Now that it's after Thanksgiving (in the U.S. and Canada) I can start talking about Christmas and everything that comes along with it: decorating, cookies, parties, gifts, snow (hopefully), etc. I think I've learned this rule from my parents who have followed it to the 'T.' A local radio station began playing an all-Christmas playlist about two weeks ago, I believe, and that got my thinking about Christmas songs. I downloaded a bunch yesterday in my spare time and now I have a question for my fellow C&Gers. What is your favorite Christmas song? Personally, I like "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo" by Trans Siberian Orchestra, "Where Are You Christmas?" by Faith Hill an…

Yokohama working on tires designed to move the air Tire design is typically focused on how the rubber interacts with the road, but what about the atmosphere? Yokohama has been developing a new concept tire that can improve both a car’s efficiency and handling by redirecting the air around it. The design involves small fin-like protuberances built into the outside of the tire near its shoulder, where the sidewall meets the tread. (Yokohama) Mounted at alternating angles, when they reach the top of the tire’s rotation they help to reduce aerodynamic drag, which improves high speed fuel economy and, potentially, the top speed of the vehicle. 21. NAFTA The latest rounds of the renegotiation talks have started, and they have an emphasis on U.S. demanding new content rules. Just to summarize, the U.S. wants more domestic content, which means NAFTA region countries, and 50% mandatory U.S. content, just to name a few of the changes. This hopefully isn't too political of an issue, it's more to do with how you feel about the rules should be for automakers and their suppliers doing business in America, Canada and Mexico. I think the U.S. demands - on paper, atleast are fair. U.S. is the largest market for autos in NAFTA region. I want to hear more of just how you feel about this issue. Feel free to so…

This year I gave Sofia an orange Sharpie marker and had her sketch out her own design on a pumpkin, after which I carved it with her pointing out the lines and giving me "artistic direction" the whole time. Kids are so much fun. Some days she makes me want to pull my hair out but overall she's a great little girl. SAN FRANCISCO – California's Supreme Court upheld the state's gay-marriage ban Tuesday but said the estimated 18,000 same-sex weddings that took place before the prohibition passed are still valid — a ruling decried by gay-rights activists as a hollow victory. Demonstrators outside the court booed, wept and yelled, "Shame on you!" Activists said they would go back to the voters as early as next year in a bid to repeal the ban, and a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn it was filed late last week. In a 6-1 decision written by Chief Justice Ron George, the court rejected arguments that the ban approved by the voters last fall was such a fundamental change in the Califor…

I get to go first... http://www.arenamotor.com/listings/l0005.html I like it because 1. Its a 4 speed 2. it's a great color combo 3. I've always had a soft spot for chrome bumper C3's 4. It's a driver and hasn't been resotred to within an inch of it's life as a trailer queen 5. The top goes down! 6. Orig. drivetrain 7. It just has "the look" if you know what I mean... Your turn, guys (and GMpartsgirl). Respond as to what you like or don't like about this car..or post a link to a car in your area. Oh, and Sixty Eight they have on…

http://desmoines.craigslist.org/cto/981613164.html Recently a deer ran into my car (not much damage, thankfully, but a visible dent on the rear passenger door) and I've been thinking about picking up a cheap older car with RWD to have fun with so I can save up for a new purchase a year or two down the road. I came across this '85 Cutlass today and am very tempted. Not much in the way of pictures, but it looks like a farm car (probably gently driven) and only has 90K on the odo. $1800 seems like a great price. Anyone know the reliability with G-body Cutlasses?

We've had some discussion lately here about an old idea that some of us would like to see come back at GM, the whole "more variations per model, fewer models" thing. Well I have a twist and a proposition for you guys. My question is this: let's say the entire Buick division were reduced to the Epsilon II platform LaCrosse, and you are in charge of product planning, based on this restriction... it would be like you are basically sent back to 1960, a time when one basic bodyshell carried the entire Buick division of General Motors successfully. What would your lineup look like? You can shorten the wheelbase, lengthen it, and go with any number of bodystyle and trim var…

This was hands down the most amazing show I have ever been to. I've seen MetallicA 3 times now and this was by far their best appearance. I have NEVER before witnessed a band so tight as this one. Death Magnetic has really breathed new life into this establishment. Everything was amazing... From the intense laser show that kicks things off to the pyrotechnics, to the falling and rising GIANT coffins, to the beach balls at the end. James voice sounded phenomenal and he has once again mastered singing in a higher octave (like the old stuff) This show was double the pleasure for me because Lamb Of God (One of the openers) is my second favorite band behind MetallicA. Eve…

  70. US OKs $150 million to help Yemen fight terrorism WASHINGTON – The Pentagon has approved $150 million in military assistance to Yemen, the country where al-Qaida linked militants planned the failed Christmas Day airliner attack over Detroit, The Associated Press has learned. Administration officials said the money was approved Friday by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and is more than double the amount of U.S. aid to Yemen last year. It will pay for military equipment and training for Yemeni forces. U.S. officials worry that Yemen is becoming the next significant terrorist staging ground, amid ongoing signs that lower-level al-Qaida operatives have been moving into the …

What is the worst thing you've ever done to a car to make it workable? i.e. I don't have the money to fix it right, so out comes the duct tape. Worst for me wasn't my car, but I helped my buddy do it... He had a '96 Cavalier. The front section on the frames of the J-bodies are extremely weak. If you hit anything in the front, the whole front of the car will come back and the door will buckle the quarter panel the next time you open it (seen this a few times!). This was not what happened to him, however. This was even worse - 2 people got in a fight beside his car while the door was open, and one of them got pushed in to the inside of the door, pushin…

when will the "other guys" start using this standard for engine ratings, and do you think that it would have any effect on what buyers would look for....an SAE rated car vs. and non SAE rated car? one more condition on that, since GM is the only one doing it, (right now, right?) how will it effect things after a few more brands use this standard. one way this could be usefull is if you the powercurves on the performance models and over lay them with the competitions power curves. this make sense? sorry if it doesn't.

I went to bed at like 9 last night. I have the windows open in the house. Around 10:25 I am awakened by a freaking basketball being dribbled and smacked against a backboard... next-door neighbors are standing outside with a bunch of friends talking, and two young girls (about 8 and 10) are playing with this basketball in the dark (one of them repeatedly remarks that she can't see the ball!). WTF. This went on for at least a half hour. And the adults are oblivious to the problem. I live on a cul-de-sac, and none of the rest of us here ever makes noise, let alone at inappropriate hours of the night. I really wish I could use a Jedi mind trick to get them to move out …

One thing I've never understood. How can people who are clearly in the wrong return the finger? I was biking today and got cut off by someone who just had to slam on the brakes at the stop light anyways. I let her have it through the open window and gave her the finger. She returned it and truly enraged me. Took everything in me not to beat the living crap out of her in front of her kids. I don't get it - why risk this? I'm clearly already enraged by her, why would she want to make it worse?

I downloaded new iTunes7 today, thinking it would solve the sound problem. NO. I am incensed, and tired of windows and their shetty operating system. As I drive around and see different state license plates, I think yay or nay. Some are really cool and some are misses. My thoughts on a couple of them: California - the cursive script is cool, but otherwise bland. Washington - Mt. Rainier and the colors are soothing, but some people don't like it because not all of the state can see Mt. Rainier from where they are...and eastern WA is very different from the Seattle area where most of the population resides. Arizona - not bad Utah - TOO colorful Nevada - washed out with its golden sky...Nevada, in my mind, used to have the BEST plate of all the states: it was called the Big Horn design. The plate was essentially …

Car & Driver 10 Best for 2007 Every year the entire Car and Driver staff gathers at a rural site about 30 miles west of our home office in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a week of evaluating all the new cars and, hopefully, avoiding cops. We judge the cars in three general areas: First, how well the car performs its intended functions. We expect sports cars to be fast and exhilarating, while we presume a family sedan will be practical. Second, we show a preference for the more engaging cars in each category; be it better driving manners, a double-take-inducing look, or a powerful engine. Finally, we are suckers for a good deal, so an inexpensive car that’s fast, fun, and …

It's that time of year again, are any of you starting any new diet or fitness plans? I actually started a rather drastic cutback on calories before the Christmas holiday, cheating only on the Xmas day and New Years Eve. At 5'10" in height, 180lbs is the limit I let myself get to before I start actively dieting.... only this year, I went over that before the holiday and I have to fit in a suit next week. I normally run 165 - 170 lbs. I cut my calorie intake from 2500 - 3000 per day down to a strict 1500 per day. I've tried to make time to hit the gym, but it simply isn't happening right now. How about you... making any changes for the new year?
