Original article here: http://www.economist.com/blogs/freeexchang...rivers_seat.cfm I ABSOLUTELY hate the idea of comparing the administration's response to the collapse of the big carmakers to the administration's response to the collapse of the financial system. They're superficially alike, yet different enough in substance to make analogy misleading. And yet, I can't avoid it. Barack Obama's comments today, as he rolled out the administration's plan for handling the all-but-certain failure of General Motors and Chrysler just demand to be held in constrast to his administration's poor roll out of its banking plan. The first and most notable difference is the messeng…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 14, 2012 During an event in San Francisco, GM's product chief Mary Barra announced the company their green-car will focus on plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. "A major focus for GM's electrification strategy will center on the plug," said Barra. She went onto say that plug-ins offer "a unique opportunity to change the way people commute.” GM's original strategy for green cars included the development of different powertrains, including hybrids. That plan has proven to be too expensive and not efficient. "We need to make educated bets on which technologies hold the most potential for creating values for ou…

You know, Thomas Friedman is one of the more moderate writers at the NYT and what he writes usually is sensible and presents both sides of the story. But today he penned the most hysterical anti-GM editorial which has appeared in newspapers across the country. He says that GM is the most destructive company in America. He says that GM makes SUVs that consume lots of oil and send money to the Middle East. He said that GM's new plan to subsidize gasoline will send even more money to the Middle East and result in many Americans being killed. He has called for GM to be taken over by Toyota for the safety of the country. The whole thing was foaming-at-the-mouth hysteric…

DETROIT (Reuters) - Shares of General Motors Corp hit their lowest level since 1955 and dragged down the auto sector on Thursday after Goldman Sachs cut the struggling U.S. industry's largest manufacturer to a "sell" rating and warned it would have to raise capital. The panicky slide in GM shares capped a period of growing concern about liquidity risks to U.S. automakers and suppliers from a domestic auto market reeling from record gas prices and the impact of a housing slump and tighter credit. The Goldman Sachs warning, including the unusual "sell" call on the U.S. auto industry's largest player after a period of sharp stock price declines just ahead of the close of…

Well.....duh!!! DETROIT (Reuters) - In an industry where 'product is king,' General Motors Corp. is in dire need of attractive new vehicles to rule the road, analysts say, mostly dismissing a move by the ailing auto giant to cut jobs and close plants to save billions of dollars a year. The world's largest automaker on Monday said it will cut 30,000 North American manufacturing jobs and close 12 operations as part of a broader restructuring plan. "I don't think the cuts are enough, but it's not a matter of whether they are enough or not, it's a matter of whether or not the company will create the culture of innovation GM …

Trump posted multiple tweets regarding the closure of GM's Lordstown Ohio plant today. In those tweets he says he has spoken to GM CEO Mary Barra about his displeasure over the closing of the facility. He said he demanded swift action on either the selling of the plant or reopening it. He further stated the Ms. Barra blamed the UAW for the closure. In a further series of tweets, Trump mentioned that GM and the UAW will be starting talks in September of this year, but that he is impatient with that timeline. Claiming that we have one of the best economies in history, he wants to see the plant opened or sold to another car company. While Lordstown has…

General Motors announced this morning a new alliance with ride-sharing company Lyft to develop an on-demand network of autonomous vehicles. GM has also invested $500 Million into Lyft as part of a round of a $1 billion round of fund-raising - one of the largest investments GM has made into a company. Lyft is a ride-sharing company that connects passengers who need a ride with those who have a car via an app. The app also automates payments to drivers. The goal of two companies is to build out a network of hubs around the U.S. where people can summon an autonomous vehicle via Lyft's app. The partnership with GM could give Lyft over its competitor Uber, which is als…

[source: Wall Street Journal] New Era in Autos as GM Files for Bankruptcy By KEVIN HELLIKER, NEIL KING JR. and JOHN D. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 30, 2013 In India, General Motors hasn't issued a recall since 1995. That trend ended this past week as GM announced the recall of 114,000 Chevrolet Tavera utility vehicles built from 2005 to 2013 and are equipped with the 2.5L and 2.0L engines. The reason? According to India's Economic Times via Automotive News, GM employees deliberately fudged emission inspections to meet the standards. "Over a period of time some employees of the company engaged in the practice of identifying engines with lower emission which were fine-tuned and kept aside to be used for installation on vehicles during inspection," said GM in a …

Here is GM's response to Chrysler's recent news about their new warranty program. Still The Best: GM’s 5-Yr./100k-Mile Powertrain Warranty Chrysler recently unveiled a Lifetime Powertrain Warranty. But it’s a quality statement that still doesn’t quite measure up, from GM's perspective. GM believes that our 5-Year/100,000-Mile Powertrain Limited Warranty continues to be the better choice. Length of time is not the sole factor in comparing manufacturers’ warranties. GM coverage focuses on the complete ownership experience and includes other provisions that our competitors do not offer, including transferability to the next owner and more complete coverage of parts. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 1, 2013 2013 has been the year of the pickup truck with sales reaching levels that haven't been seen since the recession. If you're a truck manufacturer, the last thing you want to have happen is a hiccup when you're launching a new pickup. Unfortunately that is happening with General Motors. According to Bloomberg, General Motors is facing a shortage of the 5.3L V8 for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra due to a unnamed supplier not being able to keep up with demand. This is causing GM to restrict the number of V8 pickups that Chevrolet and GMC dealers can order. Now General Motors is saying this is a tempo…

There is some good news appearing from General Motors' ignition switch mess. The Detroit News reports that GM dealers have repaired 1.36 million ignition switches globally out of 2.36 million it believes are still in use, or about 57.8 percent of vehicles around the world. It should be noted that the 2.36 million amount is down from the 2.59 million GM recalled back in February and March. "The difference between the 2.59 million produced and recalled, and the populations being sought is made up for by scrapped vehicles or vehicles no longer traceable by registration," said GM spokesman Alan Adler in a email. In the U.S., GM dealers have repaired 1.14 million vehicles ou…

GM (Finally) Makes a Profit, But Some Worries Remain The Atlantic A year after the bailouts that I, among others, opposed, General Motors has announced its first real profit--$1 billion in positive cash flow, and $865 million in net income. At this pace, GM may emerge from bankruptcy and go public by the end of the year, which will allow the government to recoup some of its investment. This is great news for taxpayers, and for GM employees. The company didn't just achieve the profit by cutting costs, but also by improving the revenue side. However, there are still some dark spots on the record: 1. GM achieved its profits at a time when the number one Japanese carma…

Anybody read the interview that Motor Trend published on p.90 of their June 2006 issue? They spell it out in no uncertain terms. He is throwing in the towel on the US market, hoping to just tread water, and pinning all his future hopes on GM salvation in China! That's why we are getting 2nd-class, ho-hum models, 'cause he wants to push the brand in China and make lotsa moolah! Although he cut his pay in half, it still is $1.1 MILLION dollars! And what about the rest of the management tier? The burden of 2.5 retirees per each US employee, with full benefits won't go away with a switch to a different money market. If the thinking is that China is their star…

I sent this e-mail to Mark Phelan, writer for the Detroit Free Press, in response to his "Build the Camaro" article on the newspapers website. As i tell him near the end of the e-mail, i have put much of myself into the letter, and i humbly submit it for your perusal; Mr. Phelan, I am a thirty year vet of the General Motors Corporation. Started back in '76 with Fisher Body in Trenton, New Jersey. I was a nineteen year-old kid in wide-eyed awe at the manufacturing might of the automaker. Back then, GM controlled an unwieldy fifty percent of the US market. Specifically, what i was introduced to, and later became proficient in was roll forming. My department made…

I was looking through all of the 2007 model guides and it looks like a year of retrenchment...not much new, not much different in the way of colors and trim and virtual duplication of ordering groups/patterns. Say I wanted a telescopic wheel or a folding front bucket seat outside of an option group. It's almost as it they are saying "take it or leave it." Are any juicy new platforms or extensive face lifts due in 2008 or 2009? Good Gawd. Are you feeling the same way - kind of ambivalent about the upcoming model year?

General Motors is now facing two new lawsuits with a total of $10 billion in compensation on the line. The two suits allege that GM's ignition switch recall has cause the values of their vehicles to drop. The first and largest suit is seeking to represent owners who bought or leased a recalled car from July 2009 to July 2014 and either still owns it, traded it in after the recall was announced back in February, or got into an accident. Steve Berman, one of the attorneys involved, tells Bloomberg that more than 20 million customers could join in the suit. “New GM repeatedly proclaimed that it was a company committed to innovation, safety and maintaining a strong brand. GM to launch Red Tag year-end sale Saturday By JAMIE LAREAU | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 11/16/06, 3:57 pm et Link to Original Article @ Autoweek DETROIT -- General Motors will start its year-end clearance sale, called the Red Tag Event, on Saturday, Nov. 18. The sale will run through Jan. 2 and include all brands except Cadillac, Hummer and Saab. The Chevrolet Corvette and Pontiac Solstice also are not included, GM says. The sale is similar to the promotion GM ran last year at this time, spokesman John McDonald said today. "What a consumer will see is a Red Tag hanging from the mirrors," McDonald said. General Motors took a page out Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' playbook by continuing the build the outgoing-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra alongside the next-generation models in an effort to keep sales up. But sooner or later, the previous-generation models will end production. When is that? During GM's third-quarter earnings call, CFO Dhivya Suryadevarat said the automaker would begin winding down production the K2 crew cab models early next year, followed by double cab and regular cab models beginning in "the early second half of next year." GM's Oshawa, Ontario plant has been helping with the production of the outgoing models. According to Automo…

3 large pickups don't live up to brawny image in side tests; none rates better than marginal for occupant protection ARLINGTON, VA — The Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Dodge Ram 1500, and Nissan Titan are billed as workhorses, but the side crash protection these 2009 model large pickups provide is wimpy, at best. The trio earns either poor or marginal ratings in side tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Even with side airbags, occupant protection in these crew-cab pickups is no better than marginal. "The size, weight, and height of these large pickups should help them ace the side tests just like the other large pickups we've tested. Not these three," says …

GM's Collapsing Ladder By Eugene Robinson Friday, November 25, 2005 It's sad to watch General Motors fall apart like a rusty old Malibu, and not just because so many workers are losing their jobs. When I was growing up in the '60s, GM was more than just an icon of American capitalism, more than just the company that made and sold half the nation's automobiles. General Motors gave me my first schematic diagram of the American dream. These days we'd call the GM strategy an exercise in market segmentation, but back then I would have called it "moving on up." With its five distinct lines of passenger cars, GM created a climbable staircase of …

Before we begin, let us state clearly that this is speculation by Karl Denninger at The Market Ticker. Examining the various stakeholders' interests in General Motors, Denninger has come up with a scenario that supposes GM's bondholders might actually want the automaker to file for bankruptcy. The bondholders appear to be the biggest obstacle to restructuring. They're not allowing GM to reach its government-mandated target for debt reduction because they would lose much of their investment in the process. According to Denninger, however, the biggest and most savvy of those bondholders could get 100% of their investment back if GM files for bankruptcy. Those bondholders …

From www.thetruthaboutcars.com Robert Farago 7-10-06 After carefully considering the potential benefits of a GM - Nissan - Renault alliance, auto industry analysts have concluded that the deal makes about as much sense as Finnegan’s Wake. Well duh. Anyone even vaguely familiar with GM’s current crisis knows there’s only one thing the General needs right now: vehicles that people want to buy, at a price that makes the company a profit. This they don’t have. And guess what? Neither does Nissan. The Japanese automaker’s sales are also in freefall, pending new product coming down the pike. Even if Nissan and GM and Renault could work together (a completely prepos…

GM's CEO pulls off a trick The automaker's improved performance during the third quarter and the stock’s 79% gain this year are the blue smoke and mirrors that make CEO Rick Wagoner one of corporate America’s top illusionists. It's hard to believe, but Rick Wagoner may just pull a Harry Houdini and escape the General Motors (GM, news, msgs) mess with his CEO job. But is that any good for GM's shareholders? Less than a year after the automaker posted a loss of nearly $11 billion, prompting one of the largest restructurings in corporate history, Wagoner may be able to relax. Today, GM reported that its third-quarter loss narrowed to $115 million, from $1.7 billion a yea…

China has fined General Motors $29 million for monopolistic pricing according to Reuters. This ends speculation that we first brought to light last week. The fine is due to GM setting minimum prices on certain Buick, Cadillac, and Chevrolet models. "GM fully respects local laws and regulations wherever we operate. We will provide full support to our joint venture in China to ensure that all responsive and appropriate actions are taken with respect to this matter," GM said in a email statement. It was speculated that the fine is due to comments made by president-elect Donald Trump about the U.S. possibly recognizing Taiwan. But sources tell Reuters that the inves…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 31, 2013 More and more vehicles are coming equipped with elaborate infotainment systems that can do pretty much everything from giving directions to playing music off your phone. But these systems aren't always user friendly. A number of OEMs saw their ratings drop in Consumer Report's Auto Reliability survey because of their infotainment systems. General Motors wants to change that and is asking their 4,300 dealers about adding a customer Connection Center, a place where consumers can learn more and ask about in-vehicle technology and infotainment systems. GM spokesman Klaus-Peter Martin tells The Detroit News …

http://money.cnn.com/2006/07/10/news/compa...rtune/index.htm im still not buying into this whole thing. any change really wouldnt be evident until at least 3 years. i dont know if thats conservative or not. the best thing he got going for him is if the smaller euro cars made their way here. nonetheless it seems overly complex and just unnecessary. maybe if this were 10/15 years ago talks like this might have made some more sense. the clio seems like a neat little car though. probably do real well here.

General Motors hasn't ruled out stake in Malaysia's Proton auto maker Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News Proton GEN 2 General Motors Corp. is still talking about a stake in Malaysia's unprofitable carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd., Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner said. He declined to comment on GM buying DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler, Bloomberg News reported today. The Proton talks remain "extremely" preliminary, Wagoner said in an interview at the Geneva Motor Show. GM is in talks with Chrysler about a possible purchase, people familiar with the situation have said as recently as last week. GM plans to increase global sales with new models and partnerships…

For the first time in its history, General Motors Corp. is now selling more cars and trucks in other countries than it does in the United States, GM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner told the Free Press. This historic shift reflects both GM's dwindling share of the mature U.S. market and its promising position in China and other fast-growing Asian economies. But despite strong sales growth overseas, Wagoner stressed that GM's future still depends largely on whether he can reverse huge losses in the North American auto market, where GM has lost $4.8 billion so far this year, triggering a plunge in its stock price and downgrades of its deb…

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/21/business...9&partner=TOPIX By DANNY HAKIM Published: September 21, 2005 DETROIT, Sept. 20 - General Motors plans to market its next generation of large sport utility vehicles by promoting their gas mileage. Talking about fuel economy in commercials for vehicles like the Chevrolet Suburban might seem counterintuitive, particularly since large S.U.V.'s get mileage in the teens at a time when Americans have become more sensitive to what it costs to fill up. But G.M. executives said they would stress improvements that have been made in fuel economy for the large S.U.V.'s that will begin arriving in showrooms early next ye…

How can personal transportation become more sustainable in an age of increasing global competition for resources? What role will the automotive industry play in developing markets? To speed the process, GM will mark its 100th anniversary by launching a global dialogue through an initiative called GMnext. DETROIT -- General Motors Corp.'s board of directors is expected early next week to discuss a possible board seat for Jerry York, a key aide to billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, according to people familiar with the matter. Kerkorian, who owns a 9.5 percent stake in GM, said last week that he plans to buy more shares and may seek representation on the automaker's 11-member board. While Kerkorian has not publicly identified his choice for the board, people close to the situation say the 88-year-old casino mogul now is pressing GM to install York as a director. GM spokeswoman Toni Simonetti declined to comment. York, the former chief financial off…

Schneiderman, 08.11.06, 8:15 AM ET General Motors Ailing auto giant General Motors will begin to see the benefits of its new product line starting in the first quarter of 2007, according to a Thursday report by Credit Suisse. Despite the dark cloud that diesel has gotten due to the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal, General Motors sees a bright future for it. “The outlook for diesel in the U.S.A. is actually promising. We definitely see certain segments reaching 10 percent penetration and yes, an upside potential of 10 percent overall,” said Dan Nicholson, GM’s vice president of global propulsion systems to The Detroit News. Case in point, nine percent of Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks sold are equipped with a diesel. General Motors already has six vehicles available with a diesel (Silverado and Sierra HD: Colorado, Canyon, Express, and Savana). But they are planning …

China losing cheap labor allure More U.S. companies find savings are drained by errors, shipping costs and engineering changes. By Ron French / The Detroit News STERLING HEIGHTS -- Hal Zaima was in love with China. The owner of KenSa, an auto parts supplier based in Sterling Heights, gazed at the other side of the globe and saw things of beauty: factories ready to make his automotive wire harnesses, a favorable exchange rate and a limitless supply of workers willing to work for pennies, with more getting off trains each day from the vast countryside. In fall 2004, KenSa sold its last American factory and was negotiating to form a joint venture in Wuhu, Ch…

Saturn Sky rebadged as a Daewoo? Yes the G2X roadster was intro'd at the Busan Motor Show. Like the Sky and the Solstice, Daewoo will be using the vehicle as a halo and a way to lure younger buyers as it tries narrows the market share between it and Kia. We now have a Opel's version of the Sky sold in Europe as the GT and word has it a Holden model may be sold sometime in Australia in the future? Any way the G2X will only be offered and sold as a Daewoo in Asia. This will help add capacity and lower the cost per unit at the Wilmington plant and may make a second Gen more viable if it is sold world wide in greater numbers. Also before any one crys badge engineering …

The last thing you want before testifying before the U.S. House is announcement of more vehicles being recalled. In the case of the General Motors, this is happening. The automaker announced this afternoon the recall of 1.3 million vehicles because of faulty electric power steering units. The units can fail with little or no warning; the steering system still works, but it takes more effort from a driver. The vehicles involved in this recall include, Chevrolet Cobalt: Some model year 2010 vehicles Chevrolet HHR (Non-Turbo): Some model year 2009 and 2010 vehicles Chevrolet Malibu: All model year 2004 and 2005, and some model year 2006 and model year 2008 and 2009 veh…

William Maley Editor/Reporter- CheersandGears.com March 7, 2012 Last week, General Motors and PSA announced a new alliance that would have the two sharing components and give stronger purchasing power for both. The deal is "an additional tool to the toolkit in Europe" said GM Vice Chairman Stephen Girsky to reporters. When asked what would come next in GM's plan to save Opel, Girsky declined. "We can't tell you what our play is in Europe. We will tell you when it plays out over the next period of months and years ... I don't see the play in Europe showing up in one big bang." This has everyone worried about what the next move will be for Opel. Currently, European pro…

General Motors will soon be exiting two more global marketplaces. This morning, the company announced that it would be cease selling vehicles in India and end its operations in South Africa by the end of this year. “As the industry continues to change, we are transforming our business, establishing GM as a more focused and disciplined company. We are committed to deploying capital to higher return initiatives that will enable us to lead in our core business and in the future of personal mobility," GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement. As we reported back in March, GM said it was "considering reducing investments in North American cars and "select" international mark…

The first bellwether trial against General Motors over the faulty ignition switch has come to abrupt end. The plaintiff, Robert Scheuer has voluntarily dismissed his lawsuit against the automaker according to a filing in Manhattan federal court today. Scheuer accused GM of concealing a defect in the ignition switch that caused the airbags in his 2003 Saturn Ion to not deploy when he crashed into two trees in Oklahoma in May 2014. The accident caused injuries to Scheuer's back and neck. As we reported in December, GM tried to dismiss the case. However, U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman said the plaintiff had provided sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial. …

Lordstown Motors, the outfit affiliated with the hybrid truck manufacturer Workhorse is still aiming to buy the Lordstown assembly facility from General Motors. They want to design and supply EV components not just to GM, but to many manufacturers. Wiring harnesses, electric motors, and other components would all be manufactured at the plant al…

What GM's Strike Means to Car Shoppers Link to Original Article @ KickingTires At 11 this morning, the United Auto Workers union went on strike at American GM plants. This basically shuts down production of many new GM cars, trucks and SUVs for the foreseeable future. But does that mean you won’t be able to find that new GM car, truck or SUV when you go car shopping in the immediate future? According to the latest inventory numbers, GM on average has enough vehicles for 67 days at the current rate of sales. Some hot vehicles like the Buick Enclave — built in Lansing, Mich. — only had a 26-day supply, which is roughly 3,600 vehicles, as of Sept. 1. Trucks and SUVs lik…

I've heard this for awhile now, or rumblings at least but this is what GM and the UAW will be doing to replace the massive number of people that are leaving GM due to the early retirement buyouts. Evok and I have speculated in the past that some type of agreement would be conjured up between the Union and General Motors to replace those workers. This is the deal. GM has already began hiring temporary workers at three locations in Metro-Detroit. These temporary workers are being told they will be kept with the company for at least one year. However they will not have health benefits, and will not be considered part of the Union. Once the year passes, if General Moto…

Pontiaction: 3,600 Workers to be Relocated General Motors Corp. said Wednesday it will move 3,660 workers out of Pontiac to other metro Detroit offices by the first quarter of 2008 in an effort to become more efficient. Most of the workers will relocate to GM's technical center in Warren, and others will go to the corporate headquarters in downtown Detroit. No jobs are to be lost in the moves, which will allow GM to get rid of excess office space created through years of restructuring and retirement, GM spokesman Dan Flores said. Detroit Free Press

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB117629894771066330.html General Motors Corp. on Thursday posted a 90% plunge in first-quarter profit, though its loss narrowed at its core North American region, as poor earnings at GMAC Financial services weighed on the auto maker. Earnings in the latest quarter included unfavorable special items of $32 million, or six cents a share. It's no "Corvette SS," but whatevs. Anyway, we'll just let you look at the new n' pretty five-spoke wheels and the big side-bolstered red leather seats, an…
