Went to pick up my new vehicle on the evening of March 15th. Was greeted by my saleskid as I got my last few things out of the truck. Was cheerfully handed the key to the car as he went inside to ready the final paperwork. So I went to open it up... transmitter wouldn't unlock car. Key wouldn't unlock lock cylinder in door. (Dealership has two locations, my car came from their other store 15 miles north). Turns out, wrong spare key was sent along, so key had to be ordered from FoMoCo. No big deal. A Euro-style key with internal cuts, local dealer has no cutter for it. Primary key works, of course, that's how they drove the car to my selling location. Two weeks a…

* My "car season" may be winding down quicker than expected, but it sure has been a weird summer, at least compared to the last few years. 93-year-old Florida woman retires her ’64 Mercury after 576,000 miles on the road Link: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/93-old-florida-woman-retires-her-64-mercury-204007316.html These days, most people consider themselves lucky if a new car lasts 5 to 10 years. Make it to 100,000 miles in your vehicle, and the car company might make a commercial about you. That makes 93-year-old Rachel Veitch a notable exception. Veitch is retiring her 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente after more than 576,000 miles on the road. "I am legally blind, so I can no longer drive my lovely Chariot," Veitch told FoxNews.com. "They don't have to take it away, I would not dream of drivi…

The Year Is: 1991 The year is 1991. Your son has just turned 16 and the two of you have just finished a father son project in time for him to drive to school for the first time. Things are going well until you get a call from the principal that your son has been a tad irresponsible in the school parking lot with his new found freedom/ride. You decide that while he pays off the damages, a minivan would be more his speed. The only question is, which one? 1991 Toyota Previa 1991 Pontiac Trans Sport 1991 Plymouth Voyager 1991 Plymouth Colt Vista 1991 Oldsmobile Silhouette 1991 Mitsubishi Expo 1991 Mazda MPV 1991 GMC Safari 1991 Ford Aerostar …

(This is a pretty large file so make sure you scroll around to see all of it. Ah yes, once again it is time for everyone's favorite map guide to the NAIAS. Guiding us again this year is none other than NOS. As you can see, he's very excited, so lets not waste any time. Off we go. NOS enters through the Macomb hall doors and is overcome with a massive cloud of new car smell. He immediately passes out. Five minutes later, he wakes up to the bomb sniffing dog licking his face. To his left he sees the Accord Coupe Concept. Skeptical, he walks over. "Hm...it doesn't actually look like a bland turd" he exclaims. It confuses him as he actually finds it somewhat attractiv…

Today my friend and I (the one with the Corolla) were getting out of clas to go to somewhere in Mass to take pictures for my photography class. We got in my the car (I had the Intrepid today) and I started it up. I went behind the seat to get my camera out. Apparently he either forgot I started it or didn't think I turned the key al; the way because he asked Him: "Is the car on?" Me: "yeah" I put it in reverse back out Him: "Wow, it's really quiet" Seems every time we go for a ride in it he's more impressed with the car. So how quiet (GTOs and other loud V8s/purposely loud vehicles need not apply ) or how refined is your vehicle's engine? Like I've said before…

Four kids elementary / middle school age were caught today throwing debris off the 9th Street bridge in Des Moines that passes over I-235, and Channel 8 news captured them throwing a log over just before police arrived. Not only did they throw a log, they also threw bricks and rocks. Keep in mind that these bridges were recently rebuilt and now have the protective fences, but they were low enough that the kids could still throw stuff over them. Someone died on I-80 a few years ago after a group of teens threw a concrete block over and it smashed through the windshield. When they interviewed one of the kids, he said it was a dare and was kinda smirking about it. Sad t…

So in the same vein of the displacement threads, I thought this would be a fun take on it. We'll use a broader displacement range, but limit choices to vehicles that use forced induction. Rules- 1)Production only. 2)These are your only vehicles. 3)Maximum of 5 choices. 4)Any era and market is allowed. 5)Vehicles must have no more than 4.0 liters of displacement, and must be supercharged/turbocharged. Have fun guys.

A few days ago I posted a thread titled "Critical mass" during a point this week where things in my personal life had become very stressful to me and I needed to vent. I eventually deleted that thread not wishing to add further stagnation to the stormy climate here at Cheers and Gears. In that thread I made mention that doctors were fairly certain that my uncle had cancer. This bit of news was the "breaking point" for me earlier this week, having witnessed two family members fall victim to the disease prior. I really didn't know how to handle that news. However, I recently received the good news that they are no longer certain that he has cancer. I am relieved to say th…

About every other week or so I cruise some online car buying websites looking to see what decent used GMCs are for sale. Wishing that I had the extra cash, or at least had an easy and quick way to get out of the AURA lease, most of the time I just "daydream" about buying one of the many trucks I've found. Yesterday I' was a little bored so I cruise on over to one of the used car buying sites and search '99-'02 GMC Sierras. I found this one: 2001 GMC Sierra SLE Regular Cab, Shortbed K1500 It's what I've always wanted (well, if it had the sportside bed option it'd really be perfect) - regular cab, shortbed, K1500 (4WD) SLE with tons of factory options (foglights,…

Front Rear It's an '06 R1200 RT. It belongs to my Dad, but I chipped in a bit so I can ride it if need be, plus he deserves a nice cruiser. In one picture, if you look hard, you'll see the wheel of his BMW from the 70's, which is currently a load-bearing device in our messy garage; however, it has all the parts to be restored.

Someone around here must be more "into" pop culture than me and maybe can provide me with some help... I have noticed especially with track/wind breaker style jackets and even in fashion in general it seems alot of people are either wearing "older" clothes like from Good Will or buying new "old" style clothing. Can someone shed some light on this? Is wearing "old" clothing coming back? I have seen stuff being worn by lots of younger people lately and it was stuff that was out in many cases only about 10 years ago, and in some more like 20 or even 30. Is this a new trend around the country, or is it something going on just around me? I have really noticed it the past few m…

I'm going to have to make the buy of a lifetime. I have to find the best possible deal on a plow truck, and the budget will be tight. I don't know exactly what I'm going to have to work with yet, but regardless of cost I need to "buy well". So, if something crosses your path, please let me know. And wish me luck. Here are two examples of what I'll be looking for generally. Black Barbie Sold for Less Than White Barbie at Walmart Store Walmart Says Lower Sales of Ballerina Theresa Barbie Prompted the Price Cut Walmart is raising eyebrows after cutting the price of a black Barbie doll to nearly half of that of the doll's white counterpart at one store and possibly others. The Theresa dolls, which feature brown skin and dark hair, are marked as being on sale at $3.00. The Barbies to the right of the Theresa dolls, meanwhil…

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39516346/ns/us_news-life/?gt1=43001 Firefighters in rural Tennessee let a home burn to the ground last week because the homeowner hadn't paid a $75 fee. Gene Cranick of Obion County and his family lost all of their possessions in the Sept. 29 fire, along with three dogs and a cat. "They could have been saved if they had put water on it, but they didn't do it," Cranick told MSNBC's Keith Olbermann. The fire started when the Cranicks' grandson was burning trash near the family home. As it grew out of control, the Cranicks called 911, but the fire department from the nearby city of South Fulton would not respond. "We wasn't on their list," …

OK, you are all probably going to think my whole family is crazy including me but...here's my situation. In order to get me to accept it, my parents bought me a christmas gift certificate from my local GM dealer for 15,000 dollars, and said they could make payments on top of that. The catch is I HAVE to go to UW. Where as if I settle for a 2004 Alero Coupe, they will not pressure me to go to UW because the can get a LOT better deal on it... I only have until friday to use the certificate though...if I don't Emil refunds their money, and I get NO new car...every…

A recent survey by a professor of his economics students finds the following: The median student believes that 35% of workers earn the minimum wage and a substantial fraction think that a majority of workers earn the minimum wage (Actual rate in 2007: 2.3% of hourly-paid workers and a smaller share of all workers earn the minimum wage) When asked about profits as a percentage of sales the median student guessed 30% (actual rate, closer to 4%). When asked about the inflation rate over the last year (survey was in 2009) the median student guessed 11%. Actual rate: much closer to 0%. Note, how important such misconceptions could be to policy. When asked by how much …

Ok, so I have a Sunbeam toaster. I made some toast with the temperature selection set on "4.5". It was dark brown, but still good. Now the fun part. You know those friends that come up with those "ideas"? Well, I had one at my house today. He suggests to toast bread at selection "7". Do you know what "7" does to bread on this 3823-100 model Sunbeam toaster? It gives you a square charcoal briquette and the scent of burnt popcorn. Now, this just might be me, but I feel that temperature "5" should be "7", or have "5" as the highest setting. Being the pain I am, I sent a statement (not a real complaint) of my opinion regarding this. My most important stateme…

I won't say I never do it. Sometimes my "soft spot" gets affected and I will throw the remaining change or that rare dollar bill into the jar when I go up to the counter at a Starbucks or a pizza place. Tips are for table service. Until the last 5 or 10 years, I rarely saw tip jars at places where you walk up to get your coffee, tea, sandwich or pizza. Now they are everywhere. I don't really dig it and, if you use a credit card, there's that space for a tip that you either fill in or zero out in front of them. Talk about being put on the spot. I will only drop in money 10 % to 20 % of the time. That is if they are genuinely friendly and attentive or if they were…

Hope this is ok to post here. I figured its not "GM News" worthy, but a little more laid back here. Does any Canadian dealer have an idea what GM is rolling out next? IE September 1st? My salesman have been mum on the subject. I looked at the board from this time last year and saw very little. I'm (sadly) giving up my 2004 Av in about a month or so when its off lease. The wife and I have decided on the HHR as a replacement (her Optra car is up in 15 months...so this will be hers then, then me, back to an Av or something else a little more substansial) Thanks to a few dealers, its clear there's not a lot left for 2006 in the HHR LS with options we want, in Canada…

Hello my friends. I am besides myself at this time, finding it hard to sleep. I know tomorrow will not be any better, and I would like to share with you the reason why I feel this way tonight. One of our two family dogs (both Lhasa Apso's, Benji [11 years old] and Snickers [8 years old]) over the weekend suddenly became ill - the younger dog, Snickers. He has always been in good health, but this weekend he was showing signs of distress. An appointment with the vet tonight did not bring good news. The vet listened to his lungs and verified that he was having major breathing issues. An x-ray showed his lungs were enlarged due to advanced cancer and the only humane opt…

* I haven't had time to write anything new for Motor Gnomes recently, but something that my friend, Don, wrote on his 10/10/2011 post, caught my attention...because I agree: His post here: http://www.motorgnomes.com/2011/10/miata-car-clubs/ I see so many clubs having well-attended events, including DRIVING events; yet, it seems so hard to simply get people together from various groups/boards in Chicagoland. Maybe someday that will change. For a year, I thought it had, with 65 people attending the 2008 MidSummer Chitown Gathering. But then, every year after that, interest waned, including very low attendance at 3 Meet'n'Greets, 04/16/2011, 05/21/2011 and 07/30/201…

While I haven't been much of a fan of Motor Trend lately, I picked up the Sept/Oct issue of Motor Trend Classic for an article on the Corvair, and an interesting piece on the '59 Chevy's fins. This morning I'm going through, page by page, checking out the mag, and I find an editorial by Angus Mackenzie, entitled "History Lesson", and I swear, this man somehow got inside my mind and published what I (and others) have been thinking and posting here for years. Here are some excerpts: "...Henry Ford: 'History is more or less bunk. It's tradition. We don't want tradition...' The irony is Ford Motor Company might be in a whole lot less trouble right now if the folks who r…

Could be any form of automobile just as long as it's made in America(or the company is). Doesn't have to be a car, truck, or suv. Could be a motorcycle, 4 wheeler, plane, I don't care as long as it is American! Whatcha got?

I've said every so often that I love the Pontiac GTO; although I actually fell in love with the Monaro first, because I was in OZ when I first laid eyes upon it, and was then lucky enough to take one for a (slightly illegal) spin. Now, I should have the means to pick one up used, especially with Canada's currency parity with the US Dollar. However, my problem is, is that I have learned that for whatever reason, the Government won't allow people to import the GTO into my country. So before I give the agency responsible for the regulations a call, I was wondering if anyone knows why the GTO isn't allowed into Canada, or even better, if anyone knows some way that will le…

Took a drive along the Lake Erie coastline through various small towns out to the Marblehead Peninsula to see the lighthouse...stormy weather, 60 degrees but looked more like a November storm at sea. Didn't see too many interesting cars, but one that I noticed in particular was a '71 Chevelle--pale yellow w/ a black vinyl top--was going slowly on a street in Sandusky and making horrible grinding sounds like the driver was struggling to get it in gear.

Me and a few friends (Sixty8, speedingpenguin, etc.) have been toying with the idea of going in on a pre-war vehicle (car, truck, panel truck, doesn't matter; just has to strike us) together and making a low-budget hot rod out of it for quite some time. We want it to be something unique and different, i.e. not a Ford or Chevy or Dodge. Recently I stumbled onto something that certainly fits that bill, but it is incredibly rare. Not like Duesenberg rare in terms of value or desirability, but something still incredibly rare. It's beat to death, rotted to death, but still there enough to be saved with a bajillion hours of metalwork. Its original chassis with all its running g…

Would it be to much to ask that when a thread is closed/locked by an Admin, that the reason is given for such action along with who locked it. The following thread was locked with no reason given as to why it was locked. It clearly was marked Political. I understand that sometimes anonymity is a good thing sometimes, but not when a thread is closed/locked. The following thread was locked and as far as I can tell no reason was given. Thank you. I hope all Obama supporter's don't think this way..., [political]

With the purchase of my new Canon Powershot SX10 IS, of course I had to take some test photos. I haven't really had the chance to take any serious, directly motivated shots with it yet, however. Just random ones seeing what it can do. I know Dodgefan wanted to atleast see some of these. Me and my camera: Random inside/outdoor, day/night, sharply focused/landscape... and my two Boxers. Some shots using the Macro setting:

I'd love to see someone make a retro cell phone. I want to be able to pull my sim card out of my Blackjack and put it into a modern Motorola brick phone. Just for nostalgia sake, I'd also like to see Nokia re-introduce the 5165, those were fantastic. Green screens and button lights, those awesome faceplates that could be switched quickly and cheaply, they were just awesome! Holy crap! My prayers = answered

I got bad news last night (phone calls after 9pm are never good) that my older brother had died at age 72. We had been estranged for years, esp. after our mother's death almost 6 years ago. He had a lot of issues in life, but I have to try and look at the positives--he got me into model cars 40+ years ago and got me into '60s rock music, Mustangs and '60s muscle cars. He could be a really unpleasant and difficult individual, but was still family. I'm sure he left no will, so now comes the messy aspects of cleaning up and clearing out the family farm (which I own 1/3 of), selling his car and motorcycle collection, cleaning up the property and selling it...

Well to make a long story short, two years ago I had a transmission fluid flush done on the Riviera at around 85K miles. At the time there was nothing "wrong" with it, I just wanted to treat my car to a bit of preventative care. Well I soon came to find that my decision to prevent possible transmission problems down the road was actually the cause of them. Soon after the car was serviced my smooth shifting transmission started slipping into overdrive. At first it was only when the car was cold and once it was at full operating temp it was fine. This went on for awhile until it became more and more frequent, and began to not go into overdrive at all. Finances have be…

Toyota's 4th-Quarter Profit Rises 39% on U.S. Sales May 10 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world's largest automaker by market value, said fourth-quarter profit climbed 39 percent to a record, buoyed by a stronger dollar and rising U.S. sales of Avalon sedans and Scion compact cars. Net income rose to 404 billion yen ($3.6 billion) in the three months ended March 31, compared with 291 billion yen a year earlier, Toyota said in a statement today. The company predicted profit of 1.31 trillion yen this fiscal year, down 4.1 percent from last year when it had a gain from the rising value of its stake in Japan's biggest bank. Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe, 64…

Yup. A P71 Interceptor, likely in that black or dark, dark blue. This would be our third car and used mainly by my father for work. As I said in the 9C1 Caprice thread, this place around here - CopCarsOnline - seems pretty good an reputable. I've yet to check them out in person, but I want to, and for under $10k its a nice deal, especially with the heavy-duty componants and the spotlight so I can bug my girlfriend at 1:26am. I'm still hoping for a low-mileage PA Ultra, Aurora 4.0, Regal GS, or something plain neat like an 80s Toronado.

So I try to set myself goals every years. Some are realistic and I don't quite make it and some are a reach and I actually acomplish them. Either way I like making a list at the beggining of the year and do my best to acomplish it. Here's what I got for 2011... 1. Get a new job with a company that is more organized and pays 25-30 percent more base. 2. Finally finish my undergrad (I did college part time after my freshmen year) 3. Sell my car. 4. Move to Brooklyn 5. Get engaged. What major goals do you guys have for the year?

I've got a gig doing semi-full time work at the local Sign*A*Rama. First official day was yesterday. We're laying out the vinyl for a 15 foot wide sign for a Vietnamese restaurant. Funny, the place is called "Pho' 88 Vietnamese Cusine" (I guess 88 is a lucky number in Vietnam) anyway we're listening to Rock 101 and G&R comes on... "Sweet Child" which is my all time favorite BTW.... anyway I say under my breath something like "sweet it's Guns & Roses" Here's the funny part, the asian guy who works with me is amazed that I LIKE G&R so I'm like yeah... who didn't like G&R in the late 80s early 90s??? I still love G&R. So his next questio…

Wow, After doing some things today and finally just taking a load off look at pop culture in depth and watch some TV. Where the hell have i been. I fell like I was trapped in the 80's and now released in 2007. I feel So dumb founded. Hell Elton John turned 60. I no I have and "can't" have a social life, but damn I feel like a outcast. Stranded in a dead end job for the rest of my life. Although I have a reason i point my finger at every time something bad goes on. I guess I have to stand up take it as a man and be greatful. Is anyone in the same place? I guess I'm going to go for a long drive and just Think of what happened in 23 years to leave me so f@#king out of touch.…

The question: What cars & when used the E-Body? Don't start typing yet.... I believe a huge degree of confusion comes from those who confuse body designations with chassis designations, which are usually the same folk who want to call all BOF chassis' "platforms" as if they were unibodies. Chassis's, or frames, were NOT designated by the same body letter codes. The B-Body Buick rode a completely different chassis/frame than a B-Body Pontiac in 1960, for example. And FRAMES ARE NOT 'PLATFORMS' !!! "Buick introduces the prestige, E-body based, Riviera, as a 1963 model." --( http://www.gm.com/company/corp_info/history/gmhis1960.html ) "There was styling, of course: …

I signed up for an environmental class that dealt with environmental planning and stuff along those lines. I originally took it because it actually sounded kind of interesting and I was genuinely interested in the subject, but I dropped it like a yesterday's news, mostly because I realized I was taking too many credits (18) along with having an independent project and going to work about 15 hours a week. Just too much stuff to juggle. There were some real strong opinions in that class...polar opposite too. On one hand, you had the conservative ag/forestry/civil engineering kids and on the other you had the liberal political science/environmental studies/design kids. …

Reading some of the stories about "missed connections" and driving around town lately, watching all of the "non descript" daily drivers carry people to and from places ... and trying to decide on a newer car (be it a newer one for winter and road trips or an older one for winter only), I've been wondering how many people I see in the "daily driver" type cars are actually car enthusiasts, with a "sunny day" only car (or cars) at home, etc. In other words, if you have "toys" (namely, vehicles that are driven only on sunny days, etc.), would people know that you are an enthusiast by what you drive daily/to work? Or, like me, is one of your "toys" your current daily driver?…

I'm in the process of packing for a move and am getting depressed just looking at all the things I have. With me, it's mostly PRINTED MATTER. I've got: - travel brochures and maps to no end - real estate/housing brochures to no end - books from too much college level education - too many blueprints of plans from places I've worked (and those take a LOT of space) I'm actually doing a pretty good job eliminating them and it feels cathartic. However, neat stuff like old car brochures and ocean liner brochures from when I was a kid will go into a special file...it will be hard to find that stuff again. Do you hoard items, requiring beaucoup storage? Which i…

clicky Never thought I'd entertain reentering the world of truck ownership again (much less go through with it), but this truck really does something for me. The color helps a lot, and the short, squat look of the regular cab shortbed means it shouldn't be too much of a bear to live with. With the 4.8L it should get decent mileage.

Need some tow hitch advice: I want to put a motorcycle carrier on the back of an Avalanche. The carrier is rated for a 600 lb bike and weighs 97 pounds itself. One of these: http://amzn.to/2x1Hkc0 The bike I want to put on there is 485 fully fueled for a total weight of 582 after adding the carrier. I know much is made about tongue weight when towing, but I'm not really towing in this case, it's really just a platform with a bike riding on it. Can I put this setup on an Avalanche with a 500 lbs max tongue weight? The max tongue weight with a weight distributing hitch (which is not possible in this scenario) is at least 800lbs depending on setup, so the meta…
