http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/02/pontiac...sale/2#comments I don't see why GM would not sell Pontiac to someone who is willing to buy, unless there is the slim chance they plan to reintroduce limited run models in the future. I really like that idea, actually.

Apparently the Big 3 are going to ask the Govt. for $25 Billion in cheap money. The term "bailout" kind of pisses me off, but that's how our brainiacs in the media love to spin it. I personally have mixed emotions about it, because there's this part of me that feels a lot of the Big 3's problems were brought on by themselves. But on the other hand, if we can spend untold millions in Iraq (Halliburton anyone?) - give money to Isreal, spend money on army bases in Japan, have the Federal Reserve "bail out" other big banks and mortgage companies, etc, etc; then I say, why not give money to the Big 3? After all, they're actually producing a useful, tangible product that…

General Motors' announcement to idle and possibly close five plants next year comes around the same time that the company begins their negotiations with the United Auto Workers (UAW). Already, the UAW has said they would go "through every legal, contractual and collective bargaining avenue open to our membership," to try and keep the plants. GM's rationale for the move is to improve profitability and help reduce the underutilization of its plants. As we reported last week, GM represents 1 million of the 3.2 million units of underutilized capacity in the U.S. through October. We should note that GM did not say they were going to close down the plants. They used t…

It has been very quiet in the world of the GM - UAW talks, especially here at work lately. The union guys seem unusually strange, there seems to be a calm before the storm effect. Alot of the union guys almost are acting a little afraid to me and most of the time they are very upbeat. So I was surfing along today and found this bit of news at AUTOBLOG, maybe someone else on here knows whats going on. Stocking up: GM and Ford want to fund health care account with shares Posted Sep 5th 2007 1:01PM by Jonathon Ramsey Filed under: Chrysler, Ford, GM, UAW/Unions The Big Three automakers' massive pension liabilities are well known. To remove that burden, a fund called VEBA …

One of the big remaining technical questions for General Motors' Chevrolet Volt has been who the automaker will tap to supply the batteries. LG Chem and A123 Systems are the two companies that have been supplying prototype battery packs for Volt development program. It has long been rumored that South Korea's LG Chem would be selected, and today CEO Rick Wagoner confirmed the selection. Surprisingly though, GM has decided it will take responsibility for actually building the complete packs. GM will also take full responsibility for all the battery management systems and power electronics. The company will build a new factory in Michigan, but a specific site has yet to b…

“General Motors has developed an all-new digital vehicle platform necessary for its next-generation of vehicles, EVs, active safety, infotainment and connectivity features, and the evolution of the Super Cruise driver assistance feature.” To quote their press release. GM-2020-ElectricPlatform.mp4 We have heard that GM has their next EV platform that will cover multiple new auto’s and that GM has their global ICE auto platform. The one thing that no one has talked about is the nervous system that is underneath these new autos. Tesla has proven that technology can sell and that the younger generation is wanting an auto to stay current much like the…

It has been almost two months since General Motors announced a compensation fund for families who either lost a loved one or who were injured because of a problem due to the ignition switch. According to the Detroit Free Press, almost 300 people have filed a claim. 100 people who have filed a claim said their loved ones were killed because of defect, while 184 people said their injuries come as a result of the problem. These numbers come from Amy Weiss, a spokeswoman for fund administrator Kenneth Feinberg. The Detroit Free Press says each person who has filed a claim has to provide evidence that it was the defective switch that was the cause of the injury/fatality. If …

Hey guys, I wanted to take a step back and take in what everyone was saying about the Delphi issue. Everyone has their opinions and that's ok. Some of it is understandable, especially the union bashing. If I was on the outside, watching news reports where they interview the big guy, who may not have had much of an education, saying the things we hear ... I'd think that the UAW was a bunch of idiots who just demand more money and better benefits. Years ago, some of you may have even seen the UAW president hitting his fist on the table yelling about the auto companies. There are still guys like that. More of the old-timers. But they had reason to be like that. The …

Would scare tactics work for GM in marketing...? If GM had a commerical that really depicted the premium reasons to purchase an american vehicle. If they, in a comercial, analized the affects of a detriotless america... could they score peoples purchasing? Could they really hit people by saying, "In efforts to compete, with the competition, we had to lay off 30,000 americans." "Toyota says they want to help General Motors by raising their profits and making themselves less competive." "if the next vehicle you purchase isnt a General Motors vehicle, your tax dollars will goto the person that built it anyway. Because you purchased a Camry, you…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 22, 2013 Electric automaker Tesla has been a tour-de-force over the past year. Sales of the Model S have exceeded expectations; profits are though the roof; the company has been implementing free charging stations across the U.S. for owners and other things. These success have caught the attention of General Motors. More specially, GM CEO Dan Akerson. According to Bloomberg, Akerson has created a small team to study Tesla and how it could affect the company. “He thinks Tesla could be a big disrupter if we’re not careful. What is GM trying to accomplish? Chevrolet has 8 vehicles, Pontiac has 8, and cadilac has 5, and Buick 3 It makes no sense. It seems like they are purposely trying to kill the Buick division. I don't understand how they expect Buick to be a succesfull division with the Lucerne and Lacrosse whose platform and engine have been around for years. Buick needs new vehicles and they need it now. They should have RWD, a 2dr, a convertible, and a 3 series type. They should also offer more V8's. Come on GM get your head out of your ass

Ok, hear me out, but.. Didn't GM have digital dashes back in the mid-to-late eighties? It was panned as being too gimmicky. Didn't Chevrolet used to have ABS as standard equipment? It has knocked as an added option (and extra expense) that was forced upon consumers. Consumers should have the ability to choose. Today? You're criticized if you don't have ABS as std equipment. Didn't GM get crucified for the heavy use of unpainted gray plastic molding/panels on their Aztec and Avalanche? Seems ok for use on the Element Didn't the dustbuster vans get critized for their design-pushing tall tail-lamps (that extended along the rear glass…

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said Tuesday the automaker will save billions in development costs with a new global engineering plan, but he wouldn't discuss some critical issues facing GM, including Delphi Corp.'s bankruptcy. Lutz also didn't address investor Kirk Kerkorian's efforts to increase his stake in GM. GM's shares rose 94 cents, or nearly 4 percent, to close at $26.42 on the New York Stock Exchange after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said it won't challenge Kerkorian's plan to increase his stake in GM to nearly 10 percent. Kerkorian has said he may seek a seat on GM's board. Lutz said that…

I've been thinking about GM becoming more global and whatnot, and how platforms will now be engineered for use around the world as well as other vehicle componets. But, what about engines? Are the HV V6s used anywhere other than North America? Wouldn't it be easier (and save costs) to produce millions of HF V6s globally and use them in everything that needs a V6? I'm not starting this thread to necessarily put down the HV V6s, but the HF V6s are clearly better and it seems the only reason for GM not putting them in more cars is cost. If they were produced in huge numbers, wouldn't it bring the cost down significantly and bring the price-per-unit down to …

General Motors is making some major changes in Russia. The automaker announced today that it will withdraw Opel and mainstream Chevrolet models in December, and focus on the premium segment of the Russian market with Cadillac and iconic Chevrolet models (Camaro, Corvette, and Tahoe). “This change in our business model in Russia is part of our global strategy to ensure long-term sustainability in markets where we operate. This decision avoids significant investment into a market that has very challenging long-term prospects,” said GM President Dan Ammann. GM will still offer parts and service for those who own an Opel and mainstream Chevrolet vehicles. Along with the de…

Bankruptcy, Shmankruptcy Jerry Flint, 02.13.06, 12:00 AM ET Enough already on General Motors and Bankruptcy. I am tired of the B-word. GM isn't going bankrupt this year; GM isn't going bankrupt next year; 2008 is so far off that even Bill Gates could be bankrupt by then. It's dangerous to go three years out, but no, I wouldn't expect GM to go bankrupt in 2008, either. Why not? The company has $19 billion in the kitty and just about $100 billion in the pension fund. But there's more here than the balance sheet. When I was a boy, there was one reason companies went bankrupt: They couldn't pay their bills. GM can pay its bills, so that's not a problem. The new reason f…

I've read the book All Corvettes Are Red many times and it amazed me what he had to go through to get the C5 out under the old GM product development system. It's cool that Tom Wallace gets the Kappa cars in addition to the Y-cars as his new job, so maybe this means that future Kappas will get even hotter than what is already coming next year. Lori Queen gets small and midsize trucks, but who is going to take over her old job for small cars?

I've read a report today that GM plans to cut the number of platforms and engines for its vehicles by like half in the next several years. Pretty much what a lot of us here have been harping on for a good while here at C&G... FEWER PLATFORMS, MORE VARIANTS PER PLATFORM leads to BETTER QUALITY and MORE PROFITS. How should this shake out? Post your general overview of what you think GMNA should consist of circa 2016.

GM Considers Selling West Mifflin Plant Aug 15, 2006 10:42 am US/Eastern Link to Original Article @ KDKA.com (AP) WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. A union official at the General Motors auto parts stamping plant in West Mifflin say the company wants to sell the plant instead of closing it down as was announced last year. If the plant is sold, it could save nearly 400 jobs there, according to Rick Mismas, shop chairman of the United Auto Workers local at the plant just east of Pittsburgh. Mismas told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review that workers were advised of a possible sale in a union newsletter last week. General Motors announced in November that it was cutting 30,000 jobs to save…

New documents released by congressional investigators last week are putting some doubt onto GM's own internal investigation and legal proceedings. The Wall Street Journal reports that new documents show Doug Parks, vice president of product programs was aware of the ignition switch problems on the Chevrolet Cobalt as early as 2005. At the time, Parks was the chief engineer on the Cobalt and Saturn Ion. On May 2, 2005, he was involved in a email chain with a dealer over a customer wanting the dealer to buy back his vehicle because the ignition switch moves out of the "run" position too easily. Parks responded by suggesting "coming up with a plug" to place on the key to re…

The only reason that I have been able to come up with as to why GM would delay/cancel the NG Malibu and ION (both of which were supposed to be awesome -- and we know the ION was) is that now they're concentrating on the several new crossovers they have planned. I remember a discussion a while back in which our insiders told us that GM thinks crossovers are going to be the key to the future. While getting ahead of the game in an expanding market is good, does GM just expect it's current sedan buyers to make the move to X-Overs when they find out the sedans GM offers in 3 years are the same ones it offers now? What can we expect from these new trucks, there is a new diesel coming we know that, but from the spy pics I've seen of upcoming models there is not much to be excited about. Unless these are stopgap models until newly freshened sheetmetal comes out?

DETROIT, July 8 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp is not planning a sale of any of its brands other than the Hummer line of SUVs, GM's North American sales chief said in an e-mail to the automaker's U.S. dealers. Mark LaNeve, GM's vice president for North American sales and marketing, said none of GM's brands other than Hummer were up for sale or being considered as candidates for closure, despite growing speculation to the contrary. "I have been asked by the media if other brands were undergoing a similar strategic review. My answer then and now was the same -- no," LaNeve said in his e-mail. LaNeve said GM's dealers would be among the first to know if plans changed …

If you are planning to order a Chevrolet Colorado or GMC Canyon Diesel, you might want to put those plans on hold. Members on the ColoradoFans.com have been wondering where their trucks are. Originally, it was expected that the Colorado and Canyon Diesels would begin arriving at dealers this fall, but that time has passed and trucks aren't at dealers. Ask a member what their experience has been like and it will likely go like this: I ordered a truck weeks ago, the delivery date keeps getting pushed back, and GM and dealers aren't explaining why. The Truth About Cars decided to investigate. They got a hold of GMC spokesman Brian Goebel who said, "Those trucks are s…

Earlier this week, we reported that General Motors was working on a compensation plan for owners of 2016 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia crossovers that had inflated fuel economy numbers. Yesterday, the company unveiled the plan. Automotive News and Reuters reports that GM will offer buyers the choice of either debit card (ranging from $450 to $1,500) or a 48 month/60,000 mile extended warranty. Those who are leasing the crossovers in question will only get the debit card. The amount a person will get will vary due to various factors including the difference between the inflated and actual fuel economy figures. “We want all of our customers to ha…

The Echo gets some points in the "damn, Toyota is cheap" category for putting the gauges in the circular hole in the center, so that the gauges could be moved for RHD/LHD without a different dash piece. Suzuki did somewhat the same thing with the Aerio, but without it being as cheap and damaging to the design. The dash is very small due to it being digital. There is a matching piece on the other side that you could take out and put a mirror image of the dash into. There is also a cutout for the "passenger" airbag in front of the driver, which is a blank panel of course. So very few panels would have to be changed to change the side the wheel is on, yet it's a very functio…

Since the launch of Super Cruise on the 2018 Cadillac CT6, General Motors executives said the technology would expand to other brands. But they didn't give a timeframe as to when. Today at the Intelligent Transportation Society of America conference in Detroit, GM product chief Mark Reuss said Super Cruise would begin rolling out to Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC models after 2020. This will follow Cadillac's expansion of the technology to other models beginning in 2020. Super Cruise is "a feature that customers routinely come into dealerships asking about, shopping for, and specifically ordering," said Reuss in a speech. "Making it available in every Cadillac on t…

Buyers can't get enough of GM's midsize trucks. The company says that the Chevrolet Colorado only sit on dealer lots for an average 12 days before being snapped up. This is causing dealers to asking to ask for more trucks. GM's Wentzville, Mo plant is already pumping out as many as they can. But GM has a found a few ways to wring out a few more models. Automotive News reports that the plant has recently instituted a broader schedule reshuffling which saw a unpaid lunch break be cut to eliminate a six-minute production lull which means an extra 18 minutes of production in a three shift day and more importantly - an extra 3,500 trucks per year. GM is also hiring as man…

A dealer here is advertising buy a new chevy truck/suv and make no payments til 2007. First off, I'm laughing because 'another manufacturer' did this before and it still receives criticism around here, LOL...but I'm wondering if this is just one dealer that dreamt this up here local, or is this a new GM sanctioned sales tactic/gimmick. Is a GM deal or just a local thing? If it is a GM deal, this hits a new low in incentive tactics! If not, the dealer is darn desperate to move all those gas sucking trucks and SUV's!

GM picks China for electronics Purchasing unit moves from U.S. to Shanghai Robert Sherefkin Jamie LaReau Automotive News / February 27, 2006 - 6:00 am DETROIT -- General Motors has shifted its worldwide electronics purchasing unit from Warren, Mich., to Shanghai to place it at the hub of China's electronics industry. According to sources familiar with GM's plans, the move is intended to keep GM abreast of trends in automotive electronics and buy more electronic components in China. "Just about all electronic subcomponents now originate in China or Korea or Singapore," says a source close to GM who asked to not be named. "You are more aware and you buy better when …

Put it in neutral, and take a few minutes to get some understanding (and humor) about Tom Friedman from financial expert Bill Bonner... http://dailyreckoning.com/Issues/2005/DRUS120905.html The Daily Reckoning PRESENTS: Bill often mentions that he makes a point to read Thomas Friedman’s NY Times column - not because agrees with the imperial columnist’s musings...but because he finds that that Friedman’s “hollow thoughts” always seem to brighten his day in their absurdity... SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES by Bill Bonner The force of a correction is equal and opposite to the deception and delusion that preceded it. Alan Greenspan, George W. Bush, and all the great na…

Ray DeGiorgio, the General Motors engineer who was called out during the GM ignition switch hearing and subsequently suspended, spoke with congressional investigators earlier this month. The New York Times reports that DeGiorgio talked with investigators for ten hours on May 19th about his involvement in the ignition switch recall. As you might recall, DeGiorgio was the engineer who signed off on a change to the ignition switch in certain GM vehicles. However during testimony in a wrongful death suit, DeGiorgio claimed he didn't remember authorizing any change to the ignition switch. During his questioning with investigators, DeGiorgio appeared “genuinely upset” accordi…

I was just listening to some of Gettlefinger's testimony in front of congress. He took the same old tired position of how much the UAW "gave up" for the benefit of the automakers. I'd like for him to tell us how they actually contribute to the success of their employers. Just showing up at work every day doesn't cut it. After listening to his crap, I'm even more steadfast about one of the requirements for the $25M loan being the elimination of the UAW at these companies. Without this requirement I'd let these companies fend for themselves. Mulally's testimony is the only one who gives me confidence he has a plan for his company. Nardelli seems like he is uncomfortable i…

GM To Idle Two Truck Plants, Cut Down On Inventory William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 20, 2011 Back in early May, we reported on GM looking at cut in production of their pickup trucks. The reason why was due to increasing size of their unsold inventory, which stood at 275,000 at that time. A month later, the pickup inventory has increased by 13,000 to a total of 288,000. To help combat the large inventory, GM idle two of their truck plants for two weeks beginning on July 4th. The two plants are Flint Assembly in Flint, MI and Fort Wayne Assembly in Roanoke, IN. “GM is rightly being quite careful about building products into the sum…

Toyota to Upgrade NUMMI Japan's top carmaker Toyota says it is upgrading a US plant equally owned with ailing General Motors, which has been negotiating an alliance with the French-Japanese Renault-Nissan group. But Toyota Motor Corp., widely seen as set to overtake GM as the world's top vehicle maker, denied that the new investment in the California plant was aimed at strengthening its partnership with the US car giant. The story in the 10/24/05 issue states, "Americans who are 50 years old and older make up 39 percent of the nation's adult population. But they will account for half of U.S. auto sales this year. That share will increase to 53 percent by 2010, predicts Art Spinella, president of CNW Marketing/Research Inc., a consulting company in Bandon, Ore." Buick often bears the brunt of jokes about how the average age of its buyers is [ fill in your choice of jokes, such as "dead" ]. But the Rendezvous showed new Buicks can lower the demographics (didn't Rendezvous owners average 58 or so?). So that's perfect if Buick can skew slightly younger wi…

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060118/ap_on_...ette_comes_back A nice article with a happy ending. I guess miracles do come true sometimes. CARSON, Calif. - The last time former New York City resident Alan Poster saw his dream car, he was young and it was blue. Nearly four decades later, he's a little grayer and the car has turned silver — but it was love at first sight again as the Corvette somebody swiped in New York was returned to him. ADVERTISEMENT "It's a dream. Wow, this is a beautiful model," Poster said as customs officials unveiled the 1968 sports car. "This is definitely a miracle. Because in speaking to the police, the odds of them finding me were a millio…

GM to sell 20,000 fewer cars to fleet customers Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News General Motors Corp. said it will sell 20,000 fewer vehicles to rental-car companies this month, driving down its total sales, Bloomberg News reported today. The company's planned decline in low-profit rental sales will reduce its first-half total by 100,000 vehicles, GM sales analyst Paul Ballew said today on a conference call. "We're going to try like hell" to sell more cars and trucks this month, sales chief Mark LaNeve said on the call, Bloomberg reported. He declined to say whether GM expects an increase from June 2006, which had one fewer sales day than this month. The …

Thinking about the recent thread of Buickman's "Return To Greatness" and the struggles GM has in overcoming the perception gap they face with import automakers, I decided to conduct my own little, very unscientific, yet real-world look at demand for GM cars in my little corner of the world in southern California. I took 30-40 minutes today and drove through some of the parking lots at the Aliso Viejo Town Center in my city and counted 237 cars. The Town Center is a mix of retail, bars, restaurants, and a 20-screen theatre adjacent to numerous office parks and a medical center. In case you are curious about the demographics and population of this area.…

It has been a tense couple of months at GM Korea. Back in February, the company announced a restructuring plan for the division which included the closure of the Gunsan plant (one of the four plants operating in South Korea), and voluntary redundancies for 2,600 workers to stem the hemorrhaging of cash. Recently, GM has been pushing its workers’ union for concessions that would total $80 million. This is part of an effort to get a $500 million injection from the South Korean government to pay suppliers and workers. The workers union weren't buying, threatening to strike and trashing company executive offices earlier this month. Then GM threw down the gauntlet, either agre…

Well I was just reading GM.com's news page to realize they are really pushing for vehicles to use Ethonal. General Motors Promotes Greater E85 Consumer Awareness, Use In Minnesota and I started to think. In order to dispense Ethonal a Gas station would require new tanks and new fuel lines. Everything would need to be renewed for the different fuel. So this could cost several thousand if not hundreds of thousands per station. For how long would this fuel sorce be in use, if GM suspects Fuel Cells are on the horizon? How many years will the gas station have to make pennys per gallon to pay off this fuel switch? will the investment be worth while, if after 5-10 years…

Yet Ford and Chrysler seem to be doing things and FOrd in particular seems to be sliding under the radar lately. Is GM taking too much of a hit? Are GM's issues WAYYYYY overblown?

New York Times Story December 20, 2007 G.M. Selling a Truck Business to Navistar By NICK BUNKLEY DETROIT — General Motors said Thursday that it had agreed to sell its medium-duty truck business to Navistar International, an Illinois-based maker of trucks and diesel engines. The companies did not disclose terms of the deal, which they expect to close on in 2008. Analysts have estimated the unit, which includes the GMC TopKick and Chevrolet Kodiak, to be worth about $500 million with annual revenue of $2 billion. G.M. has been shedding assets outside of its core operations to increase liquidity and focus on its turnaround. In the last year, it has sold controll…

by TOM KRISHER -- Associated Press posted August 31, 2006 DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. has decided to end its sponsorship of CBS' hit series "Survivor," but the world's largest automaker said Wednesday that the decision had nothing to do with the reality show's controversial decision to divide its contestants in the upcoming season by race and ethnicity. GM spokeswoman Ryndee S. Carney said the company made the decision in the normal course of making its media buys months ago, before the show made its recent announcement. "I think it's just a coincidence. I know it's not cause and effect," Carney said. A group of New York City officials have criticized the …
