My pics of what I no longer see on the road: 1. Buick Riviera. Yeah, I know I'm the small car fan here at C&G but for some reason I've always lusted after the Riv. Almost bought a silver 65 with dual 4v carbs when I bought the 66 Mustang fastback. Used to be several running around my old home town. I also miss the later 60's design and the sweet 70's boat tail design. Actually, I seldom see the sleek 90's version on the road either. 2. Olds Cutlass Vista Cruiser. When we were talking about the what year thing I thought about how many of these there were running around when I was a kid. Still lust after them, and if I could have GM build me anything from …

http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?arti...281474977067637 Got that in an e-mail this morning. How would we go about disproving a few of the broad, sweeping statements made; particularly the ones where American car manufacturers can't handle costs, blah blah blah. You can tell people facts all day long but they just jump up and down and point to back issues of Consumer Reports, so I need hard facts in black & white (newspaper articles, etc.) to forward this back to all the people it's gone to.

While watching a new show on speed called pass time (which is very good) i have been introduced to a new form of drag racing. There have been a few electric cars come on the show. One was an electric powered s10 and the other was a pro comp rail style dragster with no less than 450 batteries and an electric motor that was the equivalent of 31 ci. Now being the big fan of big block power houses i am i totally underestimated these cars even though i am aware of an electric car on tv that i saw called "white Zombie" which consistently runs 11.5's. the pro comp style electric drag car ran if i recall correctly right at 9 maybe an 8.80. low and behold here are a few clips from…

My Acadia has the power tailgate, which I love for when I have three 150+ lbs dogs on leashes and need to load them into the back. Today, I was arranging boxes of stuff in the rear cargo area with the tailgate open. My daughter had the other set of keys and thought it would be funny to close the tailgate on dear old Dad. I was listening to my iPod at the time and did not hear the audible warning that the tailgate was closing. I only realized it was closing when I felt it hit by rear end, stop, and then raise back up. Thank goodness for that safety feature, or I would have been gobbled up like one of those little balls in a Hungry Hungry Hippos mouth. Let the prank …

...To no longer being annoyed by the Beast. I joined a credit union yesterday. Now it's just a matter of finding a vehicle I like... perhaps the hardest part of all. I started looking for cars over two months ago and I've really only found two I thought were worth purchasing. They both didn't last very long before they were sold. Otherwise, I can't seem to find anything that I could realistically see myself driving. Most of the time, there's just something about each vehicle that puts me off. Generally, something like price, mileage, transmission (I really don't want another automatic), condition, or desirability (there has to be some appeal to it). I can't find a good…

Dang it. I am holding for a online chat with the customer support people for the server of my Camaro Club's website. Our forum is messed up and I know I didn't do it. I got ahold of someone and he was trying to research the problem and got cut off. Now I am on hold again. I would really like to get that thing fixed and then maybe get some rest. I've been up since 6PM last night. Does this kind of thing drive anyone else nuts?

The wife anad I are currently reviewing our financial status and trying to decide what is the amount we are comfortable paying per month for a new vehicle when the Envoy lease expires soon (August). Of course small and cheap would be best (a loan amount not exceeding $20K), but there isn't much out there she likes at that loan amount (she really wants a 2008 Enclave, CTS, S40/V50, or a VUE, just so you know). We don't have a large enough down payment, so even looking at a $23-$24K MSRP would be stretching it. She's not fond of the Malibu ( ), so don't suggest that, and we already are leasing an AURA, so that's out of the question. Anyway, as we were talking yester…

^^^ That is a line from a recent Brad Paisley song, 'Letter To Me'. I could quote a bunch of other songs, since it is a theme that runs through many songs (country and rock and otherwise) and writings.... BUT, as I was listening to that Brad Paisley song the other day, it reminded me that the idea of "better days" and "the best years of one's life" have always made me wonder. Maybe I've never really understood the concept or the human nature of labeling what the "best years" or "better days" are, but it just seems to me that one can't really determine what those are ... until one's life has ended. Sure, you can look back and say, 'Oh, those were better days' or 'Tho…

I am looking at getting myself some cheap wheels for spring/summer. Maximum price of $3000 CAD I would really like an Achieva (1994 or 1995 is my preference). I found an ad on Saturday for a 1994 Achieva S sedan with 160,000 Kilometers for $2200. Called, and a lady told me she had bought a Corolla, and wants to get rid of the Olds pronto. I asked over the phone if its a V6 or 4, but she said she didnt know, she would have to look in the manual (haha women driver). I came to look at it on Sunday, and was mildly dissapointed. It is a rock bottom base model. It has the 2.3 OHV I4, 3 speed auto, 14inch wheelcovers, and crank windows. The best part was, it is …

So I was arguing with some idiot who has no comprehension of marketing products to different markets (background: I'm a psych/marketing major) and whilst explaining to him that the Camaro can appeal to more diverse young people, I typed in the fact I am a liberal gay 21 year old who lives 5,000 miles from Detroit. Did you know that the word gay is automatically blurred on GM Inside News Forums for being inappropriate!? Along with every other bad four letter word I can think of, that of all things is placed on the list of words that can't be seen... Did I miss something or am I justified in being a little peeved???

So I was thinking earlier and came up with a ton of questions about battery-powered and hybrid, non-ICE vehicles... 1. Can they haul like our diesels? Can they off-road? 2. How would you "mod" one? Add some RAM like a computer? Obviously not, but who knows... 3. When they become widespread, will they be able to power the planes that you fly from here to Europe? 4. Will they be able to be used in the water, ATV, and very cold conditions (not only in cars way up north, but also snowmobiles and the like)? 5. Of course they'll be more expensive at first, but after technology gets going, will they be cheaper than mass-produced ICEs? 6. What will happen to gas stati…

Reuters March 17, 2008 - 6:25 am ET NEW DELHI (Reuters) -- General Motors wants to launch a second small car in India in the next two years as it looks to capitalize on growth in emerging markets to offset any sluggishness in U.S. sales, a senior company official said. The model will not compete directly with Tata Motors' low-cost Nano but will be cheaper than GM's current lowest priced car in India, David Reilly, GM group vice-president, told a news conference on Monday. Small cars less make up nearly three-quarters of India's market. GM offers the Chevrolet Spark in the sector for about 300,000 rupees ($7,350). "We need some thing lower than what we have got…

Visions of things to come in North America? Lawrence J. Speer Automotive News Europe March 17, 2008 06:01 CET PARIS -- CO2 taxes are convincing car buyers across Europe to shift from mid-size and larger vehicles to smaller models with lower emission levels. Industry experts predict the shift will accelerate over the coming years, as most EU member states enact emission-oriented tax regimes to fight climate change. " The market is changing, and we feel the market will continue changing," said Patrick Blain, Renault's executive vice president of sales and marketing. Fourteen of the EU's 27 member states currently tax vehicles based on CO2 emissions, fuel con…

Stopped by the dealer, for the first time in a LONG time (Saturn, Pontiac, Buick, GMC, Chevrolet, Cadillac) to get my first good look at an Astra. I like the 3 door quite a bit, but I'm not floored by it like I thought I would be. The 5 door is just down right bland IMO. It seems that the americans can take Opel designs and put the "final touch" on the theme to make it look awesome. For example, both the Sky and the Outlook are MUCH more striking and impressive to look at and even the Aura radiates a certain elegance that the Astra only dreams of and the Vue looks better made and more substantial eventhough I'm not a huge fan of the design. This scares me, because a…

By JAMES STANFORD 16 March 2008 GM HOLDEN has confirmed it will export its new Ute and a new high-performance version of the G8 sedan to the US. GMH chairman and managing director Mark Reuss also vowed to further extend the company’s export portfolio when he announced the deal at Fishermens Bend this morning. The Ute will be sold as a Pontiac G8 "sport truck" variant, although its actual title is yet to be decided. Pontiac will ask the public to come up with an apt title for the car-based ute. The Pontiac ute, which was styled by Holden designers in Australia, picks up a similar front-end to the G8 sedan. It will presented in the US for the first time at the New…

So, a '03 Tahoe pulls onto the lot yesterday. A nice couple gets out, wanders around the show room. I greet them. They've had the truck for a year, they say, and their salesperson (whom they readily admit they don't like) told them that after a year or so they should be able to trade the truck in. Worst Car Showcase Presents: The Chevrolet Vega The Vega could quite possibly be one of GM's worst efforts in the sub-compact car market in the history of the company. When GM and Chevrolet introduced the Vega models, which were a coupe (Hatchback), a sedan (Notchback), a two-door station wagon (Kammback), and a sedan delivery (Panel Express), all the way back in 1971, it was their poorly concerted answer to Volkswagen ass-engined Beetle, Ford's cheeky pint-sized rolling fireball, known as the Pinto, as well as the torrent of bland and dreary econo-boxes being shipped over from Japan by the bushel full. This past week, I found myself in "defensive driving" situations ... one worked out very well, the other almost ended not so well.... The first, the one that almost ended up badly, happened en route to work. I was on a 4-lane road in Schaumburg in the right-hand lane, which was full of cars waiting to turn right (myself included). We were moving, but not at the speed limit. I noticed that the car behind me darted into the left-hand lane, but thought nothing of it, because I thought the driver was going to be turning left at the upcoming intersection. I was wrong. Instead, the driver apparently realized I was going slow because of the line in front of me. Before I …

Whenever I hear that old chestnut describing a GMC pickup, I take it as a reference to a trusted friend, and I was glad to have my Sierra in the last few days. Sunday, my seven-year old wash machine quit with a tub full of soapy water. After going online and then checking everything I could think of, I decided it was time to head to Lowe's and buy a new washer and dryer (coincidentally, my mom's dryer quit at the same time). So off I went. I felt very good, being able to carry my new stuff home without depending on others. The hard part was getting the washer into the laundry room by myself (I ended up wheeling it in on my creeper, and boy was I sore the next day), b…

NEW YORK - The cost of filling up the family car climbed to a record high Tuesday, adding to the challenges consumers already face with falling home values and rising food prices. Gas prices at the pump rose overnight to a record national average of $3.2272 a gallon, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. That’s a tad higher than the previous record of $3.2265, set last May. Soaring gas prices worsen the financial plight of consumers already suffering through a downturn in the housing market that has sharply reduced home prices in many markets and limited Americans’ ability to tap home equity for spending. Food prices are also on the rise, partly due …

This isn't some "GM Death Watch" thread. This is industry-wide. Who do you think the next brand or company will be to leave the US market? There's been serious talk about Mitsu leaving, occasional talk about VW leaving, though I haven't had that impression myself. Then of course there's the occasional clamor for axing a GM brand. Isuzu is gone (practically has been for a while, though). So, who's next to leave the US market or shut down?

All right, so before I ask my question, I would like to point out that I am not "technically inclined" when it comes to cars. I know where vital fluids go and how to change them, but that is the extent of it. So, I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to most things. I was thinking about this on my drive home from work. I drive a car with a column-mounted shifter. Where exactly is the gearbox? Is it in the same place as a car with a floor-mounted shifter? Or in a different place? How does the gearbox know to disengage park for instance in either form? I honestly want to know, and you know, become a little more educated about the car I drive. [/noob]

On CNN Europe they just reported that the cost at the pump will rise 30 cents a gallon in the USA, in the next 30 days. What are you paying at the pump there now, for regular and premium?

What are the US regulations regarding the size and placement of marker lights? Many Euro cars have front side markers high and to the rear of the front fenders, do they have to add something in the front to meet regs? I'm wondering how flexible the design parameters can be for these lights in the US market.

OK, I'm going to open up a big can of worms, but hey it's part of my charm, plus I have a big can opener. :AH-HA_wink: Would you support GM moving it's Global Headquarters to another region and out of North America, say to either GM Eruope's headquarters or GM Asia-Pacific's headquarters, this would help in taking away GM's stigma of being an American auto maker and truly make it a global company. This would be something akin to what Oldsmobile did, when it didn't put Oldsmobile on it's products. GM would be saying we are a Global company, by taking GM out of North America, so to speak. So what are your thoughts on it, would you support such a move?

With the mention of the gatherings in various parts of the US, I started wondering if anyone here was thinking about going to Hot August Nights, and would be interested in using that show as a meeting event. The show dates are August 2 - 10. To me HAN has to be one of the best shows ever. All of the entries are 1972 and older American and European cars and trucks. Panther would probably have to be restrained. (j/k) This years entry limit is 5500 and if anyone thinks that is all that will be down there, they are nuts. It's one show where you have to put aside at least some of your prejudice for the car you own, simply because there is way too much you will miss unless …

"My" new Smart Passion: $14,620. White/black with tan interior, premium sound system, foglamps, power steering, clock and tachometer. Can "comical" also be "smart"? I saw my second Smart locally on the street yesterday, yellow with black frame, driven by an uber-nerdy guy with glasses. What's going on here? Is it hip to be square?

My daughter will start driving this year and going off to some university in two years. Mrs. PCS is starting to have empty nest issues and keeps whispering in my ear it's not to late to have one more. She is hard to resist once she has her mind set on something. I'm 38 so I would be 56 by the time the next one would be going off to college. So I guess my question is are there any older dads out there and if there are, looking back would you have had another child again, knowing what you know now? If you want to PM me your answer, that's cool too.

That's it, I'm done...... :AH-HA_wink: Yep, Actually found a Toyota that I liked....and the wife wants one pretty bad. I hear a replacement for the Cavvie Sedan (or the Cobalt, if it doesn't stop pissing me off..) I went the the local dealership, and test drove a 2009....... Vibe You can stop worrying now.... Anyways, this little car surprised me. I wasn't expecting much, as the last gen was so-so. The local dealership got their first 1.8 auto one in....a nice gray....My random comments: - Holy cow-this thing has a buttload of cuploaders! Add a keg, and you could have a party in there! The usual ones up front, ones that…

All of the sudden I am having tons of trouble viewing certain websites. Unfortunately, one of them is CZ28.com - a site I really enjoy. It seems like only those sites with offsite linked ads are giving me trouble, especially "ads by Google". CZ28 has been one of the most reliable sites I've ever been on until now. This change came at me "out of the blue" and I can't figure out what the trouble is. Pages can literally take minutes to load if these ads are present, but other pages of the same site without ads seem fine. WTF?

So it's about 4:45 this afternoon. I have work at 5 but we need to pick the Prizm up from the shop, we finally had the front tires replaced and front end alignment done. We turn off onto the main road (110). She's driving the Intrepid. We come to the left turn we need to take to get to the shop. This road, despite being fairly heavily used, is not particularly wide. There's a school bus at the end of the road wanted to turn right, and there's not enough room for us to get past, so she has her turn signal on and waits for someone to let us all go. After a minute someone flashes us to so that the bus can turn and we can go. As this is about to happen 2 cars from behind us g…

Just after Christmas Tammy started telling me that she was concerned about me driving the Vette with the roads getting icy. Since it was winter break, she wasn't using our truck (she works for a school district) so I was driving it to work and back. But, with school starting up again she didn't want me in the Vette on our roads. Too many, nutcases who can't drive is what she SAID she was concerned about. All of our cars were RWD and with 3 of them being show cars and one of them having an engine being rebuilt for drag racing, they were out. I leave for work at 11PM and come home at either 8 or 9 AM so I get 2 chances for icy roads. That left the Vette, our truck, and …

I bought my Duramax Silverado late in 04 (2005 model) and diesel was 1.99/ gal. This morning I paid 4.16/gal. This is criminal. Diesel costs less to produce than gasoline and now top it dramatically in price. Someone is getting fat, and ripping us off bigtime.

My idea of Good may be different than your idea of good. the US ideal of "good" is likely different than that of a communist state. So what makes good, good? who is to say that either of us are right? maybe we are both right, but then if we are both right then there is no "right" answer meaning we can never improve society because ethics is relative. whats your ideas? ::edit:: for the purposes of this thread don't list anything from the Bible of "proof" of good, feel free to argue the same points as those from the bible, but you will need to come up with another way to argue them. citing the bible just tends to devolve into some flaming thread.

One option I am pondering for when my 500 lease is up this fall is to find a dirt cheap used ford freestar to drive for 2 years or so. generally, i like my vehicles to have a full center console with armrest. I do not like the narrow fold down armrests off the seats that vans typically have. the interior of many ford products has the same kind of look and plastics. i was debating if a guy could do a hack job on say, a center console from a junked 500 or say migrate the rear console of a freestyle or expedition or something into working between the front seats of the freestar? obviously developing a solid mounting system and trying to determine the proper height …

I have a friend who had surgery on his shoulder recently. He won't be able to work for 8 weeks while he recuperates. This week, he's supposed to do as little as possible, so I got an idear to get him some reading material to help him pass the time. He's pretty heavy into sport compact cars. Real hot ones, not 25hp Type-R sticker hot, but turbo AWD hot. We have a little back-and-forth at times between the Corvette and the sport compacts. Anyway, I stopped at the VW dealership seeking a brochure on the R32, telling the attendant my story of a friend with nothing to do but recuperate. They were very nice, but told me no brochure was available for the R32. They gave…

My Senior Studio project this semester is to design a car that takes form an function to a new level in a midsize sedan shape that isn't boring. Kinda vague I know, but to elaborate a bit, I was told by the instructor I could do this, so long as I made it "interesting" to the non-car artsy staff who will be judging the project. So my concept is to use famous figures of the past and create innovations that they would find useful in a car if they existed, but more importantly would be useful today. Anyway, the midterm review is coming up, and though I have a lot done, I still need a company name and a car name. It's a 4-door rear-drive hatch (think Mazda6 hatch), RWD with…

So....if you are straight....have you ever felt an attraction to another guy? Doesn't HAVE to be sexual....can be a strong emotional attraction....or sexual...whatever. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to "be with" a guy? And if you are gay.....have you ever had the same feelings for a woman? When I was in high school, before I came to terms with being gay, I had a girlfriend. Now we never had sex because she was absolutely sure she wanted to remain a virgin until she was married. We dated, went out, and the most we "did" was kiss goodnight at the end of the evening. Funny thing is....I never desired having sex with her.....mostly (unknown to me at th…

SO i was browsing through Volvo's website lookin at that cool new C30... well i decided to look at the S40... the 2.4L I5 NA engine that it has in it makes the EXACT SAME power as my nearly old 2.4L I5 NA engine. Now THATS PROGRESS! 10 years later its the same exact engine. The only difference is that the S40 gets a bit better mileage than my car, and im assuming thats because the S40 is smaller/lighter and has a 5spd hooked up to it instead of my 4spd.

In the article about "automaker scorecards" or whatever, they say in it that Toyota overtook GM as the world's largest automaker this year. I thought that it was determined that GM sold more? Besides, it was so close that tie goes to the 80 year champ right?

I know that there's a general agreement against political talk, but seeing as there's only 4 forum members from Alberta, of which two are largely active; and of those two, one still lives there... I Hope that this is appropriate to post. When you think of the political dynasties of parties that have ruled forever, you probably think about China's Communist Party, or Perhaps Sweden's Social Democratic Party... Well you can add another party to that list... That's right, American buddies, the Cartel Canadian province that your country gets half its oil from, has been ruled by the same political party since 1971, and after winning a Landslide majority government tonight, i…
