Anyone here with interesting names for their computers..i.e. other than the IP address, giving it a hostname? It's kind of a computer geek thing, I think...friends of mine name their computers after things like sci fi characters, Star Trek characters, places in the Lord of the Rings movies, etc... when I set up my current home network about 5 years ago I went the naming scheme of vintage GM car names that end in 'A'... as I've added computers, I've added names... my network now consists of Ventura, Catalina, Electra, Invicta, Impala, and Omega.

Summer is upon us once again and many of us can bid school "f@#k off" for a few months. This summer I'd like to do things... For the Intrepid: New wheels and tires, of the 18" variety Brake upgrade (at least to what the top models had) Get the small rust spot repaired Get the small dents out Possibly get a brushed-aluminum dash kit for the center console and trim Possibly get aluminum pedals Mod the engine some (although I'm not sure what to mod) Replace the light bulbs behind the gauges If the timing chain hasn't been replaced as per its scheduled replacement, have it replaced (have to call the previous dealer which it was serviced). WOW! I happened to be working on something else and got around to some web-surfing because my "leadership ethics" chapters get boring every once in a while. Somehow, I got onto the Presidential electiong prognostications. In a nutshell, nobody that I consider to be fairly conventional is in a front runner position. This leaves me perplexed. On the Democratic side, Hillary is a obviously a woman and Obama is obviously of mixed race. Not only that, there are so many other contenders that no one knows how their pie will be split up. On the Republican side, Giuliani has had an interesting personal life in terms of number of marriages and Romney from Mass. is Mormon, wh…

Here's one of mine, the Citroen SM. 3.0l V6 from the Merek, Citroen innovation, and a bit of American panache. Features include swiviling, self-leveling headlamps with glass shielding, self-centering power steering, rainsensing wipers, and the famous hydropneumatic suspension system which delivered a composed but oh-so smooth ride over any terrain. As some regular Top Gear viewers know, Citroens were notably used as camera cars due to ability to glide over rough surfaces. Some Citroens can even reportedly be driven on three wheels thanks to this suspension setup. Just under 13,000 were built, about 2,400 of which were exported to America. When I was about four o…

All of you know I am on the prowl for another whip for my son to drive and another toy I will enjoy and drive in addition to my SLE. My daughter who will be sixteen will then get the Chevy. The wife most of time drives the SUV. So I was looking at 98-02 Firebirds for some reason and started looking at prices! 3800 V6 powered models with low milage under 50K in great shape are only about 7-8K if you find a deal. I am wondering what you guys would think of one of these as an additional car. No doubt my son would love anything RWD (dounts and juicy burnouts) and those Firebirds with the V6 and sport package including twin tips out back are very attractive. I am wondering are…

Bettie Page So sad that she passed. A lot of people thought she was already dead, since she basically fell off the map in '58. She was a revolutionary, helped fire up the sexual revolution and gave women the courage to explore their sexuality. Amazing lady and we owe her a lot.

Sheez, I would have liked to have a photo upon starting this month's car spotting thread, but I was driving on the freeway a ways behind it. I saw a '95 or '96 Buick Riviera in a candy apple red metallic color which may have been an extra cost color that year. There's nothing really off the charts about such a sighting except that you don't see them that often, it was in excellent condition, and, from the rear, and rear 3/4, views, the strong fender flanks and the almost oval shape of the slightly inset rear fascia and tail lamp assembly make a pretty strong (and good) statement. (I am definitely not a fan of what I call its preying mantis front end.)

In a heartfelt gesture, Mayor Bloombeg & the City of New York paid handsome tribute to General Motors, thanking them for their $10 Million spent (plus a fleet of support vehicles) in NYC & WDC immediately after the 9/11 attacks, by purchasing 40 hybrid sedans for use as both marked & unmarked police cars. "These new patrol cars will help fulfill the PlaNYC goal of reducing City government's carbon footprint," said Mayor Bloomberg. "We want to get the most mileage out of technology where it makes sense & with the addition of these hybrids, we're doing that literally," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. Though the just over $1M spent on the hybrids d…

Come Sunday, June 21st, the annual Laurel Festival comes to a close. As with every year, it ends with the car show and cruise at 12 pm. Starting last year, Dr. Steven Greenburg of Brookville opens his collection of Cadillacs to the public after the car show at 4 pm. It contains everything from early '30s Caddies up to a roster of recent Caddies, totaling up to at least 3 dozen vehicles. I went last year and took many pictures, but lost them to computer issues before I could upload them. If anyone is interested in coming, I'll be available to show you to the complex they will be located at. Admission is free and he invites fellow Cadillac owners to bring their own fo…

HAHA, how do you like that topic title? I have been checking out 1st gen Cadillac CTS's lately, and I have noticed a little square on the rear bumper (about 2" by 2"), and I was wondering if anyone knew what that was. I have seen them on several different cars lately and was just curious. It is not a rear parking assist sensor. I am going to attach this pic that I found on the internet, but I"m not sure if I'm legally allowed to. I guess if my computer does blow up on me, I"m good!? It is on the right side of the bumper, just above the exhaust pipe. It really doesn't matter to me, but I see them all the time and have always wondered what they are. While we are t…

so how does everyone here drive? I find there is quite a few styles i notice on the road.. there is agressive (taking everything fast, and easily angered) then there is normal (this doesnt need to be explained) then there is conservative (overly-cautious, slows down if someone is merging into the lane next to them etc) then there is 'boy racer' (people in thier civics and stuff basically driving in neutral and revving the engine and treating each red light like they were at a drag strop..with a slow ass car ) then we've got our blue haired friends.. I know there is more that I cant think of.. so what kind of driver are you? I find i'm usually norm…

It's sometimes ironic what will trigger a memory. On Halloween, I went with my sister, nephew and friends to watch the kids trick or treat. One of the houses we visited was the one in which my grandparents lived during their "retirement years". Standing in front of it, I "flashed back" to scenes from Halloweens long ago of my sister, our cousins and me as kids eager to show Gram and Gramps our costumes ... and, of course, to get candy. As we walked away from the house and walked past the driveway and the telephone poll that damaged my 1981 Monte Carlo Sport Coupe, I caught a glimpse of the garage behind the house ... and almost immediately flashed back to a few "uncoo…

Probably an old joke, but I came across this while reading jokes about engineers. -- The Pontiac that was Allergic to Vanilla Ice Cream For the engineers among us who understand that the obvious is not always the solution, and that the facts, no matter how implausible, are still the facts ... A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors: "This is the second time I have written you, and I don't blame youfor not answering me, because I kind of sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of ice cream for dessert after dinner each night. So I took a trip to visit a couple of my friends who live 85 miles from where I am. Ended up taking the Civic, which my brother drives, because I don't trust the '95 LSS on the highway for that long, and I figured I'd save quite a bit of gas... On the way there I went 80-85 most of the time with a group of cars. The tank wasn't full to begin with and the Civic does not have a mileage calculator onboard, so I have no idea what mileage I got on the way there. However, on the way back I filled up about a mile from the interstate, set the cruise to 61mph (I decided I should cruise at 2000rpm, don't know why I thought that was a good number to pick, just did). I was by myself…

Scientists Harvest Stem Cells Without Destroying Embryo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Breakthrough technique might get around moral issues, experts say By Amanda Gardner, HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, Aug. 23 (HealthDay News) -- In what could prove to be a medical milestone, researchers have succeeded in generating new lines of human embryonic stem cells without destroying the embryo. The breakthrough may enable scientists to circumvent the ban on federal funding of stem cell research, paving the way for gains in treating or curing diseases such as diabetes, spinal injury and Alzheimer's disease. ...In Lisbon to be exact. So I am driving my new Megane GT Line wagon (purchased June 2012) home after I stopped by the mall to buy a new TV and all of a sudden I distract myself with the radio screen for half a second... When I look ahead, I see a car stopped at a crosswalk. I hit the brakes hard, but since the road was very very slippery due to the 1st real rainfall after the Summer, the car slides and hits the car in front at between 30KPH and 40KPH... No injuries (thankfully!) and the car is running well, but from what I checked in my garage when I got home the repair will include a new front bumper (the fron parking sensors went nuts), new right front headlight uni…

So, last Wednesday I check my personal email in the late morning and find this message waiting for me: Now I have purchased several items from the GMC Collection web site over the past couple of years (http://www.gmccollection.com/) and follow them on Facebook for updates, to ask inquiries, and to give my suggestions for items I'd like to purchase. I recently inquired about the availability of holiday ornaments, which they offered in 2010 (missed) and 2011 (got both) [note: there will be none this year]. I guess as a result of that latest round of questioning I received the email above. So fast forward to Saturday's mail delivery. This is what I retrieved out of th…

After being thoroghly discouraged from that path, and for good reason I have found emplyoment as a bartender at McFadden's bar in NYC. If anybody for Cheers and gears wnats to show up the nights that I am bartending I'll give lot's of buybacks and freebees. Right now I'm a 'reoccuring guest bartender' and am trying to become regular staff so it's really important that I bring bodies into the place. If anyone is interested I'll post w2hen I find out my schedule.

Along with the "What Would You Buy Instead?" threads, I thought I'd bring this one back, too. Today we're focusing on two of the greatest cars to ever wear the famed Prancing Horse badge, but from two very different times. The two cars themselves are also very different, but have some glaring similarities. Both cars use small displacement turbocharged V8's mounted midship, both deliver(ed) stunning performance in their day, but they hail from different eras, and are obvious products of such. So, would you rather have..... Ferrari F40 or 488 GTB Remember, you cannot pick a different …

Good acts are hard to follow. Especially in the auto business. Maybe more so in the auto business, actually. The steady march of technology is sometimes nullified by more stringent regulations, falling profits, a change in focus, and sometimes just as a result of straight up flubbing it. So with that in mind, I ask you what your dream garage would look like if you were only able to use today's cars' immediate predecessors. The rules- 1) Production models only. 2) These are your only vehicles. 3) Maximum of 5 choices. 4) Any variation of that previous model is allowed, even if the exact trim was not offered again. 5) Your choice …

Gentlemen; I will be going on a self imposed exile from C and G for 3 or 4 months, this time for real. No one here has done anything wrong, but I want you all to know what I am doing, as I consider everyone here pretty much a friend and someone I respect. Back in the days before people all pussied out and bought vans and box vans and trailers to transport their work equipment, REAL men and women drove panel trucks or sedan deliveries to get the job done. Please share! I would probably step over my own mother to have a 1948-1953 Chevrolet or GMC one-ton panel like this one, only mine would ideally be a work-worn original. Not really a fan of the 1954 models because of the one year only ugly grille (at least on the Chevrolet) and the one year only one-piece windshield (I like the split windshield- makes the truck look that much older). A 1955-1959 model would be awesome too, and OF COURSE a pre-1948 model would be accep…

The Encore's time with us is nearing its end. It needs tires, brakes, and possibly a master cylinder. When I was under it last weekend installing new LED headlights and fog lamps I noticed oil coating the oil pan and the coolant reservoir tank was nearly empty. We've had a coolant leak issue before when the thermostat housing cracked. It's not exhibiting any symptoms currently beside the tank being low... but it lit up my radar. Carvana is offering $8,200 in trade for a 2013 Encore with 101k miles... so I think I'd be dumb not to take that offer up before I have to sink $1,200+ dollars into it. That's the trap we got caught in with the CR-V, we kept sinking mone…

We had to put our oldest cat, Rose to sleep last night. She's not been well for some time, but it got a lot worse yesterday morning. We decided that it was best to euthanize her to end her pain and suffering. We made an appointment for Monday morning. However when I was getting ready to go to bed last night at 2 or so, I noticed she was in her pet hut with her eyes open with a dead stare, not moving at all. It was painful to watch. We had to find an emergency center that was actually open. We took her their at 3am and they put her to sleep. I don't thinks he would have made it through the night. It sucks, our pets are family to us. At least she's not suffering …

Yup OK I've backed off lately going to the gym and I've reverted to walking my old route in the a.m., but I have a serious problem. Spiderwebs. I just hate it when I'm trucking along in my sneakers and *KABLAMMO* I walk into a single strand (or several) of those pesky tiny restraints, face-first, then I thrash around, clutching at them with my hands, trying to clear my path. If anyone's peeking out their window they must think I'm bat$h! crazy. Am I the only one this happens to?

So, I found some back up CD's from 2006. They contain a bunch of cool stuff from C&G past, as well as stuff from all over the internets. Most of this has been lost in the sands of time, so I think I will share some here. First up, is a repost from the "New GM" thread... Here is the Pontiac G6 we were supposed to get, before Bob Lutz had them simplify it! These pics come from the actual production G6 launch brochure: I made this image for C&G in '06 to show the pre-Lutz cues on the car we got: Here is a scan from GM Design showing the theme they were working on for the GMX295 program, aka 2004 Cadillac Seville. Bob Lutz ordered this car redone…

So I'm coming back from the mines last night at 1h30 in the morning. I press open the garage door opener, turn the car into the garage, think "this is gonna be tight" (the car is not the MINI but an old VW Passat company car) and suddenly this scratching sound....... rear left fender scratched at the wheel well area... an expensive trip this will be, and what pisses me off is that it's the same f@#king turn I do every single day when I get home...

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Space shuttle Atlantis thundered away on its final voyage to orbit Friday, hoisting an experienced crew of six and a full shipment of space station gear. Atlantis sped through a perfectly clear afternoon sky, blazing a trail over the Atlantic before huge crowds eager to catch one of the few remaining shuttle launches. Its destination is the International Space Station, which was soaring over the South Pacific at the time of liftoff. The shuttle should catch up with the orbiting complex and its six residents Sunday. More than 40,000 guests — the biggest launch-day crowd in years — descended on the Kennedy Space Center, all of them eager to witness…

Summer's coming/here, and inevitably, I have received my annual fyreworks catalog in the mail, despite (& in spite ??) of the disclaimer that NJ & DE residents cannot buy, transport, possess or operate fyreworks without a permit. Many years ago, a temporary co-worker got me a great grab-bag of fun, and about 4 years ago, a brief-cased sized box of them --that survived a to-the-ground building fire (they were in the walk-in safe)-- likewise provided more fun. I'd really like to get some more, and the catalog is SO enticing. Pyro-Impact, Big Bomb Jumbo Cracker, Red, White & Boom... sigh! Anyway, there's a few fyrewerks stores in PA, one in Easton.... any of y…

The manual column shift thread made me think of this... I know a number of people my age (almost 40) and younger that have never driven a vehicle w/ a manual. I learned to drive w/ them, and drove Ford products w/ manuals most of the time for 14 years before getting my first automatic at age 30.

Too understand my mother is to know this: She is easily swayed off one persons opinion and once she hears the first one thats the one she adopts. Car shopping in this point: My sister is an import loving snob and has a Nissan Altima. Because of this she has put the idea in my mothers head that all American cars are junk. Yet every domestic we have ever owned has never left us on the side of the road at all. My sister cannot say the same for her previous Mitsubishi or her wonderful Nissan which has stranded her twice. Because my mother now has heard "get a Nissan" thats all she wants to look at. My father has been taking her car shopping and he himself has looked a…

It's frustrating that one's available time (namely vacation) will not support the hopes/plans for vacations and road trips. Given I hope to have a new job soon, my "vacation" time may be even more limited.... Even so, vacation is important ... to have fun, meet people, see friends/family & relax. For whatever reason, I'm not as "organized" in getting plans together for 2006 as I have been the last couple years. Heck, I haven't even started gathering a list of the IL/IN/WI/IA/MI area car shows/events & non-car related gatherings/events I may attend.... However, I have some tentative plans, including (but hopefully not limited to).... June 22-26 Nashville/Jac…

If, in your life, there is ever a time when you are in a hurry, in the second story of a house with old, worn out carpet on the stairs, and you feel the need to apply your haste to the speed that you walk down the stairs... don't. Pace yourself and be careful. Otherwise, you may slip and fall. Then, you'd end up with a sore ass, right leg, left arm, and chest. It won't be pleasant. I'm warning you, it won't. You may shake it off, shortly after it happens as you get up and continue doing what you were doing, but the pain/soreness will increase as time goes on. As you wake up the next day, you will wish you had not been in such a hurry for such a silly reason. You say "I ca…

1998 Camaro for those of you not in the know. 3.8L "3800 Series II." Automatic Transmission. Every piece of the motor is apart from the other, after a major knocking noise started to occur. This is what we've found: A few worn main bearings A few worn rod bearings One completely torn up rod bearing (looks like a rodent got to it or something) A couple scratched/scarred pistons and connecting rods because of the bearings The "bearing" (or whatever it's called) on the crankshaft for Cylinder One is worn almost flush with the ridge that's supposed to be there The thing that sucks the oil up is totally full of metal shavings and garbage And this is only after 55,000 miles.…

Who saw it? I did. Visually, not as appealing as X3 or Batman Begins. Plotwise, not as good as Batman but on-par with (or slightly better than) X3's. Acting, about asgood as the other two. I think it may have been a bit too long as well. Overall, I'd give it a B+. It would find a place in my DVD collection.

If anyone who is in the Seattle area or reasonably close to it is looking for something to do this coming Sunday, the 16th, there will be an All Camaro & Chevy Show at the XXX-Drive In in Issaquah. The show is free for spectators, if anyone wants to enter, it is $15 for day of show entries. My car club is putting this show on and its always been a lot of fun. We tend to have just about everything Chevy, from the 1930's to brand new. Just click on the following link for more information or ask me and I can answer about anything. All Camaro & Chevy Show The show starts at 8AM and runs all day. Scott Settlemire is flying in and he has hinted at some cool cars he…
