Does this whole bipartisan push for clunker laws bother anyone else here? I am by no means a conservative, but this just trikes me as a huge waste of government money when we have sooo many other good current uses for the money. Plus, think of all the cars that will be crushed... Plenty of B body big cars. Think of the Caprices that could be fixed up, or the third gen Camaros, or the post 72 El-Camino's, or the decent shape GM trucks that could find a life hauling around a farmer or a mason or something. Don't like this one bit. Thoughts? Chris

So I climbed the stairs of the CN Tower yesterday for a charity event. 1776 stairs (144 flights) Took me 15 minutes, 1 second. The records listed on the wall at the top were quite amusing... Fastest stair climb was 7:41 Fastest stair climb on a pogo stick: something like 58 minutes Most stairs in one day: Up the tower 17 times. Other numbers I don't remember, but had records listed: Fastest stair climb on a modified motorcycle!! Fastest stair climbs while carrying items, including: Engine from a Suzuki Samurai, 200 lb pumpkin. Most stairs fallen down: all 1776, on purpose. People will do some dumb crap to set a record.

So I have been spending some time looking at CNG Fueling stations. I was going to bring this up on the thread I remeber on this site about anouncing that GM was starting to sell CNG trucks/suv's or something to that line. So currently here in Washington, NG is at $2 per Thousand Cubic feet. So what would the ROI be on changing over? Your looking at about 500-1000 for a cng conversion kit for your auto and about $5000 for a home fueling kit. The current thought is this make the best sense for America to kick the Oil Habit, we need a stepping stone to the eventual holy grail of Pure Electric. Since the US has the 2nd largest reserves of NG in the world and most people ha…

For Kettering University (formerly GMI Engineering & Management Institute). I can't wait. GM, Ford, and DCX will be there along with other companies you've probably never heard of. See the list HERE. I'm bringing plenty of resumes and reference sheets along with two photoshops (original versus rendered images on each). One to show my creativity and ideas, the other to show my ability to work as a part of a team to accomplish a goal (Doane knows what's up). So.. wish me luck!

looking on the AutoTrader website I happened to come across a 2005 Cobalt SS SC lease takeover for only $234 per month. I was astonished as I didn't expect a car this nice for anything less than $350 per month, even when leased. I am not worried about the requirement for 91+ octane because I found out that instead of creating a price war by selling cheaper gas, some stations sell 90, 92 and 94 for the prices of 87, 89 and 91 respectively. My budget is pretty tight right now, so I will need a part-time job to pay for it. However, I do have quite a bit of free time. I have one simple question for you guys: Should I go for it?

During a recent taping of "Street Tuner Challenge", a mildy modified Cobalt SS pounds a Nissan Skyline, as well as a nitrous snorting Jetta. All cars were clearly at the limits of tire adhesion, as the little Cobalt had the best lap by more than seven full seconds. Too bad so sad. It was at Buttonwillow Raceway park, and it's coming up on Speedvision...Watch it if you like that sort of thing. :P no joke.

Hey, I am at a crossroads, I am not sure of what I should do. I was looking at a Cobalt SS moonroof without the Supercharger. Now the car clocks in at approx $475 / month and is somewhere in the range for the lease payment on my 05 RSX. They said they "should" be able to buy out the lease on the RSX and I could buy the Cobalt. Does anyone have any opinion on this? I kinda like the RSX more but getting service is hard because of the limited dealers around and when you do get service there is still a hassle with getting parts. It took them 2 months for a strut and I don't see things getting better with the RSX being discontinued. I guess the major question is, is the Cobal…

I just picked up this latest issue. Of great interest (to me at least) is a nice big article on the genesis and styling evolution of the 1977 GM fullsizers. This first round of modern GM downsizing was a spectacular success, followed in 1978 by another successful round when the A- and A-Special cars were made smaller. In 1979, the E-body cars were done, another success, imo. After that, things went downhill for GM, imo, as continued downsizing and the wholesale switch to FWD platforms reached a ridiculous fever pitch that GM has never fully recovered from until very recently. My hopes for GM's future have been high for the last few years, but are starting another dow…

Do you have any collectibles? Basically anything that could be worth something... especially as the years go bye. Anything from automobiles to scale models of automobiles or even old articles and stuff like that. If so, share it... I happen to have a few things. The first is a relatively good looking copy of a Popular Mechanics magazine from 1954. Again, it's in good condition considering its age. I know I have magazines that are less then 10 years old in worse condition than it... :P I also have another thing that is in damn good condition. It's a Radio Shack remote control Porshe 928. I'm curious if you guys know anything about this college. College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mi.. I noticed some fairly big names are in the alumni, such as the designer for the Ford GT and Chrysler 300. I've been looking into schooling lately and this campus appears to be good bet for the Automotive Design field and its not overly far away. Tuition and housing would run about $35-$40k a year, which would hopefully be covered by Financial Aid.

I was sittin there in my econ class and I hear this guy sitting next to me talkin to his friend about his friend's new car purchase. The guy bought a Cobalt SS. Sweet, he said he loves it. Then the guy sitting next to me mentions that he got a new car too. Guess what car it was? He said it was a SUPERCHARGED REGAL! I was like whoa!!! I asked him if it was a GN and he said no, but it was a 99 GS. I said sweet choice, to which he replied that its a great car, very fast, etc. That put a smile on my face, hearing young kids actually buying some GM products and knowing that they are actually pretty nice.

I went to a Jewish wedding in Santa Cruz CA on Saturday. I got there about 1.5 hours early and needed to change into a suit, so I hit Starbucks and lounged around for that time. In addition to having a weird culture to begin with, UCSC is located here. It is the only campus in the famed UC system that does not give letter grades. Other weird college towns: Eugene OR - California-hating Oregonians and earthy-crunchy frumps galore Bellingham WA and Olympia WA - more of the same; also, lots of Subarus - what saves Bellingham is that it's clo…

Tonight I worked the Rutgers football game as a volunteer- my son's school takes home a % of the gross (averages $2500 per home game), and a bunch of us run the concession stand. I got to man the iced beverage bin outside of the stand, so I had a wide field of vision along the concourse to scan the crowd. Rutgers was something like 11-1 last year, so the crowds are near capacity this year too, around 40K at home (they lost tonight: 3-2 so far. Frankly, I don't follow college ball; I don't care). Anyway, 95% of the crowd are students or of student age. My God, what a poon parade. So... what's the anecdotal line on the college girls these days? Is it pretty tough to ho…

I don't wear enough that you can smell me coming a mile away (you have to get pretty close), but I've gotten many compliments: all from female co-workers. When I was young, my favorite was Christian Dior's Eau Sauvage. I usually like light, citrus scents like Annick Goutal's Eau de Hadrien or Eau du Sud, which are primarily lemon and grapefruit. I switch in cooler weather to Index's Cucumber Baie and Pomegranite Anise. Lately, I've been wearing Serge Lutens' Borneo 1834, which is patchouli and cocoa, and his Chene, which is cedar, oak and thyme. OK, there's an awesome new vehicle that you've just gotta have, but there's one problem. The color you've seen (and love) on other cars isn't available on your model... bah. Name your vehicle and the color you wish it came in. For example, I'd love to see a Colorado shortbed regular cab ZQ8 in monochrome Laser Blue with Ebony leather and machined or polished factory rims, and a Colorado Z71 4X4 in that cool new pearl brown color that's on the LaCrosse and '06 Impala and Monte with tan interior, body color flares, and machined finished factory rims. Colts lose!

I was pretty depressed about the Patriots losing in such an ugly manner yesterday, but the ending of the Colts-Steelers game was absolutely insane... Polamalu's reversed interception, Manning sacked, Bettis's fumble (why the hell didn't they kneel?!), Roethlisberger's game-saving tackle, Vanderjagt's missed FG... what a crazy game. Even though I hate the Steelers, I hate the Colts more and took joy in Manning's frustration and anger. Now I want the Steelers to beat Denver and then lose to Seattle.

Both cars I've drivin on a daily basis have been floor shifter so I'm used to it. That one week I had my car in the shop for repair on the head gasket I was going between my dad's 2000 Impala and my bro's 94 Park Ave (both have column shifters). The following week after I got my car back, I remember one point I was backing up and when I went to put it into drive I reach up and hit my windshield wiper switch as if it was a column shifter Idk.. I must have been pretty tired or something that day. But anyway, for those of us who are stuck with/perfer an auto over a manual, wich do you guys perfer?

Good deal! Figured I share the wealth with my friends... Pennzoil is offering some good rebates on their website. My favorite is the 15 dollar rebate on Pennzoil Platinum (buy 5 qts) So, go to Walmart, and buy a 5qt jug for 20 bucks. Send in your rebate, and you just got a 5qt jug of synthetic for 5 bucks! Enjoy! Their is also rebates for the dino and HM oil too..... I'm thinking the Cobalt might feast on this stuff for a while.....

A thread about comedians. Who do you like? Who don't you like? Etc. Personally, I've been a fan of Stephen Lynch for a while and seeing him on Comedy Central for the first time in a while last night gave me the idea for this thread. He's a comedic song writer. One simply needs to listen to Hermaphrodite, Lullaby, Grandfather, Talk to Me, Kill a Kitten, or one of his many other songs. They're cleverly written and on top of that, he's a great vocalist and guitarist. Other than him, I'm also a big fan of Carlos Mencia and Lewis Black.

The talk in the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class thread got me thinking about SUVs for me. I want something big and comfortable with lots of torque. Prefer CPO to have a warranty and not deal with severe depreciation. Should have a 6,000lb minimum tow rating (Not that I tow, but that rating requires a tongue weight rating of 600lbs which is needed for a Mototote) I like cushy rides. Thoughts are: Jeep Grand Cherokee with air suspension Escalade/Yukon/Tahoe SWB XC90 doesn't have a high enough rating, but I do like it. What else am I forgetting?

Interesting article here about commercial vans being the next "big thing" in the marketplace. Can't say that we haven't already discussed this topic here, but in the article there's an interesting picture that has caught my attention. Ford will be bringing over the larger Transit to replace the Econoline model, and if it came directly as this: I think I'd be tempted to change over to Ford for my next family hauler and give the wife what she wants (a minivan). Can't wait to see where this new market goes!!

Hypothetical situation: you travel a good distance 5 days a week by car to and from your job. You are in the market for a new vehicle. Do you buy an inexpensive, economical vehicle since higher mileage at trade-in tends to affect resale value, and you know you'll take a hit, so why not get into a "throw-away" vehicle with a modicum of comfort and fun for the weekends? Or do you go with something bigger, nicer and more expensive BECAUSE you spend so much time in your vehicle, and that time should be spent in something with bells and whistles to make the slog more enjoyable and the weekends even more so? Seeking opinions.

just kind of a loose thread to get everyone's thoughts on all the new compacts and subcompacts out there. Lots of nice new entries and now some of them have been on the road for awhile..... here's a few random thoughts I have had. Seen several new Focus on the road, but they seem bland and egglike to me. Lack of 6 speed manual bugs me. Still like the Cruze Eco although I think the Focus has a nicer interior. Been seeing more new Jettas now. Warming up to them on the outside. Depe…

Looking at the fullsize pickups from the Big 3, I always thought the Ram was the biggest in all dimensions by a good measure, with the Ford looking the narrowest by a good shot. But, in reality, they're pretty close together in size: GM: 79.9 wide 73.6 high 205.6 long 4463 lbs Ford: 79.2 wide 74.8 high 213.2 long 4685 lbs Dodge: 79.4 wide 73.4 high 209 long 4519 lbs This is for shortbed regular cab 2WD versions.

So, I never did fix my computer. After 7 months, it's gotten to the point where my desktop works most of the time. However, it still has moments when it disappears. I've singled the issue down to the file rundll32.exe. I apparently have some bad .dll files that were added by the virus that my anti-virus software doesn't seem to detect. Specifically, there's one that keeps attacking my Mozilla Firefox and causing it close when it's being run. Before this, I got rid of a bad driver that was causing pop ups. I hoped it was the main cause of everything, but it wasn't. I always figured rundll32.exe was the problem itself, but it's where it should be and is obviously Windows so…

So I think it's finally time to upgrade my computer. I haven't done anything to it since I built it after all, and the 7950 GX2 is showing its age. I've been shopping around lately for a good replacement that $200 or under. EVGA 896-P3-1262-AR GeForce GTX 260 Superclocked Edition 896MB Seems to be a nice combination of performance and value. However I'm open to other options if anyone's got some to recommend, since I'm just shopping around at the moment.

I just got back from seeing Conan himself speak at the University at Buffalo and he was hilarious. He spoke for about two hours and he was his usual wacky self up on stage. Too many funny things to talk about. One of the many highlights of the show was when he told the students to vote for Tom Cruise to be the next person in the UB speaker series and to charge him on stage with foam bats and just beat him until he stops acting crazy. Another funny thing was how he interacted with the moderator of the questions. The two had a funny chemistry going. Much like how he interacts with Max Weinberg. He also had a few serious things to say about how the media makes p…

So found this on Motor Trends web site, the top 10 concepts that should have been built. I have to say I really like most of them and the one Chrysler did, while the first time seeing it for me, this should have been done from day one. Talk about pure sex on wheels. http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/g6565/10-concept-cars-we-wish-had-made-it-to-production/?slide=1 My Favorite two are as follows: Chrysler Atlantic Concept Cadillac Sixteen Plenty of other cool auto's but these two are my fav's.

I have to say it, as odd as it is for me to admit this, but I really do like the Saturn ION. But, in Red Line Quad Coupe form only. When I went to Ft. Wayne to the Saturn dealership and gave them my number to contact me for when the Astra arrives, I sat in one. Know what? I loved the center mounted gauge cluster and the wonderful Recaro bucket seats up front. The interior plastics don't feel harsh and cheap now, and have nice graining. The dash plastics in the ION feel better than those in the Cobalt. They don't sound hollow, and feel semirubberized. The steering wheel could be adjusted for any position and not block the guages, and, of course, I loved the amber…

Chances are he grew up to be a conservative. At least, he did if he was one of 95 kids from the Berkeley area that social scientists have been tracking for the last 20 years. The confident, resilient, self-reliant kids mostly grew up to be liberals. The study from the Journal of Research Into Personality isn't going to make the UC Berkeley professor who published it any friends on the right. Been on that other forum (GMOutsidenews) and it sucks big time. Moderators only want post they approve of, so I have pulled up stakes and moved here. Ahhhh the breath of freedom and way nicer people here too. Just thought you should all know what a good thing you have here! No censorship, no one trying to put words in your mouth, no name calling, no personal attacks. Just cars, and people who enjoy cars. No one who is 13 years old, trying to discuss the finer points of 1960's muscle cars. My hat's off to you all!

As Toyota Motor Corp. joins the Big Three Detroit automakers in trying to soften up fuel economy legislation winding through Congress that would require a Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard of 35 mpg by 2020, what gets lost in the controversy is that the carmakers actually could achieve the target. They just want a little more time — and money. Key to the fuel economy target in the likely bill: building pickups and sport-utility vehicles that average 27.6 mpg by 2020. Despite complaints from automakers, that goal is certainly attainable. But it's going to take a well-funded information campaign aimed at consumers to prime the marketplace for what amounts to a re-eng…

http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/ In a veto proof margin, no doubt enhanced by election political pandering, the House passes bill to sue OPEC over oil prices. The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Tuesday allowing the Justice Department to sue OPEC members for limiting oil supplies and working together to set crude prices, but the White House threatened to veto the measure. The bill would subject OPEC oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela, to the same antitrust laws that U.S. companies must follow. The measure passed in a 324-84 vote, a big enough margin to override a presidential veto. The legislation a…

Can anyone explain why my connection has headed south literally overnight? Yesterday, I managed to get a decent dial-up connection of around 46.6. Tonight, I've gotten nothing but a lousy 28.8. Usually, disconnecting and reconnecting fixes the problem on the off chance it happens. But now, it's all I get. Running at half-speed just doesn't work. And I can't tolerate a slow connection. Any way I can get my connection back to normal speed? This is getting aggravating. If it helps, here's the Modem Log.

Well, as I've said many times, after I test drove an Acadia back in January, I've been infatuated with the Lambdas ever since. As I always do, I attempted to peak some interest in the queen mum--her Suburban is right at 3 years, which is actually the LONGEST she's owned any of the past 4 vehicles--and she what she thought. Still SUV comfort and space, but much more refined, better gas mileage, and much lower pricing than another new GMT-900. Didn't immediately get such a strong response--well, aside from a while ago when she saw the Enclave concept on Motorweek and said "Wow, what's that?!"--until just recently. Out of the blue I was asked "Those Acadias, what kind o…

The wife anad I are currently reviewing our financial status and trying to decide what is the amount we are comfortable paying per month for a new vehicle when the Envoy lease expires soon (August). Of course small and cheap would be best (a loan amount not exceeding $20K), but there isn't much out there she likes at that loan amount (she really wants a 2008 Enclave, CTS, S40/V50, or a VUE, just so you know). We don't have a large enough down payment, so even looking at a $23-$24K MSRP would be stretching it. She's not fond of the Malibu ( ), so don't suggest that, and we already are leasing an AURA, so that's out of the question. Anyway, as we were talking yester…

While helping a friend look for a new car I made sure to hope over to Consumer Guide for their comments and ratings. I was surprised by the car not getting a "Best Buy" rating because the score was so high. Upon closer review I found: 1. The Chevrolet Cruze showed an average of 29.2 mpg during the test cycle which gave it a score of 6, whereas the honda civic, which got 26.1 to 28.5 mpg, got a 7-8, and the mazda mazda3 which averaged 19.6 to 30.7 mpg got a 5-8. 2. The Chevrolet Cruze got a higher or equal overall score of 67-68 as compared to the honda civic (61-65), toyota corolla (55), mazda mazda3 (62-69), and VW Jetta (64-73) yet was not named a Best Buy like th…

We all know how much consumer reports sucks at selecting their favorite cars. Well, I read their recent coffee article where they said 'eight o clock' coffee was the 'best'. I do know its the CHEAPEST. So, needing to conserve $$$$ lately, I bit, and in lieu of the starbucks....I got some of this crap. Tried it. EWEEEEEEEEE. All you starry-eyed CR worshippers that get the warm & fuzzies when quoting re-affirming company rhetoric, you may want to reach for some Valium. The associated Press is reporting this morning that the Yonker NY-based 'consumer advocate' magazine has retracted a strong, damning review of infant car seats (only 2 of 12 'recomended') when federal government review showed CR tested the seats at drastically higher speeds than they claimed. Most of CR's test samples showed 'disasterous failure' at speeds stated to be as low as 35 mph. One infant dummy was hurled 30 feet. But NHTSA revealed that some of the crash tests were conducted under conditions that would represent …

So I was reading the latest issue of CR and in the auto section they had a little side article about how cars that are recalled does not mean they are unreliable or unsafe. The ONLY reason why they wrote this was because St. Toyota has been falling to the nasty recall bug the last few months. NEVER would they have put that in there and used GM or Ford as an example. P.S. WHERE DO YOU WANT THE WIPER SWITCH -- either its on the stalk and its "too busy" or its not and "hard to find"

NEW YORK - Jim Ammons grumbles to himself every time he fills up his Ford Expedition, but he says gas prices would have to almost quadruple to $10 a gallon before he’d ditch his SUV. Still, paying $55 to fill his 20 gallon tank isn’t easy for the information specialist. “This right here is catastrophic for a lot of families,” Ammons, 54, said this week at a Houston Chevron station that was charging $2.65 a gallon for regular unleaded. “A lot of them have to choose: Do I buy food, do I send my kids to school or do I fill up my tank?” That choice may soon get a lot more difficult. The steep rise in oil prices to $90 a barrel over the past month means American consumers a…
