Alright, heres a real thread, asking a real question. A lot of times situations like this are hypothetical, this is actually happening to me. Some of you know the details of this, but I'm curious to get your opinions. I know I'm new, and probably most of you know nothing about me, but thats actually a good thing. It'll make you vote with your gut. These are my specs, this is what I'm working with, and I'm in this precise situation: Your winter/daily driver car gets totaled. You're given a little more than $3500 for it. For that reason, you pretty much need to stick to a $3000 budget due to tax and title expenses. There isn't a penny extra anywhere for the new car over …

Let me borrow from XP for a minute, because this pretty much sums up how im feeling right now: I get back from my camping trip and had a message on my phone from Fei Fei's cousin: (rough transcription) Hello Matt. We got the test done and the clinic called us. The child is not yours. I'm sorry if we made you worry. Goodbye.

Driver swerves to avoid moose, hits bear instead Motorist escapes uninjured but animal is wounded OSLO, Norway — A Norwegian driver who swerved his car on a rural road to avoid running into a moose hit a bear instead, authorities said on Thursday. The driver spotted the moose on a country road near Hanestad, 225 kilometers (140 miles) north of Oslo, around midnight on Wednesday, and tried to go around the animal, not realizing that a bear was also nearby. "The driver had lost a bit of speed as he tried to avoid the moose before hitting the bear," said Svein Erik Bjorke of the local wildlife authority, who was out in the forest searching for the wounded animal. "We ar…

Also, on the bright side, I finally have about half of my stuff moved into my dorm room at school. Thank God I won't have to commute all of the time. I also have my temporary parking permit (cuz I don't have my car). And, so far, I just know that although I'm going to want to scream, it will be a most worthwhile experience going to school and pursuing my career!!!

During my morning drive to work, I tend to listen to several different morning radio shows. On Friday, one of the morning duos posed this question to its audience: "What makes someone a Loser?" I laughed at some of the replies that were called in, including one guy that mentioned: "You're a loser if you don't cheer for the home team in a sporting event." Course, that was mentioned because of the upcoming playoff game between the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. Apparently, many Saints fans live here in Chicago. Plus, the "sentimental favorite" for the game is, of course, the Saints because of what happened to New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Though, that…

Just a quick update, since I'm exhausted and not only did it all happen so fast, it happened during me preparing, giving, grading, and filing for, a State Exam. I lost hearing in my right ear for a month. Doctors determined it was full of fluid, but why wasn't it draining? Turns out after tests and a catscan, there was a growth inside my head causing pressure and blockage. Anyhoo, doctor insisted it come out right away because it was large and of my age it and its location, there were possibilities of cancer. I went in, it seemed odd that both of the nurses attending me (one in Ambulatory Surgery, and one in the OR) actually spoke Italian. The last thing I rememb…

Let's say you enter a contest where the prize was a brand new 2008 GM vehicle of your choice (no MSRP restrictions). Well upon going down to the dealer to get the oil changed in the Cavalier this morning, My dad went with me and we decided to wait for the car, so we browsed the showroom to kill time. We checked out a black 2007 Cobalt LT that 'twas fairly well equipped and remarked that it would probably be better for my mother than the Maxx, he current daily car... I think, along with him, that the woman is just dangerous with any more than 4 Cylinders. We were treated to a 20KPH over the speed limit ride yesterday in the Maxx illustrated this thought pretty well... Well I knew that there were some late model DeVilles on the used lot and we waddled out there to check them out. We d…

"Once you trade in your vehicle to the dealership, you typically don’t have much power over where it ends up. And that’s usually not a problem, unless your truck ends up in an ISIS propaganda picture with your company’s decal still pasted on the doors. That’s exactly what happened to Texas plumber Mark Oberholtzer, who sold his company’s F-250 truck to a Ford dealer in 2013. While he tried to remove the company’s decal before the transaction, a salesman allegedly told him to leave it to the dealership to handle so as not to ruin the original paint. But the decal was never removed, and the truck was shipped off to Turkey before it somehow ended up in the hands of ISI…

Hey gang... I'm not up to par on BMWs, and my parents are considering buying a leftover 2016 or new 2017 BMW X3. Mom recently turned 65, dad is 69 1/2 and mom has desired a BMW for a while. They sold off their 2005 Saturn VUE and want to downsize to just one car (my dad has a '13 VW Passat SE that he wants to trade in). Any reason they should not consider the BMW X3? The X3 is the model in their price range, mom test drove the X1 and couldn't stand it. I can get her GM Supplier pricing on a GM CUV/SUV, but the XT5 is a little more than what she wants to spend and she initially wasn't thrilled with the Buick Envision (though she said she'd reconsider it and take one f…

Recently have become mildly obsessed with the twilight era for vintage junkyards, which is happening right now. I have developed a small cyber toolbox (GoogleMaps, GlobeXplorer, MapQuest, Switchboard) to gather before & after aerial pics of junkyards across the U.S. Mostly this is to document where they were and their size, but it's also useful to today's scroungers to assess whether a given sight-unseen yard today looks worth the trip. I have gotten adept at recognizing ex-yards from space. Many times these automotive DisneyWorlds disappear when one's back it turned, leaving but a faint scar on the landscape. I've been in about 15 different yards over the years- I …

I just had this thought today. The lightest Colorado weighs only about 3300 pounds. And it is body-on-frame and RWD. So what if you took a stock Colorado chassis (short wheelbase) with a 5.3 V-8, lowered it, and designed an entirely new body for it, making it into a light and powerful muscle car? True, there no doubt would be handling issues, with the Colorado having live axles--not exactly ideal. But then again, it could be really pure and fun, and could even tow 6000 pounds! What do you guys think?

So the Challenger can run on either 87 or 89 octane unleaded fuel and today I put about a quarter tank in it to see how far it would take me. Mixed mpg is rated at 20, but what I discovered was far more startling. The Chally only made that quarter tank last 30 miles using the Eco light in the trip odometer. A bit disappointed, I spent $50 bucks on a full tank of 89 octane gas and that just about tripled my mileage. After driving 40 miles the gauge hasn't really moved. The extra 11 cents per gallon (87 is $3.79 and 89 was only $3.90) might be worth it. But what I think is interesting is that I can remember 87 octane being of a much better quality than it is now, even at…

As most of ya'll know, I've been back from my weekend mini road trip to IN-OH-PA-MI last weekend, Aug 11-14, around my family reunion in Holsopple PA on Saturday, Aug 12. I'm already looking forward to my October road trip out west through AR-TX-OK-KS-MO-IA-WI ... and even my trip east in 2007 (around the MC Nationals and Monte MadneSS, if both are indeed scheduled for back-to-back weekends).... Does anybody know if Toyota in particulr is coming to the table with a cheaper RWD platform similar to Zeta or LX. I wonder the implications of a RWD V-8 Avalon to Detriot. Even more daring what about an answer to the Camaro and Mustang. It may be corny but, imagine a RWD Midsize Celica with a 3.5L 268hp V-6 and a 5.7L V-8 with 381hp from the new Tundra. Wow, this world is getting scary for a GM fan. Let's hope it take Toyota 20 years to catch this All-American Trend. Then, again they aren't exactly slow.

I'm home and have the time right now, so I thought I'd finally share this since it's still effecting me. On my way home from Detroit last Thursday after my English Placement Exam, I got to Chelsea on I-94 when my car died. Now, it wouldn't be quite so bad if this was the first time that it had happened, but it was about the fifth time that it's done it to me, and what pissed me off above everything else is that what the dealership thought the problem was turned out not the be the problem at all. I maintain that it's the fuel pump. On a long drive (I got to Detroit fine) it just eventually fizzles out on the Interstate. It gives a hiccup, and then the car just starts…

Found on Craigslist - This 1980 Camaro Mustang GTO Chevelle Charger Honda Prototype. What looks to us to be a thrown together combination of spare parts from the garage can be yours for the low price of $1,234 Canadian. That's right... 1,2,3,4. The owner believes it to be equipped with a rear-engine 450 (cc? ci? horsepower?) twin-cylinder. He also believes that keyword stuffing his ad's title will help interest some shopper looking for a Camaro or Chevelle into spending money on this. Three-wheeled cars have a long and interesting history. A new entry, Elio Motors, is in the start up stages using one of the closed manufacturing plants that GM sold during the bankruptcy…

WASHINGTON - Chrysler LLC said Friday it would recall nearly 300,000 sport utility vehicles to address potential braking problems while driving uphill. In a separate move, Honda Motor Co. said it was recalling more than 180,000 Civics from the 2006-2007 model year to fix a wheel-bearing seal that could leak and lead to a wheel falling off the car. Even though it does not feel like it in NJ (mid 80's the last week or so), I'm getting ready for the greatest holiday - Halloween. I usually spend all my time turning half my basement into a haunted house for our big Halloween party, but this year I decided to build some outdoor decorations from scratch. Meet Lloyd the unfriendly scarecrow. Got him up this morning to protect the house: And he will be soon joined by Harry out front: I'm pretty happy with the way they came out - newspaper, paper towels, chicken wire and duct tape. What are you guys doing for Halloween?

Saturday, I cleaned up the Cobalt to take some pictures. As I was driving around town, I noticed another Cobalt behind me, driving a bit aggressively. I came to a red light, and it pulled up next to me. I took a quick glance, it was a Blue Granite LT four door with a young Latin driver, windows down, sunroof open, blasting his music. I sat quietly, eyes locked on the traffic light. When it turned green, I laid a major patch of rubber and caught second gear. Next red light, I'm in the turning lane, he pulls up next to me, salutes, grins and says "all stock?" I said (a bit amused) "yeah". He looked at my clean green car with the new rims and said "beeeautiful..." I…

Spotted August 2 Wandered over from fast food land to a nearby lodging establishment. I am okay with color and it looks good on the car, but it's not safe enough for me to choose it for what could be a long ownership period.

I found this on a news homepage. Check out this link and hit the "slide show" Link to MSN article on American towns It lists and talks about America's "prettiest" towns (subjective). In a way, they probably tried to appease everybody and scatter them all over the U.S. The ones that don't interest me: (a) tourist towns on the California coast that you can't afford anyway (Monterey, Cambria), (b) ski resorts (Aspen), ( c ) towns which...ahem...attract people I can't relate to (Sedona, Santa Fe) The ones that interest me: (a) I stumbled into Burlington VT once (needed to get over to the US "side" from Montreal to make cell phone calls and go to Kinko's), beauti…

How's this for a crazy car desire? It's a Lancia Beta Coupe. Dunno why but I love the way they look. They're neat cars. I wonder if it's even possible to import one from Europe?

...a baby fox that is. The thing just wandered across the lane as I was heading home. I stopped the Tahoe and got out to check it out and the little tyke ran right up to me and followed me around. I called the other folks on the property and they all came to see. Finally, my employers' son-in-law just picked him up, and then handed him to his wife. She tucked him inside of her vest and he immediately went to sleep. Interesting end to the day.

I know this is way off topic here, but I figured *some* car nuts should know how to build things out of wood. I went to Home Depot and bought 12 pieces of spruce, 8 feet long each. I'm going to build a shoe rack and a laundry hamper. I cut 5 boards in thirds, and cut a sixth in 10 9-inch sections. The thirds go side by side with a 9-inch section at each end to form shelves. So I've used 1/2 of the wood so far. I want to build the sides and back (if necessary) out of as little wood as possible, so that my hamper can be bigger. Will 5 shelves screwed in to the vertical sides have strength? Will this design want to lean one way or the other, wobbling? If I do need a ba…

The member listing tells you what forum you post most in. I figured it spark some discussion to post the people in the top 50 posters overall who don't post in the lounge the most, as most members do. These people go against the norm in their obsession with these forums, here they are if you haven't noticed already: sciguy_0504: 23% of posts in Asian Marques (duh...) FUTURE_OF_GM: 28% in GM news VenSeattle: 17% in Current Buick Models (again, duh...) 91z4me: 16% in GM news The O.C. : 26% in Asian Marques (this one kind of surprised me) Evok: 44% in GM news Caddy XLR-V: 35% in GM news caddycruiser: 21% in Chevy Trucks (first inappropriate name :P ) BrewSwillis: 48…

My State Police PBA card got me out of 2 very serious tickets today: driving on the wrong side of the road and 'failure to follow the direction of a police officer'. >>Insert gigantic WHEW!! here<< Last time I had a road altercation was '97: a woman stopped short in a busy roadway right in front of me, I swerved and would've missed her completely (my left headlight clipped her right taillight), but a dump truck was parked & blocking the shoulder (so much for 'less-than-ridgeline-handling'!). Then, the officer said "I'm not going to give you a ticket" but 2 weeks later one arrived in the mail after an &#…

I'll let the pics do the talking.... Yeah... My mom wrecked the Blazer this morning. Don't worry... she walked away and is okay for the most part. Thank god. Anyways, it was foggy and the roads were wet... some deer were on the road, she hit the brakes and tried to avoid hitting them. She swerved off the road, hitting a bank and a huge rock. It flew through the air, flipped over, and landed on its roof. It then slid for about 20 feet. It looks totaled to me. Here's where she wrecked:

http://www.cheersandgears.com/forums/index...?showtopic=8529 First off, way to go Croc and Charger. Way. To. Go. Anyhow, I would like to apologize for starting a topic that turned into, well, an offensive thread more or less. I just thought that it was just pretty crazy that you could find a piegon to eat in China and not a single turkey in sight. (And it was Food Channel or something. It had to do with people...and sausages...and shipping them overseas...I can't honestly remember now.) Sorry if I'm just doing the following: I just don't anyone to make me out to some racist, pompus asshole. Sorry.

Growing up, my parents always had dogs. And in my lifetime, we always had at least 2. Starting around 2003 and through today, their latest clan includes (3) shelties. Commonly confused as "mini collies...small Lassie". Awesome dogs. 1 is pure bred AKC, female, the other 2 are purebred males from rescues. Varied in size. Parents live on the bay in southern DE, in a nice development with a mile long circle loop street around it, and streets in the middle. Mostly all retired, very nice, very quiet people and a mixture of well behaved dogs. Parents have a completely fenced in back yard that connects to a large rear deck, so the dogs can just be outside and safe all over the …

Sparked by the (hideous) Chevy Spark, there was an interesting chat session yesterday where a bunch of pics of unusual, little cars were tossed up. These are NOT my preference in vehicles, so in a way, I'm looking at these in order to find something I like design-wise. Bill Mitchell once said (...something derogatory about small cars, can't find the quote). Anyway, the Gub'mnt seems determined to get each & every one of us into one of these at some point, so maybe I can adapt to the idea if the design works for me (then again, I'd rather drive a '60 Fury). Gonna start off with one of Swordfish's favored models, the very very first saab from 1946, 92001: From this …

It never fails; Some online publication will create a 'Worst Cars of all Time' list that, seemingly, is pulled right out of their ass. Edmunds Inside Line may have just topped them all with their recent list of "100 Worst Cars of all Time". It's almost as if the IL editor in chief asked one of their writers to come up with the most controversial list possible. It's even complete with captions that are trying too hard to top Jeremy Clarkson's writing 'snark'. The list is simply beyond bad, filled with anything that isn't some variation of vanilla. That's not to say there aren't vehicles on the list that deserved their designation; there are a great many, but some of the ch…

Im so confused on which midsize pickup to get. I test drove the dakota, tacoma, frontier, and canyon. I like them all. This is a very tough decision. I did a quick run down on what I think of these trucks. Toyota Tacoma Highs: Nice Interior, decent stock sound system, high resale value Lows: ugly exterior Nissan Frontier Highs: 265HP V6, sporty looking Lows: Interior isnt all that great, transmission didnt feel right to me Dodge Dakota Highs: Good looking, nice size Lows: V8 isnt to powerful, V6 is weak, heavy GMC Canyon Highs: Smooth Ride, 5 cylinder engine, off road rugged looks Lows: Price, 4speed auto, resale value sucks My heart tells me to…

AKA: "Everybody's looking for something" ... Eurythmics ... 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)' Though I've always "strongly disliked" that "how do you see yourself in...." question because it can remind you of what you have not accomplished, dreams ARE how you see yourself in 5, 10, 15, 20 years.... Thus, some of my dreams: ...get married and have kids (not a chance of either thus far). ...purchase my own home in the outskirts of town (or country ... or small town) with a huge garage. ...add a 1975 Caprice Classic convertible and a 1987 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe to my auto collection. ...host a "permanent" radio show. ..."retire" ... so I can have time to more-fully…
