Chevy, Apple champion veteran, new acts in 2005 By Michael Paoletta NEW YORK (Billboard) - Chevrolet's two-year-old musically charged "An American Revolution" campaign took on added urgency in 2005, thanks to savvy music licenses and partnerships. The automaker embraced a wide variety of sounds in its TV spots, encompassing veteran artists and under-the-radar acts. Surprisingly, it replaced Bob Seger's "Like a Rock," which was the soundtrack for the Silverado campaign for 14 years, with "Now More Than Ever," a 14-year-old track from John Mellencamp. Elsewhere, Chevy championed dance/electronic (the Scumfrog's "Music Re…

Hybrids great on gasoline savings but not expense, study finds Based on $5-a-gallon fuel, Edmunds.com ranks the gas-only Chevrolet Aveo hatchback No. 1 in terms of total ownership cost. Honda's partly electric-powered Civic comes in 10th, while Toyota's Prius is 26th. By Martin Zimmerman | Los Angeles Times Staff Writer June 26, 2008 Beating out hybrids, the Honda Fit made it to the top of Consumer Reports' list of 10 most economical new cars. It ranked third on a similar list from Edmunds.com. (Honda) Hybrids may be tops when it comes to saving gasoline, but they're far from the best choice for budget-conscious car buyers, a new study says. The four-door ha…

I don't know if GM is running the same ad campaign in the US, but it's got me completely baffled. For months now, the overall message I've got from Chevy's ads is that losers should buy a Chevy. Their website pretty much sums it up. http://www.johnny.ca/ You can view the commercials there as well. Check out the one for the Aveo. Some chick wants to get some from Johnny and all he's concerned about is getting a parking ticket. What message are they trying to send? I honestly don't get it and it sure as hell doesn't make me want to drive a Chevy!!

China losing cheap labor allure More U.S. companies find savings are drained by errors, shipping costs and engineering changes. By Ron French / The Detroit News STERLING HEIGHTS -- Hal Zaima was in love with China. The owner of KenSa, an auto parts supplier based in Sterling Heights, gazed at the other side of the globe and saw things of beauty: factories ready to make his automotive wire harnesses, a favorable exchange rate and a limitless supply of workers willing to work for pennies, with more getting off trains each day from the vast countryside. In fall 2004, KenSa sold its last American factory and was negotiating to form a joint venture in Wuhu, Ch…

DETROIT, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Talks on a deal to sell Chrysler LLC to Nissan Motor Co and Renault SA have halted because the No. 3 U.S. automaker's owner favors a deal with General Motors Corp), The Detroit News reported on Saturday. Citing sources familiar with the situation, the newspaper said no further talks have been scheduled between private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP, which sees a deal with No. 1 U.S. automaker GM as financially more advantageous and better for the struggling U.S. auto industry. In an earlier report, The Detroit News said the Nissan-Renault alliance had proposed buying 20 percent of Chrysler. A spokesman for Cerberus declined to …

[New York Times] Chrysler's Fall May Help Administration Reshape G.M. WASHINGTON — Fresh from pushing Chrysler into bankruptcy, President Obama and his economic team are hoping that the hard line they took last week gives them leverage to force huge changes in General Motors, a far larger and more complex company. Officials say that, difficult as Mr. Obama's decision was on Wednesday to take all the risks of a Chrysler bankruptcy, the politics of reshaping G.M. will be far harder. Already a shadow of the company that once dominated the American landscape, G.M. will be forced to eliminate tens of thousands of additional jobs and close fa…

I think I'm going to projectile vomit. Cruze!? I was waiting for GM to come out with a replacement for my Cobalt and now they think I'm going to buy a Chevy Cruze!? Who in Gods name came out with that idiotic, moronic, witless name? I didnt think they should change the name at all but I would have had no problem if they changed it to Nova, Chevelle, Monza, even Optra. To make matters worse they are waiting until 2010 in their weakest market to sell the replacement while not improving the current Cobalt at all! What do they think the resale value will be on current Cobalts? What about all the Cobalt fansites that exist now? Cruze? Oh man, I think I am going to have …

The CTS received a rating of "excellent" to vault past the BMW 328i and the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C300, which were rated "very good." We have seen the beat on set now it is the Corvette XR1? and a updated Bumble Bee Z/28?. I know the Camaro is one of the two GTO based cars but it has been updated in several areas. The hood and front splitter look to be possible Z/28 parts as the hood would give added clearance for a supercharger and the spitter would give more front down force for the car like on the ZR-1. Also the wheels were used on the Convertable prototype at one point. Also note the black sections on the bumpers that could have the brake cooling and fog lights. Note the headlights look more like the production car as we expect them. Also the Vette XR1 is one I have not see or hea…

Full Article: Changes To Come - Yahoo Excerpt from Article: According to a manufacturer source, NASCAR officials have floated one solution to the apparent problem to the series' manufacturers. It involves changing the cars that race in the series from the current models being run in the Nextel Cup Series to smaller, sportier ones. The current Busch Series cars are slightly smaller versions of their Nextel Cup cousins. In the past, the Busch Series used makes of cars not used in the Cup series, as well as V-6 engines instead of Cup V-8s, but now the cars used in the two series are more alike. If the two series ran cars that differed more from each other, it would grea…

Rumors of tomorrow's "important changes" at GM have approached a fevered pace, but the latest one we've heard is coming directly from someone who's directly related to someone who could be directly affected if the rumor is true. So, it must be true, right? Anyway, we've just been told by the family of a Chevy Volt engineering team member that not only is the untouchable Volt program on hold, GM's even letting some of the engineering team, aka "the chosen people," go. Hit the jump for the full rumor. "My uncle works on the Volt as an engineer. He's getting laid off Friday because apparantly the project (aka VOLT) is on hold indefinitely." TORONTO — Premier Dalton McGuinty says Ontario will continue to offer incentives to the auto sector despite the controversy surrounding the planned shutdown of a General Motors of Canada Ltd. truck plant in Oshawa, Ont. The move by GM, which will affect about 2,600 jobs when it closes next year, will not deter his Liberal government from providing other loans to secure investment, Mr. McGuinty said Wednesday as debate over the closure continued to rage. Nor, he said, would his government think twice about making other loans on the generous terms as the one extended to GM. “It's not something we pull out of the air,” he said. “It's based on what the competition's doi…

Reuters / August 25, 2005 FRANKFURT -- DaimlerChrysler and General Motors have clinched their deal to co-develop new hybrid vehicle technology, a GM spokesman said on Thursday. The partners had announced in December an agreement in principle to develop hybrids as they try to catch up with Japanese rivals on the fuel-saving systems that reduce harmful emissions. "We now have a binding and definitive agreement on development of a full hybrid system," the spokesman said, adding it took effect on Aug. 22. The automakers have said they will develop a "two-mode" hybrid technology that boosts both acceleration and fuel economy by 25 percent and…

When cars were America's idols STATUS: A Cadillac, this one a 1958 Eldorado, topped GM’s “Ladder of Success,” a shrewd marketing strategy that welded a link between who we are and what we drive. --- Dan Neil June 1, 2009 If you were to walk up to a typical New York executive in the 1960s -- think Don Draper in AMC's "Mad Men" -- and tell him that General Motors Corp. would be in bankruptcy by 2009, he would have thought you were delusional, or perhaps a Communist. http://www.autoextremist.com/current/ November 26, 2008 Washington to Detroit: Drop Dead. By Peter M. De Lorenzo Detroit. The glee with which the Washington establishment - and every two-bit instant car “expert” who decided it was high time to weigh-in with his or her opinions - attacked Detroit and what’s left of the U.S. car industry last week was a sight to behold. Everyone from chief knucklehead Michael Moore to Neil Young (Neil Young?) got on the “Detroit Deserves to Die” bandwagon, adding to the chaos with their naively-crafted pop logic musings and “finger-snap” solutions. It was truly pathetic. Starting with the stunningly ill-informed members of the …

July 15, 2009 “Maximum Bob” leading GM marketing? It’s not as crazy as it sounds... By Peter M. De Lorenzo (Posted 7/13, 1:30pm) Detroit. And then last Friday GM made the stunning announcement as it emerged from bankruptcy that not only was Bob Lutz foregoing his retirement plans scheduled for the end of this year, he was returning to an active role in the company as Vice Chairman charged with leading the company’s marketing, advertising and public relations functions, basically anything and everything…

Was on auto row today and noticed that the Pontiac sign on my local dealer's building here north of LA has been covered up. The GM pylon sign out front still has "Pontiac" but will likely be replaced by "Cadillac" as the dealer has replaced his Cadillac-only store with Volkswagen(!) and has moved Cadillac in with Buick/GMC. Interestingly, the HUMMER sign at the same Buick/GMC dealership has not been covered up/removed yet despite the lack of new inventory. The Saturn dealer down the street still has his sign up but no new inventory. What's going on in your town?

The offers of $1,000 cash rebates on such vehicles as the 2007 and 2008 Chevrolet Silverado large pickup and GMC Envoy SUV, began Tuesday and run through the end of the month, GM spokesman John McDonald told Bloomberg. GM also extended through Oct. 31 its offer of zero-percent financing for up to five years on some SUVs and large pickups, McDonald said. The $1,000 cash rebates are in addition to other incentives and can't b…

I think we need one, tidy little thread in which we can succinctly state all the possible outcomes of this Delphi vs. UAW debacle going on right now. The reason being, I think that we can use our information to deduce all the possible ways that this will affect GM. Only a few rules I want to mention: - Don't get into a big pissing match/flame war here. There are plenty of other threads where you can have fightin' words. - Try and keep theories as simple and easy to comprehend as possible. Not all of us are business majors. - Even if you think your theory is stupid or implausible (e.g: the UAW accepts Delphi's $9/hour offer), chime in anyway. The more d…

I can't believe this, and it's no wonder the workers that got paycuts and buyout are furious. I would be too if I worked my fingers to the bone and then agree to a paycut and then find out the higher-ups want to pat themselves on each others backs and get a fat payout!! Delphi seeks court OK to pay up to $37 million in executive bonuses David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau WASHINGTON -- Delphi Corp. will seek court approval to pay its top 400 executives between $20.2 million to $37.6 million in bonuses through the end of the year, but hasn't disclosed how much its executives might get after the company exits bankruptcy protection. Delphi delays motion to void union contracts Friday 17 February 2006, 10:46am EST By David Bailey CHICAGO, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Bankrupt auto parts supplier Delphi Corp. on Friday said it would delay to the end of March filing court papers to void its labor contracts and to cut retiree benefits, citing progress in talks with unions and its former parent General Motors Corp. A filing, which could have come as early as Friday, would not immediately have led to a strike at Delphi, which in turn would quickly cripple U.S. automaker GM. However, it was seen as likely heightening tensions in the complex negotiations among the three groups. Delphi filed the biggest bankrupt…

This just into C&G: Delphi is now in front of the Bankruptcy board and has made it their very first mention and note that they want new contract negotiations with the UAW to happen starting next week, with a new agreement coming to pass before the end of '06. General Motors would not say much, except Mr. Lutz stating that General Motors plans to produce 85% of their content in North America, however General Motors as a company were not the ones to mandate that, giving heavy speculation that it is the Unions job to meet wage concessions with the worlds #1 automaker. More into C&G as we get it!

From TCC The chances of Delphi Corp. winding up in bankruptcy court are rising as the United Auto Workers balks at the concessions demanded by Delphi's management. Claudia Baucus, Delphi spokeswoman, said the company would not comment on the discussions with GM or the UAW. Richard Shoemaker, head of the UAW GM Department, also has declined to discuss the ongoing discussions with GM and Delphi publicly. However, according to accounts from local union leaders who attended the GM Council meeting in Chicago recently, Shoemaker noted Delphi's management has presented the union with a long list of demands, including sweeping cuts in wages and benefits. Delphi a…

Delphi reaches labor deal with UAW, GM Deal, if approved, would include one-time payouts from GM in exchange for lower hourly wages for Delphi workers Link to Original Article @ CNNMoney.com | June 22 2007: 9:12 PM EDT CHICAGO (Reuters) -- Delphi Corp. said Friday it had reached a tentative deal with the United Auto Workers and former parent General Motors Corp. intended to allow the auto parts maker to cut wages and emerge from bankruptcy. The deal, which must be ratified by UAW members and approved by federal bankruptcy court, would clear a major risk for former Delphi parent GM (down $0.43 to $35.53, Charts, Fortune 500), which remains Delphi's biggest customer and…

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060330/ap_on_...DNqBHNlYwM3NDk- DETROIT - Auto supplier Delphi Corp. is expected to ask a federal judge to cancel its union contracts Friday, an action that could lead to a devastating strike, the United Auto Workers said. ADVERTISEMENT Delphi had set a deadline of Thursday to reach an agreement with its unions and General Motors Corp. that would lower wages for its 34,000 U.S. hourly workers, but it appeared unlikely Delphi would meet that goal. In a message on its Web site Thursday, UAW said Delphi would file motions to void its contracts on Friday morning. A message was left seeking comment from Delphi. The UAW, which represents t…

Delphi to Accelerate Talks With GM Monday November 28, 9:39 am ET Delphi to Accelerate Talks With GM Regarding Its Restructuring DETROIT (AP) -- Delphi Corp. said Monday it would accelerate talks with General Motors Corp. regarding its restructuring as the nation's leading auto-parts supplier works to emerge from bankruptcy and reach an agreement with its unions on wage cuts. Delphi also said it would push back a Dec. 16 court date to ask a bankruptcy judge to eliminate union contracts if it had not reached a deal with labor unions. The meeting would not take place until at least Jan. 20, 2006, the company said. "These constructive actions demonstrate …

Desperate Ad Wars GM Fights back at Volkswagen and Chrysler Success February 15th, 2010 Op Ed - Drew Dowdell - Chief Editor, CheersandGears.com The Wall Street Journal yesterday noted that GM's marketing chief, Joel Ewanick, acknowledged that Chrysler and Volkswagen had won "the buzz war" during the Superbowl last week with their "Imported from Detroit" and Mini-Darth Vader ads respectively. Not one to simply acknowledge defeat, Ewanick sent an email back to the crew manning the GM Marketing Mothership to start buying up keywords on Google's marketing system. The idea being if someone searched for "Imported from Detroit" on Google, instead of getting the Eminem…

Rick Kranz | | Automotive News / April 24, 2006 - 6:00 am NEW YORK - While newspapers have been filled with headlines about job cuts at General Motors, the automaker's design studio has been adding jobs. "The corporation believes in what we are doing," Ed Welburn, vice president for global design, said in an interview this month at the New York auto show. "They realize the importance of design and having choices, design alternatives for the leadership to make those tough decisions. So we are continuing to hire." GM's studios across the globe have been expanding. Welburn was unable to say how many jobs were added, but said: "Last year we hired 14 designers alone …

Despite massive restructuring, thousands of buyouts... GM keeps rollin' Brett Clanton / The Detroit News Link to Original Artcle @ DetNews John Brooks works at the Orion Township assembly plant, where more than one third of 2,700 workers took cash buyouts or early retirement packages. ORION TOWNSHIP -- It's hard to say which is more astonishing: that General Motors Corp. is cutting nearly 35,000 U.S. factory jobs this year or that the automaker's plants, by all accounts, are still running smoothly amid the jaw-dropping downsizing. There have been small hiccups along the way, and more are possible as thousands of GM workers depart in waves through December and the …

Detroit Automakers Try Some New Tricks Linkity The Big Three Improve Cars But Then Find It HardTo Get Buyers to Notice By NEAL E. BOUDETTE September 14, 2007; Page B1 Just about every month, CNW Market Research meets with a group of would-be car buyers and plays a trick on them. Sometimes the company, which specializes in auto sales trends, takes a Toyota Camry, removes any identifying logos, and tells them it's a new model from one of the U.S.-based auto makers. Or it takes a domestic car and tells them it's a Toyota or another import make. Either way, the result is the same. "If they think it's an American car, the perception of the vehicle falls …

By Keith Naughton Newsweek March 13, 2006 issue - GM chief designer Ed Welburn sweeps into his Chevrolet design studio and it's as if he were stepping back in time. On one side of the cavernous white room, designers huddle over a silver retro remake of the Chevy Camaro. A few steps away, stylists scurry around a future Chevy family car that ripples with sinewy muscles from a bygone era. Papering the walls of the studio are photos of classic iron from Detroit's halcyon postwar years—the chiseled '65 Chevy Impa…

So where's all the news about Toyota's recalls?! Instead the Detroit News reports that the big 3 market share is the worst ever. Why can't Toyota's bad news be on the front page?!! Please post your comments on this. GM is on their biggest turnaround, and are doing this faster than ever but for some reason everyone wants to pile on them-STILL. It seems GM can't do any right in the American medias eyes, yes I know there are some positive reports finally coming out, but the tide has not turned fully yet. Ford on the other hand...sorry guys I can't help you there! http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=AUTO01

Hillary Clinton calls for 55 mpg by 2030 David Shepardson and Gordon Trowbridge / Detroit News Washington Bureau WASHINGTON -- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton proposed hiking fuel economy standards to a combined fleetwide average of 55 miles per gallon by 2030. She also pledged to offer domestic automakers $20 billion in low-interest government loans to help retool factories. Clinton, the New York Democratic senator, has courted the United Auto Workers and met with domestic auto CEOs, but been at odds with them on fuel economy requirements. In a speech Monday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she joined Democratic rivals in taking a hard line on requi…

Detroit Media Reaction The lead headline on the Detroit Free Press’s Web site this morning asks: “How long can the strike last?” In theory, the paper says, the answer is: a long time. The UAW has a strike fund that could keep workers off the job for a year, the newspaper reports. “But the frightening effects a national strike would have on UAW members, their households and the many other businesses and individuals who rely on GM for their livelihoods likely would come much sooner.” In the paper’s main editorial on the opinion page, the headline reads: “It’s hard to see any winners in strike.” “Coupled with state government’s impending meltdown for lack…

The strangest thing about the crisis in the American auto industry is this: Nobody outside of Detroit seems to care. General Motors (nyse: GM - news - people ) could go down. Ford Motor (nyse: F - news - people ) could go down. If either company fails, hundreds of thousands of workers could lose their jobs and health benefits. I'm not saying that this is going to happen. I'm just saying that the American people and the leaders in Washington don't seem particularly concerned about the traditional U.S. auto industry. I remember when we used to say that one in six jobs in America was connected to the automobile industry. I remember in 1953 when the head of …

EXCLUSIVE FREE PRESS INTERVIEW: Wagoner: GM's very much alive Don't write off carmaker yet, CEO says September 10, 2006 BY JOE GUY COLLIER Link to Original Article at Detroit Free Press General Motors Corp. Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner has taken his fair share of criticism this year. Some in the business media have called for him to step down. Wall Street analysts put odds on the likelihood of GM filing for bankruptcy. A major investor pushed him into talks with Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. about forming an alliance. So, after a string of positive developments -- costs are down, operating profits are up -- Wagoner can hardly be blamed for being on the offensi…

We know GM is developing diesels for the US. My question is how are these going to be released? Will they be launched just in new models and MCEs, or will they be made available for all models that can take them ASAP? The reason I am asking this is that my ideal vehicle would be an SRX, and I am wondering the probability that GM would release a diesel version of it as the engine becomes available, especially since its future is in doubt. I want to be green as well as plan for the future (diesel engines can switch to biodiesel fuel with no problem, whereas a gasoline engine making a fuel switch needs modifications).

By Jason Stein Automotive News / September 26, 2005 DETROIT -- General Motors is considering diesel engines as an option on some models of its next-generation SUVs, GM's top truck executive says. Gary White, GM vice president and vehicle line executive for full-sized trucks, says GM is mulling alternative fuels for SUVs built on its GMT 900 architecture due next year. "Diesels certainly would be considered a viable option sometime during the life cycle of this truck," White says. "We've got some pretty aggressive emission standards coming, and when you move those into the SUV category, the emissions are even more stringent. We've got…

Link Report: Kerkorian sells full stake in GM General Motors' Corp.'s painful process of reinventing itself apparently will continue without Kirk Kerkorian, whose ownership of almost 10 percent of the world's largest automaker failed to become a lever for the changes he sought. The Wall Street Journal, citing a person familiar with the matter, reported in Friday's edition that the billionaire investor sold his entire remaining investment in GM -- 28 million shares -- at $29.95 a share, a transaction worth more than $800 million. The newspaper reported that the shares were sold to Bank of America, a key lender to Kerkorian..

The ATLAS family is DOHC. Thanx in advance for replies....

You guys should know what a backer of GM I am. I have never owned anything but. Christ, I started this site 6 years ago to defend them in the media. But they have really pissed me off now. Here's a warning to anyone looking at purchasing a G6, DO NOT BUY THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF UNLESS YOU LIKE SQUEAKS, RATTLES AND OTHER ANNOYING NOISES. GM knows there is a problem, I have found two TSBs about the sunroof. I called Pontiac Owner Care and they couldn't find any TSBs (I had to, of course, find them on my own on the internet - Thanks Flat Rate Tech) so they are useless. Once I had the TSB numbers, I called the dealer to make sure they knew what they were and scheduled…
