Toyota RAV4 grows up, gets pricier By Paul & Anita Lienert Toyota's baby crossover vehicle, the RAV4, isn't much of a baby anymore -- not since a makeover for model year 2006 transformed this once-compact five-seater into a mid-size seven-seater with optional V-6 engine. The new-generation RAV4 appears to be up to Toyota's usual high standards, with a few surprising exceptions. We drove a well-equipped RAV4 Limited 4x4 with more than $2,700 in options and a bottom line of $27,290. HE: Gee, I kind of miss the old, toylike RAV, even though I outgrew cutesy vehicles like that about 30 years ago. Plus I never did fit in the old one very well. But for singles and youn…

Toyota Motor Corp.'s decision to blame its widening sudden-acceleration problem on a gas pedal defect came under attack Friday, with the pedal manufacturer flatly denying that its products were at fault. Federal vehicle safety records reviewed by The Times also cast doubt on Toyota's claims that sticky gas pedals were a significant factor in the growing reports of runaway vehicles. Of more than 2,000 motorist complaints of sudden acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles over the last decade, just 5% blamed a sticking gas pedal, the analysis found. What's more, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has conducted eight investigations into sudden-acceleration…

What happens when you unleash a pack of automotive journalists on the newest hybrid on the block--and challenge them to beat the chief engineer's best fuel economy? If you plan it right--set a low bogey--you'll let journalists write the best story on the 2010 Toyota Prius from behind the wheel. The fuel economy story. That's exactly what Toyota did at the Napa unveiling of the new Prius, where car writers far and wide topped the engineer's 62.9 mpg by as much as 12 mpg. On a total loop of 33.2 miles, I logged in at 69.5 miles per gallon, without even really trying--just coasting to stops, accelerating very gradually and using the Prius' EV mode to coast into our host …

If you would have asked me 15 years ago if Darrell Waltrip's signature would adorn the side of a Toyota truck, I would have laughed. And today I still laugh, and then cry for the shell of a sport that NASCAR has become. I can only pray that GM is the domestic manufacturer pulling out of the craptacular crapfest known as NASCAR. (and this from someone who has grown up with NASCAR, and now say RIP 2006) Can't wait 'till the DW edition of the Camry next year! http://www.toyota.com/tundra/dw.html

Strange, poorly done ad. From 1994 Nat'l Geo- note the picture captions : What's with "Truck" - couldn't remember the name ???? And wouldn't it help support "and everything in-between" if -say- the celica was on the left and the "Truck" was on the right ? Kinda a 'size range' thingie at least? Weird.

Edmunds Follow-Up Test: 2007 Lexus IS250 The X Package improvements also translate to the track, as our slalom test confirms. Although it's down over 100 hp on the IS 350, the IS 250 is nearly 4 mph faster through the cones with a 70.4-mph result. This is blazing speed, and it puts the IS 250 ahead of the BMW 335i, not to mention about a half dozen very capable sports cars. Full Article

It disappears into Southern California's mass of suburbia like a Caprice in Detroit. It's not an image car. So Newport Ned, all blue chips, high horsepower and big ego, won't want one. But his mother, Newport Nancy, probably will. She's more concerned with comfort than visibility, more worried about the way the journey feels than being noticed at the destination. She's practical, enjoys a smooth ride, an agreeable seat, the perfect temperature and easy list…

A new cruiser for the kids By Karl Brauer Date posted: 01-01-2006 If your first thought when gazing at the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser is something along the lines of, "Oh great, another retro vehicle," you're not alone. Between the Volkswagen "New" Beetle, Mini Cooper, Ford Mustang and recently unveiled Dodge Challenger, it could be argued that automakers have run out of new ideas and are simply living off their past glory. But there's a flaw in that line of thinking. Simply put, Toyota is having plenty of success with its current SUV lineup. Even the company's oldest off-road design, the Land Cruiser, continues to win awards and accolades, including Edmunds' 2006 Mos…

Toyota fails to build a better Corolla By Ed Hellwig Email Date posted: 04-06-2006 Ten years ago an inexpensive, comfortable, well-built car like the 2007 Toyota Yaris would have been a slam dunk. In fact, it was a slam dunk. It was called the Corolla and it was one of the best-selling compact sedans of its time. But over the last decade, compact sedan buyers got greedy. They asked for more room, better features and increased horsepower. Toyota listened, building a larger Corolla with more standard features and a bigger engine. Now with gas prices at nearly $3 a gallon, those same buyers suddenly have a conscience. They've joined Greenpeace, bought hemp socks and sta…

I told him what I was driving and that it was a hybrid. "What kind of mileage are you getting?" he asked. "About 22 miles per gallon," I answered. "Twenty-two?! That's fantastic!" Jumbo Shrimp By John DiPietro Date posted: 11-28-2005 Ten years ago, before the flood of current compact SUVs washed over the market, Toyota's RAV4 offered the Gen X and Gen Y folks an SUV that suited their supposedly active lifestyles. Something that could handle foul-weather driving as well as a trip to the slopes or mountain bike trailhead. Something that had relatively small dimensions for an SUV, making it easy to park in the city. Something that had a frugal four-cylinder engine that promised 20-somethings 20-something miles to the gallon. Something journalists dubbed the "cute ute." DETROIT — Toyota Motor Corp. sells more hybrid vehicles than any other automaker, but an environmental group is targeting the company anyway, saying the average fuel economy of Toyota vehicles is worse than it was 20 years ago. San Francisco-based Bluewater Network, which advocates government action to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, plans to run newspaper ads this week with the headline, "Is Toyota a Wolf in Sheep's Clothing?" The ads feature a photograph of Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe alongside a wolf in a business suit. Bluewater Network says Toyota belongs to organizations that are suing California over its new smog regulations. It also say…

Maybe We're beginning to get a better picture of what the Toyota FT-86 (Scion FR-S for the US) will bring us once production begins. Some scans of what is purported to be the FT-86's training manual has been put on the FT86Club.com forum. It is amazing to read articals like this and observe the obvious media bias in favor of toyota. They make excuses for toyota and then say that these screw ups, which have led to the death of some people, won't affect people's perception of the quality of toyota vehicles...?? Then, in the middle of the article, they have to state that Ford had the largest single recall back in 1996. It was for ignition switches. Nobody was killed or injured in the problem Ford had with those switches, so I think that it is yet another example of how the media folks love those foreign cars and try to talk people in to disliking American vehicles. Toyota spies guilty APRIL 24, 2007 | Link to Original Article @ GrandPrix.com The long-running case against former Ferrari engineers Mauro Iacconi and Angelo Santini, who were accused of stealing Ferrari secrets and giving them to Toyota, has concluded at the Tribunale di Modena with Santini condemned to nine months in prison for industrial espionage and Iacconi facing 16 months in jail for receiving the information from Santini and passing it on to Toyota. No more clowning around By John DiPietro Email Date posted: 12-15-2005 We'll be blunt; we haven't given much love to the Toyota Echo, a car that was non-affectionately dubbed "The Clown Car" by this writer. AP article Jan. 29, 2010 04:13 PM Associated Press Toyota executives have been virtually silent amid a recall of millions of their cars because gas pedals can become dangerously stuck. For their customers, oh, what a feeling - fear, frustration, confusion and anger. Since Tuesday, when the Japanese automaker said it would stop making and selling some of its top-selling models, the company has had few answers for dealers and drivers - most notably when Toyota owners could get their cars fixed and hit the road without worrying. "I'm stuck with this car," said Tony Raasch of Hales Corners, Wis., who said he hit another driver in his 2010 Corolla two weeks ago when the c…

Ford's Not the Only One with Engine Supply Issues... Toyota Motor Corp. has a simple math problem. It is preparing to build about 2.2 million cars and light trucks a year in North America by 2010. But it only has the capacity to produce 1.45 million engines annually, a shortfall of more than 700,000 engines. So it was no secret that Toyota was looking for a site to build a North American engine and transmission plant. Now sources inside and outside the company say Toyota has scrapped that plan in favor of a wave of expansions at one or more of its existing engine plants. Autoweek

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 6, 2012 Lexus decided that the Geneva Motor Show was the best place to unveil the refreshed RX crossover. As we saw in pictures leaked back in February, the RX gains the "spindle grille" as seen on the GS and a strip of LED lights running around the headlights. The back end gets some new design tweaks. Inside, the RX is pretty much the same except for a redesigned steering wheel. The RX also gets an updated version of the Remote Touch interface that should make the infotainment system more intuitive. Engines are a carryover from the previous model. The RX350 sticks with the 3.5L V6 producing 270 HP and a six-s…

Highway Bribery Toyota Joins The Discount Fray Tom Van Riper, 10.03.08, 3:32 PM ET Forbes.com Link to article You know the outlook is bleak for the auto industry when Toyota jumps into the inventory clearance game that Detroit has monopolized for the past couple of years. Just a short time ago, industry powerhouse Toyota was gobbling up market share by charging close to full price while truck-heavy General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford were stuck bribing buyers with heavy discounts. Industry analysts harped on the reputations of Toyota and, to a lesser degree, its Japanese counterparts Honda and Nissan, for reliability and fuel efficiency. Consumers didn't need big i…

I am not afraid of my Toyota Prius I’ve been driving Toyota Priuses since 2001. As a junior defense lawyer in the mid-90s, I litigated a number of bogus sudden acceleration cases that were brought against General Motors. 19 December 2005 By Robert Farago Jinking through traffic somewhere above the ton, it quickly became apparent that the Lexus IS 350 wasn’t the ideal car for the job. The erstwhile sports sedan bumped and jiggled over surface imperfections like a tied-down tunermobile. It rolled through directional transitions like a luxobarge, helming with unacceptable imprecision and unwelcome lean. While the powerplant provided more than enough shove for the work at hand, the IS 350’s dynamics drew a definitive line between “doable” and “enjoyable.” If further proof were needed that I was in the wrong car at the wrong speed, the BMW M3 keeping pace provided it. After a few polite l…

Okay, I was just watching a Toyota commercial advertising their sedans when they announced their "270hp Avalon". Are they allowed to "round up"? I mean, at first their ratings went from 280 to 268 when the new system came out, and their commercials kept preaching 280 rather than changing the voiceover for the correct numbers. But now, blatently announcing "270" when it's still a couple of hp off--isn't that illegal? I'm not going to complain over 2hp--no one would notice the difference, but it's more the principal of the matter. How can you try to be the world's biggest auto maker, and lie? Sorry, I know that…

Just read this and it literally blew me away. The similarities between this incident and the Lexus ES incident in San Diego are pretty alarming. Seems pretty damning to me... And eerily similar to the Lexus incident. I was talking about this with my dad in the early days of the recall and he (retired police) always suspected there was more to this than the pedals because anyone with the level of training he had to go through to serve on a police force would have been able to survive that ES350 accident mainly because they apparently show you in training at least five different ways to make an out of control car stop. His guess was that the car was at the mercy of th…

Aston Martin boss Dr Ulrich Bez has told the producers of the James Bond movie franchise he will no longer pay a product placement fee to see the world's most famous spy drive a car from the British brand. Instead, the producers of the next Bond film are believed to be considering product placement money from ... Toyota. Bez says the British brand [now owned by US giant Ford] has the style and substance to bring unmatched credibility and publicity to the Bond franchise. He says that Bond in a Toyota Camry would do little for publicity or credibility. The dilemma for producers of the Bond films is that other car makers are prepared to pay millions to have Bond…

Japan Certifies Toyota Plug-in Hybrid for Public-road Tests Link to Original Article @ The Auto Channel Tokyo July 25, 2007; TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that it has developed a plug-in hybrid vehicle and become the first manufacturer to have such a vehicle certified for use on public roads in Japan. The TOYOTA Plug-in HV — certified for public road-use by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport — uses, like earlier TMC-developed hybrid vehicles, both a gasoline-powered internal combustion engine and an electric motor. But increased battery capacity gives it a longer electric-motor-only cruising range and a battery-charging device all…

Japan scolds Toyota on recall practices Yuri Kageyama / Associated Press TOKYO -- In a rare public scolding of Japan's biggest company, the government reprimanded Toyota Friday and called for improved recall practices amid a criminal investigation into a 2004 accident. The transportation ministry issued a "guidance" order requiring the automaker to report to the ministry by Aug. 4 steps it is taking to better monitor reports of defects with its cars and speed up communication within the company about possible problems, a ministry official said on customary condition of anonymity. The ministry did not fine Toyota or find it guilty of breaking the law. But public prose…

"A Times investigation shows the world's largest automaker has delayed recalls and attempted to blame human error in cases where owners claimed vehicle defects". By Ken Bensinger and Ralph Vartabedian During a routine test on its Sienna minivan in April 2003, Toyota Motor Corp. engineers discovered that a plastic panel could come loose and cause the gas pedal to stick, potentially making the vehicle accelerate out of control. The automaker redesigned the part and by that June every 2004 model year Sienna off the assembly line came with the new panel. Toyota did not notify tens of thousands of people who had already bought vans with the old panel, however. It wasn't un…

Lexus cars are regarded as some of the safest on the road, however a new lawsuit against the company could tarnish this reputation. A class action brought about by a Florida law firm alleges that the Lexus ES350 is fitted with a faulty front passenger airbag sensor that could prevent the airbag from triggering in the event of a collision. The suit goes on to explain that the defective vehicles are fitted with a weight sensor that gauges the weight of the person in the front passenger seat, but that these sensors have been found to be faulty. One representative claims that he tested multiple ES350 vehicles and found them to be defective, as did other customers from acr…

Lexus Gets "F"-ed 'F,' as it turns out, stands for 'fast,' and will grace the trunk lid of Lexus vehicles that seek to do battle amidst the AMGs and Ms of the world. The first F-inagled Lexus to make its debut will be a hotted-up version of the IS sedan, equipped with a 5-liter V8. What was originally assumed to be called the IS500, the newly dubbed IS-F will come with a revised version of the V8 that resides in the LS600h L and will produce upwards of 425 HP. Pricing is expected to come in around $50k, and is aimed squarely at the upcoming M3. Other models expected to get the 'F' treatment include the GS sedan and a coupe version of the IS. Autoblog

Okay, I'm normally not the one impressed by Lexus, but I just found out about the GS350 through an US Open ad, and I'm definitely impressed. You have to give kudos to Lexus for their relentless pursuit of leading the segment, even if their attempts fail in the eyes of experts. They're almost like the desperate fat kid in school who will try anything to become respected, like offer more horsepower, more room, or more technology than anyone else. Lexus is an overacheiver and you have to respect them for that... Anyway, the point I was making is that they'll do anything, even if it means cannabalizing some of their older products. The $44K GS350 has 303 horses, or 13 more t…

IL Insider: Lexus Mulls High-Performance Driving School Date posted: 03-20-2006 LAKE LAS VEGAS, Nevada — "Lexus performance" has always been a bit of an oxymoron, but the Japanese automaker is hoping to remedy that problem. Lexus officials tell Inside Line they will likely open a high-performance driving school for owners of such products as the 2007 GS 450h and the 2006 IS 350. "It's being considered," Lexus spokesman Bill Ussery told IL. "It probably will be held in various spots around the country. It will be very exclusive." Lexus says the IS, which was launched in October, sold over 15,000 units through the end of 2005. It said 68 percent of total sales were t…

It was at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where Lexus introduced us to the fourth-generation GS sedan. Well, Lexus has chosen Pebble Beach once again to introduce us to updated GS. The big news for the GS is a new base GS 200t. As the name suggests, this new trim gets Lexus' turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic, Lexus says the GS 200t will get 33 MPG combined. Along with the new turbo-four, Lexus is also giving the GS 350 a slight boost in power. The 350's V6 will now produce 311 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque (up from 306 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque). …

Last month, we reported that Lexus was dropping 2.5L V6 for the turbocharged 2.0L four in the IS sedan for Europe. We heard the engine would be coming to the states, but no timeframe was given. Today, Lexus announced details on the 2016 IS for North America. The big news is the turbo 2.0L is part of the changes, along with another engine. First up is the IS 200t, which takes the place of the IS 250. This packs a 2.0L turbo-four with 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Now if you want all-wheel drive, you oddly can't get it with the turbo-four. You'll have to opt the IS 300 AWD which packs a 3.5L V6 with 255…

Automotive News had a chance to speak with Toyota's North America CEO Jim Lentz. During the chat, the topic of Lexus came and Lentz had something interesting items to say about. First, Lentz said that it would have been wiser to build a three-row crossover first, and not the image coupe RC. "In hindsight, if I was making this decision 10 years ago, seeing what I see today, the three-row [crossover] probably would have been the better play to come out first," said Lentz. The three-row crossover would allow the brand to hold on to the Gen Y crowd as they begin to have families and begin looking for a larger vehicle. Now Lentz doesn't say the RC is a mistake. The coupe h…
