A bit of a rant, but these things happened over the last few weeks and I can't get over how dumb all 5 are. #1. My Buddy Steve runs a body shop, did the body work on my 71 Chevelle and my 55 Chevy and also has fixed my other cars, including the Safari van when it got hit by a truck. Steve took a BMW Salvage title rebuild down to the Ohio State highway patrol to get it checked out so he could sell it. He noticed a very nice 65 Corvette Convertible (red, restored) being hauled away with the impounds to a company that crushes cars. He asked them what they were doing with the Vette...and was told that they were crushing it for reasons they couldn't discuss. Why in…

Article My favorite quote: BOB LUTZ, GM's vice chairman of global product development: "Now that we have the 35 miles-per-gallon fuel economy mandate by 2020, I am hoping that in 2008 'Professor Doktor' David Friedman (research director, clean vehicles program, Union of Concerned Scientists) and his 'highly-qualified' band of allegedly concerned, self-proclaimed scientists will turn their energy toward showing the world's automotive industry exactly how those numbers, using existing technology and 'costs of a few hundred dollars at the most' can be attained with a vehicle selection that even remotely resembles the cars and trucks Americans want to buy today."

What Car is a Definite Home(r) Run? Monday, 11th October, 2010 by "black-knight" I'm sure that if you're an average American you've probably watched Fox's long-running animated sitcom "The Simpsons" at one point in your lifetime. I'm also sure that if you're an average American who likes cars that's watched that aforementioned TV show, you know about The Homer, the car protagonist Homer Simpson designed himself for his half-brother's (Herb Powell) domestic automobile manufacturer, Powell Motors. Okay, well, if you didn't before now, now you do and you can see that hunk of fictional American metal in the header above. Now, there's an old saying that goes, "Life i…

I like big buttes. By the way, butte is pronounced like beauty, only without the y. It's essentially a lone mountain, and there are several near me. Today was my 2nd drive up the Big Southern Butte. Mom wanted to go to York PA today to look at the Kia Souls and Nissan Cubes. She wanted to go "the back way"... needless to say, we got all kinds of lost somewhere in Bumf@#k, Egypt, then ended up in the deepest ghetto parts of York (with her sitting straight-armed in my Cobalt, muttering "we've gotta get out of here, they're writing on their buildings!"), and finally emerged directly in front of the Kia dealership. So we looked, then looked at the Cubes before heading back to Lancaster and lucking out at a decent local restaurant for dinner. What'd you guys do for your mothers today?

A friend of mine owns a 2002 Honda Odyssey. At the time of purchase, he took an extended warrentee, from GE. Two weeks ago, his transmission failed; requiring the installation of a rebuilt unit. The thing is, when installing a rebuilt unit, Honda suggests replacing the transmission PCM (power control module), at a cost of almost 1k. GE picked up the cost of the transmission, but not the computer. But since my friend is required to use a new PCM, shouldn't the warrentee cover its' replacement? Anyone have any suggestions? Also, does anyone know of any popular Honda forums, where I might also pose this question? Thanks in advance!

This spring, America hit a historic point. With average gas prices per gallon edging toward $4, America's notoriously profligate ways started to change fast. Americans are driving less, using mass transit more, buying fewer gas guzzlers, indeed shopping less wantonly in general, and lowering their previously unshakable confidence as consumers. Suddenly, Americans are acting differently; if not exactly like Swedes, then not quite like themselves, either. It's a shift that could change the world. And there are more changes to come. So far the price shock has triggered the most obvious consumer shifts in the United States. Europeans, already greener, are also are buffered …

I saw a green and white Prius taxi today in traffic..I googled and found this article: From the Denver Business Journal: ---Metro Taxi doubled its fleet of hybrid vehicles on Denver streets Monday, bringing the total to 10. The addition of the five new Toyota Hybrid Prius is in keeping with a pledge Metro Taxi made in late May to replace all 500 vehicles in its fleet with hybrids. Metro Taxi said replacing one of its taxis with a Prius is equal to converting five non-commercial vehicles to hybrids. The company estimates converting its entire fleet will save 3 million gallons of gas a year.

OK, so I seem to remember a Pontiac ad from magazines or maybe a full line brochure. I would love to have it as my desktop, but I cant find it on the web. Does anyone have it scanned by chance? If noone does I may have to dig out some old brochures to see if I can find it. OK, the ad was (I am pretty sure) a GTO, Bonneville and Grand Prix all in one pic, and I think they were made to look like they were sitting at the end of skid marks that would look like they spun them into place for the picture. It would have to be 2004 or 2005, methinks. Bueller? Bueller?

My wife's company is headquartered in Denmark (it's a pharmacutical company). She was asked to attend a workshop there for several days next week (Sept 23-27). She asked what I'd like for her to bring me back, and I couldn't really think of anything until this morning. Depending on what brand of GM vehicles are sold there (i.e. Vauxhall, Opel), I'd like a brochure from them (I'm a cheap person to get gifts for at times). She'll have time to tour the city and will be taken around by someone she knows from Denmark that comes to the States often at her work, so they should know where to find these dealerships. Any help???

So with our new Commander in Chief taking office, it gave me a good idea for a Dream Garage Thread. Obama held office from the beginning of 2009 to just a few days ago. So let's use his time of rule as a timeline to make our choices from. Rules- 1) Production cars only. 2) Maximum of 5 choices. 3) Vehicles MUST have been sold in YOUR market. 4) These are your only vehicles. 5) Choices MUST be from 2009-2016 MY range. Nothing newer or older. Enjoy.

Hey gents and ladies (where's gmpg these days?) I'd like to think I'm fairly smart, but I'm always a "late adopter" (marketing term) when it comes to technology, for the pricing and for me to "get over" my lack of understanding the new technology. Some brief questions: 1) Are the HP Pavilion desktops with Intel Dual Core or Quad Core reliable machines? Any pluses or minuses? What kinds of limitations to their use could I encounter by limiting the size of the hard drive or RAM? (I will not be getting a laptop, though my friend says they're ideal for a coffeehouse person…

So... I went yesterday. I went with my parents, grandpa and a friend of mine. We all walked around together to all the exhibits - if somebody wanted to see it, we would spend a little time. The only companies that we didn't go to? Toyota and Kia. Kia just didnt have anything new we wanted to see, and there were a few comments about not having enough coffee for the Toyota exhibit. GM's exhibit was really impressive. They had a stage where they drove the vehicles up as they introduced them. Lexus had a really impressive 'owners lounge' at the back of their exhibit. Show your Lexus key, get in to the lounge and get free coffee, food etc. Ford actually had a decent e…

This was a facinating story about a three wheeled car, a transvestite and fraud in the 70's. The Dale three wheeled car was designed by Dale Clift and marketed by Liz Carmichael. It was covered widely in print and television media during the gas crisis of that period. But things weren't all that they appeared. The company was investigated and fraud, grand theft and securities violations was discovered. Only about 3 prototypes were built. One is in the Petersen Museum. And Liz went to prison. Later it was also discovered that Liz Carmichael was a 200 lb transvestite who was born Jerry Dean Michael. Not that there is anything wrong with that. 1975 Dale brochure:

I swear, we have the worst luck with bottom feeders. We've been through 3 so far this year. I'm not sure what the issue is. Tested the water, everything was good. It was treated with medication shortly after we got our last Pleco. Temperature is in the right range, salt levels are good. This one turned up dead yesterday. I'd never seen the other fish pick on/at it, and it showed no signs of being attacked when I found it...although by teh time I got it out of teh water they had picked at it... Meanwhile, the two Silver Tips "Sharks" are happy as can be. Weird.

For Release: DECEMBER 9, 2005 Detroit - General Motors has announced today, December 9, that it will acquire Northwest Airlines. GM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner confirmed the purchase plans. Wagoner states: "We are very excited with the prospect of this new alliance." When pressed, Wagoner indicated that it was actually a contractual relationship between Northwest and one of its suppliers that was of particular interest to the Corporation. Although he declined to name the supplier, another GM Executive did. Mark LaNeve, group vice president of GM North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing indicated that contract with Kimberly-C…

Hey everyone, I have been thinking about this a little lately, and I wanted to see what you all thought about it. Am I way off track?! It seems to me as though Toyota is paralleling GM of the 70's and 80's. And by that I mean, cutting corners - doing things cheaper, riding along on a reputation instead of producing the product to maintain the reputation? It seems like Toyota (and I've thought this since before this whole recall situation) is cutting corners a lot. I don't spend too much time in Toyota's, and I personally strongly dislike the company - mainly because their products all lack excitement or driving dynamics (I guess I can't say all, my experience is v…

Just found out from the news today (Yes, eventhough I'm anti-press I do glance every once in a while) that as of now there are only 2 other place in America where gas prices are higher than what I'm paying. Those places are 1) Hawaii and 2) Some high class place up north I think. So we have the third highest gas prices on average in the nation. The other day my community had the most expensive gas prices in NC. They're averaging from 3.19/gallon to 3.21/ gallon for regular here. I got a tank in Charlotte this weekend for 2.98/gallon though...SCORE!!! Just thought I would whine a bit.

I just ordered Sirius today. I was asking for satellite radio it for Christmas but Circuit City has a sale on a certain receiver ($100 off) and Sirius is giving another $50 off so that means a $150 receiver is free. I'm not going to hardwire it to my car because I don't feel like dealing with the problems of doing it myself or paying to have it done professionally, plus I'm asking for the home kit for Christmas now. I'll just do it through FM transmission. I chose Sirius over XM mainly because of the deal on the receiver but I've signed up for free trials for both (on their websites) and Sirius has played a lot more music I like. So…

I just had my first ortho consultation. I decided that, with the flex spending plan at work, I would pop for braces this year. My uppers are right on. My lowers are crowded. I got this consult because only some dentists can do the Invisalign. He said it would take 12 months + up to 2 or 3 more months. The cost is $ 5600 for conventional ones (which he recommends for me) and $ 6300 for the Invisalign which will take 18 months. YIKES. I definitely need the remaining 2 consults. Two girls who work in my office went to the same, but different, ortho for quite a bit less money. Any of you gotten braces PAST your teenage years? Costly? Was it painful?…

Here's the lowdown: This fall, chances that I'll finally find something to drive are looking good. I'm hoping to God I'll manage to be driving a classic first-generation Pontiac Firebird, but I'm not going to bet the bank on it. I've considered some other options that fit my criteria (it has to be rear-drive) so I can have a backup plan just in case things don't turn out the way I have planned them to. I've considered more modern cars, too, and Cadillac's Catera has made it's way onto my list. The car is okay as is. But a thought crossed my mind: if I do end up driving one of these, could I graft the nose of the GTO onto a Catera? And with a little bit of fabrication a…

The paint was oxidized, faded, and peeling... it was missing two hubcaps, and it was always in the shop for mechincal problems. It sounded like $h!, too... God, that thing can make a person love an unl…

Mr. SpeedingPenguin detailed my Datsun "Zwei" for me today, to return the favour I decided to list his winter Beater Jeep pickup on Craigslist for him. It's basically a parts truck at this point... we decided to throw up a quick listing but it quickly turned into more of a joke than anything. Enjoy. http://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/car/303533154.html

So I guess anything over about 150 watts needs to be hard wired to the battery? Surely the cigarette lighter socket would be running off the alternator no? Or is that socket just not designed to handle more than about 150 watts? Then again I'm not looking to run a convection oven in the front seat....want to run my laptop and maybe some camera battery chargers.

Just Browsing Flickr, I found this picture of Calgary in the early 1950s and it's in color, so I thought I'd share it... Incidentally, one of the billboards at the foot of the bridge, has an 88 and 98 on it... Could that be an OLDSMOBILE ad ?

Ever see a certain car and flash-back to vivid memories...maybe good or bad? 1978-80 Grand Prix: My "real" dad and his second wife had a 1978 GP....all I remember is sticky vinyl seats in the hot Florida sun. - My first car was a 1979 GP, which was a hand-me-down from Mom....bought new. Lots of childhood memories and later, beginner driver memories formed there. Had my first car wreck in it. Learned how to do burnouts and slide sideways in it. Insane, youthful, indestructible feelings. - My great Grandma had a base 1980 GP. Lots of memories of going places with her when I was a kid. Lots of trips through the Jack-in-the Box drive-thru. - So when …

Yes, tonight sometime soon Top Gear goes off of the airwaves. No, not for good (hopefully), but at some time tonight season 19 does officially end ... maybe. Of course, since Top Gear always leaves you with horrible between-season withdrawls (the long wait for the new season was like going through heroin, cocaine, oxycodone, and smoking joneses all at the same time), you eventually find yourself searching between seasons for something else to watch that will fill the void until the new one debuts. Besides watching the take-it-or-leave-it 'Mericun version that airs on the History Channel, YouTube has begun to offer quite a lot in the way of auto-related programming that is…

I think the event is called Hell on Wheels, but I know for sure it is at National Trail raceway. Forget which large car club, all pre 72 American stuff, is holding a big get together. They are going to have drag racing and they also want an autocross, so the local (OVR) chapter of the SCCA and the Buckeye Miata club are going to help to run an autocross. Let's see...cars with 300, 400, 500 horsepower...guys who have never done this...some cool old cars...beating on them like they are ment to be beaten on....hmmmm. Also Next weekend the local SCCA is holding a huge Rallycross event, like autocross only on dirt. I'm not racing in it, but will probably ride along wit…

So yes, I've been busy. Sorry I have been absent on here. I'm not "back" either, you probably will see very little of me in the next few weeks. Installing a water pump on my 1959 Buick for the 8th time the other day I cracked the timing chain cover so I can drive the car about 20 miles & or 30 minutes between 2 gallons fillups of H20. My STS is still not sold, it just might have to go to the junkyard tomorrow if the landlord is still having a cow. The Datsun sits in the mini-carport. Untouched, not roadworthy but still together. As far as my personal life, well I think I will keep my personal life "personal" for now, but a LOT has/is happening.…

Here's a sequence of photographs showing some damage done to a parked Mazda RX-8 near Ottawa. The result. The damaged Mazda and the offending vehicle's garage. Long shot showing the Mazda and the vehicle that did the damage to it. Yes, that's an M1A1 Abrams tank. A company in Ontario does work on the M1A1 Abrams tank, and their work requires them to have one on site. When taking it out of storage yesterday, the driver had a little problem.

I've wanted to go to one of these events for the longest time...and finally this year I caught it 5 months ahead of time and had it on my calendar ever since. This weekend at Citizens Bank Park in Philly, the GM Main Street in Motion test drive event. Hot, sunny and breezy day today, PERFECT timing. Got there around 10am, to the site of Chevy Volt after Volt driving down the street and on a loop--the Volt was the one vehicle they had a large number of, and had preset a test route out of the track and onto the local streets for every test. Registration quick & easy, I hit the GMC truck & comparo tent first, right past the entry. Yukon Denali Hybrid, Sierra 2500HD…

Guess what? I am NEW to these. Typically, I've had rental cars while on vacation or, if in foreign urban centers, I've just used their metro systems to get around. I need to get to the airport. Early. If not an early flighty, I just take a bus from a suburban mall to a train station for the subway into the airport and go on the cheap. Can't beat that. Plus, I love riding subway type trains. There is no early bus or train service for those first flights out. So I plan to take Uber or Lyft. Questions: 1. Have you had success with early pick ups in the burbs to go to the airport with Uber or Lyft? 2. Do you prefer Uber or Lyft? Pros and con…

I went to a couple of dealerships last night to check out new cars for the heck of it. There were NO 2010 LaCrosses at the B(O)(P) dealership...and it was a fairly large store. There were NO 2010 Tauruses at the Ford dealership...and it was a very large store. There were NO base Camaros (within the visible part of the lot) at the Chevy dealership...and it was a very large store. What's up with this? Has anyone seen any 2010 LaCrosses or Tauruses on the lots? When are they due in?

I put this trailer hitch and tire trailer setup together this fall to give myself a little piece of mind when I take my car on trips to the track. I will feel much more comfortable making the trips to Road America and Heartland Park (I currently live near Chicago) next year knowing I have a full set of wheels and tires with me. Tire trailer did great on the highway, couldn't even feel it back there. See you at the track.

This is a thread for gun enthusiasts, no matter how many or how little firearms you have, here's the place to talk about them. JUST TO BE CLEAR, this thread should contain NO political views or standpoints. It is only here to discuss the guns themselves. This thread over at MT was one of the very few that was able to remain civil throughout its rather lengthy existence. I have no doubt a more civilized group can do the same or better.

Well, here I am packing for tomorrow afternoon's flight up to PDX. I will stick around Friday night and all of Monday, the 25th, before flying out. Sat and Sun will probably be a jaunt to Seattle, overnighting up there. I can only stay near my Mom for very limited doses as she is both a pain-in-the-ass and stupid...sorry. (I was told, "I hope you bring up some nice clothes and go to Mass on Christmas day." ) I can't believe that someone who can't do ANYTHING would need to instruct me...I have no problem with the Mass part, as I will probably find a parish to duck into and go to church, but the apparel part is out of control. At any rate, how will you be spending th…

Since Camino LS6's thread referred to new cars and some of us have been mentioning used car preferences in that thread I thought this would be a fun thread for the used car shopper in us all. For me: Exterior must be in good shape. I little rust maybe and/or th expected imperfections are fine but the paint must overall be in good shape and still shine. It also can't have any large amounts of body damage bigger than a ding. Engine must be clean. No oil or dirt on the engine. Not only is it a sign of engien problems but also of poor maintenance. The interior must be in good shape, nothing broken and everything must work. It also must attractively designed. Materials are …

In the last month I have seen two '07 Aveo sedans on the side of a highway with smoke billowing out from under the hood. The first was here around Springgyfield, it was on the side of the road yet traffic was still backed up, and you could see flames poking out. The second was yesterday up near Jefferson City, where people apparently know how to drive, since it was on the shoulder and traffic was moving over, but not slowing to a creep. No flames, just thick smoke. It seems the new Aveo is indeed red hot.

Last night, one or more people broke into two cars in the small parking lot next to my apartment. This area has been notorious over the years for having cars broken into due to how secluded and dark it is at night (in a semi-wooded area). No windows from the apartment face this parking lot, so the thugs think it's a free-for-all and have hit some people twice even. I was third in line parked next to a newish Chevy TrailBlazer and a late 90s Pontiac Sunfire (the Pontiac was closest to the parking lot entrance). The guy that drives the TB is moving out next week to Michigan where his wife will be attending grad school. My car had a pretty new mini-fridge in the backs…
