I'm in the midst of reading Jim Hinckley's book, _Route 66 Backroads_, to prepare and plan this year's Route 66 Drive, September 5-16. I'm learning a lot about different areas in several states that probably should be explored ... when I have time. I'm also beginning to wish I could take more time for the Route 66 Drive...and, for that matter, road trips in general.... As I read the book further, I wonder what else is "out there" of interest to see in various areas. Our own "backyard" has plenty "treasures" to explore ... many more than we have time to see. This became apparent when I saw the PBS specials on Route 66 and the Lincoln Highway; researched other famous …

I think we need a different measure of how much a vehicle has been used rather than just mileage. I'm sure we've all seen those ads for used cars saying "All highway miles!", but I think in addition to that, we have to start to take powertrain setup into consideration. When I bought my Avalanche, it only had 12,800 miles on it which is insanely low for a 7 year old truck. But for all I knew, those could have been all city miles where the truck was idling and going through short bursts of acceleration. But I actually know it was mostly highway miles because these trucks also have an engine hour monitor on them. I don't remember what it was when I bought it, but I t…

  3. Sure, I have a computer and a phone. But I also always get a calendar from my GM dealer. And what a beautiful sight in terms of classic cars on it for the month of June. Voila: Come to think of it, for once, the Buick was the best looking of the Malibu-LeMans-Cutlass-Skylark fraternal quadruplets. The front and rear were clean and interesting enough. The side profile had nothing garish about it, including when closed up with a hardtop. And the dash had tasteful square bezels with small rounded corners. It came with quite a few engines. There were definitely 350s and 455s, but I learned that the 250 c.i. 6 was also available (read the fine …

As I've been tearing down the Golf this past week, I've found that my garage is quite inefficient for the work I'm doing. With winter temperatures, it's difficult to heat up. That entirely ancient iron wood furnace is slow to start. Just as much smoke will pour out around the door as the chimney. The first hour is spent tending to the fire as you keep the garage doors open to prevent the smoke from smothering you. Once its going strong, you close the doors, revealing a slight crack at the top of each. Another hour later, the garage will finally begin to heat up a few degrees above freezing. Without insulation and those cracked doors, that's basically all you can manag…

  9. Would there still be any interest in certain circles of enthusiasts for original parts catalogs on microfiche, or has the internet's easy access of information pretty much killed said interest? I remember a time not so long ago when people would search high and low for the little envelopes full of slides, but is that still true today? The reason I ask is I have some that I'm looking to get rid of, but am wondering what would be a reasonable price to ask for it all.

Here's the rule. You must use features, designs, and components from currently available vehicles. Stuff from out of production cars doesn't count. For example: Crown Cic body with a FWD CVT mated to a VW 4 cylinder TDI. The interior would feature a center gauge console and column shifter.

Question is, who will be wearing a C on their chest this year? Yzerman's gone, but that's okay because we still have some great leaders on the team, plus Stevie Y was missing a lot of games it seemed like. He'll be greatly missed from the game, though he'll probably be back in the office soon enough. I'm actually excited that Shanahan won't be around because he was only firepower and not much else. He was up there in age and not at the level where Detroit should be these days. Looks like we're trying to develop a younger te…

I found this Ball mason jar in the woods behind my house, and it had character (chipped mouth, what looks like a BB hole in one side). I've emptied it numerous times, so I know about how much it holds.... but anyone wanna make a guess how much is in here?

I'd say 85% of the time my car is backed into a space...about the only time it isn't is when I'm in a lot where it's busy or I'm in a hurry. My dad does it all the time and it's rubbed off on me. So, do you pull forward into a parking spot and then have to back out when you leave, or do you back in first so that when it's time to go, you're all set?

Unlike any other time I've fallen for someone, I feel this one is worth putting it all on the line for. Hi Kids, I'm trying to hone in my photoshop skills with various different effects. I've been running across a bunch of various logos with unique special effects (like gloss, textures, etc) and essentially recreating/modifying them. I decided I wanted to try my hand at creating a metallic look (like those used on Automotive badges) and two hours later, I finished my modified version of the Saturn logo (I decided I wanted to see what it would look like as a circle). There are a few physical design errors (like the angle of the "rings"), but what I need to see is if it looks metallic to someone who hasn't been working on it. Thanks a bunch! -JC :-)

The center stack has one big piece of plastic covering the whole thing, which felt cheap. Also the rear legroom was pathetic; there was more room in the Elantra and Golf. Also a serious lack of headroom. The Cruze is pretty good. It looks better in real life than in photos. The Camaro is too big. The Buick Verona is meh. It was spinning on a stand so I didn't see the interior, but the styling leaves something to be desired. I sat in an Aveo hatchback. I liked the little instrument pod a…

Leaving the parking garage at work today, I was behind a dark green Tahoe with the plate 'GEEKSTA'. I love it... Geek + Gangsta. This plate would be perfect for my friend Ken, who's a software engineer like me, but also a badazz mofo gangbanga playa gambla who gets all the honeys (at least in his mind).

I think it's time to move to Arizona... This is ridiculous. My Millenia was never perfect in the first place, but damn. Rust, scratches, a ding? Pisses me off. It always had a bit of rust on the right rear fender since I bought it, but it was barely noticeable. As soon as winter came, it started to get worse. After that, I didn't really pay attention to it. Well, yesterday, I happened to look at it and its so much worse, not to mention I now have some on the left side, too. I'll just let the pics speak for themselves. I couldn't get a pic of the ding, though.

I have a couple of questions as I have gained insight on how to put a V8 in a Fiero without having to cut the frame. First off, the engine is a 4.9L Cadillac V8 from an 88-94 Cadillac FWD. How relaible are these engines? Also were they considered Northstar or was that the 4.5L? Something I can't quite remember is if the Fiero 2M4 is unibody or is it body on frame? I will be getting the Fiero from the junkyard if this works out. I want to know because they will be quite rusty and the panels and underbody will need to be done. The 4.9L is from an 89 Deville that I am looking at. It is about $900 at a local dealer but they would take less. The body is really rusty but the en…

Being home from work today, I had a little time on my hands, so I made this PowerPoint graphic of the '86 Grand Prix 2+2. I will post a pic of the Z06 I did some time ago as well. Nice part about these being PPT graphics is that when you scale them, they stay looking good. Either I need to figure out how to make money doing silly stuff like this or find better things to do with my time.

  80. So Mr. Musk is in the news with announcing yesterday land agreements to start building the Hyperloop in January 2016 with completion in 2018. http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/technology/musks-hyperloop-moves-closer-to-reality/ar-BBhZvZV?ocid=ansCNBC11 My question is will it really change the way we travel? Will it truly get built from border to border or just a magic trick of distracting investors and the news from the poor performance of Tesla? Your Thoughts?

Finally! I've been at work but mentally away for about 2 weeks, today was finally my last day before taking a ton of time off. Looking back, I'm not sure why I bothered going in yesterday or today, but I did. Today was fantastic because we had out holiday luncheon which took up about 3 hours of my time, add to that leaving an hour early, and I'm feeling all right. Just need to get through tomorrow and Thursday and I'm off the the beach for a week.

I have a POSSIBLE source for some used safety equipment. Said Possible, don't get your hopes up yet. But possible. Checking out problems/issues with running an autotrajic in a race like this. Speeds at LeMons are a good bit slower than a typical SCCA/NASA type race, so I am much less worried about things than I was the last time I posted. Tend to be a guy who worries about and over analyzes everything....however...that has served well for the 44 years I've been on the planet. Looking into cages if we do run…

I am almost done with the 2010 Recount of my ad collection. Done to date: Chrysler (944), Ford (1347) and GM (3444) are done, and the independants are mostly sorted & awaiting counting (est: 350), then the dreary foreign ads will be the only thing left (est (200). That's a total of around 6300 ads. Yes, I'll get to those request in short order. I went thru maybe a 16-ft tall stack of National Geographics and de-bound them to get clean, full-sheet ads out. Those are all processed..... but being 'in the groove', I am eyeballing a 16-in stack of Motor Trends & C&Ds from '02-08. Lots of decent, performance-oriented ads there, and my post -say- 1990 ad count is pa…

Been meaning to ask this question for a while- wondering if anybody could provide me with some insight. With the real estate market in the crapper and some pretty cherry foreclosure deals to be had, my folks have finally started seriously thinking about buying a place in greater Phoenix. This would be basically a vacation home sort of aim (Condo + Garage most likely) of course there are other things to deal with in setting something like that up. My dad wanted me to see if I could find out what vehicle registration laws are like in Arizona which would be determinant on whether we bring a vehicle down or buy one there to put in the garage. Obvious preference would be…

I was walking to my 12:40 class today when I noticed green clouds moving in a swirling motion. I got to my class just as the wind was starting to pick up and the rain was beginning. A few people were behind me and I tried holding the door open but the wind was so strong that it kept blowing shut. I figured it was just a really strong thunderstorm, but it turns out that a weak tornado touched down in the center of campus with 83 mph winds. Eight people were injured by falling tree branches. Lots of trees are down but there is minimal damage to buildings. People came into class completely soaked and covered in dirt since there was dirt from a construction site nearby …

On Lincoln Way in east Ames, a few stations are currently having some type of gas war. Right now, regular unleaded is $2.09 per gallon at the Citgo, Casey's, and Phillip's 66 all right by each other. About half a mile west is a BP where 87 is $2.48, and further west most stations are averaging $2.50. It's crazy...I filled up my car for less than $30 for the first time in months!
