Each supercenter -- the only big box Wal-Mart builds these days -- means, on average, 300 retail jobs with a strong company. "It's the No. 1 reason" towns cite for approving construction of a Wal-Mart, said Al Norman, a critic who's been talking about Wal-Mart across the country for 17 years. "They tell me, 'Yeah, we have to bend zoning laws. Yeah, it's going to make neighbors unhappy. But it's creating jobs.' " And in the beginning, jobs do come, at least at ground zero. Immediately, there are the 50 to 100 construction jobs, which last maybe a year. Then there are the 300 new retail positions at Wal-Mart. There may well be hiring at businesses nearby that offer th…

So Saturday night after taking my family out to dinner at a Japanese Hibachi restaurant for the little guy's birthday (he's 4 years old now!), we ride through a couple of GM dealership lots so I can see what vehicles they have (I was looking for G8s, but also anything else that caught my eye). My wife on the other hand feels we should be going used for now to get "more car for less buck", which does make sense. While I was looking at the 2 remaining G8s on the BPG lot, she was looking at a used 2006 Buick Terraza CXL FWD. Afterwards, at the Chevy dealer across the street, while me and the little guy were looking at 'Bumblebe' (his name for the all-new Camaro), she was …

No matter what cars are in my fleet, I always want to drive the most recent acquisition the most. Since the Blazer hit the road, the wagon has been sleeping in the barn and the Silverado has done quite a bit of driveway sitting. It has close to four times the mileage of the truck and the wagon is still a "freshly done" project, yet I choose to drive this old soldier most often these days. I'm sure the manual trans. has something to do with it.

But, recently I stumbled upon a newer American bike company that just blows me away. This bike is so wickedly stunning in a brutal elemental way. To me it's very American in appeal. If I recall correctly they are over $60,000 each. It's a regular production bike. I want one so bad now. Now if Buick brought back the Wildcat....hmmmm, I like this combo. The Confederate Hellcat:

I also asked for the earlier version of Crash, with one of the Arquette sisters (no, not Alexis, ha) and I think James Spader and a fine Lincoln Continental convertible... unfortunately, they don't carry it... why was I not surprised. Has anyone seen any good movies lately, either first-run or home video?

As we approached an intersection, the road divided into two lanes at the stop light. I went into the left lane, pulled up next to the truck and yelled out to the driver "hey, your left one is hanging a little low." He said "Wut?", kinda nodded toward the back of the truck and said "Oh, thanks." At which point I drove off. Last week I ran up and told the girl in front of me while we were at a red light that she had no brake lights on her Elantra... but it wasn't as fun for some reason.

Do you tend to form a convoy of good buddies and travel for miles, maybe mildly jockeying for position in line, but staying together in a ragtag group? Strangers traveling on the road of life together, separately, having never spoken, maybe glancing over for a split second to see who's who... And it all falls apart when they turn off, or when you hit the toll booths and they have an easy pass and you have to go into the "cash only" line.

  66. Twenty years ago, 25-30 percent of young people reported that they had tried anal sex. Today, a recent survey shows that 40-45 percent have tried it. Anal sex is more popular among Americans than ever before, but there are almost no medical studies on its effects. Indiana University sex educator Debby Herbenick has just written a fascinating article for Alternet about one of the very few studies ever conducted on it. The study focused on whether women experience pain during anal sex, and how that affects their behavior. http://io9.com/5950734/why-is-there-so-little-scientific-information-about-anal-sex

...to replace your current older, high mileage car with a newer, low mileage example of the exact same model? Do people do it? Does it speak of my reluctance to change? Because I'm seriously considering trading in the white '99 Passat for a dark blue 2005 Passat. Or I could get a less lavishly appointed 2002 Audi A4 with higher miles, and an uglier color (silver...bleh), but get more "status" for my money. Thoughts? Comments? Opinions?

As I've shared previously in different threads, I was startled awake on the morning of July 26. My alarm went off as usual at 6am, but 2 minutes later ... BOOOOOOMMMMMM ... SNAP/CRACKLE ... HISSSSSSS. Then, dead silence. I sat bolt upright in bed ... realizing everything electric (or so I thought) was off. I scampered out of my room headed up the steps, instinctively turning on the stairway light .... and, wowa, ... light. So, I turned back into my room ... and flipped some of the circuit breakers and the entire house had power again. Next door neighbor heard it, too. We believe it was a lightning strike. My VCR is no more [replaced with one an Uncle gave me], my …

I realized we were still posting in the November thread (though really months have little meaning). Saw a very clean bronze '69 Olds 88 convertible today, top down. And did a double take when I saw a gray Pontiac Torrent in a parking lot..forgot that vehicle even existed. Looked like a 1st gen Equinox.

Well, I managed to plaster two deer the other night on my way to pick up my girlfriend (plans ruined obviously) and since my car is 11 years old with like, 127,000 miles, my insurance company totalled it, but it's still driveable and I haven't quite decied whether to buy it back or abandon it and hope I could get something else quick or what. Then, a week after hitting those deer, I was on my way to work driving at like 4:30 am and hit another one going 55, but ironically, this deer didn't cause any damage. P.S. All deer listed (3) were dead. I have nicknamed my car "The Slayer". Got stuck in my drive during the big snow storm and couldn't go to work. My road wasn't…

Should all the predictions of the Zeta platform's demise and the end of performance cars, v8s, and RWD come to pass, I have a suggestion for GM. Preserve one little corner of your empire that is inviolate and untouchable, an island of automotive joy amidst the sea of boredom coming our way. Keep this one small island sacrosanct and immune from the coming disaster. Don't make the error of leaving the good stuff entirely out of the portfolio as was done before. Keep just a few eggs in a different basket. What I am saying is simply this, use Pontiac as the lone standard-bearer for performance cars and let it truly be what it is meant to be at long last. Let this one bran…

I hate weddings. No real reason, I just do. I got an invitation for an old friends wedding next month. I really dont want to go, because I really dislike weddings. Have I mentioned that? I tried using the no babysitter excuse(a lie, btw), she said that I could bring my son. I'll think of some way to weasel my way out of going. All this got me thinking about mine, which is tentatively scheduled for sometime between 1/1/2010 and 12/31/2020. I've already asked if I can have someone stand in for me during the ceremony so I can play video games or something. That got a no.

Background: Tamils are a distinct ethnic group within Sri Lanka (island nation south of India). There's been a civil war raging since 1983 between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger rebel movement. The Sri Lankan government is just now clearing out the last of the Tamil areas, and is nearing military victory. There is a huge Tamil population in Toronto, as many of them have left due to the conflict. Over the past couple of months there have been massive protests downtown with the goal of getting the Canadian government to help the Tamils. Depending on who you ask, they are freedom fighters opposing genocide of their people, or a terrorist organization. I real…

December 13, 2005 Stand in front of the mirror when you get up tomorrow morning and you’ll notice more than a few reminders that man descended from the apes – an unhealthy disposition when threatened and a liberal sprinkling of hair are the most obvious. Males of the species range from growing hair on their heads to hair all over their body and personal grooming preferences often necessitate shaving some or all of this hair regularly. We’ve already covered the shaver designed specifically for shaving heads, and now there’s an equally ingenious shaving accessory for shaving your back – until now, everybody has had to employ the indulgence…

Then show a stream of Cobalt SS, Malibus, Impalas and Corvettes enter the scene doing the stunt ballets. After dancing for a short while, a covered carrier truck arrives. Camera zooms into the container, and zooming into the light fading into the Camaro sitting inside, zooming into the smooth body lines and slowly getting brighter.
