VW is being forced to change the minivan's historic rear-mounted engine because of a new Brazilian emissions law to reduce pollution that goes into effect in 2006. Production {of the van] will continue next year, but the van known here as the "Kombi" will get a new water-cooled motor and a radiator for the first time. I have to stop buying stuff mainly because it looks good. This damn thing has reset itself on me about 20 times today and I have no idea what the problem is. It's so damn irritating. I'd kick this thing to the curb if I had the money for a replacement lined up. Maybe it just needs to cool down but it's been grating on my nerves for the past 4 days. For future reference, is there a more dependable brand of router out there?

And is there a computer nearby with which you can download music and put it on the uncharged, fresh out of the box iPOD? Another story, they sell digi-cameras in vending machines too.

  8. Chevron hits oil in major Gulf of Mexico well Tue Sep 5, 2006 10:35 AM EDT By Mark McSherry NEW YORK (Reuters) - Three oil companies, led by Chevron Corp. (CVX.N: Quote), have successfully drilled for oil in the Gulf of Mexico's deep waters, suggesting there may be more oil in the region that already provides a quarter of U.S. output, the companies said on Tuesday. During the test, at record depths and pressure, the Jack No. 2 well flowed at a rate of more than 6,000 barrels of crude per day, Chevron said. That puts it on a par with discoveries in exploration hot spots such as the waters off Angola. With U.S. oil output in decline, big new fields are increasingly rar…

Alright, the old Lumina is getting long in the tooth (210,000) and it is time to start looking for a new ride. I have been looking at the LaCrosse as a potential replacement. I really like the 3.8 for the balance of gas economy and power. I will use this car for my daily driver and I average 200 miles a day for work. Does anyone here own one or have any experiences with the LaCrosse? I was looking at the CXL trim level and will most likely buy one that is off lease <30,000 miles.

  13. So the Tablet craze got me thinking, Ford has their whole Sync world with USB upgrades. GM has their version coming out MyLink, they have also their Android App to help you better interface with the VOLT. So with this in mind, what would it take to have an Auto maker decide to just have a 10" tablet holder in the center dash with a USB port. Just plug in your tablet and have say suction cups that hold it in place and boom. Up comes an interface allowing you to totally manage everything in your car. This way depending on how you interface to the world, via Apple, Windows, Linux, you have a nice to use interface and the abilityto customize it. I see this as reducing the c…

About a week ago, I found a broken hunk of a front spring under the car and told them to have their mechanic check it out since I consider it a safety issue. I dropped the car off and had a chat about it with the mechanic. I agreed with him that the proper way to deal with it was to replace the front springs and struts (original and at about 90k miles). No big deal, I thought - standard wear stuff. Wrong. I should have known something was up when I asked the mechanic for a ballpark on the pricing and he came back with a number twice what I expected: $1,500. The first issue is that everything is a s…

I took it to the GM dealer the other day and went to pick it up today and found out that the #5 cylinder has moisture and coolant in it. This is bad timing because I go back to school in a week and they won't be able to to get it in for at least two weeks. Also, the GM dealer here is being bought out by the Ford dealer, so it may end up being serviced over at the Ford dealer costing more money due to higher labor costs there. The GM dealer will repair it for $800, and another place we checked can do it for $650-700. I will be buying a new car in May, so my options are either A) pour $800 into a c…

This is one of the best, most well-written opinion pieces I've read among the car publication circles in quite some time. Take a bit to read this- Build the Brand, Burn the Brand and let me know what your thoughts are on the matter. I think it almost perfectly sums up my stance. I've said it time and again with regards to BMW, Mercedes, and the like. When you build and sell so many cars, your product inevitably begins to lose it's cachet and exclusivity that make people desire it in the first place.

Something we've all known for a long time now: the GM badges glued to the lower fenders and doors of every Chevy since 2006 are simply a waste of a few dollars that could've been spent elsewhere on the car. But it wasn't until I glanced up at that sign and studied the GM logo I finally began to understand why that one little blemish was such a stupid, oafish move. GM claimed back in '05 that they felt that the GM name didn't get much recognition from the public and the buyer. Period. So, in order to make themselves feel a littl…

The first was a current model Nissan Quest. OMG, what a disjointed mishmash of disjointed stylistic crap! The other was a BMW X6. I generally like fastbacks (even on the Honda Crosstour), but the X6 version just looks like excrement to me. Sorry for the crabby old guy bitching session.

It's not nearly as involved as another car. I'll eventually turn this: into a nice road bike. It's an Iron Horse Triumph Comp aluminum/carbon frame and fork, and it was a steal. The sad part is, getting this up and running will most likely involve dismantling my beloved restified Schwinn and retiring her if I can't find a cheap way to keep her complete. She served me well, finishing tied for 5th in a century ride two weeks ago. I'll probably ride the Schwinn through the summer and start hording the parts that I can't transfer over.

I hardly recognize the place - so much has changed. It is looking like at least one of my projects will be back in gear very soon, and I can't do a project without updating the appropriate thread with a blow-by-blow of the work and lots of pics. So I will be around starting pretty soon. It will not be right away, since I will have to switch-over to a new computer ( this one really doesn't function on C&G). Also, I need to get my camera back up and running first. That said, look for me to be showing up here more often in the near future.

This was posted on Buick-59.com by a getleman in the UK who has a 1959 Buick Invicta nicknamed "Ruth".

Saw a white Mercedes-Benz Metris minivan in window van form, first I'd seen on the road. Also saw a white w/ blue stripes tall roof Ford Transit panel van, with 'GT-350' stripes on the sides, black wheels. Also saw at the bank a black Rolls Royce Phantom w/ the custom front plate that said 'A$$HOLE'...lol. Also saw an old GM Scenecruiser bus in Red Bull livery..which I later discovered has it's own facebook page.. https://www.facebook.com/Red-Bull-Scenicruiser-113160381322/

My idea of Good may be different than your idea of good. the US ideal of "good" is likely different than that of a communist state. So what makes good, good? who is to say that either of us are right? maybe we are both right, but then if we are both right then there is no "right" answer meaning we can never improve society because ethics is relative. whats your ideas? ::edit:: for the purposes of this thread don't list anything from the Bible of "proof" of good, feel free to argue the same points as those from the bible, but you will need to come up with another way to argue them. citing the bible just tends to devolve into some flaming thread.

I was talking to my mom tonight, who is a 2nd grade teacher, and she was telling me about an episode at school today where a special needs kid starting throwing a tantrum. Under No Child Left Behind and Iowa state laws, special needs kids who would normally be in a special education classroom must be part of the regular classroom per inclusionary policies. When this kid was having a tantrum and throwing things around the room, my mom basically had to make the entire rest of the class leave until the episode was over as part of the policy. The teacher cannot physically remove the kid from the classrom, so the rest of the class suffers lost learning time. And apparentl…

LSR cars typically run some sort of ethanol blend or nitromethane fuel for maximum power, while the maximum outright speeds are achieved by jet-powered, rather than wheel-driven vehicles. Thrust SSC holds the current outright land speed record of 763 MPH while the 458.4 MPH wheel-driven record is held by the Vesco Turbonator. I need to do something during much more productive than doing odd jobs and failing at finding full-time work during this period of "downtime" I'm having while I figure out what course of action I should take during college. Perhaps a local firm will hire me and give me a decent salary plus commission. And say if the degree I obtain in college fails to find me permanent full-time work for a period of one or two years, this could be something I can fall back on. I wonder how long it would take to get one outside of an "online cours…

Boogie Boarding :: Nags Head, North Carolina "Going down da shore" is Philadelphia-ese for vacationing at the beach. It usually means heading to Cape May, Wildwood, Sea Isle City, or Avalon, New Jersey--great beaches all, with amusement parks and boardwalks and plenty of places for family entertainment. And many thousands of people do seek out these relaxation spots every weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day. But if you're "going down da shore" early in the season, when ocean temperatures in New Jersey are typically in the 60s, you need to head to more southern locations. North Carolina's Outer Banks lures many of these early vacationers. Read more at: http://aut…

Over the course of the day, it grew louder and was noticable under acceleration close to the shift points. Since I finished up work late, I had to wait 'till Friday to get it looked at. Took it to a local Gemini/Goodyear shop since I know the gents and they were able to squeeze me in as soon as they opened and they, well, couldn't get at it to figure it out. I call Scott Buick and they were apparently so swamped it wouldn't be 'till 2pm that I could take it down. Damn. Next stop, Dick Norris B-P-GMC where we bought our …

With gas prices and some media bashing of people using SUV's only for single person commutes, I was curious to see how many people use SUV's for those uses. My vehicle is a Chevy Avalanche. I work at home but have the truck because I pull a 22' enclosed trailer with it. I only put on around 8k-10k per year since I work out of home. When me and the woman go out of town we take her 32mpg Alero. 50% of the miles on my Av are pulling a trailer or using for hauling misc. items. The other 50% of milage is random local commuting. Therefore my catagory is Mostly to tow/haul. If I didn't have the trailer to pull I would have a car in it's place.

I got back from Montreal Tuesday afternoon after our flight was cancelled Monday evening due to hail in Chicago. It was a good time over there...I did a lot of walking and sightseeing. Anyway, here are some interesting observations I had while I was over there. Everybody dresses up all the time. Doesn't matter if it's Monday morning, Saturday night, or Sunday afternoon...they're always dressed to go out on the town. I have never seen a place where strip clubs are right next to shoe stores and family eateries. Rue St-Catherine and Boulevard St-Laurient had little strip clubs and sex shops nestleld in among all the "family-friendly" businesses. People don't have m…

Someone brought up an intersting point to me earlier regarding diabetics... Canola is a no-no...I havent really looked into it but diabetics are not supposed to consume canola because it is transformed into gluccose... Are we trading heart disease for diabetes? 6 or half dozen of the other??? Or more importantly- am I going to have to go to Jersey to get a decent french fry?? Dont laugh...you might be next.
