What you've seen on TV and in the papers pales in comparison to what it's really like after Hurricane Sandy hit us. There are thousands of people who have lost everything... houses washed into the sea, entire neighborhoods burned to the ground, loved ones killed and injured. It will take many years to rebuild, in some case never at all. You can see some of the pictures here http://www.wbab.com/gallery/weather/hurricanes/images-hurricane-sandy/g568/#last So we find ourselves hitting every avenue we can to help raise funds and get help for the victims of Hurricane Sandy here on LI. New York AutoFest is putting on a car show fundraiser on November 25 in Commack, NY with …

At 1000 RPM, your engine is REVOLVING at 16.67 times per second. At 3000 RPM, we're looking at three times that, or 50 times per second. At 7000 RPM, we're speaking of 116.67 times per second. And those high-revving 12,000 RPM engines hit a completely outrageous 200 revolutions per second! Am I effing insane? Are these numbers completely off? I'm going crazy looking at these numbers. How the hell is that possible?! If you take into account that these engines are four-stroke, does that mean they're actually doing four times more rotations than they are revolutions? Or less?

I am about ready to buy a new car, and have narrowed the search down to a previous generation E-class, 2007-2009, or a used Hyundai Genesis 4.6. I am looking for rwd, and not really a fan of the 300C or the CTS, and don't want a BMW either. So that leaves me with these two, first up is a 43,000 mile Genesis 4.6 and it is under a 2 hour drive to the dealer. http://www.ncautoauction.com/detail-2009-hyundai-genesis-4dr_sdn_4_6l_v8-used-10629235.html The other option is a 2008, 69,000 mile E550 with AMG sport package and Designo interior package, so it is fully loaded, with a good carfax report, but I would be buying it without seeing it in person and have to spend $750 t…

I went to the mall this morning to get my hair did (1 on the sides, 6 on top with a fade), and noticed the parking lot was sort of full. Turns out the SCCA was having an autocross event in a cordoned-off section of the lot. Oh man, was that fun to watch! Mostly ricers with a smattering of domestics, the cars represented a wide range, from a PT Cruiser convertible driven by a middle-aged lady, to a new Z06 driven by a slightly thinner Santa Claus (car sounded WAY HOT going through the cones!), and a Lotus Elise (dude spun it, dummy). There were Cobalt SS/SCs, ION Redlines, a lot of Miatas, Mini Coopers, WRXs and Evos... even an old Lumina Z34 DOHC coupe with a 5 speed!…

First of all, I would have had Blake go home during the Bee Gee's week. Then, I'd have sent LaKisha home, leaving Jordin and Melinda going head-to-head in the finale. Who could have won between them, I would not care. Melinda has more experience and a larger vocal range than Jordin, although they both have incredible voices. Melinda might have had the better voice, though. Jordin has a younger presence, and still a phenomenal voice for 17 years old. SHe is more current than Melinda, though. Either of them woudl work, so Jordin's victory was well-earned. Now, regarding the actual Top 4.... LaKisha had the ability to stay another week, so I wasn't thrilled tos ee her…

...what looks to be a '65 or '66 Buick Gran Sport stashed behind a local Chevy dealership. The car appears to be very complete and solid and original - right down to the hubcaps. Faded paint (looks original) and worn out seats, but no visible signs of rust. Should be an easy resto.

Interesting thing today..... I was talking to a guy while standing in line at a Mcdonalds (nice long line). I noticed that he had a Silverado jacket on, so we talked cars.... Toward the end, he tells me he detailed his truck-even waxed the underbody.... Waxed the underbody? I might be able to see that if it is a serious off road truck, but it wasn't. I know I wash the underbody....but does anyone actually wax the bottom of their car?

I saw a Yukon Hybrid out on a dealer lot today (sorry, no pics) but the damned thing had 8 hybrid badges. One on each front fender, on on each c-pillar, the big-ass graphic on the bottom of the doors (god I hate that, worse than the "IROC" on 3rd gen Camaros) then one on the tailgate and another on the back window. Jesus, Toyota may run a lot of "we're green" tv ads, but the f@#king Prius on has one hybrid badge.

A friend of ours organized a car show for a local high school. Apparently, someone had a video camera and put a couple of video compilations on YouTube. It was probably someone from the Mustang club. The show was small, but it was a success financially and actually had a good turn out given the size of the school and the fact that it was an inaugural event. The only bad thing was that we all got sun poisoning. The '68 can be seen at 3:06 of part 1 and the '73 can be seen at 3:31 of part 1. Not a bad showing for their first time out of the garage in a couple of years. Around 1:16 of part 1 is our friends (The one who organized the show) very sweet '79 Trans Am. Part…

Well about two weeks ago a very reliable source told me some bad news... all department supervisors in my high school have submitted the name of the person with the lowest seniority currently employed (in my department, business education, that would be ME). While nothing official yet - school board election & budget approval don't take place until April in NJ - word has spread that there will not be enough money to fund both supplies and teachers for next year. My source told me this so I don't waste any time trying to find another teaching job (good luck I say). Then today after our faculty meeting we have a meeting with the local union president. She tells us t…

As some of you know I have an 05 Mustang GT. It's in near mint condition with only one minor blemish on the whole car andI take good care of it for the most part. That said, I've run into some situations over the last year that have brought me face to face with the ocassional disadvantage of owning a RWD coupe. My girlfriend and I, (we live together and are getting married in the next 18-24 months once we save some money) love going snowboarding in the winter. I'm a good driver and i can drive a RWD car in the snow but its one thing driving it around in crappy wheather locally in the tristate area then it is to take a 6 hour drive up to white face mountain with a…

I was in Berlin when the wall fell, I was 20 years old at the time, it is something I will never forget as long as I live. A lot of Americans take freedom for granted, they don't even bother to vote. As a man who has a foot in both North America and Europe, and seeing what I saw there, I have a greater appreciation for what can be lost if it's not held dear. The fall of this wall lead to German reunification of East and West Germany. The beginning of the Wall. The Wall falls in 1989.

Well, today I didn't have much going on and was going to drive out and see some tornado damage, but most of the roads were blocked off so I decided to go dealer hopping instead. The first place I went to was Willey Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in Ames. They had 3 Fusions, 1 Milan, 1 Zephyr, 5 Mustangs (all V6s...I never saw any GT on the entire trip), 4 Montegos, 2 Five Hundreds, and 3 of the new '06 Grand Marquis. The CD3 trio looks great in person...after seeing all three, the Zephyr is now my favorite. It's funny because I used to not like the Zephyr, but seeing it in real life is a whole different story. There's so much brightwork that really makes it sta…

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico - Mexico said Tuesday that it would file lawsuits in U.S. courts if National Guard troops on the border become directly involved in detaining migrants. Mexican border officials also said they worried that sending troops to heavily trafficked regions would push illegal migrants into more perilous areas of the U.S.-Mexican border to avoid detection. Can you tell me how just how you can sue over that?

Read this scenario then answer the poll above. I’ve found myself doing this a lot lately and wanted to know if anyone else has this affliction. You are in traffic. A car is looking to get into traffic from a parking lot, side street, etc. in front of you. If the vehicle is a foreign car, do you pull up as close as possible to the car in front of you and huff under your breath, “I’m not letting you in Mr. Honda/Toyota/Acura/Audi/Hyundai/etc. driver!” Do you find yourself more open to letting in a GM, Ford or Chrysler product? It may be weird, but since I spend a lot more time in traffic, I tend to be more courteous to those who drive Domestic vehicles. I am not r…

I've done a search and couldn't find any topic on E85, so I have to ask is there anybody using E85? We recently got an E85 pump at a Kroger gas station in Carrollton Texas. It's running $2.52 per gallon. The brochure states it's 100+ octane, but I haven't been able to tell any difference in power or otherwise since I've been using it. This is my 3rd tank and I have noticed a drop in MPG.....around 3-4 mpg less for city driving. Haven't been on a trip so I can't speak for hwy/mpg, but I could manage 20 mpg/hwy on regular...between 65-70 mph. The brochures they put out are pretty cool.. It says: The American Fuel....Fuel from the midwest not the mideast. So far…

Trivia #1- This was a very ambitious father son project...and it has been used by every made of auto, from Ford to Ferrari. Father died at the beginning of the project, son was almost killed by the project....but yet every type of auto uses this THING they developed together. If your thinking along the lines of Piston, you are wrong, as the Mazda RX-7 and RX-8 use this, and they don't have pistons...if your thinking steering wheel the 1903 Curved dash Olds used a tiller and used this..so steering wheel and windshield fail. This was used by the 1962 Grand Prix and 64 Bonneville of Balthazars fantasy, the SS El Camino of Camino's fantasy, the GMC truck in Rogers fantasy…

So if you would please: List any and all new vehicles purchased while being a member of C&G. Certified Pre-Owned from the same manufacturer's dealer is cool too, just mark the car with (CPO). If you have a family/friend member that bought a new car and selected partially from your recommendation, include that car too and include the relationship to you. For example: Myself 2004 Cadillac CTS (New) Mother 2009 Ford F-150 King Ranch (CPO) Co-Worker 2005 Pontiac Vibe (New)

Got a Dell catalogue in the mail not long ago and looking through it really makes me want one. They're cheap and better than this 8 year old Gateway POS by a long shot. Interesting article in car and driver... http://blog.caranddriver.com/why-honda-is-in-even-more-trouble-than-you-think-deep-thoughts/ To many observers, Honda appears to be going through the corporate equivalent of a mid-life crisis. Supply problems from the effects of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and flooding in Thailand, along with less-than-complimentary write-ups on the new Civic by Car and Driver, Consumer Reports, and others, are bearing the brunt of the blame for the slump in calendar-year 2011 sales. Further issues: Acura’s inability to attain tier-one luxury-car consideration or status among consumers, Honda’s attempt to build a pickup truck, and the fir…

At 5 pm today, two blocks from here, a young man inexperienced on his motorcycle lost his life when he was hit by a car. Both people involved are residents of my development. Witnesses said his head was almost off his body and that it took a long time to get the blood washed off the hot pavement. I feel so bad for both families. Just senseless loss. Another example of why I do not like motorcycles.

Science has discovered the heaviest element yet known to man. The new element is Governmentium (Gv). It has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lefton-like particles called peons. Since Governmentium has no electrons or protons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction normally taking less than a second to take from four days to four years to complete. Gove…

It's hard to believe I've been here this long. There have been times when I never wanted to come back to C&G and times where I never wanted to get off the internet because of it. I figured this show might be good watching considering the whole eco-conscious movement these days. Penn Jillette and his partner, Teller spend about half an hour debunking Hybrid cars and investigating Nuclear Power. It also has Lesbians, but unfortunately for Reg, there's no nudity. Language is kind of coarse, but it's good watchin' if you have a half-hour to burn. I couldn't help but notice Honda's advertisements for the Odyssey- stuff like "The Van is BACK" and "Respect the Van" along with all of the crazy psychadelic colours and whatnots and think to myself, either Honda is trying to appeal to new "hippies", people of the 1960's/`70's, or of course, nothing like the classic clam bake in a van, eh? Let's get one of those. Any other thoughts?

I'm looking for a new place to live and went to see a condo the other day. The landlord, Sanjay, has quite a nice place. The first problem was the price. His ad said $1249. When I got there, there was a surprise $150 home owners association fee. Almost every other place I've seen, the owner pays that fee. Sanjay wants to pass it on. Whatever, strike one. Now the BIG problem. He starts asking me if I'll be living there alone or will I be living with my "fiance or girlfriend." In the 10 mins or so I talk to him, he brings it up 3 times and always uses the words "fiance or girlfriend." The way he said it felt like he was fishing...basically to make sure I wasn't gay. Maybe…

Also if it would at some point can they be removed or at least the module? I did try the remote start, aux button with does the trunk and the lock and unlock and had no problem with it. The sy…

In your opinion, what features/characteristics (measurable) should all vehicles from each brand have or at least always have as an option? Feel free to distinguish between trucks/cars, but otherwise it should be the same across the whole brand. A few of my opinions as Examples: Cadillac: HID projector headlights, LED signal lights all around, offer nav (maybe should be standard) Buick: LED tail lights, fog lights, offer nav Also feel free to do this in reverse, like: Nav: Cadillac (standard), Buick (always available option), GMC (always available option) So, what do you think? Let's stick to the remaining brands for simplicity.

Well, our first big storm of the winter will be hitting tomorrow and I am still waiting for my snow tires to ship to the tire store. I had my first taste of snow and ice in the LS a few days ago and quickly learned how not to drive. I had two fishtails while turning a corner onto a downhill street but recovered easily from both, but not without making my heart race a little. I used to drive an E-350 for work and had to take it out in the snow a few times (many years ago), but it is a big difference driving a cargo van with 2500 lbs of meat loaded up in the back. This weekend I went to Menard's and bought two 70 lb sand bags in addition to the 35 lb one that came with …

I spent the entire day yesterday on the beach at Assateague, near Ocean City, MD. For my trip home, I decided to come back through my old town of Easton, MD, to check out the GM dealership I worked at for 10 years before moving to PA in 2003. It went out of business and has since been sitting empty, I guess it's been about a year now. I was glad to see an area dealer group's name on the front of the building, and new Chevys and Cadillacs once again sitting for sale out front. I hope they can make a go of it, as the old owners were a local fixture for decades and the location is ideal.

I figured "boys" would get you in here faster than "guys" :P No idea. Okay, another girl thing. This is something that Nick would post (no offense dude, I don't mean it in a bad way.. if I did, I wouldn't post this!) and I'm lost too. About 2 or so years ago I liked this girl, Katie, quite a bit. Her cousin's family (she's real close to her cousin's family) and mine were cool with each other and hung out. Well, I hooked up with Katie. It was a bad relationship all because I had no idea what I was doing as a boyfriend. I didn't call, hang out with her, or anything. I was terrible and I admit it to this day to anybody.…

Grieving her 11-year-old daughter's suicide Father's brush with police, bullies' taunts and threats to her new puppy gradually sapped a Winnipeg girl of the will to live By JULIUS STRAUSS Friday, October 7, 2005 Page A1 WINNIPEG -- For 11-year-old Kathleen Beardy it was all simply too much. First she watched as her father Kelly was handcuffed and dragged from the family home by two police officers. Then she was forced to endure the seemingly endless taunts of neighbourhood bullies in her tough Winnipeg district. Finally, her delight when she bought a small puppy for $2 turned to dismay as bullies made off with her new pet, telling her th…

Yes, that's a Sabbath reference. Here's one change I made just 15 minutes ago. HD Radio is the shit. The Hurst T-handle shift knob also improved the throw of the shifter over that pathetic leather-covered billard ball. Sorry for the low-res pic. My iPhone is only a 3GS (still better than the 4 IMHO).

I present to you my weekend, which consisted of replacing my spark plugs and wires as well as those on my father's car. I must compliment GM Powertrain in the design of the 4.0l Aurora V8. On the surface, looks hard beyond the even row of plugs which are right up front on the aluminum block... However, the ends have these nifty little pulltabs that allow easy removal... And the odd-numbered plugs that look impossible to replace because they're mounted behind and below the coil pack (which itself has several control module above it) is extrodinarily easy because the coil pack can be unplugged and unbolted in minutes... Total time from hood pop to hood shut (inclu…

Let's hear some. Good or bad. Doesn't matter. Las Vegas...long weekend...not that warm, shucks...love the starkness of the desert landscape but wouldn't want to live there....there's a lot of low-life around (what do you expect in a gambling based town). Took the last flight back up and it ran late, so today at work was B...A....D.

It seems to be the topic of the day, so what're your thoughts on it? Here's a link to a video of part of it and a news discussion: http://video.msn.com/v/us/v.htm?g=51ada60c...t=s3&f=06/64&p= And this may or may not need to be said but just to be safe, keep it civil.

Well, as I alluded to in this thread, I had some pretty big plans this past weekend. My father and I drove 5.5 hours to Cortland NY for an estate auction. The reason for this journey: a 1969 Corvette convertible...yellow/black, 350/300 engine, auto, factory a/c. The body was a little rough and it needed some interior bits, but everything was there and the frame was good (C3 frames tend to rot around the door sills and in front of the rear wheels). For the right price, it would have made a worthwhile project, along with accomplishing my goal of owning a Corvette before I die. Now here's where it gets interesting. We had with us the Corvette Black Book, which had the engin…

I say Toyota Camry/Avalon or some other non-exciting Toyota. Not saying that Supra, Celica & MR2 drivers are angels but they tend to be about average... not better or worse than most. Me and XP had this conversation after we noticed on a few road trips that about 60-70% of all awkward driving situations were caused by drivers in Toyota cars. They cut people off, have no concept of the blind spot & to make matters worse in some cases they're clueless & jerks. A very bad combination on today's roads. Your feelings on this matter?

If my parents give in I may have my own car. Its a Buick Regal Limited with the 3800 V6. It is a two-door as well and I think it may be a 1991 or 92. I am checking out the price tomorrow or sometime this week. It is in terrible condition but since I cant drive, I will spend time trying to fix it up. I have pics as well. The interior is leather but the front bench seat is torn badly and the body is alright. The car has rust but it isn't too bad but it is more then I would like. When I go back I will check out the price and if it runs. I also will have to find a way to get it home. Anything I should watch out for? This car also has an analog speedometer not digital. Here ar…

Trivia number two...I am thinking about a race car driver... Race car driver was an SCCA member...and the first race they ran was in a Ford Pinto...which was promptly sunk into an on course lake during the drivers first ever race. Driver towed the P{into home and actually used the oven to dry out the windshield wiper motor and a bunch of other parts...and then drove it to work the Monday after it was totally submerged. This driver was most noted for racing Mustangs....but also ran at the Indy 500. Driver qualified well, and won an award...but never won the race. Driver set a track record at Talledega in a NASCAR prep Thunderbird that to this day the Monte Carlo has n…

My current daily driver (as most of you know) is a 2001 Ford Focus ZX3. Recently I ran across a Trans Am that looks to be in my price range (finally) So, I'm going to drive the Pontiac tomorrow and if I can swing it I *might* trade. But I'm really attached to the Focus and it's excellent gas mileage. THE BREAKDOWN 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 * 2.0L DOHC I-4/ 5 speed manual * 84,900 miles * Excellent gas mileage/Generally fun to drive * Paid off in roughly 2 years * Positive equity 1998 or 1999 (Not sure which) Pontiac Trans Am * LS1/ 6 speed manual * 85,000 miles * All the options including leather * $8900 takes it home * Not a WS6 unfortunately The main thing about…

We've all seen car crash tests, so here is a video of locomotive crash tests. Turn your volume down if you don't wish to hear cheesy disco music These locomotive crash tests were performed in the 1980s after a series of fatal (to the engineer) crashes. The DOT wanted to see how different cab designs reacted in various crash scenarios. They were also testing for something called "climbing"... that is when the impacting vehicle climbs up and over the impacted vehicle. one of the results of these tests where the "safety cabs" we see on virtually all modern freight locomotives. Apparently it made such a difference to the safety of the crew, that when older locomotive…

Just thought id throw another thread out to discuss the Alpha Platform We have two threads about the MT article about pontiac not getting an Alpha... i call especially since Lutz discredited it.... Im really interested in the platform, as it may signal a return to cheap, fun RWD cars What i know so far... Cadillac is the obvious reciever of the platform, sub CTS car Pontiac should and almost definatley will get at least one variation of the car Alpha uses Kappa as a basis and the Kappa twins may eventually move to Alpha What i want to know.. Besides the possibility of the Sky/Solsitce on Alpha, will the Ponitac/Cadillac Alphas be Sedan only? or will mul…

LAS VEGAS - Japanese electronics conglomerate Matsu$h!a Electric Industrial on Monday introduced a 150-inch plasma television, which it says is the world's biggest. The new TV boasts four times better resolution than full high-definition 1080p picture quality and offers a screen the size of nine 50-inch plasma televisions. It was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas by Toshihiro Sakamoto, president of Panasonic AVC Networks. Matsu$h!a's new screen, at 12-1/2 feet when measured diagonally, tops the Panasonic brand maker's 103-inch plasma TV released last year. The 103-inch television has sold 3,000 units over the la…

Could you please send out a prayer to help my grandfather up to God's home? I would really appreciate it. He's one of the greatest, wisest men I've ever met, and he's everything a grandpa should be. He worked a really hard life since the time he was 16 on the railroad tracks, then the military, then multiple other jobs (including Packard and Chrysler, where he retired after about 25 years). About 8 years ago he had a heart attack and since then has been fairly weak, and just in the last two years he's been having many more heart problems. These last few months he's been incredibly fragile (but still mentally functional), and this last week he's been hallucinating and ju…

SO i was browsing through Volvo's website lookin at that cool new C30... well i decided to look at the S40... the 2.4L I5 NA engine that it has in it makes the EXACT SAME power as my nearly old 2.4L I5 NA engine. Now THATS PROGRESS! 10 years later its the same exact engine. The only difference is that the S40 gets a bit better mileage than my car, and im assuming thats because the S40 is smaller/lighter and has a 5spd hooked up to it instead of my 4spd.
