That is apparently the lifespan of brake pads on a manual Cobalt when driven by me. Screech pads weren't hit yet either, they were just found to be thin upon inspection. This car has treated me quite well for the 200,000 so far... ps. Who has the highest mileage car on this board? I know I'm not up there yet, but I'm just curious.

Well, I just got back from seeing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Its a 2h-45m long movie although it doesn't feel like it in the least. I loved the movie, it was a whole lot darker than the first, which I liked and it was far funnier. The biggest thign that I saw was that the Transformer's movie was one of the previews that strung along. I got a kick out of seeing it and whispered to my wife "we'll be seeing that". So has anyone else seen the movie?

Not those balls, pervs. I'm talking sports, as in I'm in a funk because there are no worthwhile sports this time of year. The NFL is a bunch of whiny, overpayed jackasses, and the games aren't really that exciting. College football is dead to me since Mizzou cant seem to beat a halfway decent team. The NBA is worthless, the only good part of the game is the last two minutes, since just about every game is close, but then there are timeouts after every play. I cant watch a basketball game when it goes to commercial every thirty seconds. College basketball doesn't interest me because all the best players are already in the NBA, plus neither Mizzou nor Missouri State i…

Been a while. Good to see you guys are still in operation post-bankruptcy. Some of you may remember me, I wasn't the most active poster but I have been a member since 2002 (before the real big redesign back in 2005). Also, you should be happy to know I'm still carrying the GM torch in other message boards I'm active in. Oh, and I guess I have to post me and my wife's current rides. I'm still in the old beater, a 2001 Cavalier. It actually had a fuel pump failure last summer, which set me back $500. But, bought used in 2005 and thats the only problem I've had, so I can't complain much. As for my wife, we sold the 2006 Escape back in September and bought a 2010 Mazd…

eBay listing The highest bid reached just over $150,000, but the reserve wasn't met before it was pulled from the auction. "Final Objective" is a street legal 55 Chevy with a V12 1650ci Rolls Royce Merlin engine (the same type of engine used most of the P51 Mustang fighter aircraft). At 3000hp, it is in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most powerful street registered car. The car was built in Australia by Rod Hadfield of Castlemaine Rod Shop. It's been on a tour of the US, and it looks like he doesn't want to bother shipping it back to Australia.

curse got me again. about 6 months since the last time. was driving. sudden massive hailstorm. big effing hail chunks. golf ball size and greater. so dense you could not see. it was like driving into gunfire or hundreds of folks banging on your car with hammers. frightening actually. my wife was the one driving. she actually managed to get it parked under part of an overpass to avoid a lot of hits. still the front and roof were getting raped. we drove again for a bit and then had to park again. one lady parked next to us and got out of her Japanese $h!hbox (CRV). her windshield was toast and she was moaning about all her dents. my wind…

Well, the thread title pretty much sums up the problem. The roof wants to vent, but the right side doesn't want to slide back, when the left slide does. The Chrysler/Dodge dealer sais it would cost $670 for a new assembly + labor! Thats outrageous, I'd rather just get another car. Any ideas or know where I can get used parts cheap cheap cheap? Oh, and the vehicle in question is a 2001 Plymouth Neon.

To do high speed rail...we would need to fund the system adequately. A recent estimate for a line between Milwaukee and Madison was $810 million....and that rate per mile...it would cost about eight or ten billion dollars just to put a basic system into Ohio. Not that I would mind spending the money...I'd spend it here rather than on another carrier group we are never going to use. But we can''t just cough up 7 and a half billion dollars out of an already short Ohio treasury to do so. Want to see what happens with the high speed trains on the coasts as this will get interesting.

So I'm back after a few month sabatical and my life has changed considerably since I've last been at C&G. My relationship of three years ended rather suddenlty, though in reality it was heading downhill for a while. She is still one of my best friends and we still care deeply about eachother but our directions and goals in life were diverging. She moved out of our apartment July 4th weekend and I moved out at the end of the month since the lease was up. I moved from Westchester county into New York City, i…

While visiting Stayner, Ontario, I happened on this gem. It is a really rare, and extremely low milage 1996 Dodge Ram Indianapolis 500. An elderly gentleman owned it since new, then passed away leaving it for his kids, and then it found its way to a dealer in Stayner. It is kept in a climate controled garage! 18,827 Kilometers (11,698 Miles!!!) and perfect condition. Looks like it just came from the factory!!! They want $17,000 for it. From info I found on the net, approximately 2802 Indy Rams were built! VIDEO: PICS:

So I was in the store today and came across a 4-pack of something called Virgil's Micro Brewed Root Beer. Looked at the ingredients label and say: Purified Carbonated Water, unbleached cane sugar, caramelized unrefined cane sugar, herbs, spices, and citric acid. Contains no preservatives and no caffeine. Gluten free. Saw on the other side of the label, "Virgil's is a superb blend of Spices and Herbs gathered from around the world over; Anise, Licorice, Vanilla (Bourbon), Cinnamon, Clove, Wintergreen, Sweet Birch, Molasses, Nutmeg, Pimento Berry Oil, Balsam Oil and Oil of Cassia. Last night, my best friend got into a head-on collision. Her parents called me at like 7.30 and were like "Julie* got in an accident", and I was like "I'll be at the hospital as soon as I can." So I get there and wait around for like 4 hours and finally get to see her because she was being released. I was so happy to see her alive, I started crying and she was crying, and everyone was crying. And then I said how lucky she was and how I needed to go, but I'd come over to her house and we'd talk. So I went over this afternoon and she told me all about it. She said it was her fault. She was trying to pass someone on a 2 lane highway, and that she mis-judged the space …

I am putting up this poll because I can't decide myself. I really want to do a project car and create something unique but cost comes into effect. I either want to do an 89 Dakota, 318 conversion but this would be a long term project to spread out the costs and badge it as a Dakota SUper Bee or Rumble Bee. I also may take that Aries I saw a while back or maybe the one in the junkyard for cheaper and drop in a 2.2L Turbo from a Shadow or Daytona. Intercoolers can be had for it as well. I really like the Aries idea to surprise people at the track if I can get it quite fast. There is a 10 second Reliant out there as well. 1989 Reliant "Relentless". A RWD K car has been done …

This has been an albatross of sorts for me professionally. I started it back in late July last year, but with all the rain last summer, a few months off for winter, minor surgery, and other jobs tossed into the mix, I did not finish construction on this until yesterday. It was fraught with unknowns. Tho the plans were done up by an architect, he never shot a single elevation, and ultimately 25 yards of dirt had to be removed. Tho he spec'd the upright posts as cedar- he never spec'd the horizontal wall slats as anything. They turned out to be cedar, too, and the material costs ballooned. All the thinner horizontals had to be ripped- you cannot get 3" wide cedar planks. T…

I traveled to Oshawa, Ontario yesterday with Polish Kris. We cruised around the W body facilities and GM Canada Headquarters. The place is massive. There are overflow lots filled with Impalas and Monte Carlos as far as the eye can see. The trains pull up, and the cars are loaded for shipping. At one corner, we saw GM employees drive a virtual parade of Impala SS' fresh from the factory, straight to the shipping yard. They floored them pretty good too. We spotted some interesting stuff. There appears to be a running change to the Pontiac Solstice. The split foglights are gone, replaced by turn signal units as seen on the Grand Prix GXP. No big deal as they a…

I got out of my house this morning to discover my car was hit and run. The driver's side of the car was sideswiped from behind, leaving a gash along the rear door, quarter panel, rear bumper, and rear wheel. More worryingly, though, is that the alignment is off; the poor thing now veers right. The Passat has a twist-beam rear axle, and I'm guessing the beam is bent. There really aren't any rear alignment settings for it (I just had the car aligned a few weeks ago, along with new rear shocks). Anyone know if a rear beam can be knocked back to spec, or am I looking at a new axle? I don't have collision insurance coverage on it.

Haven't had a good food thread in a while. I was reading the paper the other day and came across a recipe for deep dish pizza, which caught my eye because, as a native Chicagoan, I hold deep dish pizza to a very high standard and haven't had anything good around here. I decided to make it this morning even though I didn't have all of the proper equipment, like a mixer with a dough hook so I had to spend the better part of an hour playing with the dough, but it was totally worth it. I didn't do anything fancy with the innards since I was mainly concerned with getting the crust right. In the end it turned out great, would have been better if I had been more concerned wi…

I just picked up this latest issue. Of great interest (to me at least) is a nice big article on the genesis and styling evolution of the 1977 GM fullsizers. This first round of modern GM downsizing was a spectacular success, followed in 1978 by another successful round when the A- and A-Special cars were made smaller. In 1979, the E-body cars were done, another success, imo. After that, things went downhill for GM, imo, as continued downsizing and the wholesale switch to FWD platforms reached a ridiculous fever pitch that GM has never fully recovered from until very recently. My hopes for GM's future have been high for the last few years, but are starting another dow…

Finally captured this beast... That's a 2007 Lexus ES350 'Diamond Deluxe Edition' driven by the world's oldest (and poorest-taste) Lexus owner. The best part is what you can't see - portholes. Nope, not generic fender vents either, but the rounded aftermarket Ventiports that you can purchase at your local Buick dealership. Worse yet, he stuck four portholes on each side. Not just a poseur, but a liar as well.

like for example.... "No Particular Place To Go" Ridin' along in my automobile My baby beside me at the wheel I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile My curiosity runnin' wild Cruisin' and playin' the radio With no particular place to go. Ridin' along in my automobile I'm anxious to tell her the way I feel, So I told her softly and sincere, And she leaned and whispered in my ear Cuddlin' more and drivin' slow, With no particular place to go. No particular place to go, So we parked way out on the Kokomo The night was young and the moon was bold So we both decided to take a stroll Can you imagine the way I felt? I couldn't unfasten her safet…

This is a great place you got here. I go by Floyd Henderson but some call me Hendershot. Just thought I'd introduce myself. Not always around during the week but it's nice to catch up whenever I'm around. Again, real nice place, keep up the good work.

Changing Minds: A Detroit News Series Part One: http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A...382/1148/AUTO01 They are dramatically changing the way they do business by cutting costs, restructuring operations and pouring resources into new products. But Detroit's troubled Big Three automakers have an equally tough task ahead in changing the minds and attitudes of American consumers. Concerns about quality and reliability are the prime reasons that consumers avoid vehicles built by General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler AG, according to an exclusive study conducted for The Detroit News by J.D. Power and Associates. The News study…

Hi all I have a friend whose looking for a new used car, she has her sights set on a 2003 Ford Taurus LX with 65,000 on it and it's in great condition, they are asking $7,995.00 for it. Now I have already blue booked it and the dealer is coming in slightly lower than its blue book value that's not my question. My question is. I don't know what the reliability record is for the Taurus. Could someone please help me out on this? It would be much appreciated. Thanks Robert

It's a silver '87 with T-tops and a split bench seat, 46k original miles, very clean though not perfect, still titled in original owner's name. The seller wants $8,500 ( a bit high IMO) but he seems eager to sell it and willing to negotiate. The car is quite nice.

Since my shop I work at has opened its garages to the public for about 2 years now, every BMW I have seen seems to have either spun bearings or Catastrophic engine failure. Normally we tell them to go to the dealer then they tell us how much they will charge then we under cut it by almost $2k or more then I'm stuck with some European car expert In Bay 4 with a engine in 10 billion pieces over 5000 tags where sensors hook up and calling BMW for either parts numbers or .PDF schematics. You would think BMW would be good at making a engine by now. This is probably the 4th one this month. Is it common for BMW engines to Seize or self destruct? or are Metro Detroit area Be…

So I started the day off by tweaking the default C&G banner to better integrate with the spiffy new layout. Next up I brought the Intrepid around front to detail it in prep for what I was hoping to be a photo shoot for the calendar. Spent an hour or so detailing it and the wheels. Then I dragged out my "new" shop vac and gave it the most thorough vacuum its probably had since I bought it. So much better to do when you're not putting coins in the slot! No sooner had I just finished all of this and got the tools put away did my dad show up. We're finally getting rid of the `86 Caravan LE and the Town and Country. So I had to help load up various bits of junk that were…

Ok, so to make a long story short, I have a friend who works for his dad who runs a lumber mill. They need a forklift (for some reason beyond my comprehension) and my friend mentioned something to me about it. We then got into a very long, intense conversation about playing chicken on heavy machinery. Anyways, I came across this warning sticker on Crown's website. Avoid being crushed, good advice even when you're not talking about a forklift.

It reads "2008 Saturn Astra Europeans have loved it for years! [ picture of silver car ] Now it's our turn. Autobahn worthy handling, brash Euro styling. 32 MPG Starting at $15,495." Not a bad ad. It's for "Saturn of Hartford" and "Saturn of Berlin."

Okay, it's a safe bet that Rod Hatfield Chevy in Lexington, KY paid to rip off the melody of some popular rap song for their annoying jingle ... but I wonder if they paid Mr. Loizou of GM Inside News to use his nifty old 'chop of a future Malibu in their local ad spot here? I didn't record this video, so don't blame me for the shoddy camera work. Anyway, pause the video at the 1 to 2 second mark. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VA8DNt4kKWg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Yep. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090609/ap_on_...ilding_collapse GARNER, N.C. – Officials now say only two people are unaccounted for after an explosion at a Slim Jim meat products plant in North Carolina. Emergency Medical Services official Jeffrey Hammerstein says a third person initially declared missing was found and went to the hospital along with 20 other people. He says authorities were still searching for two others but it wasn't clear whether they were inside the building. Hammerstein said five injured people were tagged as priority patients with serious conditions. Several workers reported hearing an explosion before the collapse, and Garner Mayor Ronnie Wil…

I've had this idea for sometime and every year I try but come to the same struggle I'm having now. Back in 1970 after my dad left the service, he had bought a red 1965 Corvette (327cc, 4 speed) convertible (black top) and he loved it but then was forced to sell it as he was having some financial issues since he was still in college at the time but really wishes he could get that car back all the time. Now, I have nowhere near the money to go buy and restore a 65 Vette but I do want to have a large size poster printed and framed for him. I'm thinking something at least 30" wide. About a year ago I had found this image off ebay and had emailed the seller if they had any …

I seem to keep collecting cars. With our new Skylark, my wife an I now have 7 vehicles on the place. We have 3 Camaros (87 IROC, 95 Z/28, 99 Z/28), 2 trucks (67 C-10, 99 Silverado), the Skylark, and (gasp) a Metro (used to save gas so I can play with the fun cars). I think I am officially a caraholic. Is there a program for this. I really don't want to be cured though. :P
