The Mazda MX5 Miata has been the world’s top-selling entry-level two-seat roadster for 16 years now since it’s debut in 1989. The MX5 was the brainchild of Bob Hall, who is now working at Proton in product development. But the past two months have been different with the launch of GM’s new Pontiac Solstice roadster which had sales figures double of the newly redesigned 2006 Mazda MX5 Miata. Pontiac Solstice sales for December were 2746 units where the Miata’s was 1007. January’s sales figures were 1990 units compaed to the Miata’s 1067. Is this just a short burst of sales or will the Miata’s throne finally be toppled? Your thoughts? http://paultan.org/archives/2006/02/…

GM Rushes to Meet Huge Demand for Solstice Date Posted 11-03-2005 PONTIAC, Michigan — General Motors said it will hike production of the 2006 Pontiac Solstice by adding a third shift at its plant in Wilmington, Delaware. At least two sister cars are going into production next year at the Wilmington plant, and a fourth could be added in 2007, company sources told Inside Line. Even though deliveries to customers started just three months ago, Pontiac dealers can't keep up with demand for the Solstice, one of the few bright spots at GM. Pontiac has received more than 15,000 orders for the car, even though it had planned to build only 20,000 units in the first year…

While the LaCrosse and the Impala will continue through 2008 MY at Oshawa GM Canada plant, the curtain will fall on both the Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo at mid-year, or December 2007. That's 10 or so more months of production on these cars. I guess that's to retool the portion of the Oshawa plant that will put out RWD cars. Some of you will be ecstatic. I just wish they had done a better job with these cars in the first place, allowing them to complete the full model year. Oh well.

full article here November 16, 2008 OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR What's Good for G.M. Is Good for the Army By WESLEY K. CLARK Little Rock, Ark. AMERICA'S automobile industry is in desperate trouble. Financial instability, the credit squeeze and closed capital markets are hurting domestic automakers, while decades of competition from foreign producers have eroded market share and consumer loyalty. Some economists question the wisdom of Washington's intervening to help the Big Three, arguing that the automakers should pay the price for their own mistakes or that the market will correct itself. But we must act: aiding the American automobile industry is not only an economic…

This is welcomed news for GM and many planned future products. I would hope this will remove the hold on the future Zeta cars and move Alpha forward. Detroit will need to stay moving ahead in fuel milage to stave off any more problems with DC House puts off tougher fuel economy rules Gordon Trowbridge / Detroit News Washington Bureau WASHINGTON -- House leaders decided Wednesday to put off a potentially divisive fight over auto fuel-economy rules, leaving until September the debate over how high a hurdle they'll set for the embattled domestic carmakers. With the Oshawa deal coming to a close it's pretty much a done deal they will get Zeta...sedans. You can almost count on the Impala staying in Oshawa & Zeta going there. Meaning, hey, the next Impala is RWD. Also, I fully expect the Buick sedan to be produced there too quite possibly with the Geeee8. Two plants are expected. One in Canada, one in the United States. The U.S. plant could be anywhere from Wilmington, to D-Ham to at least one more inbetween. That said, the plans are shaping up & Oshawa has solidified their spot for Zeta production.

Automotive News May 29, 2008 - 3:37 am ET UPDATED: 5/29/08 4:29 p.m. EDT DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors' top managers are working on additional restructuring measures to deal with a declining U.S. auto market and an accelerated shift from trucks to more fuel efficient vehicles, a person familiar with the plan told The Associated Press late Wednesday. The person, who requested anonymity because the plan is still being devised, would not give details of what is under discussion by Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner and his top managers. The source told the AP that GM will furlough entire shifts of workers at some truck factories and may move them to nearby car plants…

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration plans to give General Motors Corp. enough government aid to restructure over the next 60 days, while Chrysler LLC will get up to $6 billion and 30 days to complete an alliance with Italian automaker Fiat SpA. Two people familiar with the plan said Sunday it will demand further sacrifices from the automakers and bankruptcy would still be possible if the automakers failed to restructure. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to make details public. President Barack Obama was announcing his plan on Monday. It includes government backing of warranties for GM and Chrysler vehicles to give consum…

Will the Ultra V8 have HCCI? I was browsing today & came across the news from the Geneva auto show about GM's new 2.9l V6 diesel. It rang a bell for me, so I rummaged through some old bookmarks and came across this post. I originally dismissed the post as being nonsense or unbelievable, but now with the 2.9l being officially announced, it makes me wonder about the 4.5l V8 being mentioned -- is it the Ultra V8 rumored to replace the Northstar? HCCI huh? Sounds cool!

Spending Green To Go Green BMW, GM, DCX to spend $1 billion on hybrid transmissions By RICHARD TRUETT | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 08/11/06, 10:17 am et Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek Going green isn’t cheap. Andreas Truckenbrodt, executive director of hybrid powertrains for DaimlerChrysler, revealed General Motors, BMW and DaimlerChrysler will spend at least $1 billion to develop a pair of "Two Mode" hybrid transmissions to be used in full-sized SUVs, luxury vehicles and front-wheel-drive cars. The $1 billion is not equally divided among the automakers, said Larry Nitz, executive director of hybrid powertrain engineering for GM. That's because th…

"Our sources tell us that with this new Silverado, GM is accelerating its efforts to create an aluminum-intensive body to match the Ford F-series trucks. The next-gen truck — reportedly being developed with the internal code name T1XC — is expected to reach the market in late 2018 as a 2019 model. Our sources also told us that GM has made great efforts to refine its production processes with these lightweight materials, and promises a lighter, stronger and more efficient truck than its competitors. "It will be interesting to see how the next Silverado ultimately stacks up against the current F-150, and how GM will spin its recent criticism of aluminum-intensive truck…

"Rumor has it that GM is expected to make some radical changes to its full-size pickups in the form of aluminum-intensive construction in a bid to shed weight and improve fuel efficiency, following the F-150's move a few years ago. The company is said to be working on making stronger aluminum and learning from Ford's switch to aluminum. "The new Silverado will continue with refinements to the current V-8 engines, but it's also expected to get a diesel and mild hybrid option on the half-ton models. Currently the Duramax diesel comes only on heavy-duty trucks — and a turbocharged V-6 is also likely to join the lineup. A 10-speed automatic first seen in the Chevrolet Ca…

Told him how Chevy's focus on horsepower was a welcome relief. Told him how the Z06 and TBSS gave me hope that car guys were still running things at GM. We started talking about the Camaro concept and I told him if they build it without watering down the design, meaning build it very near the concept, I'd put one in my garage. His response was totally disturbing.... He said GM marketing is convinced they should write off buyers older than 40, since they won't be able to sell them many more cars anyway. He said GM Mktg believes younger buyers are only concerned with technology (bells and whistles) in their cars rather than horsepower and cubic inches. He was *very* s…

GM strike costing 760 vehicles per hour Mon Sep 24, 2007 2:59pm EDT | Link to Original Article @ Reuters DETROIT (Reuters) - The strike at General Motors Corp. will cause U.S. production losses of 760 vehicles per hour and could shut the automaker's facilities in Canada and Mexico within three days, a leading industry analyst said on Monday. Michael Robinet, an auto industry analyst with CSM Worldwide, said the United Auto Workers strike called Monday could have a cascading effect on GM production elsewhere. Initially, the shutdown of GM's U.S. plants will cost the automaker production of 12,200 vehicles per day, he said. If the strike continues for more than 36 hou…

GM, UAW reach tentative deal Details emerge Sharon Terlep | Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers reached a tentative agreement early this morning on a historic new labor contract, instantly ending a two-day strike and paving the way for GM to pay the union to take over $50 billion in retiree health care obligations. In calling off GM's first national walkout in 30 years, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said he is excited to present the deal to members and hopes to win ratification by the weekend. This is opinion but it mirrors my sentiments about GM, the UAW, DPH, etc... Strike? Consumers Couldn't Care Less By Warren Brown Sunday, April 9, 2006; Page G02 At last word, negotiators for the bankrupt Delphi Corp. and the United Auto Workers were at loggerheads. Delphi, once one of the world's greatest automotive parts suppliers, last week petitioned the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York for release from its labor agreements with the UAW and other unions. The petition, part of a larger plan to restructure Delphi into a smaller, more efficient company, also asks that Delphi be allowed to alter certain contracts between itself and its large…

General Motors stunned the automotive world last week, but it wasn’t for the usual negative reasons. Industry followers more accustomed to hearing about large layoffs or sickening sales declines were startled when GM said its U.S. sales rose 3.7 percent in February, even as its two domestic rivals, Ford and Chrysler, posted sizable declines and the overall market was flat. GM’s gain in the normally soft month was led by strong demand for its sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks including the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado. Even more impressive, the gain came without the huge sales incentives of previous years. Link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17467382/

Inspired by a statement made by Josh late yesterday regarding the use of portholes (a Buick trademark) on the '07 Cadillac Escalade: Original Thread My question, is which GM brand you think is strongest aside from Cadillac and Chevrolet. I've excluded GM's "bookend" brands because they're clearly going nowhere. Brands composed only of trucks (GMC and HUMMER) have also been left out. Be sure to consider the strength of the brand's current and near-future lineups (what's in the pipeline?), along with the brand's position in relation to other GM brands (too much overlap with another division?). Each has several pros a…

car connection "A new report from Merrill Lynch suggests that GM has been investing too little in new products for a long time and it isn't clear that even in the present crisis, the auto giant is prepared to change. "We believe GM will continue its historical pattern of underinvesting in product to the detriment of earnings and stock price," noted a new research report from John Murphy, Merrill Lynch's new auto analyst. "GM's market share losses are not new news. The company's consistent underinvestment is the primary driver of its consistent market share losses," the report says."

Lets say GM gets $25,000,000,000 in taxpayer dollars as a bailout. What do they do with it thats any different than what they've been doing the last decade or so? It seems to me they're saying "Give us money or we die now" instead of presenting an "If you give us money, we'll do x,y and z in order to survive" argument.

John Revill July 7, 2008 06:01 CET WROCLAW, Poland -- Chevrolet expects to increase its European sales by 10 percent to nearly a half million cars this year. "I think we can grow from 450,000 to close to 500,000 this year," Steve Flamand, Chevrolet Europe product marketing manager, said. Flamand said Chevrolet mainly expects to increase sales in growth markets such as Russia, Turkey and eastern Europe. But the brand also believes it can boost sales slightly in western Europe despite the region's economic downturn and forecasts for a flat new-car market in 2008. "For other volume brands, thinking about growth is quite a challenge," Flamand told Automotive News…

a base XL-7 2wd for like 23,500. with AWD it adds 1600. great deal. 7 passenger adds a grand. about 26,500 for the model with leather. the top model is another 2 grand, or 28,500. Maxxed out this thing would barely top 30g. I think this vehicle should sell well. the GM engine and features per dollar should make it a hit.

Okay, let's say that the board of directors decides to fire Rick Wagoner sometime in the near future. The question now is: Who takes his place? This is a question that I have been pondering over for the last few weeks. Some members of this forum seem to be hell-bent on seeing Wagoner get the boot, regardless of what the fallout would be. Others feel that Wagoner is doing as good a job as possible given the circumstances, and should not be fired at all. Still others (myself included) think that, while change at the top would be beneficial, there isn't much point in firing Wagoner if he would be replaced by another equally inneffective, GM-enculturated administrator; the…

I would think that every poster on Cheers and Gears would want to read what President's Obama's auto task force found to be wrong with GM's viability plan. Here are the details from Jamie LaReau of Automotive News: President Barack Obama's auto task force says General Motors will be hard-pressed to meet its projections in five key areas without dramatically restructuring the company. In response to the viability plan GM submitted Feb. 17, the task force demanded that GM intensify its restructuring over the next 60 days or face possible bankruptcy. In a statement released today, the task force criticized GM's assumptions in these areas: 1. Market share 2. Price…

TCC Test: 2007 Suzuki SX4 Though it's called a crossover, the SX4 has all the desirable attributes of a "station wagon"-you know, that ancient phrase for, um, essentially the same thing. It's a five-door hatchback with second-row seats that tumble forward for maximum cargo-carrying. Five passengers fit in its chairs, and as long as you're not the poor guy sitting in the middle of the second row, life is pretty good. And its bottom line includes one very coveted attribute: standard all-wheel drive. Suzuki says the $14,999 SX4 is the lowest-priced all-wheel-drive vehicle sold in the United States. TCC Test: 2007 Suzuki XL-7 Your first thought when shopping a crossover might not be Suzuki. It's one of the few brands known more for its name than its vehicles (what exactly is a Forenza, anyway?). And even then, the Suzuki most of us know has two wheels and a 200-mph top end. But that may change after a first drive of the new XL7. Suzuki doesn't have the cachet of a Honda or a Toyota , but its XL7 readily compares with the RAV4 and CR-V, and now offers seven-passenger seating, too. The sharply-dressed new XL7 is also a cheaper alternative to the coming class of crossovers that includes Ford's Edge and the Honda Pilot, as well as existing Subaru wagons. The Car Con…

GM Says Pricing Is Working PR spin prefaces sales figures due out this week. by Paul A. Eisenstein (2006-03-27) The "top-line" story isn't a good one for General Motors. The automaker expects to report a one-percent decline in first-quarter U.S. market share when March numbers are tallied up at the end of this week. But digging just a little deeper would reveal a more positive picture, senior company officials asserted during a Monday afternoon briefing for reporters. The decline in overall, or top-line, sales is largely the result of declining fleet sales, said GM's director of market analysis, Paul Ballew. On the retail side, he stressed, the automaker is act…

http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews...20070924?rpc=44 WASHINGTON, Sept 24 (Reuters) - The Teamsters union said on Monday it will honor the United Auto Workers strike against General Motors Corp (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research), saying it would not haul vehicles made by the automaker. "Workers should not solely bear the brunt of decades of bad business decisions by GM management," Teamsters President James Hoffa said in a statement. Wow, the Teamsters are joining with the UAW. This doesn't look good.

GM has reached a deal on the local contract with UAW Local 31 at the plant Tuesday evening , company spokesman Dan Flores said. We're certainly pleased that we have a tentative agreement , Flores said. "Obviously , Malibu and Aura are very important products for us." Industry analysts have said the strike in Kansas City and one at a key crossover vehicle plant in Delta Township ,Michigan(the Lambda's) were designed to draw GM into a long , bitter strike by the UAW against parts maker American Axle. Union officials , including UAW President Ron Gettelfinger , denied any connection and said the strikes were over local contract disputes. The UAW and American Axle reach…

I would just like to kindly thank you Miss Queen for saying what has needed to be said for years. Consumer Reports is nothing but a criminal "magazine" with obvious intentions in mind. The guts it took for you to stand up and say what was on your mind, as well as many within the company is nothing short of spectacular. I commend you for your admiration and dedication to the company. It's about time people within GM grow a back bone and stand up for what they believe in. It's just a shame it was retracted by the powers that be. What's Lori's e-mail address, I say we all personally thank her for expressing her true feelings on the matter.

WASHINGTON — It is not every 31-year-old who, in a first government job, finds himself dismantling General Motors and rewriting the rules of American capitalism. But that, in short, is the job description for Brian Deese, a not-quite graduate of Yale Law School who had never set foot in an automotive assembly plant until he took on his nearly unseen role in remaking the American automotive industry. Nor, for that matter, had he given much thought to what ailed an industry that had been in decline ever since he was born. A bit laconic and looking every bit the just-out-of-graduate-school student adjusting to life in the West Wing — “he’s got this beard that appears an…

N othing like a war of words to show the general public and the restructuring-weary at GM's RenCen and Ford Motor Co.'s Glass House that a few of them can still muster enough passion to play offense. In General Motors Corp.'s corner stands Mark LaNeve, 46, a former linebacker from the University of Virginia with roots in Pennsylvania's hardscrabble steel country, who helped revive Cadillac and now is the automaker's North American vice president for sales, service and marketing. In Ford's corner there's Mark Fields, 44, a Harvard biz school grad who, despite tours as president of Mazda Motor Corp. and Ford's premium brands in Europe, still carries the faint swagger of N…

Mark Reuss, General Motors and Rear Wheel Drive Reading the topic about Mark Ruess I was going to make a response about the upcoming "un-named" wonder known just as the SS. Then I as I got typing my simple response that became a not so simple response but a big concern... If this car actually seeing the light of day. Not that the question put up by someone worrying about the "little issues" getting fixed isn't important it is. (Just not to me!) I am thinking big picture, so here is what I am thinking and actually fear will happen. If this new SS actually is produced, and sitting on dealer lots, I will be thankfully proven wrong! I just believe this car CAN'T happ…

http://www.autoextremist.com/page2.shtml#Rant I do not agree with him much but this time he nails it. by Peter M. DeLorenzo The Canary in the Mineshaft. Detroit. The news of Delphi's bankruptcy filing may be just another piece of business news to those who don't live around these parts, or for those who don't have a vested interest in the U.S. auto industry, but the sad fact of the matter is that this development is just the tip of the iceberg in a fundamental shift that not only threatens to decimate the U.S. auto industry, it's one that will ultimately affect this nation's economy - no matter where you live or what you do. So guys.....I don't have a link to any website, just info that our GM and Sales Managers told us this morning........ Effective today, GMAC is implementing these new finance restrictions: 1) GMAC will not finance or lease any consumer with less than a 700-fica score.....period. 2) GMAC will not finance or lease any car deal for anything more than dealer invoice amount....that amount including sales tax and fees. The way I see it, in order to finance or lease a deal through GMAC, a dealer has to sell a car for invoice (or less?).....and the customer has to come up with down payment to cover taxes and fees. OR, if a dealer sells for over invoice, customer has to …

By Maria Panaritis INQUIRER STAFF WRITER The e-mail video that General Motors Corp. sent to its Saturn dealers last night was an odd mix of apology and pep rally. The automaker had just told Congress it would do away with Saturn as part of a drastic restructuring plan to qualify GM for billions more in emergency taxpayer loans. For 209 Saturn franchises across the country - a dozen of which are in the Philadelphia area - the news was potentially devastating. "I know you've been dealing with the emotion of it, the frustration of it, maybe even the anger of it," Jill Lajdziak, general manager of Saturn, said as dealers Tom Zimbrick and Todd Ingersoll sat by he…

Some info I have received seems to indicate this, at least in the Lambdas. Expect the Chevy Lambda to launch without a black tie radio, and expect all '09 MY Lambdas to not have black-ties. I would still expect the '09 Malibu to have it most likely, but the phase out is certainly starting. So, for new '09 MY and up vehicles, expect none to have black tie radios. ---------------- Click here to see what the future holds for GM's post-blacktie era radios. Dear Friends, It's high time to call a spade a spade. Mr G Richard "Red Ink Rick" Wagoner is nothing more than the evil incarnate, purposely placed atop General Motors for no more ryhme and reason than the planned decimation of the world's once largest industrial enterprise. This man, born in Wilmington Delaware, has been intentionally fast tracked. His placement as chief financial officer made no sense to outsiders as he leapfrogged many senior executives. His mission, which he readily accepted has been mostly fulfilled, spinning not winning, leading to our eventual bankruptcy. He is without doubt the worst sort of corporate criminal, personally responsible for the suf…

Automation Alley: Brains over brawn is Michigan's future By Daniel Howes / The Detroit News Comment on this story Send this story to a friend Get Home Delivery With the economic news growing grimmer by the week -- Delphi Corp. in bankruptcy and General Motors Corp. pushing the United Auto Workers for historic concessions, to name two pieces -- is there any hope out there? (Please transfer this topic to a more appropriate forum if there's a better place for it.) The Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Buick Divisions have all celebrated their respective centennials during the last decade. These were unforgettable events with highly visible participation and support by General Motors itself. In 2003, we saw Ford Motor Co. celebrate its centennial with a grand gathering in Dearborn. But we've heard nothing regarding General Motors' plans to celebrate its own centennial next year, and GM enthusiasts have been hoping for some indication that the company will plan an appropriate event. The Buick Club of America will return to Buick's hometown of …

Obviously, they are meant to "rally the troops" in an attempt to get the media and enthusiats shouting the praises of the company but lets look at one thing. With the exception of the sure-fire hit of Cadillac.....what has General Motors done to build on any brand, at all? They are slowly working into a "new" look for Chevrolet and Buick. Over at Pontiac the only thing selling is the Solstice, however the company plans for no different variants of the Kapppa which I feel is SUICIDIDE! Also, the Camaro is as you see it. Nothing more, nothing less. But, what about the Buick? The Pontiac? GM was quick to say "lets look at our hottest brand" but lets not. Lets inst…

OPENING BRIEF Statement of the Case "Rick" Wagoner, at 39 years of age, became Chief Financial Officer of the General Motors Corporation in 1992. Mr. Wagoner was promoted to head of North American Operations in 1994. In 2000, he was elevated to Chief Executive Officer. Upon the retirement of "Jack" Smith, the "fast track" was completed and the heir apparent assumed his current Chairman of the Board position. During the past FOURTEEN YEARS, this man has been a central figure in the hierarcy of GM management. He has undoubtedly been critically involved in the stategic planning of GM, and additionally has acted repeatedly, even methodically, in it's implementati…

David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau Washington -- Detroit's Big Three automakers came closer than America realized to becoming the Big Two. General Motors Corp. ended merger talks with Chrysler LLC in November 2008 to focus on getting emergency federal aid, but Chrysler continued to believe a tie-up with GM was its best chance for survival. In April, as both automakers were surviving on government aid and fighting bankruptcy, Obama administration officials spent two weeks working on a plan for GM to acquire Chrysler's best assets and keep the doors open on a third of its factories. Some members of President Barack Obama's auto task force saw it as a f…

MORAINE, Ohio (AP) — The General Motors Corp. plant in this Dayton suburb is a forest of smokestacks that form the nerve center of this industrial community built along the banks of the Great Miami River. Each day, about 2,500 workers file inside to assemble the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender sport utility vehicles. But some time before the summer of 2010, the Moraine plant will be no more: It is one of four that GM announced Tuesday it will close. And there are fears here that the people — and the city's fortunes — will disappear with it. The loss of the SUV plant will leave behind a bleak landscape for the surrounding community, an …

GM hated it. Live Bait & Ammo # 72 At the Detroit Economic Club Miller said that bankruptcy “is a growth industry in America.” It’s ironic that Miller thought the audience in Detroit would find his smugness amusing. I heard teeth grinding like a tranny that popped a drain plug. He claimed the typical bankruptcy costs “about $100 million a year in professional fees.” He did not include the social costs, i.e., the losses to workers, investors, and taxpayers. If we provide enough carcasses, the vultures will flourish and the restructuring of America—lost jobs, lower wages, higher health care costs, and defunct pensions—will create new opportunities for bankrupt…

What GM's Strike Means to Car Shoppers Link to Original Article @ KickingTires At 11 this morning, the United Auto Workers union went on strike at American GM plants. This basically shuts down production of many new GM cars, trucks and SUVs for the foreseeable future. But does that mean you won’t be able to find that new GM car, truck or SUV when you go car shopping in the immediate future? According to the latest inventory numbers, GM on average has enough vehicles for 67 days at the current rate of sales. Some hot vehicles like the Buick Enclave — built in Lansing, Mich. — only had a 26-day supply, which is roughly 3,600 vehicles, as of Sept. 1. Trucks and SUVs lik…
