta fire the guy who threw that photo together. It offends my eyes.

I have a coworker and my boss, both were troubled by Cavaliers and swear that they won't get another American car. How would it be possible to talk them back into a domestic? My co-worker has a '94 Cavalier (looks like a VL sedan) that dies often on her, and has now primarily drives a Mazda3. My boss has a '98 Cavalier Z24. Both of them are very unhappy about the reliability of the cars. What's worse, my boss was actually talked away from the Cobalt by her neighbour, who appears to work at GM. I've seen this case alot, too. And usually the same suspects as well: J-bodies.

Purely informational for those of you in the market for notebooks: based on the reliability of my Inspiron, I'd advise you to definitely give Dell's competitors a good look. I recently found that the model I own is the victim of a design defect - I now have to replace my hard drive and processor after 13 months of ownership. The cause of this - which I am sure is common with all notebooks (to a certain degree) - relates to an excessively hot battery and a lack of some heat barrier. Unfortunately, my battery was not covered in that massive recall nor has Dell felt the need to notify owners. This diagnosis was made by an on-site Dell tech, who also stated that this is a…
