"Refinement does not equal longevity." Would you rather drive a purely silent appliance, or do you enjoy the feeling of machinery under you? I love to "throw the coal" to an entertaining mechanical symphony under the hood. Some people prefer to be far away from any hint of the oily bits. Which do you prefer? Why?

The auctions are over but unless you were in Scottsdale, you wouldn't know about some of the best cars to cross the block. Is the audience for SpeedTV so focused on Corvettes and Mustangs that they wouldn't even want to see the other vehicles? And what about the other auctions? I was walking to my 12:40 class today when I noticed green clouds moving in a swirling motion. I got to my class just as the wind was starting to pick up and the rain was beginning. A few people were behind me and I tried holding the door open but the wind was so strong that it kept blowing shut. I figured it was just a really strong thunderstorm, but it turns out that a weak tornado touched down in the center of campus with 83 mph winds. Eight people were injured by falling tree branches. Lots of trees are down but there is minimal damage to buildings. People came into class completely soaked and covered in dirt since there was dirt from a construction site nearby …

Hi all, After gauging the intrest on my 05 mustang GT and with some of my end of the year improvments to my finances I have decided to deffinetly go ahead and sell my car. I will be clear between 4000-6500 selling it via a private sale after paying off the ballance of the loan. I have an additional 3000 in savings that I can put twards a new car. I will be getting a late 90's early 2000s Jeep in the price range of 5-6k. I don't drive very much anymore and neither does my girlfriend milage wise but we both travel on the weekends and a jeep would be a lot more practical for our active lifestyles, plus right now I have to park on the street and while I can drive my mus…

They asked the chairman how many people have applied from other plants to transfer/work at his when a job opening becomes available such as somebody that takes the buy-out. The answer they got was shocking. Just three people have said they would move to his plant to keep their job. My take? GM is going to be royally screwed by the # of employees taking the buy out and it will catch them off guard in a big way. Watch for them to hire off the streets in the 4th quarter.

I wanted to spruce up my desktop a little bit, so I made a GM wallpaper that is an optimistic look at where the company has been and where it's headed. It's sized for my monitor, which is widescreen (1280x1060 I think) but could probably be used on regular monitor dimensions if the "stretch to fit" option isn't selected. ~800x600 Full size image: http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/9645/gmbackground2vd8.jpg

Okay, so the last time I was on, I didn't do much, but I know I responded to a PM. Then I noticed a post I had made had a broken Image link, so I hid it (as it was long since too late to edit it), and reposted with an image hosted on a trusted source that i know isn't going to break. Then, I responded to a post in the Member's Design Showcase. The kicker is, I came back today and there's no evidence any of this happened. The conversation I thought I responded to in PMs was still there, and I had left the person I was talking to hanging with his last question. The broken image link was still there, and the repost was not. The reply I made to the thread in the design secti…

I've noticed this for years, but thought I'd pass it along for anyone who might be interested. If you are straight, young and cute, you can make a killing as a bartender working in a gay bar. I got to talking to a 25-year old guy (I mentioned I am a car nut, and he is too) who went to college, graduated with a degree in finance, yet enjoys far higher pay and better hours slinging drinks than he could in the finance racket. In fact, the whole bartending staff at this particular establishment (the Blue Moon in Rehoboth, DE) is straight. I'd say they're being very smart to use their good looks working a fun job, making lots of money toward a secure future. Thanks for …

I'm currently taking STATS and CALC and I'm not doing very well at all. I have a lot riding on my satisfactory completion of these course and I was wondering if anyone had any magical study techniques or philosophies up their sleeves. I swear man, I can sit through a 2 hour Psych lecture and recite it word for word, yet I can't remember Calculus well enough to do the homework 30 minutes later. Me trying to learn this stuff is like trying to force water into a steel block, it just frustrates the hell out of me and makes me feel dumb. I was walking down the street here in Rome today when I stopped dead in my tracks. Normally I pass Pontiac vans without batting an eye, but seeing a Pontiac is rare here and something else caught my eye...a Chevrolet badge. It was essentially a Pontiac Trans Sport with Chevy bowties on it, they didn't even change the grille. I decided that someone must have done it themselves, that there's no way GM would just slap some bowties on a Pontiac and call it a day...maybe it was imported over here and the badges were missing? But after doing a check online, sure enough...the Chevrolet Trans Sport exists.

Well, as most of you know, I'm part of Kettering University and, in order to stay a student, one must complete about 6 months of co-op with a company each year in addition to the same amount of schooling at the university. Well, today was a co-op fair and I was starting to lose hope on finding a job since this was my third co-op fair and I've been to about three interviews. Well, as I was leaving my dorm to head down to "the fair," I turned around realizing I had forgotten my belt. As I went to reach for my belt, I felt my phone vibrate and didn't recognize the number. I answered it anyway and it was my co-op manager telling me that a company that I had interviewed for w…

While watching a new show on speed called pass time (which is very good) i have been introduced to a new form of drag racing. There have been a few electric cars come on the show. One was an electric powered s10 and the other was a pro comp rail style dragster with no less than 450 batteries and an electric motor that was the equivalent of 31 ci. Now being the big fan of big block power houses i am i totally underestimated these cars even though i am aware of an electric car on tv that i saw called "white Zombie" which consistently runs 11.5's. the pro comp style electric drag car ran if i recall correctly right at 9 maybe an 8.80. low and behold here are a few clips from…

I kinda happened across this old issue of C&D while I was cleaning some stuff. There are some real gems in here. The cover car is the Plymouth Pronto Spyder, which wasn't a bad looking concept car, kind of the Solstice concept before there was a Solstice concept, a lot of the part for the concept were plucked from existing Chryslers, mainly the Neon. The Upfront page is all about the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero, which they didn't give driving impressions on, later in the issue they test the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and didn't bitch about the styling or interior. Other tests include the 1999 Mercury Cougar, the Dodge Ram 1500 SS/T which they called "The last of the perfo…

Seems a normal human proclivity to want to be near others of your feather. When on a road trip, do you take note of other vehicles around you? Do you tend to form a convoy of good buddies and travel for miles, maybe mildly jockeying for position in line, but staying together in a ragtag group? Strangers traveling on the road of life together, separately, having never spoken, maybe glancing over for a split second to see who's who... And it all falls apart when they turn off, or when you hit the toll booths and they have an easy pass and you have to go into the "cash only" line.

The above video is all the reminder you should ever need to pay close attention to the signs posted on bridges all over the country informing motorists of their height. We're not quite sure where exactly this particular span is located, but it's 11' 8" height is a good bit lower than what seems to be typical. For this minor little engineering oversight, at least a handful of large trucks have been morphed into instant convertibles. Let's just hope that some of these drivers placed a check in the box for the optional insurance when renting their moving trucks. Thanks for the tip, Stephen! null - Watch more free videos Autoblog

I thought I'd give this Reatta for sale a free plug because I just feel bad for it... 1988 Buick Reatta - 63k - $7563 See, that car has been for sale at that dealership for over four years. I remember because I was showing it to a friend of mine shortly before I graduated high school in 2003. Back then, it had 62 and change on the clock and was listed at $10,000 even. I guess it accumulated ~500 miles from being moved back and forth between their two lots so much. Today, it was up in Palm Harbor again. I've seen it on eBay four times. I think they're still charging too much for it; $7500 seems pricey for a first-year Reatta hardtop in the all-too-common shade of red, …

For as long as I can recall, I've always dreamed of GM granting some of their fans one "wish"... and not just a free vehicle, but something along the lines of getting the chance, a'la Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory style, to see or do something that no one else in the public gets to do. Weight gain means lower gas mileage: U.S. study Associated Press CHICAGO -- Want to spend less at the pump? Lose some weight. That's the implication of a new study that says Americans are burning nearly 1 billion more gallons of gasoline each year than they did in 1960 because of their expanding waistlines. Simply put, more weight in the car means lower gas mileage. Using recent gas prices of $2.20 a gallon, that translates to about $2.2 billion more spent on gas each year. "The bottom line is that our hunger for food and our hunger for oil are not independent. There is a relationship between the two," said University of Illinois researcher Sheldon Jacobson, a study c…

Not sure how you all spent your Saturday, but...I spent it trying to stop a friend from killing himself. Earlier this week, his wife asked him for a divorce. That was followed a day later by a half-hearted attempt on his own life. He has a large workshop/garage as part of his automotive business, could probably put 15 cars in there. He drove a modern car in there, turned it on and sat there for 4 hours. If anyone knew that modern cars run too clean to kill anyone it would be him, but he did it anyway. Basically he did it to get his wife to talk to him. The next day, Thursday afternoon, he made a post on Facebook describing everything that had happened so far that week. …

I am putting up this poll because I can't decide myself. I really want to do a project car and create something unique but cost comes into effect. I either want to do an 89 Dakota, 318 conversion but this would be a long term project to spread out the costs and badge it as a Dakota SUper Bee or Rumble Bee. I also may take that Aries I saw a while back or maybe the one in the junkyard for cheaper and drop in a 2.2L Turbo from a Shadow or Daytona. Intercoolers can be had for it as well. I really like the Aries idea to surprise people at the track if I can get it quite fast. There is a 10 second Reliant out there as well. 1989 Reliant "Relentless". A RWD K car has been done …

Let's try to take the political discourse up a notch in this thread, shall we? Forgetting the personalities and parties involved, what do you want to see/expect from, our next president and congress? Issues only, please.

I believe in fires at midnight when the dogs have all been fed. A golden toddy on the mantle a broken gun beneath the bed. Silken mist outside the window. Frogs and newts slip in the dark too much hurry ruins the body. I'll sit easy, fan the spark kindled by the dying embers of another working day. Go upstairs, take off your makeup, fold your clothes neatly away. Me, I'll sit and write this love song as I all too seldom do. Build a little fire this midnight. It's good to be back home with you.

Even though Olds has been dead for a few years now, I still feel like I see a ton of them on the roads. Today I was driving to work and had an Olds Alero in front of me and an Olds 88 behind me, with an Olds Cutlass a few cars ahead of me in the other lane. Did Olds really sell that many cars in its last few years? Or maybe it is just a regional thing; the former Buick-Olds-Cadillac dealer (now Bu/Cad/GMC) has a pretty large store and does a lot of business here.

After a week of above average temperatures and a high of near 70 () yesterday, I'm now under a Winter Storm Warning. Crazy. It's Currently 39 degrees and raining lightly. The rain is forecast to mix with and change to snow overnight and continue throughout all of Friday and Friday night. The snowfall totals grow higher everytime I check the forecast. I was shocked to see a Winter Storm Watch up for my area when I woke up this morning. It really took me by surprise. I'm hearing 8 to 14" when all is said and done. The amount of sand and salt local road crews have used this year is insane. Trucks are already spreading salt in my neighborhood, even with light rai…

To Lexus IS350 with love, Why are your sideview mirrors so freaking large? You really have to see it in person for the full effect, but damn. I thought the Impala's mirrors were large. Did you guys buy a crate of old PrimeStar dishes or something? To Hyundai Entourage with love, Are you part of a Days of Our Lives plotline, because...I thought you were dead? Hyundai cancels Entourage Minivan Project And yet out of the cold, you straggle into Chitown. What gives? And why do you and your Kia sis feel the need to both be Odyssies?

For the past few months I've been strongly considering getting a second job. At my current one, management keeps reducing the Pharmacy hours and since I'm on the bottom, I'm the one taking most of the hit. For a while there, when the one girl quit, I was getting near full time hours. I was happy about that despite still being stuck at my rather paltry wages. Now I'm down around half that and it's really not worth it for all the more I make. However, in 3 or 4 months, my benefits start. I don't want to give those up. So this is where a second job would come in, essentially giving me the hours I want and putting me over 40 hours a week. I could really use the extra income. …

Motoring Memories: Chevrolet Corvair Spyder Turbocharged Story and photo by Bill Vance The compact Corvair, which Chevrolet introduced in 1960, had an aluminum, horizontally-opposed (flat), air-cooled six-cylinder engine located in the rear, and four wheel independent suspension. This put it away out of the mainstream of an American auto industry dominated by big cars with front-mounted cast iron V8s driving through a solid rear axle. The Corvair was inspired by the top-selling German Volkswagen, and along with cars like the Ford Falcon, Chrysler (later Plymouth) Valiant and American Motors Rambler, was meant as an import fighter. But if the Corvair wasn't differ…

Whenever I hear that old chestnut describing a GMC pickup, I take it as a reference to a trusted friend, and I was glad to have my Sierra in the last few days. Sunday, my seven-year old wash machine quit with a tub full of soapy water. After going online and then checking everything I could think of, I decided it was time to head to Lowe's and buy a new washer and dryer (coincidentally, my mom's dryer quit at the same time). So off I went. I felt very good, being able to carry my new stuff home without depending on others. The hard part was getting the washer into the laundry room by myself (I ended up wheeling it in on my creeper, and boy was I sore the next day), b…

Yesterday, me and the family went shopping in my dad's big, bright red F250. Not an easy thing to miss, by any means. That didn't stop some dumb broad in a Windstar. Slowing down for traffic stopped at intersection, she must have been blind. As we stop, we feel a jerk and hear a pop. We were rearended. My dad is cursing like a sailor. We pull off, the dumb broad follows suit. My dad gets out to inspect. Well, what do you know... she rammed the hitch. No damage to the truck, but she f@#ked up front bumper. Dumb bitch. Yes, yes... Not really a highlight of the curse, but it was mentionable. Otherwise, winter driving is interesting. The only vehicles you see wrecking a…

Ok, I was thinking a lot about this over this Labor Day weekend. While driving out of town, I stopped at a Ford dealership along I-5 to get a brochure. Interestingly enough, a salesman who had been a mechanic in dealership service departments since 1995 approached me. I explained I was NOT from the area and I was curious to see a new Taurus up close and get a brochure on both the Taurus and the Fusion. He was very courteous and understood I was on vacation, so he did not push at all. In fact, we talked for quite a while about car mechanics - the transition from cast iron to aluminum, the 3800, the Ford Duratech, electronic throttle control, variable valve timing an…

. . . At least through the summer. Today was my first official day at work for Environment North Carolina. So for the next few months, I get to go through local neighborhoods canvassing to raise money for a campaign preserve a million acres of North carolina's natural areas from our rapid development. And for that, I feel like a banana dance. (Dance is made with 100% organically-grown bananas, of course.)

I've had this idea for sometime and every year I try but come to the same struggle I'm having now. Back in 1970 after my dad left the service, he had bought a red 1965 Corvette (327cc, 4 speed) convertible (black top) and he loved it but then was forced to sell it as he was having some financial issues since he was still in college at the time but really wishes he could get that car back all the time. Now, I have nowhere near the money to go buy and restore a 65 Vette but I do want to have a large size poster printed and framed for him. I'm thinking something at least 30" wide. About a year ago I had found this image off ebay and had emailed the seller if they had any …
