The Holden grant goes towards four projects involving hybrid development, researching fuel economy and alternative fuels, research into cabin design and development of its global design process. Mr Laird said the projects were all long-term and centred on Australian-built models. "They give us the opportunity to do research for the next generation of vehicles beyond VE," he said. The research will investigate whether a new hybrid transmission from General Motors will fit into the VE Commodore, according to Holden sources. The transmission has been jointly developed by GM, DaimlerChrysler and BMW, and claims to be more efficient than Toyota's current system. > Full …

A while ago, wasn't it mentioned that the Maxx is departing? Can Pontiac fetch it instead? Not an "extended sedan", but just a version of the G6 Sedan that has slightly longer roofline, and a trunk that opens with the rear windshield, and slightly adjustable rear seats? It'll compete directly with the Mazda 6 Hatch. And while we're at it, Chevy will get a Malibu Wagon instead.

This is/was a local Olds dealer in my town. They just covered up the "Oldsmobile" and "Aurora" signs on their awnings, but still have this "Rocket" neon light in the window. This is the first time in years that I've actualy seen it lit up. They are turning the dealership into a used car/UG truck dealer and a repair shop is moving in. Right now inside there are older Vettes, a 1st gen Viper, old Falcon. Just thought I'd take a pic of it thins morning to share...

Well since the 2007 G6 is more of a dissappointment, and an effort to bring C&G back to dignity and less pointless bickering, here's a 2008 G6 wishlist... - Interior refresh: better centre console, larger and lockable glove box - HID Xenon with levelling system as factory option - Strut Tower Bar standard (why on Earth does the Malibu has it when it's family sedan, and the G6 not even on the top model when it's the sport sedan?) - Available 5-speed or 6-speed manual on ALL models - 2.4L Ecotec, fix the power - MP3 CD standard on all models and Aux in, preferably a system similar to Infiniti's with CD ripping - Push button start (new Altima has it, at lea…

My friends mom is selling her 97 Grand Am 4 door 3.1 and I'm thinking of buying it for the wife. She bought it new and the good part is it only has 45,000 miles on it. The car has never had a rough day in its life, just driven locally by an older woman. Even though it has low miles she had the dreaded intake manifold leak but had that replaced last fall. It also has new brakes and comes with 4 winter tires on rims. I can get it for $4000 Canadian (about 3300 U.S.). Should I Go for it or pass? I am aware of some of the issues these cars have but figure with such low mileage this car should be good for a while.

Saturn Vue Green Line Gets Lowest Hybrid Suv Price, Best Suv Highway Fuel Economy Rating New hybrid MSRP starts at $22,995; receives official EPA highway rating of 32 mpg Detroit -- Saturn announced today that the new 2007 Vue Green Line hybrid SUV will carry a starting price of $22,995 (including destination charge), making it the lowest-priced hybrid SUV on the market. In addition to its value price, Vue Green Line will carry an EPA fuel economy rating of 27 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway – the best highway fuel economy of any SUV currently available. Well, can't say I didn't expect this exact review and to the T, but here's one of the first professional reviews of a real G6 convertible: http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti...E/60511007/1006 GM has never done a trully strong FWD convertible, and this one is no different--still has shimmy-shake and squeak issues. The C6/XLR and the Kappa's are completely spectactular though... Oh well, at least it does start under $30k and the hard top does have a "wow" factor...just try not to drive on uneven pavement and crank up the radio to drown out the rattles and squeaks.

Paying Off? Saturn will be GM's hot brand this year, Lutz says By JAMIE LAREAU | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek DETROIT -- General Motors' efforts to revitalize Saturn will pay off handsomely for the brand this year, a GM senior executive says. While GM's Chevrolet brand will still see the most growth in terms of unit sales, Saturn will experience the greatest "rapid overall percentage expansion" of GM's eight brands this year, Robert Lutz, GM's vice chairman for global product development, said in an interview with Automotive News. Lutz credited the expansion to the new Saturn lineup. Saturn dealers already are sold out of the new Sky roadster into next year, Lut…

*IF ANYONE FROM GM IS READING THIS* ---------- The generic, indistinct wheel design that debuted on the Aura XR is the one aspect that detracts from the production exterior's progressive overall appearance. I applaud GM for remaining so true to the concept's winning sheetmetal, but the wheels are unfitting of the design's otherwise athletic demeanor and hinder it's ability to stand out in an oversaturated market. Subsituting the wheels for a sportier (if still understated) alternative like those on the Sky or even the Outlook would accent the Aura's exterior far more effectively. The XR's current wheel design looks more suited to the XE trim, rather than the uplevel …

"At the New York Auto Show, back in the rear of thePontiac exhibit area, there's a blue G6 Pontiac convertible. It's not on a stand, there are no lights or models prancing around it, and there was no press conference about the car. I've known about this convertible for four years. General Motors has been talking about it for years. But it didn't come out when the G6 sedan was introduced in fall 2004. It didn't come out in spring of 2005, or last fall, either, and here it is spring of 2006 and there have been no press previews and there was no celebration at the N.Y. Auto Show for the coming convertible. My conclusion? They can't build it. The car has a metal folding roof…

Did you see what Peter DeLorenzo wrote in his March 22nd AutoExtremist? He gave a "negative arrow" to Pontiac and GM, stating "Word on the studio lots in Hollywood is that GM paid the producers of 'Mission Impossible III' $2 million for the 'privilege' of having a Pontiac Solstice blown to smithereens in a scene in the upcoming summer blockbuster - this after every other car maker turned them down cold. Now, that's what we call March Madness." Please tell me GM didn't waste $2 million on this. (Especially when Toyota would gladly blow up a Pontiac for free - ha-ha!)

Here is one for you: Brand new, never titled 2004 GTO 5.7 Automatic - sitting in Belle Plaine, Iowa. They have stored this car indoors during the winter months, and it is spotless! Done Deal - - Rebadged Opel Astra will come to U.S. at end of 2007 as Saturn Ion - - By HARALD HAMPRECHT AND RICK KRANZ | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS - - Source: Autoweek General Motors plans to import rebadged Opel Astra compacts to replace the Ion at the bottom of Saturn's lineup. The imports, starting at the end of next year, will sticker at about $16,000 - approximately $3,500 above that of the 2006 Saturn Ion 2 sedan, Ion's base model. Ion production is scheduled to end in December. GM declined to comment. But sources within GM and its Opel subsidiary confirmed an outline of the plan. Last year GM sold 100,891 Ions. That car follows the S series, which sold 200,000-plus unit…

I got the new dealer brochure for the G6 vert, and there is no mention of the trunk, other than to say the trunklid is dual-hinged, to open normally for trunk access, and rearward for top stowage. Looking at all the pics I can find, I don't see how the trunk could open "normally"; I just don't see the dual-hingedness, to coin a term. I did see in a Google search that the trunk volume is 5.8cu.ft. top up (for comparison, my GTP's is 15.5), and (eep) 1.8 top down. Pack soft, folks! (I wonder if my car care supplies would fit in 1.8?) Does anyone know anything, have any pics of normal trunk opening, etc.? We all remember the long thread here about the "design flaw", fo…

Does anyone have any ideas why the GTO gets such bad highway MPG? The Corvette with the same 6.0 liter engine gets an EPA estimated 18/28, but the GTO gets an EPA estimated 16/21. I realize that the Corvette is approximately 500 pounds lighter, but that hardly seems like enough weight to offset the difference in MPG. The axle ratios for both are pretty similar, so I'm kind of scratching my head. I am considering buying a GTO, but with gas prices as high as they are I would like to hear from someone that owns one to find out what kind of gas mileage they are averaging.

"Not so much a maxi Miata as a Corvette junior petite." Overall, they liked it more than the Solstice. Some notable quotes: "... the Sky's base price of $23,690 is $3200 higher than the stripper Solstice's. The extra nip gets you air conditioning, ABS, cruise, power everything (except the top, which is manual in all Kappas), keyless entry, floor mats, an alarm, and OnStar for a year. Taken together these options cost $3355 on the Solstice..." "The [sky] exhaust is slightly quieter, the top insulated with another layer of acoustic material. I'll be graduating from college soon. Hopefully, I'll be in the market for a new ride in the next few months. I'd love for it to be a Solstice, but I'd rather not pay an outrageous price for one. Have the prices on Solstices been reasonable in general, or have dealers been pricing far above the MSRP? The payments should be reasonable at the retail price, but I'd rather save some $$$ and go with an MX-5 if the dealers are giving significant mark-ups.

Saturn was orginally intended to be an All-American can-do brand. Remember back to the 80s when some American thought wejust couldn't build cars as well as the Japanese. So, GM developed a project brand of how to build an American Japanese car. It succeeded to the extent that it proved Americans can build great quality cars. This problably saved GM and Detriot from ruin. Bob Lutz said recently that Saturn will be an American version of Opel like England's Vauxhall or Australia's Holden. Well, Opel is VW's main German Competition. VW out prices all other non-luxury brands, including Toyota. This would likely mean Saturn's prices will sky-rocket to match those of VW. If …

I want one. I want a G6 convertible, OK? It’s vanilla-plain-looking, has funny proportions, limited practicality, and dammit I want one. I tried to resist, I was all “It looks like a Toyota Solaaaaara, ewww, no thanks,” but now I want one, and it's getting strong, this desire. I’ve been looking at lots of pics of the G6 vert, and I think I like it’s styling better than the coupe, which looks like a hatchback. (I will have to see one in person tho.) Fountain of Youth: Solstice Drives Down Average Age of Pontiac Shoppers Date posted: 04-18-2006 BANDON, Ore. — Pontiac, on the shoulders of its popular Solstice, saw the biggest decline in shopper ages — from 54 in the first quarter of 2005 down to 41 in the first quarter of 2006 — according to a new report by market research firm CNW. At the other end of the scale from Pontiac, Korean automaker Kia took the lead in snaring older customers. The average age of Kia shoppers in 2006 is 35.5, compared with 30.3 years in 2005. CNW interpreted that as "good news" for Kia, because the brand "wants to move further upscale in both price and content so it needs slightly older b…

I didn't know if I should put it in the thread with the suggestions (so that we don't get off topic for anyone who still wants to offer their suggestions), but I emailed the thread to Lutz. Basically I emailed him the thread and told him about some of the changes that were suggested, and his response... "Thank you. Surely too late to make production, but there's always mid-cycle!" So, it would appear that he at least likes the feedback, even though we won't make an immediate impact. However, I don't see why the wheels couldn't be changed by production time. I think that we should do this with all of GM's products in the future. If we don't make a difference, oh w…

If the epsilons are getting the vvt 3.5L (impala's base engine), keeping it's near 220 hp, will this make the 3.9's seem amlost useless with it's 227 hp, or will it get the 6speed (at or mt) treatment it should to fully use the 3.9L's power? i bring this up since the manual isn't available for the conv. presently. yes the 3.9 has prolly more noticable kick to it, but could the power ratings could make it look foolish? what's anyone else think of this? anyone have any ideas, opinions, other than "why doesn't it have the 6 speed manual allready"? off topic and who cares how futile, i think i'm going to start berating msn autos for thier lack of easily found facts for…

Hi my name is Christy! I am looking for a old copy of the oldsmobile logo. I believe the logo was used 1897-1919. It looks like a crest (kinda like a police badge) with the words "Oldsmobile" written across it on a scroll. I have attached a low res version of it. I want to paint it on my dad's car for his birthday, but cannot find a clean copy of the logo. Anyone know where I can find a ( somewhat clean) copy of the logo I am looking for? If so please let me know: [email protected] I am about ready to give up. It would be most appreciated! Thank You!!! -christy

I don't know if this caught anyone else's eye: Horsepower (hp / kw): XE: 265 / 198 @ 6600 rpm w/ single exhaust (est.) XR: 267 / 199 @ 6600 rpm w/ dual exhaust (est.) Torque (lb-ft / Nm): XE: 244 / 331 @ 3200 rpm w/ single exhaust (est.) XR: 247 / 335 @ 3200 rpm w/ dual exhaust (est.) --- Why is there such a miniscule difference in power between the XE and XR trims? Why bother making the power output different at all if it's going to be that insignificant?

A wild 21st Century hot rod reincarnating Australia’s most famous car, the FJ Holden, was unveiled today at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. EFIJY is a radical pillarless custom coupe boasting V8 Supercar power under the bonnet, Chevrolet Corvette underbody and state-of-the-art automotive technology throughout. The ‘Soprano Purple’ paintwork highlights its curvaceous 5.2-metre body, reinterpreting the classic design cues of the iconic 1953 FJ Holden. It delivers retro, mumbo and gizmos in one glorious package. Obviously not intended for production, EFIJY has been a passionate side project for some Holden Design team members otherwise dedicated to crea…

We've all seen the original Outlook press images displaying the interior in a rather drab grey and teal color combination. Now, Saturn.com features a picture of the Outlook interior in a gorgeous black and tan combination with rich-looking wood accents. I'm thoroughly impressed: Likewise, Saturn.com has cast the Aura's interior in a new light:

Introduction By editors at Edmunds.com Date posted: 04-03-2006 When the Pontiac Solstice first appeared at the 2002 North American International Auto Show we knew we had to include this gutsy little roadster in our long-term fleet. It was named our Most Significant Car of 2006 even though it lost after going mano a mano with the current champ in this class, the Mazda MX-5 Miata. What is it about the Solstice that so quickens the pulse? Driving dynamics? Fuel economy? Practicality? A resounding "No" to all those questions. What seems to drive Solstice fever is summed up in this quote by one Edmunds.com executive who took the little ragtop for a weekend: "If I had an …

Here are some photo's of the new SSB Pontiac Solstice racer in SCCA. These were taken by a member of the Solstice Forum at the Indy Speedway for a GM ride and Drive event for March Madness. The car is expected in the SSB SCCA class and will receive factory support if past stories hold true. It will be fun to watch the Solstice compete against the Miata for braging rights!

SaturnFans have since pull this story. AURA Expected to be More Powerful than Competition According to SaturnFans the Aura will initially be offered in two trim levels: The XE will receive the 230HP 3.5L V6, while the XR will be powered by 275hp 3.9L V6 with to a 6-speed transmission. A 4-cylinder hybrid-electric AURA Green Line version is rumored for 2008. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I know that OHC engines are necessarily better than OHV ones but the portion of the general public that knows there is a different favors OHC engines. Not to mention the fact that I thought Saturn wasn't going to be watered-down. So much for brand differentiation. Even Olds used …

I've read that the Cobalt SS Supercharged now has kits out for them for more power. For $750 one can get 241hp at the wheels?!? Insane. That said, I'm curious if GM plans to do anything for us "bigger boys" with the 2.4l engine? I'd really, really like an after production turbo, supercharger (installed by the dealer) if the price were right from the General. I've read people have gained singificant power from a shorty header installation from Clear Image and they also have a new turbo package set to hit for about $2200 (if I remember right). Naturally, I'd have to have somebody install them for me, but this car is more fun each and every performance option I read ab…

Folks, I really feel honored that you noticed my absence from Cheers And Gears. The reality of that situation is as such: This is a site for GM fans. I am no longer a GM fan, and for that reason I feel that I no longer belong here. I am no longer a GM fan for one reason: The dropping of Oldsmobile by GM. I have been an Olds fan for 45 years now, and I just feel that GM made the biggest mistake it has ever made by cutting Olds. Rather than making some insulting & derogatory remarks about what GM did with Olds, I decided to just quietly fade away. I now spend a lot of time at the site that Flybrian mentioned. ____________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

Asssuming that the tragic loss of Oldsmobile was meant to be. I was thinking of what GM could have done to make a smoother transition from Oldsmobile to Saturn. This assumes that Saturn is the successor to Oldsmobile. So, what would have been better for GM's market share than what happened, at least a 2 point drop related to Olds' demise and beyond. Any transition is highly risky but, I think mine would have been better. Based on Letters dating up to 8 years before the annoucement of Olds' demise. GM had prepared the ground if that needed to happen. GM first tried to assault the market with new products but, objective observers by 1998 showed that Olds' m…

It's official that the G6 GXP will be at New York in two weeks!!!!! Pontiac's G6 mid-sizer-known in some Detroit circles as the car that Oprah built-gets a high-performance edition at the coming New York auto show. The April expo will showcase the new 2007 G6 GXP, a spin-off of the two-door coupe(most likely the sedan and vert will make it to production also) that gets a 270-hp, 3.9-liter V-6 engine along with body mods. The G6 GXP will share New York show space with the new Mitsubishi Outlander, the revamped Audi TT, and a host of other new vehicles, most of which you can see in our New York show preview:

Again, at the G6 Forum, I heard from someone that a G6 GXP is coming. It has a HFV6 3.6L churning 270hp. Also heard is that the LX9 will depart, replaced by LZ4 from the Impala. If this is true, here's my guess: Base 4-cyl -> ECOTEC 2.4L Base 6-cyl -> 3.5L LZ4 (essentially former GT, base V6 gone completely) GT -> 3.9L LZ9 (Former GTP. GT is an overlap with the base right now anyways) GXP -> 3.6L LY7

Pontiac drops 2 Vibe models after '06 model year Jamie LaReau | Automotive News / March 30, 2006 DETROIT -- Pontiac will discontinue the GT and all-wheel-drive versions of the Vibe wagon after the 2006 model year due to sluggish sales of those models and changes in U.S. emissions standards that would have made them costly to redesign. Pontiac will continue to offer the base-model Vibe for the 2007 model year. It may bring back the GT and awd versions with the next-generation Vibe, a spokesman says. In a bulletin to Pontiac dealers Thursday morning, Buick-Pontiac-GMC General Manager John Larson told dealers they had until April and May to put in their last requests f…

I'm live and go to school in a college town (imagine that... apparently I'm captain obvious today too) I see MORE G6's than any other GM vehicle... They even out number COBALTS here. As we speak, there are 3 of them sitting in the parking lot of my apartment complex. Apparently it's a pretty BIG hit, ESPECIALLY among the young, COLLEGE set (Which are MOSTLY import influenced) Now I know this is just personal observation and that it doesn't mean jack in the grand scheme of things. But, it seems to me that GM has some positive momentum with the G6, especially in the audience that it is apparently appealing to. The coupe and convertible should only serve to further this.…

Here is what is on the web site for the LA Auto show Pontiac Solstice GXP The sleek new two-seater gets more power with the debut of the Solstice GXP, which features GM’s all-new Ecotec 2.0-liter turbo, the most powerful production engine in the Ecotec family. This turbo with direct injection kicks a V-6’s worth of power out of a four-cylinder engine, an estimated 260 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. It will arrive in dealerships this summer. This is what is posted so it looks lime we will see the small jump in HP like we see in most of GM's new intro's.
