Wife clipped the rear view mirror off the Taurus X this morning. Sliced it off by hitting the garage can out in the driveway waiting for the garbage man. Oh man, so don't need this. Any folks familiar with body work know what it's gonna cost me? (money I don't gots), over 500 I suppose. Heated mirrors with puddle lamp. At least the glass part is in tact. Holdin it all together with electrical tape right now.

I bought my first Cadillac in 2002 for the huge sum of $200. It was a 1987 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance, white with a white vinyl top, blue leather interior, blue pinstripping and the spanish-gold emblem package. 132,000 miles. Then years later I bought my tripple-silver 1986 Fleetwood Brougham, this one had 172,000 on the odometer. Having owned several others over the past few years I got another 1986 Fleetwood Brougham yesterday. I took my paycheck and called a number I got off warped & torn FOR SALE sign and negotiated away. I had every intention of having this be Julie's car for a few weeks while we save up for a better domiscile but it looks like…

What?! Did you expect a new car or something? Yeah, that's my $20k car. No. Really. It is! Just ask the Cashier at the Kwik-Fill in Clarion! So, the story goes as is. I'm riding around with a few friends and I'm aching for gas. I go to pull into the BP, when my one friend says to go to the Kwik-Fill because they have his favorite gummy fish. So I do. I get out and as soon as I walk inside I hear "Hey, is that a Cutlass or a Grand Prix". I answer. He says "How much? I'll buy it". I let out a little laugh and find the gummy fish my friend wanted. I walk up to pay as he continues to talk about it. He says "That car is worth alot of money, especially sitting on the origina…

I used to psychologically squeeze by at $ 2.99 a gallon. Now, it's clearly above $ 3.00. It has definitely changed my driving habits. I was never a lead-foot to begin with, but now I am more cognizant about my RPMs...I try to keep them nice and low at cruise. But, more so than this, I noticed I am driving less...by just not going somewhere or grouping errands. The reason I think about this is that it is really $h!ty for the economy. Malls, restaurants, dry cleaners and such depend on you getting into your car as much as you did before to keep their business operations on par with previous years. You know that people are driving somewhat less and…

It's certainly not my driveway... Oh no, it's far from here. In fact, it's in the middle of the woods... It just didn't make it home in one piece. ...f@#king flat tires. This is the second one on a set of perfectly good tires, atleast, good enough to have passed inspection. This time, I didn't have a spare tire, since, it's in use from the flat I had a month ago. As per my wish list, new tires are in order. And, well, I have to work tomorrow morning. This is going to be interesting. Shopping... on black friday... for tires. Then... getting the Beast... and putting the new tires on... all before work. Granted, I don't think my Mom works, so I could just get a ride to …

Fortwos come with luxury options like heated leather seats and power steering. The 8-foot, 8-inch Smart Fortwo micro car comes to U.S. shores in January, and even with gasoline prices well above the $3-a-gallon mark it remains to be seen whether Americans will flock to buy the tiny, two-seater car. Ranging in price from $11,590 for the base version to $16,590 for a fully loaded Fortwo Passion convertible, the 1,800-pound car boasts 40 miles per gallon — a big draw for drivers worried about high gas prices. Smart has already sold more than 770,000 Fortwos in 36 countries, and Smart USA is banking on robust sales in the United States. The Smarts on sale here will be made…

Just wanted to stop in and say hello to fellow C&G'ers. I'll get right to the point and say that it's Josh and I'm obviously under my username that I use on Solstice Forums. I've pretty much given up Internet blogging and GM sites as some readers of my site here may know. I'm just too busy. I recently went to work for GM at the Livonia Powertrain plant and it's been quite the experience. They hired me on July 14th after their 2 week shutdown ended. As most of you here know the Livonia Powertrain plant produces the Northstar V8. My first week saw a lot of orientation and plant tours then we got to work the second week. I learned 4 jobs in 2 days on "the line" and …

I am guilty of eating at McDonald's this evening on the way home. Some McDonald's have newspaper boxes in the drive-thru lane for breakfast customers, painted in McD's colors. So the deal is I finally want to make a website for...uhmmm.....whatever this is that I'm doing as a career lately. Only every front door design I've come up with....well....sucks. So here is what you'd be designing. Basically all I need is a front door for "Chris Doane Automotive." I dont have a logo or anything yet. I'd also need some kind of buttons (or some design element) linking off the front door to pages for "Prototype Spy Photography," "Automotive Product Photography" and "Future Product Information." As for tech specs...I assume anyone doing this will have Photoshop. Please keep all the design elements in seperate layers so I can adjust them afterwards if I wa…

I have a KitchenAid dishwasher that came with the house, and it appears to be a real oldie, with big ol' chrome pushbutton controls. When I set it, it heats the water for a little while, then doesn't wash. I thought it was out of sync somehow, but I have not been able to resynchronize it (happened a couple of years ago and I was able to get it work properly then). Does anyone have experience with these? Does anyone have a clue of what's wrong with it? Should I spend the money to have it looked at, or junk it and buy a new one? This is likely going to put a dent in my pickup truck fund. I've been washing dishes this week for the first time since I bought my house…

This beautiful day, I want to go driving. With the windows down, and the warm breeze. A day to forget all the ugly things going on in this country, all this sudden destruction of our stylish industry... the automobile. It has gone from a loved part of life to an evil that some people want to see destroyed. That destruction is here, big, terrible and bright. The other side, the aftermath, looks bleak and cold from my desk. So I'm going driving. It could be to the beach, or to the city. I don't know yet. But I'll take my camera.

Republicans Grow Skeptical On Free Trade By JOHN HARWOOD Link October 4, 2007; Page A1 WASHINGTON -- By a nearly two-to-one margin, Republican voters believe free trade is bad for the U.S. economy, a shift in opinion that mirrors Democratic views and suggests trade deals could face high hurdles under a new president. The sign of broadening resistance to globalization came in a new Wall Street Journal-NBC News Poll that showed a fraying of Republican Party orthodoxy on the economy. While 60% of respondents said they want the next president and Congress to continue cutting taxes, 32% said it's time for some tax increases on the wealthiest Americans to redu…

A hit and run in a local parking lot....and just pushed that car right into another car and kept going (I can feel for the girls-It happened to the Cobalt a few weeks ago).... WASHINGTON – An elderly gunman opened fire with a rifle inside the crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday, gravely wounding a security guard before being shot. Authorities said they were investigating a white supremacist as the possible shooter. The assailant was in critical condition, said Washington, D.C., Mayor Adrian Fenty. D.C. Police Chief Kathy Lanier said the gunman appeared to have acted alone. He was "engaged by security guards immediately after entering the door" with a rifle, she said. The museum normally has a heavy security presence with guards positioned both inside and outside. All visitors are required to pass through metal detectors at…

Very long list, I wont bother to copy it all over here. I will say this, some very very not good songs on it. Clicky for full list I have to admit, seeing Too Drunk to F*ck on any best songs lists is awesome, Hunger Strike should be higher than 471, Jump by Kriss Kross (seriously, wtf?) The list is bogus, complete crap, like four good songs on it. We should destroy Blender magazine. I mean come on, the list has the Macarena in the top 200.

So I was talking to a friend today and he said his dad was buying himself a brand new FJ Cruiser to replace his 1996 Grand Voyager. Apparently he paid cash for it already and is taking delivery on Thursday. So what did I do? I told his son about the Frame problems, and showed pictures, and directed him to this site and others and told him of some of Toyota's other follies that nobody gets to here about. Last I heard, his dad was on his way to the Toyota dealer to tell the salesman the deal was off. () Chock one up for the good guys.

I have always loved the 2-door Tahoes and Yukons but searching for them online is a hassle. They always slip between the cracks in any search and I end up entering every configuration of 2-door Tahoe(Yukon) as in 2dr Tahoe, 2-door Tahoe, Tahoe 2-door, etc. or sifting through thousands of 4-doors just to find a handful of 2-door listings. What a PITA! So, if you run across any let me know.

If it's not one thing, it's another. My Dell Latitude laptop JUST had the AC adapter replaced because the previous was going bad...I had a new one sent all the way from the Netherlands. As of yesterday, the screen on my laptop started going dark upon being plugged into AC power...it works fine on battery power, but as soon as you plug into the wall, it turns dark gray to the point where you can see things open but it's impossible to read anything on the screen. Linkity LONDON (AFP) - Troubled soul singer Amy Winehouse kicked off her 17-date tour with a shambolic performance that saw fuming fans booing and marching out, reports said Thursday. The concert at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, was a chance for the 24-year-old to get back to singing and put her woes behind her. Winehouse has had "health issues" -- widely reported to be drug and alcohol abuse -- and her party-loving husband Blake Fielder-Civil is being held on grievous bodily harm and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice charges. But Wednesday's gig at the NIA, which can hold up to 13,000 people, was slammed by angry fans as a "disgrace" after she…

The Story: A good friend of mine that I have gotten to know over the past six years is car shopping and in need a of a midsize sedan. Looking for some verified, SPECIFIC dates: When was Saturn announced ? My son was getting extremely rambunctious (probably the first 2.5 year old to ever be that way) so I pulled out his gigantic Hot Wheels collection. Barely a peep out of him since, he's on the office floor playing with all the cars, occasionally making "Vroom, Vroom" noises. His favorites seem to be the Plymouth Prowler and BMW 850ci. Most of "his" Hot Wheels are my old ones, including what appears to have been a Citation hatchback that I de-roofed at some point.

I've been an advocate of RWD my whole life, but the upcoming Monte Carlo SS, I gotta admit, has me dreaming. My latest scheme is this... How about a white one with Ebony cloth interior (too bad there's no blue) and I'd add blue tape stripes around the bottom exactly like the '83 (except for the lettering)? For some odd reason I'd love to see what that would look like. Does that sound 80's retro cool or hopelessly tacky? Don't hold back, tell me what you really think, and while we're at it, are there any other new cars you'd like to see with retro graphics treatments? Paulie's "Edmunds" Review: 1992 Buick Century When most people think of a family sedan, they think of the Toyota Camry, the Honda Accord, the Hyundai Elantra, or even a Ford Aspire, but many fail to consider Buick's Century (because we tell them not to). The Century, part of an aging design on a decrepit body, using GM's tried-and-true, super-old crappy, err, I mean OHV, 3300 engine, is just one of the offered engines in the lineup. Families trying to save a penny here or there can stick with the anemic standard 4-banger (and boy does it bang!), 110-hp engine, but most will opt for the 6. The 3300 delivers 160 mediocre horses, and 185f…

How many model/nameplates in each GM division appeal to you? I don't mean that you think a given model is a good choice in class, makes sense for you, is financially sensible. I mean which do you look at and say "I'd like to have one of those". How many from each GM division make the cut for you?

I just joined a gym, literally 5 minutes ago, online. It's only like 3 miles from my house. I stopped by there this morning and took a tour, led by a perky young lady. The place seems very low key, and I'm hoping it will help me keep fit over the winter. My biggest fear is looking like a complete doofus. Will the treadmill throw me off the back? Will I strangle myself when I drop the 25 pound barbell on my neck? I've never done anything like this before. I'm hoping it will be a good move. Does anyone else here belong to a gym? Do you have any funny or odd experiences you can share?

Bad News: Engine light on Cruze goes off for about the 7th time (not exaggerating) Good News: Seems to be running mostly OK. Decide to drive it to work and fix it in the morning. Bad News: Don't realize everything's iced over and fall down the front steps on the way out of my house, landing on my hip. Now I walk like an old man. Good News: Get to the dealership and they're very helpful and promise to look at it quickly as they're not busy. Bad News: More serious issues with this Cruze, the PCV valve needs replacement. Good News: This time, it's covered under warranty. (unlike the trottle body - how the F--- is that not powertrain?) Bad News: Parts are not readily av…

Today, we had to hand in current events for my globalization class, and I turned in the one about the Republicans growing weary of free trade. In my analysis of it, I talked about how free trade was beneficial to keeping a society from becoming stagnant, but how countries that place protectionist policies on their own markets should be countered with protectionist policies here that would promote fairer trade. I also mentioned GM in it and the large effect it had on the economy. So as my professor starting discussing my article with the rest of the class, he misspoke a few things that I said that made it sound like I was for imposing protectionism on everything which i…

The other day, my friend's 1996 Buick LeSabre died on him and he's already spent in excess of $2500 in the last two months rebuilding the engine and doing the head gasket... turns out there was something was screwy with the rebuild on the engine and the cylinder chambers need to be re machined... the fuel gauge and odometer have stopped working properly, and it's eating coolant into either the engine or tranny. For a car with 170'000K, he doesn't want to keep pumping money into it... meaning he's in the market for a new vehicle. He says he doesn't want another American Car, and is looking at some Toyotas, Hondas, the Volvo 850/S70 and the Jetta. I've tried to talk hi…

Here across the pond, pizza tends to be served on an individual basis, is less expensive than in the states and is delicious. I had thin crust pizza the last 2 nights -- topped with olives, artichokes, prosciutto and mushrooms. Fantastic. I really don't like thick crust pizza because I like tasting the ingredients. Which type of crust do you like?

Today was the first day it really felt hot. Car thermometer said 130 when I started, but after a few min w/ the A/C on, it settled down to 100. Though one TV news channel says it was only 98. Well, 6 months of heat begins. Looking forward to getting in pool soon. Supposed to be 102 tomorrow, then cool down to the 90s for a few days.

...here I come? I've always wanted to visit Cali, for at least a few years now. I'm sitting there at work today though, and it hit me that I'd love to hit many of the places California has to offer: Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Redwood Forest, drive the PCH, etc. My mom keeps wanting to go to the Carolinas and/or Florida, but we've been to both. Why not Cali? Because I think my parents are afraid of flying although they won't admit to it. But, now I've got questions to ask of you guys.. I'm hoping to convince my parents to go sometime next year, in 2008. However, before I present the proposition to them, I want some core facts on dates, costs, and a good overall vacation…

So my aunt came over for Christmas as always, but she wasn't sure she was going to make it on Christmas Eve, as her Subaru Outback wouldn't start, but finally turned over after an hour's delay. She drove it here and it made it, and then it started fine on Christmas and the day after, when we took it to the dealer's service department. While it was in service being looked at, we went out looking. First up was the CR-V. For some reason she thinks their cute, and I guess we all have our own opinions. She thought it was what she really wanted, and had high hopes. She picked out one she liked (sticker was $28.5k) and we were on our way. We both thought it was terrible. Harsh…

Hello and welcome back to In Retrospect. After a breif hiatus, IR is back and will be brought to you monthly in The Lounge. Future issues will/may hold more content. This month we ask one question: Why didn't they build that? *** The car that should have been built was a concept by GM -- Nineteen-Ninety-Five's Buick XP2000. These images taken by avant1963: Why didn't GM build it? The platform would've made a great replacement for both the W-Body and B-Body cars; the styling was near timeless and well-done; the packaging was a flawless idea. (They can keep the Automated Highway Sytem, though.) Why didn't they built it? Guess you can chalk it up to the bea…

When very little I really liked matchbox or dinkie toys and really got stoked when they had a trailer hitch with something to pull. I had a favorite car and camper trailer. But my dream toy was always a pedal car and never got one. We lived in the mountians and nothing but gravel, really slowed them down. I would have been in Nirvana with this:

Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the impact the man had on music and what he was attempting to do, but Bob Dylan could not: a.) sing, b.) play guitar, c.) play harmonica, or d.) write consistently good lyrics (which are as deep as a supermodel is shallow). If the local classic rock station plays "Like A Rolling Stone" one more time, I'm going to shove Bob's harmonica down his neck.

I know that I'm normally not one to go and post things that would likely turn someone's stomach, but I've got to say this one. On the drive home this afternoon I was witness to an accident. This was a pretty bad one, Peterbilt 379 vs new Mustang. I've had basic first-responder training, and it happened about 30 seconds before I really arrived on scene but it was still bad. Looks like the Mustang ran the light, or was the last car in the line to turn and thought she could make it, but either way you slice it, 80,000-lb Pete doing 55mph through the green broadside into a new 'stang isn't going to be just a fender patch and move on. The truck driver was pretty badly fra…

So my familt and I went to mass today...I'm not really religious for various reasons, but my mom insisted so we went (this includes my girlfriend). Partway through the mass the priest asked everyone to raise their had and repeat what he said (I forget the words), but this is exactly what it looked like: My girlfriend said that honestly scared her...and when you thin about it it is kinda freaky...it's like a cult...a really big one. Ain't religion great? (not really, but it can be entertaining).

Hello All, We'll my coworker Chris has been all about Toyota, He bought a Prius and then when the Highlander came out in Hybrid form, he bought it. Now Chris while over all happy with his auto's was a bit disappointed in the milage out of his Highlander, he actually figured it would be just like his Prius. But unlike me and my Suburban, he has allways taunted me as a destroyer of the enviornment here in Seattle and how much better he was for having his hybrids. Now Electrical hell is starting to haunt him. His Highlander has almost 20K miles on it and it seems to always be going into the shop for little repairs. But the big story is what you all want to hear. H…
