Lutz Likes the Tundra The new Toyota Tundra, the Japanese automaker's first entry into the full-size pickup market dominated by U.S. automakers, got a positive review from an interesting source Tuesday: General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, who heads the automakers' product development efforts. Lutz, meeting with reporters at the North American International Auto Show, said he was impressed with the new Tundra, which is on display at the show and is now hitting dealer showrooms, and that he has no doubt that Toyota (Charts) will meet its sales target of 200,000 of the vehicles a year. "I took a good look at it today," Lutz said. "I think it's a very, very, very well e…

It was a beautiful sunny day at GM's proving ground in Milford, Michigan in mid-May when GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz invited me to watch him test the E-Flex system behind the new Chevy Volt. Given the enthusiasm surrounding the Volt, I jumped at the opportunity. Would E-Flex deliver on the promise that's been built up surrounding GM's electric car? The answer: Yes. We taped Bob driving the Volt E-Flex system for our CNBC documentary "Saving GM" which airs tomorrow night. The Volt's "guts" were in a Chevy Malibu "mule" car for the Lutz run. We didn't care. We wanted to see for ourselves how the Volt's battery-powered engine ran. Lutz was only supposed to do a lap at the M…

Lutz Not Happy with Changing Fuel Economy Rules A proposal to increase the U.S. fuel economy standards would force Detroit-based automakers market to "hand over" the market for trucks and sport utility vehicles to Japanese manufacturers, a senior General Motors Corp.(NYSE:GM - news) executive said. Bob Lutz, GM's vice-chairman and the head of the company's global product development team, said the proposed changes to the government's Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards would represent an unfair burden on the traditional Big Three automakers. "For one thing, it puts us, the domestic manufacturers, at odds with the desires of most of our customers, namely la…

Lutz on Lutz "Never in doubt" By JAMIE LAREAU | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Updated: 03/21/07, 2:32 pm et AT A GLANCE: Name: Bob Lutz Title: GM's vice chairman of global product development Age: 75 Personal: Married with four grown daughters Lives: Ann Arbor, Mich. Big break: Getting hired by BMW in 1972 as global sales and marketing head In 2001, Rick Wagoner went looking for a Bob Lutz-type to turbocharge General Motors' product development. Lutz, who was 69 at the time, had retired from Chrysler Corp. and was running Exide, the battery company. He had been everywhere and done everything, starting at GM in the 1960s and making a name for …

December 07, 2006 Whither the Minivan? By Bob Lutz GM Vice Chairman Lots of minivan talk going on… let me just make one thing clear: Nobody said GM is getting out of the minivan business forever. We simply pulled a minivan option out of the running for one of our archtectures. We reserve the right to initiate whatever future product programs we feel the market desires, up to and including new generations of minivans if we deem them necessary and desirable. That’s really the key to everything, of course: the market. And we think the case for another new entry at this point in a market is trending away from minivans just doesn't make a lot of sense. Look, the mini…

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said Tuesday the automaker will save billions in development costs with a new global engineering plan, but he wouldn't discuss some critical issues facing GM, including Delphi Corp.'s bankruptcy. Lutz also didn't address investor Kirk Kerkorian's efforts to increase his stake in GM. GM's shares rose 94 cents, or nearly 4 percent, to close at $26.42 on the New York Stock Exchange after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said it won't challenge Kerkorian's plan to increase his stake in GM to nearly 10 percent. Kerkorian has said he may seek a seat on GM's board. Lutz said that…

Billionaire Kirk Kerkorian is not the "rapacious raider" he is often portrayed to be, and the Las Vegas investor has taken a 9.5% stake in General Motors Corp. because he believes the company is ready for a turnaround, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said Thursday. Kerkorian's investment company, Tracinda Corp., said last week it might seek one or more seats on GM's board of directors, but Lutz disputed any assertion that Kerkorian was making demands. "We are seeing so far, it would be fair to say, none of the behavior that the press ascribed to Kirk Kerkorian," Lutz told reporters after a news conference at GM's proving ground in Milfo…

From TCC GM's vice chairman set out to set the record straight on a variety of issues following the Opel reveal on Tuesday. For one thing, he told reporters, the automaker's new rear-drive Zeta platform "is not dead or cancelled." Well, not exactly. The original version was, indeed, scrapped a few months back because "we did a lot of not-smart things…that didn't make business sense. We accepted the delay." As originally planned, GM's Australian subsidiary, Holden, will play the lead in developing the revised Zeta platform. But it is less and less likely that it will be able to export cars based on Zeta, at least to the United States.…

Lutz Talks Back Part I "Hey Bob...what's up with all the concept cars that never go into production" In the first of what promises to be several installments where Vice Chairman Bob Lutz talks face-to-face with the camera to respond to some boiling questions about the present and future of GM, its divisions, and individual products, Mr. Lutz answers the perennial question of what the heck is the deal with stunning concepts not being produced? In short summation... Velite - 'Prioritized out' as a result of increased spending towards fuel-efficiency and alternative fuel/propulsion Bel Air - Not a 'compellingly-beautiful car' to fund. Sixteen - No. Period. From a 'pu…

Lutz Talks Back Part II "Hey Bob...what about Buick?" Some clarification - as evidenced by this clip, this is actually the first of a four-part series featuring one-on-one interviews with Mr. Lutz that will be released over the rest of the month. FastLane editors had some technical issues, so they threw the second one up first. However, the order doesn't really matter. In this segment, Mr. Lutz assures us that both he and Buick are indeed alive. Future Buicks both in the American and Chinese markets will follow a "softer, quieter, more traditional American" design. This contrasts with Cadillac, which was described again as being edgier and more geared towards the ha…

Lutz Talks Back Part III "Hey Bob...what about Diesel?" Once again, another video interview with the Vice Chairman has been released on GM FastLance Blogs. In this segement, Mr. Lutz covers a topic many of us have been pondering ourselves - Diesel powertrains. Most notably, why the heck don't we have them here now? After reiterating much of what we knew about the stringencies of US Bin V, Tier II emissions (six times higher than Euro V standards) as well as the even higher local requirements in California and a handful of northeastern states, Mr. Lutz goes on to tell us, yes, those regs can be satisfied with urea and similar catalysizing systems. However, there is a…

Lutz Talks Back Part IV "Hey Bob...what's the big deal about the Triplets" In the fourth in what is likely the final installment of GM FastLane Blogs' exclusive one-on-one sitdowns with Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, the public face of General Motors tackles the cognative dissonance many of us have experienced about why Chevrolet unveiled three very progressive minicompacts at the recent New York Intl Auto Show - and even had us vote for out favorite - while dismissing them as products that won't be built either in America or for America a short time later. Mr. Lutz immediately clarifies that, while the Triplets themselves were not designed with American safety standards i…

Things are moving along quite nicely with the development of the Chevy Volt. According to Bob Lutz, test mules of the extended-range electric vehicle are now being built atop the soon-to-be-released Chevy Cruze. This is a logical progression since the production Volt will share its Delta underpinnings with the new compact from General Motors when it finally goes on sale in 2010. Prior to these latest mules, the test cars used last-gen Malibu shells that Lutz and the team affectionately referred to as "MaliVolts." Predictably, Mr. Lutz praises the new Delta platform, and we have every reason to believe that it will be leaps and bounds better than its Cobalt forebear, just …

Saint Jean Cap Ferrat , France -- It was a good two days for Robert Lutz, General Motors Corp. vice president for product development. The automotive media applauded the Geneva International Motor Show introduction of one of GM's divisional concept cars, the sleek, all-methanol-powered Saab Aero X. And at this Mediterranean resort, sumptuously sandwiched between Nice and Monaco, Lutz presided over the launching of the Cadillac BLS, a small, European-market, entry-level luxury car designed to take on the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedans. The GM that Lutz and company presented here did not look at all like the troubled GM of North America, whic…

Lutz: GM Still Open to Alliances No. 1 U.S. carmaker General Motors is open to an alliance with its No. 2 rival Ford, Vice-Chairman Bob Lutz said in a newspaper interview on Sunday. Asked whether GM would choose to go it alone or merge with Ford, Lutz said, "We are open to alliances. But we can also be successful alone." Lutz spoke in an interview in the Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung. Both Ford and GM are restructuring North American operations to adjust to a loss of market share in their home markets. GM is attempting to recover from a $10.6 billion loss in 2005. Lutz said GM remained open to a smaller deal with Renault-Nissan after GM declined to pursue a large…

Rick Kranz Automotive News December 7, 2007 - 10:33 am ET SAN DIEGO — A massive change to General Motors’ future product plans is expected if the 35 mpg CAFÉ fleet average favored by Congress is enacted into law. “The minute we have confirmation of the 35 mpg rule, that is the point where we go through all of our forward product plans and probably introduce, frankly, massive restructuring of the product plan,” said GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz. “A 35 mpg fleet mix means there is a bunch of stuff out there that is going to have to be 40 and 50 mpg.” The House bill passed last month calls for a 35 mpg nationwide fleet average by 2020, roughly a 40 percent increas…

We just got an email yesterday at our dealership that 2007 Torrent's and Equinox's produced between certain dates are to be sent back to General Motors for further inspection. They would not specify what the problem is, just that it is NOT a safety issue. The vehicles are to be picked up next week, sent to the nearest GM tech centre, and returned. Once I know more info, I will post it. Never have I heard of vehicles being sent back for inspection.

If you are interested in seeing one of the greatest propaganda efforts of all time, purchase tomorrow's Wall Street Journal. Mr. Steve Harris (The Rushing Rabbit), recently recalled director of PR at GM, has taken it into overdrive. First, he arranged for "Red Ink Rick" to be interviewed by anyone willing to "Paint the Roses Red". Now, rushing additional "Mad Chatter", the WSJ is the medium of choice. There you will find an advertised letter of support from the National Dealer Council glowing with accolades in support of Mr Wagoner, whom the New York Post called "the worst CEO since Chainsaw Al Dunlap". MARK PHELAN: Don't bury GM yet: It has the vehicles for recovery November 22, 2005 FREE PRESS COLUMNIST General Motors Corp. builds more good cars and trucks today than it has in decades, but it's still saddled with too many losers. Its plant closures should address that and allow GM to stop diverting resources it can't afford to vehicles it doesn't need. It may make sense for Pontiac and Buick to attempt to sell minivans in some alternate universe, but on Earth the boring vehicles only distract GM from coming up with vehicles the public actually wants. Every big automaker has its share of underperforming models -- even Japan's successful automa…

Rob Hinchliffe, an analyst for the research firm, said negative margin trends should continue throughout the third quarter for the company, before improving slightly in the fourth. The report was released following GM's analyst day on Wednesday during which the company introduced new products such as T900 pickup and the Lambda crossover SUV. Market valuations for GM, Ford skid as fears accelerate Fri, July 11, 2008 Shares of General Motors Corp. slid to another record low yesterday, as speculation swirled about the financial viability of U.S.-based automakers and a possible bankruptcy filing at GM. GM shares fell 64 cents, or 6.2 per cent, to close at $9.69, after tumbling to $9.32 earlier, passing Monday's five-decade low by 60 cents. Yesterday's low marked the Detroit-based automaker's lowest share price since July 2, 1954, when its stock dropped to $9.15, according to the Center for Research in Security Prices in Chicago. The price is adjusted for splits and other changes. Carl-Peter Forster,…

These guys have my ultimate respect, because they somehow manage to corral all the sales, pricing and incentives figures scattered throughout the automotive industry and transform them into something a journalist major can understand. Some of the more compelling figures from 2006: 1. General Motors' U.S. market share dropped to 24.6 percent, but the bulk of it came from cutting back on fleet sales. Not surprisingly, GM's incentive spending also dropped by 17.5 percent, to its lowest level since 2002 (and …

I knew I shoudn't have read the Wheels section of the Star before I'd had my first drink of the day, but.............. Just because the Impala is selling well and has won praise from some members of the media, the Toronto Star had to publish something to drag it down. July 2, 2008 - 11:00 am ET DETROIT (Reuters) -- General Motors will need to raise about $15 billion in cash to shore up liquidity and bankruptcy is "not impossible" if the U.S. auto market continues to slump, Merrill Lynch said on Wednesday. Merrill Lynch analyst John Murphy said in a research note he cut GM to "underperform" from "buy" and lowered his price target for the largest U.S. automaker to $7. GM shares fell Wednesday to as low as 10.80 on the report. As of 10:50 a.m. EDT, shares of GM were trading at 11.04, down 71 cents, or 6.0 percent. I know a mid engined Corvette has pooped out in the past via drawing concepts, show cars etc, but it seems according to DeLorenzo this time it is almost a done deal. He seems to have spoken to some top GM officials on the subject and they will make the desicion in September. I was planning on buying a Vette next summer but if the mid engined Vette really is a reality this time, I will have to keep my 172,000 mile 1993 Trans Am until 2010 to get my Vette. I keep my cars a long time so if I by a Vette in 2008 I would have to keep it at least 14 year…

This has been discussed in various places, but I'm wondering if anyone has any solid info about the 1009-10 timeframe? Seems like the W and G bodies could be easily replaced by "Zeta" as such: Impala (LWB) Monte Carlo (LWB 2 door) Camaro (SWB) G8 (LWB) GTO (SWB) Lucerne (LWB) Velite/Riviera (LWB 2 door) DTS gets moved over to Sigma while LaCrosse gets moved to Epsilon II. Input?

GM’s Next RWD Platform: Alpha Link to Original Article @ Winding Road March 22nd, 2007 12:49 PM GM is set to debut a new small-to-medium-size vehicle platform, called Alpha, according to WINDING ROAD’s sources. The new vehicle platform will incorporate pieces of Kappa (Pontiac Solstice) and Zeta (Pontiac G8), creating a rear-wheel drive architecture that will play a large part in the future of Pontiac and Cadillac. Sources say that Pontiac’s next G6 is set to go rear-wheel drive and will be the first to use the platform. GM’s Resident Car Czar, Bob Lutz, has said in public and private that he’d like to position the Pontiac brand as the company’s American answer to BMW…

GM: June sales dive spells brutal summer Bill Vlasic / The Detroit News DETROIT -- Sales at General Motors Corp. dropped sharply in June as the No. 1 U.S. automaker grappled with the long-term impact of its shrinking market share. GM's top sales executive said Tuesday that he was hopeful that the company's U.S. market share had hit bottom at 22 percent in June, but acknowledged that gains will be hard to come by until next year. "Is that the bottom? I'm not a clairvoyant, but I certainly hope so," said Mark LaNeve, GM's head of North American sales and marketing. On the day after announcing the unprecedented buyouts and retirements of 35,000 of its hourly worker…

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The General Motors Corp. Spring Hill manufacturing plant will survive if the company makes good on its promise to employees to bring in a new product line -- one that likely won't be a Saturn, analysts said. GM announced earlier this week that it will cut 30,000 jobs and close nine assembly, stamping and powertrain plants and three parts facilities. The line in Spring Hill producing the Saturn Ion compact car will shut down in 2006, a move that could eliminate 1,500 jobs. But GM officials have promised union leaders and plant workers that Spring Hill will be part of the company's future plans as it reworks and retools in an effort to cut …

More Zeta info from Go Auto: Come in Crewman BIGGER AND BETTER IN ’08 By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS in DETROIT GENERAL Motors product czar Bob Lutz has revealed that GM is set to display a VE-based SUV in the form of a four-door utility. Speaking to Australian media at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week, Mr Lutz hinted that it might herald the unexpected return of the Crewman dual-cab ute in Australia, not to mention a new export opportunity to the United States for Holden. “We will have a ute concept at the NY show, but that is going to be badged GMC,” he said. “That is a global design study – and a very interesting study in that it is…

Inside Line Motown Surprise: GM Relishes in Strong SUV Sales Date posted: 03-17-2006 DETROIT — General Motors is accelerating the launch of the redesigned 2007 Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon, following the public's enthusiastic reception of the new 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe. GM also wants to move up the production startup of the long-wheelbase Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade ESV, according to Reuters, and has asked suppliers to ship components ahead of schedule. GM has said the introduction of its redesigned full-size SUVs is the company's most significant product launch in 2006. Dealer deliveries of the '07 Tahoe began in January, and sales in the…

GM's CEO pulls off a trick The automaker's improved performance during the third quarter and the stock’s 79% gain this year are the blue smoke and mirrors that make CEO Rick Wagoner one of corporate America’s top illusionists. It's hard to believe, but Rick Wagoner may just pull a Harry Houdini and escape the General Motors (GM, news, msgs) mess with his CEO job. But is that any good for GM's shareholders? Less than a year after the automaker posted a loss of nearly $11 billion, prompting one of the largest restructurings in corporate history, Wagoner may be able to relax. Today, GM reported that its third-quarter loss narrowed to $115 million, from $1.7 billion a yea…

I obviously like news like this. Some analysts feel it will bode well for GM. They also say that it will be the dealers that will "take it on the chin." I immediately went to a couple of GM web sites to see how certain cars were priced and then to GM card to see if the allowances changed (downward). I did see, however, that some incentives have been lowered. Well, but that was expected. Do you think that the mark-ups will proportionately be the same? Do you think this will mess with the dealers? DO YOU THINK GM WILL SELL MORE CARS OR THAT THE OTHERS WILL FOLLOW SUIT?

Take this for what it's worth since it's from MT, but I figure that if they have news about it, it's been on for at least 2-3 months by now: Now, couple this with Lutz's comments, and it would seem that these vehicles (along with the GTO) that were "under serious study" have gotten approval.

I sent this e-mail to Mark Phelan, writer for the Detroit Free Press, in response to his "Build the Camaro" article on the newspapers website. As i tell him near the end of the e-mail, i have put much of myself into the letter, and i humbly submit it for your perusal; Mr. Phelan, I am a thirty year vet of the General Motors Corporation. Started back in '76 with Fisher Body in Trenton, New Jersey. I was a nineteen year-old kid in wide-eyed awe at the manufacturing might of the automaker. Back then, GM controlled an unwieldy fifty percent of the US market. Specifically, what i was introduced to, and later became proficient in was roll forming. My department made…

I've been carefully considering Bob Lutz's recent comments on Zeta and the GTO. What follows is part fact and part opinion. But it's my take. I've doublechecked several sources over the past couple of days, and as of yet, there is simply NO indication that Pontiac's G8 and GTO programs have been restarted, since their cancellations over a year ago. So what are these GTO comments really about? My opinion, the "Camaro Effect". Lutz saw how absolutely fervent, Camaro enthusiasts were about their car. That's me and you bub. He was able to effectively direct our intensity - in order to bludgeon bloody - the GM decision making process, until they finally acquiesced to a new C…

" Looking at buying a Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra? You may be in for a turbulent ride. GM engineers can’t seem to pinpoint the cause of a mysterious recurring issue in vehicles riding on GM’s K2XX platform, which includes its full-size trucks and SUVs, a problem that was referred to by one dealer as “The Chevy Shake.” Because GM can’t isolate the cause of the problem, a permanent fix has also been elusive. In December, AutoGuide.com ran a report detailing buffeting and vibration issues found in some GM full-size SUVs after being contacted by an owner who was experiencing these problems. While investigating the SUV issue, another flaw with different GM vehicles sur…

U.S. Auto Firms Need One Goal: Build the Best! By JAMES B. STEWART September 26, 2007 In another life, I'd love to run a U.S. auto maker. With General Motors on strike, billions in losses, and U.S. auto makers' market share in a seemingly irreversible decline, I can understand why you'd think this is crazy. Maybe I'm an incurable optimist when it comes to American cars, rooted in a love affair that began when my father brought home a 1957 DeSoto with power windows. But Detroit's glorious past isn't the main reason. I'm convinced that all the industry needs is some bold ideas and leadership. I'd like to think that Alan Mulally at Ford is the man for the job s…

So, a company called me up last week to ask if I would like to give them my impressions of car commercials - 1 hr, $65. I said sure, why not. So I went today, and they showed me four basic ideas for commercials. They were black and white drawings, some crudely animated, with voiceovers to give me the feel of what the finished commercials would look like. They were all part of a new campaign: "Let's Go: Chevrolet". Included in all of them was the new URL letsgochevrolet.ca, which for now, redirects to gmcanada.com. I'm assuming that they would develop it if they use these ads. Ad #1: Shots of people in an office. A man pops his head into a woman's cubicle, and says, 'l…

DETROIT — Backed by a hefty $300-million launch marketing campaign, the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu reportedly is quickly streaming out the doors of the dealerships nationwide that have been fortunate enough to get a few of the hot-selling models. Evaluations of Malibu's initial sales performance necessarily are just anecdotal at this early point, because it has been officially available only for less than a month and is still just beginning to trickle into most showrooms. But GM spokesman John McDonald confirms that Malibu "has had very fast turn rates" that have been contributed to "by limited supply at the start of the system fill." The nation's top seller of the old Malib…

General Motors Corp.'s new chief executive said Tuesday that he will not reduce his salary to $1 a year like his ousted predecessor, Rick Wagoner. Fritz Henderson, GM's former chief operating officer, said at a news conference that his pay will remain unchanged now that he is head of the troubled automaker. His base salary as COO was cut 30 percent to about $1.3 million this year when GM accepted government loans. Wagoner had agreed to accept a salary of $1 as part of the Detroit automaker's request for assistance. The company has been staying afloat because of the $13.4 billion GM has received since Dec. 31, and Wagoner stepped down as CEO on Monday as a condition fo…

On my way out of Lexington this morning, I spotted a billboard that said: "We'll see your 10... and raise you 44. 54 plants in the U.S." And it had all the brands underneath and the big blue GM badge on the right-hand side. Thats probably one of the best ads I've seen from GM in a while. I wasn't even aware that they were doing this. I think its a great jab back at Toyota.

New GM Crossovers On An Odyssey of Their Own By Scott Anderson Dec 28, 2006 1:08 PM Link to Original Article @ WardsAuto PALO ALTO, CA – It’s just not cool to make minivans anymore. It’s debatable if minivans ever were cool – just ask any 30-something who grew up sandwiched between a cooler of Capri Sun and mesh bag of soccer balls. But minivans are even less cool if you’re an auto maker on the wrong end of the segment, as General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. demonstrated this year. Both domestic auto makers have shut down their minivan programs, leaving the sliding-doors wide open for the leaders: The Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Group’s Dodge Caravan. By no…

Sorry, I this isn't really "GM news" but didn't know where else to put it. My Bro-in-law works as a web designer and is working on the new GM High Perf. Div. website. GM HPD is holding a meeting on Monday in regards to the new site. What they are asking for is info from GM gearheads like us to give some input on what they'd like to see on the new site. I need to turn these suggestions in to him by tommorow morning (Friday 11/10/06). My main thoughts are that I would like to see a section of the site dedicated to photo's and writeup's on each of their factory tuner cars that they've produced through the last few years... for example, that Orange GTO, the green RWD Mon…

GM's new key fob can check fuel level, tire pressures Posted 11/15/2006 1:00 AM ET The new fob will be a $150 option next year with Cadillac Escalades and other GM vehicles. By Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY For sleepless car owners who decide they need to check their tire pressure in the middle of the night, General Motors has a solution. GM (GM) plans to introduce a remote-control key fob next April that will allow drivers to not only determine the pressure in each tire, but also check the odometer reading, see if there's enough fuel in the tank to make it to work in the morning, change the radio station settings and see if they remembered to lock the car doors, to n…

[source: Wall Street Journal] New GM to Be 'Fully Launched' This Month, Rattner Says By JOHN D. STOLL and NEIL KING JR. General Motors Corp. is set to emerge from bankruptcy into an economic downturn that presents a major challenge for the country's largest auto maker -- and for the White House that saved it. Sunday's late-night ruling from the bankruptcy court cleared away objections to the GM's reorganization. This week, GM Chief Executive Frederick "Fritz" Henderson plans to introduce a revamped GM as a greener, more customer-focused company with a leaner management, people briefed on the plan say. By one measure, the company's spe…
