Okay, so here's what happened today. During one of my preps, this woman brought up how much she HATED her car and would never buy another American car as long as she lived. She has a 2001 Alero, and has had nothing but problems (power window motors burning out of the rarely used back windows, power door locks burning out, radio malfunctions, etc.) The topic in the conference room just became what to buy, what would you get, blah blah blah. This is basically what the poll came out to just by hearing people's responses: What they said, "Most reliable to least reliable" 1) Japanese cars 2) German cars 3) Korean cars 4) American cars So, I interjected…

I went to the mall this morning to get my hair did (1 on the sides, 6 on top with a fade), and noticed the parking lot was sort of full. Turns out the SCCA was having an autocross event in a cordoned-off section of the lot. Oh man, was that fun to watch! Mostly ricers with a smattering of domestics, the cars represented a wide range, from a PT Cruiser convertible driven by a middle-aged lady, to a new Z06 driven by a slightly thinner Santa Claus (car sounded WAY HOT going through the cones!), and a Lotus Elise (dude spun it, dummy). There were Cobalt SS/SCs, ION Redlines, a lot of Miatas, Mini Coopers, WRXs and Evos... even an old Lumina Z34 DOHC coupe with a 5 speed!…

Into a... The Ram got a bit irritating both as a vehicle and in the mileage department (14.5mpg average over 280mi). Early impressions of this Freestyle are that its roomy, very comfortable, puts out respectable performance, and gives a nice view of the road without being perched too high. Nissan needs to reverse engineer this CVT because its surprisingly smoooooth and graceful in performance, not curiously 'hunting' like the Murano. Designwise, like a depressed Taurus wagon, but not too bad at all. On a humorous note, the guy I always deal with at Enterprise mentioned he also had two Sonatas and then quickly said, "But I wouldn't do that to you guys. Those things are…

Every month at our firmwide meetings, we have a quiz or a contest. Well, in September, they had a "building name and architect" quiz for buildings across the world...I won with 46 out of 50 correct. The executive assistant to the Pres hands me a pouch. It had an IPOD Nano. People go: "ooooh" but I don't know what to do with it. I'm going to Montreal on Saturday. I want to put songs I have on my computer plus some selected songs from CDs. Is it easy to do? How does one do it at their computer at work? Can I listen to these songs from a rental car? I have a question to ask you guys/gals.. Do you have some good tax tips you could offer? I am gathering stuff in order now (you can never be too early), and I have never been one who gets a bunch back. But with the new baby, I figure that might change a bit.... And on top of that, we made less money this year, as the wife has been out of work caring for the little guy....... And since I cooked my brain this month (been a few rough months), I am hoping to get a few ideas.. And also hoping it might help out others as well.......

SHAWNEE, Kan. (Sept. 26) - A would-be carjacker got away with nothing more than the keys Monday after he apparently was thwarted by the vehicle's manual transmission. The thief was armed with a shotgun when he ordered a 26-year-old man out of his Chevrolet Camaro in a suburban Kansas City parking lot. The driver complied, but when the robber got into the car he was unable to manage the stick shift. The robber fled the scene in a four-door car that someone else was driving. Police are investigating whether the attempted theft is linked to four similar robberies in Johnson County during the past week. Copyright 2005 The Associated Press

Ok so im in the market to get a new car.... mainly because I am now doing website work for a used dealership and I can get a car from them for auction price. My selections are a VW R32, and Audi A4 3.0 Quattro 2003, and Subaru STI and a Pontiac GTO 2004. All are fairly comparable in gas mileage and options and the like, but this will be my daily driver and I need to figure out which will be better expense-wise (cost of parts, gas, bang for the buck, utility and versitility. Today I was driving home from work getting off at Jordan Creek Parkway, which runs through the heart of upper-middle class suburbia in West Des Moines. I was in the lane to the left and zooming up beside me was a gouge-my-eyes-out bright orange Honda Civic, with white American Racing wheels, body kit, small wing, tint, altezza headlights, fart can...the whole works. His car sounded like a weedwacker on steroids. But the best part was that the guy had orange vinyl graphics covering the width of the window that boldly said "All Show, No Go." At least the guy was honest! ------------------ While I was looking for a good rice picture, I came across this....nice 1987 H…

At least they will be up in the series 2-1 after this loss. ...however the Tigers did win 18-1. I'm pretty sure they haven't won by that margin in...well forever maybe.

I was chatting with a girl I went to school with on Facebook this morning. Last year, she and her husband were looking to replace their Hyundai Elantra. They had been disappointed with the fuel mileage after being fooled by the numbers on the sticker, so I spoke up and recommended the Chevrolet Sonic. They ended up buying an orange Sonic LTZ 1.4t hatch, with sunroof and a manual, after testing it out for themselves. I was telling her about my desire to research a possible replacement for my Patriot, and I asked her for an update on their Chevy. Her husband believes there is a leak in the heater core... I am not sure of the symptoms. The radio stays on sometimes af…

It doesn't snow here often, and when it does they don't clear the roads. Well, the Buick decided to go one way and I wanted to go another. Unfortunetly the Buick headed towards a dirt wall. I hit it hard enough to crack up the driver's side fender, mess up the bumper and I'm sure more. When there is more light I'll be able to check it out better. For the record, this is my first on road accident.

Obviously unless you've been living under a rock you are well aware of the riots going on in Paris, France due to a new law being passed. It would allow companies to fire young workers for no reason at all. It's clear to see the global economy is set to wreak havoc on people 18-30 over the next two to three years as more countries pass such laws.

Do you work well under pressure? For a class tonight, I had to turn in a paper in the 7 to 10 page range. This is a more conceptual management class, so it had no numbers. (I like the objective ones better, actually). Last night at about 11 pm, I started a scratch outline. This morning at 6 am, I had no paper in process. It was due at 5:30 pm. I kicked into overdrive at about 2 pm, and walked in at 5:35 pm. It's all adult-type working students, so it didn't matter. I made it. I always get through, but I hate it. The eating at a diner and writing and all that stress to make a deadline. I always plan out "boxes of time" in advance but don't stick to them. …

The last car (and my only new car) I bought is my 1992 Regal. I still have it, as most of you know (** as you scream Cheapskate! **) The MSRP sticker was $ 18,736 and I got it for $ 16,900 without even saying a word. I went in there with a typed list of all the codes and MSRPs...I guess they don't see that often. So, on 5-16-92, right after getting back to Portland from Champaign IL (bleh!), I took delivery of the car. Now, the MSRPs on the sleds I am currently looking at are in the $ 23,500 to $ 24,500 range. Some have incentives of $ 1,000 or $ 1,500, for example. In your mind, that means that you should be able to get the initial deal (the dealer's "issue" - …

June 10, 2007 Tokyo, Japan Toyota Motor, under intense pressure, today announced a recall of the special edition of their Yaris subcompact car. Known as the Yaris Hilton, the unique, black and white striped runabout features a "distressed" pink leather interior. Owners are urged to return the vehicles to a service facility immediately for the following conditions: the horn engages on its own and will not stop blowing, even if the battery is disconnected. Owners report the horn blows constantly until, as it begins to burn out, it becomes so shrill only spayed and neutered neighborhood dogs can hear it. Also, the headlight washers, through a short in the body control…

This last weekend I went shoping with daughter #4 for her first new car. Like most people in her postion (and mine) money is important. My plan was to get a Chevy Cobalt LS with automatic transmission utilizing the almost $3000 GM card rebate. The test drive was ok, perhaps a lttile underwhelming to me. My daughter didn't like it all saying that it seemed like a rental car. I have no idea where she learned that expression. Things got worse as the nice, industrious young man who was helping us (3.5 weeks on the job) introduced us to his sales manager. Oh my God! What an obnoxious slimey, iley character he was. Motoring Memories: Chevrolet Corvair Spyder Turbocharged Story and photo by Bill Vance The compact Corvair, which Chevrolet introduced in 1960, had an aluminum, horizontally-opposed (flat), air-cooled six-cylinder engine located in the rear, and four wheel independent suspension. This put it away out of the mainstream of an American auto industry dominated by big cars with front-mounted cast iron V8s driving through a solid rear axle. The Corvair was inspired by the top-selling German Volkswagen, and along with cars like the Ford Falcon, Chrysler (later Plymouth) Valiant and American Motors Rambler, was meant as an import fighter. But if the Corvair wasn't differ…

I need to find a car or several cars that were built at least 5 years ago that offered manual transmissions only. These cars can be from as far back as the 60s or 70s until about 5-10 years ago and preferably, American made. The car could also have offered a manual transmission then later offered an automatic but not in the same model year. Please give model of car, year, and any other specifications that you might be helpful. I can’t really say who or what this is for but I will say that the information will go towards good use and in a couple of months, you might even find out what this information you give me was used for. I would prefer it if you sent your submis…

Oy, Xmas is almost here, and I'm not really into it this year. I have cards here to sign, address and send. I have no gifts bought. I've gotta get off my butt and get it done. I did get the house decorated though. Took all of three minutes. I need some sort of Christmas Mackerel to get me in the spirit of the holiday. Any suggestions?

Long story short: -Let sister borrow car today. -Doors already unlocked when she goes to open it. I think nothing of it at the time. -Used the car later in the day and upon coming home notice that my CD case is missing. -Tear apart the interior to no avail. -Conclusion: Someone entered my car the previous night and stole my $h!. I could've sworn I locked the damn thing when I parked it for the previous night. Result: ~$150 worth of CDs gone. So goddamn pissed right now...

...And will I be receiving it now its been released? No. Despite pre-ordering it back in the beginning of August, Newegg can do no better than tell me the Collector's Edition I ordered is out of stock. Couldn't tell me when I could expect it or anything of the sort. Disappointing? Majorly, I'm not too please with Newegg's service right at the moment.

What car would you re-badge back? An Opel Omega sold in the US as the Cadillac Catera who's owner turned it back into an Opel "Re-badging" and "Badge Engineering" are 4-letter words amongst auto enthusiasts. Car companies do it to shave the cost of developing a whole new vehicle. Usually in the process, the brand identities of both the donor and recipient brands get muddled. In our example above, Cadillac was trying to shoot for the European entry luxury market by importing and re-badging the respected in its home market, but decidedly not luxury, Opel Omega. The Omega probably could have sold successfully on it's own merits had it not been sold at Cadillac deale…

You're supposed to be able to find anything on the web, but I have searched a few times for this one car and come up empty (looking for pics). Maybe one of you guys knows where it is. There have been, I believe, 4 proposals for a 'new' Duesenberg to date (excluding 'classic repros'). This is the latest, the '06 'Torpedo' (frankly, it's hideous): Here's the '66, which came the closest to production; reportedly 50 were sold, but only 1 was built before legal issues cropped up and things were shut down. The prototype exists in fine shape at the A-C-D museum: This was a '63 proposal from Virgil Exner (he also proposed a number of other 'renewal' classics). Never buil…

Hey everybody, Its getting to be time to start thinking about replacing my Grand Prix. I just got back from the Dodge dealership where I test drove a '12 Charger with the new 8 speed auto. I wish I could buy it, but by the time I add the options I want, I can no longer afford it. I guess this brings my search to the used car market. I really want a RWD vehicle, but other than the Charger, the only things I can think of are BMW's and Mercede's or other foreign vehicles. I am a little nervous about buying a BMW or Merc with 40-50k miles on it, because of repairs and general cost of keeping it running. I like the G8, on one hand, but on the other hand I just don't kn…

Another thread just reminded me of a really dumb question I got as part of a Popular Music elective. A listening question. They played a track from Metallica (can't remember which one, not a single). This is: a. The Rolling Stones b. Metallica c. Nirvana d. AC/DC That's probably the first time I've laughed out loud in an exam.

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- A 79-year old driver plowed into a store in Fitchburg on Monday afternoon. The elderly woman not only accelerated into the building, but she drove over two curbs before crashing right through the storefront window. Firefighters pulled the woman out of her car and away from a sheet of broken glass that was hanging just inches from her head. Fortunately, she was able to walk away. “My first reaction...how did she do that,” said Simone Shoruy, who filmed the accident scene. Shoruy immediately rushed to the scene. “It looked like she was parking. She opened her door and before she even got out or anything, the door shut and she just accelerated into …

You like beer. I know you do. And your minions have been trying to lure me to the dark (and light) side for ages. While free beer at parties hasn't done it, perhaps a tour of Pennsylvania's beer industry has. I gathered a couple friends, we piled into an Infiniti QX56 and headed off to see the best of what Pennsylvania brews. Check out my article on "What Ales Ya" and let your friends know about some of the Keystone State's best breweries. http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/4401 What are your favorite (non-corporate) beers? Have you ever taken a brewery tour? Have you ever attended a beer tasting?

I've been thinking about this question for a little bit, and I haven't come to an obvious answer. The question is this: Why are warranties not an optional extra? Especially on cheap cars. I don't actually know how much a warranty costs, but it must be at least a few hundred dollars on today's reliable autos. A warranty is surely a much higher percentage of the cost of an economy car than a luxo barge, so why is it that very price-conscious consumers have not demanded this? And why have no bargain brands offered it? A warranty is merely an insurance policy on breakdowns; you can always buy one that goes beyond the one provided by the manufacturer. The only possible conclu…

G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy - www.CheersandGears.com McLaren F1 or Non Supercar, What is YOUR Choice? Road & Track pen'd a story about eight non-supercars with more power than a McLaren F1. Given the fact that many pay crazy amounts of money for a limited production run auto that seems to have a limited HP in relation to OEM production runs of normal models, one must ask: Is a Supercar that Super anymore? Here is the list of the 8 cars R&T have listed that they think is way better than a McLaren F1. Listed Low to High in the HP rating. Bentley Continental GT 633HP Chevy Corvette ZR1 638HP Cadillac CTS-V 640HP …

What are your New Year's Eve and New Year's Day Traditions? Since I am starting this off, I will tell you what Mine are, been the same for the last 26 years of Marriage. I am married to a Korean and they have very specific things that are done. We start off with a Korean Pot sticker making party in the first week of Dec. Make hundreds, people who help get some to take home, most are kept for use in what is called Korean New Year's Day Soup. We then start on the 26th and make a ton of homemade Beef broth with flank steak in it that is then shredded. We also make a wide variety of Korean side dishes from scratch. This takes multiple days as to why we …

...and it kicks monumental ass. B) I actually haven't listened to the entire thing yet but the song I'm currently listening to, "Coming Undone", is one of my instant favorites. I got the deluxe album which gives me a bonus CD with extra songs, remixes, and videos. Plus, I get a one-year membership to the Korn BSC fan club. The icing on the cake was getting a free Korn poster of the album art signed by the band. Such a good day. :)

Yeah... have fun without me, bitches! Never again will I come back here! Or I will... IDK. I won't be around for much of this upcoming week. I'll be at my grandparent's camping out in their camper while trying to sell my 300EX over there. Hopefully I'll sell it, being along a major highway (Rt 322). That and it'll be listed in the trade book. It better sell... but I have a feeling my back luck will continue. Either way, camping out will be refreshing. I've wanting to do it lately... even if it is in the backyard of my grandparent's house. Plus, my grandpa has some work for me to do, and I'm money hungry... Alright, tonight I'll be going over and having my 300 haul…

I'm embarking on yet another car search. It seems to be a yearly occurrence for me, though I still have a ways to go to reach the likes of Ocnblu's quarterly car purchasing spree. I'm probably not too far off at this rate... While I've loved my Legacy Turbo, it's becoming a bit of a burden. It's hard on insurance, even harder on gas, and hasn't been holding up as well as I had hoped. It's a great car with a performance pedigree (if you ignore the soft suspension, anyways), and It's likely to be my favorite over time. With that said, it has some faults that I overlooked originally. The most notable has to be the aforementioned gas mileage with my average often hanging bel…

Warning: Long essay/rant ahead. Well guys, it has been a while. I remember a couple years ago making threads on deciding what car I was to get. It has been about a year and a half since I have owned my 1999 BMW 540 6-speed. I just love the car. It is pretty close to what my view of a perfect car is. I love to drive it. It drives great, it is nice inside and out and has respectable performance. When I got the car it was pretty much stock (except for the Dinan CAI and Stage 2 software). Since then, the car and I have been through a lot together. When I got it I knew it wasn't going to be cheap, and that I would have to maintain it. This didn't bug me too much, and for …

A couple of years ago, my mother was driving her '05 Cobalt base sedan and constantly complaining about how hard it was to get in and out of it. She became aware of the 3 boxy hatchbacks that were hitting the market... xB, Cube, and Soul. She was enamored, I was bemused. Until I realized that for a little lady of her age (4'11", age 65 at the time), the ease of entry and cabin volume with small footprint, affordability and good fuel mileage might be ideal for her. So after test driving the Cube and Soul (with her in the passenger seat, amusingly), she decided on the Cube for its laid back, rolling living room feel and "unique" looks. The flat seats and soft suspensio…
