What’s Better Than Outstanding? We hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds with the latest 3-series. BY TONY SWAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY AARON KILEY September 2006 Experience has taught us that no vehicle is immune to improvement. No matter how seductive the styling, no matter how compelling the dynamics, we know that somewhere squads of designers and engineers are toiling to make a good thing even better. Consider the BMW 335i sedan. When the fifth generation 3-series sedan made its debut in early 2005, it was hard to see just where a significant improvement might be made in this outstanding car. Then the 335i coupe came along, and suddenly the plan became clear. Right: they’ll make tha…

Cataloging the Past: BMW Mobile Tradition builds an “original” 2002tii from its own parts book MATT DAVIS Posted Date: 11/18/05 BMW has worked for more than a generation developing its “Ultimate Driving Machine” reputation. In 1959 its three-box body cars were the ones to have, and today the potent V10 M5 sedan carries on the tradition. Back then, though, the most sought after by enthusiasts was the 2002tii, whose designation means “Touring International (with) Injection.” Of some 39,000 2002tiis sold between 1971 and 1975, 7500 came to the States between August 1971 and December 1974. As you read this, BMW Mobile Tradition (the vintage caretakers of the marq…

November 23, 2005 Test Drive: 2006 BMW 530xi Touring Wagon By Veeno Dewan Photos by Greg Wilson In the UK, where I come from, station wagons are known as "Estate cars." Apparently British automotive folklore has it that a wealthy Lord of the Manor wanted a car with a covered rear section so he could tote his pheasant shooting guns while hunting around his thousand-acre country estate: hence the term ‘estate car'. Another more elegant term for this vehicle was the ‘Shooting Brake'. I remember seeing a few old pictures of Jaguars, Rovers and even an Aston Martin converted to these ‘Shooting Brakes'. Yes, I admit station wagons keys have passed through my greasy pa…

2008 BMW M5 Touring BMW’s hottest property at the Geneva motor show in March will likely be an M5 Touring (wagon) version of its screaming M5 sedan. The high-performance load hauler is set to compete against the likes of the Audi S6 Avant and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon, with power coming from the same highly strung 5.0-liter V10 engine used in the two-year-old M5 sedan. As with the M5 sedan, the new car comes with BMW’s seven-speed M-sequential gearbox standard, along with an array of electronic driving aids, including an electronic controlled M-differential and a unique software program that allows the driver to choose between a detuned state for the engine, in whi…

Best look yet at BMW's next-generation 7 Series By Phil Lienert Email Date posted: 12-19-2005 We haven't seen the 2009 BMW 7 Series, but we know people who have a good idea of what it's going to look like. They put together these renderings based on their insider knowledge to give us a peek at what we can expect from BMW's next flagship sedan. Clear from these pictures, the radical design of the current model has been toned down for the 2009 7 Series. The 2006 7 Series already softened some of the harder edges that offended so many BMW loyalists, but this design will go even further. The most obvious difference between this conceptual 2009 7 Series and t…

BMW 1-Series U.S.-Bound (Eventually) Way back in January of this year, BMW's CEO, Tom Purves, was quoted by Automotive News as saying that the 1-series, "is absolutely coming" and up until now, that's the last we've heard. Now, in another interview with AutoNews, Norbert Reithofer, BMW's newest CEO, says, "We will definitely bring the 1-series to the United States, but it will not be a hatchback." Instead, we should expect a coupe, sedan and station wagon (although we're not quite sure how that's different from the image above) in the future. Autoblog

Yes, BMW is leaving no market sector unoccupied with its 1-series. Due to be unveiled at next year's Detroit motorshow in January - BMW is hoping that 1-series coupe and convertible take-up in America will boost 1-series past the half million mark. It arrives here in April with the range spearheaded by the flagship 135i convertible, available in BMW's two familiar trim levels - SE and M Sport. We anticipate the topdog M Sport to wear an anticipated £34,000 price tag. Expect it be followed by the 125i powered by BMW's 218bhp 2.5-litre six-cylinder petrol engine as well as the 204bhp twin-turbo 123d diesel by the end of the year. For kicks, Car and Driver compared the Euro spec 330d turbo diesel to the 330i and full road test. They got 38 mpg combined and over 40 highway mpg at times. To top it off, it got 0-60 in 6.0 seconds and passing times were quicker than the gas version because of the monstrous torque. And yet, the USA and Califronia etc. tries to do everything they can to kill diesels. Just when we get 'clean diesel' now the regulations become like 10 times as hard to meet. Its enough to p1ss ya off. I would love to have a 3 series diesel with stick and AWD if they had one here. Between the greenies and the government and the scared oil companies, how are we ever gonna get ahe…

BMW 5-series GT Greg Kable AutoWeek February 13, 2009 - 9:32 am ET BMW's desire to compete in every conceivable luxury-market niche has moved up a gear with the unveiling of the 5-series GT, a car known until now by its working title, the Progressive Activity Sedan. Although BMW will be billing the five-door liftback as a concept at its public showing at the Geneva motor show in early March, little about its bold design is expected to change before it reaches showrooms. In fact, the official photographs reveal the new car in its production-based glory. Only the trim will be altered before it sees the showroom, BMW says. By insisting that it is called a GT…

BMW CS Concept revealed (New 8-Series?) BMW has taken the wraps off the CS Concept — a new "four-door-coupe" designed to tackle the Mercedes CLS, Porsche Panamera, and Maserati Quattroporte. The car is likely a preview of the recently rumored 8-Series revival, or alternatively a four-door 6-Series. Either way, it points to BMW's future design direction for the company as a whole. The debut of the CS Concept follows a report by German car magazine Auto Zeitung that claimed BMW would launch a four-door coupe using the 8-Series designation, starting with a new 850i. In June 2006, Germany's Auto Bild ran a cover story on BMW's planned rival to the Mercedes CLS. The magazin…

HANNOVER, Germany — Thermaltake, the Taiwanese manufacturer of computer cases and cooling equipment, unveiled its "Level 10" PC case at the annual CeBIT computer exposition here. The Thermaltake Gaming Tower was designed by the Munich studio of BMW's DesignworksUSA. Instead of utilizing the normal strategy of throwing all the different computer parts into one bulky, rectangular case, BMW dreamt up this idea of using a separate protective case for each component. The design of the Thermaltake Gaming Tower makes the inside components visible to help with cooling and make it look more appealing to the user. An innovative feature of the concept is its smart locking system…

BMW Disappointed With 5-Series GT Sales William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 23, 2011 When BMW introduced the 5-Series GT back in 2009, the company said the vehicle was a stylish alternative (their words, not ours) to minivans and crossovers. BMW also hoped the 5-Series GT would appeal to owners of the 5-Series Touring. Well, the 5-Series GT is becoming a disappointment for BMW. According to Automotive News, BMW of North America CEO Jim O’Donnell said sales of the 5-Series GT in the US have been disappointing. BMW had hoped the 5-Series GT would sell around 4,000 to 8,000 per year, but has only sold 2,848 vehicles in 2010. That's only…

The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model that was seen via video being installed in the BMW Museum in Munich last week has finally been revealed, and the futuristic design study shows how BMW designers are thinking outside of the box when it comes to the materials that make up a car and also how the car relates to the driver. GINA stands for "Geometry and Functions in 'N' Adaptations", which basically means that designers from both BMW and BMW Group DesignworksUSA were allowed to throw out the rulebook. This is most evident in the GINA Light Visionary Model's outer skin, which is made entirely out of textile fabric that's pulled taut around a frame of metal and carbon fiber wir…

BMW M3 recalled over new double-clutch gearbox From AutoBlog Dual clutch transmission... sounds complicated. And it is. Case in point: BMW's new DCT on its latest-generation M3. This new transmission from Munich is so complicated that apparently even BMW couldn't get it right the first time, so they're issuing a recall. The problem, as concluded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is that under hard braking the transmission's software is prone to initiate a multi-stage downshift, which could cause the car to stall. The solution, however, should be fairly simple, as BMW is asking all owners of 2008 or 2009 M3s equipped with the DCT (about 2,500 …

BMW has pulled the covers off the 2016 X1 crossover that will go on sale this fall in the U.S. While the X1 was sold in other markets since 2009, it only came to the U.S. in 2012. Lets talk about the elephant in the room. This is the first BMW to be sold in the U.S. to be based on the German automaker's UKL platform that underpins the new MINI Cooper and other BMW vehicles sold in Europe. Our X1 will only come in all-wheel drive form. Power will come from the 2.0L TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder generating 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic gets the power to all four wheels. The design is heavily influenced by the X5 with a sim…

Previous Page Next Page BMW has finally pulled the covers off the 2017 5 Series. Wearing the codename G30, the new 5 Series looks to be borrowing a number of items from its larger brother, the 7 Series. The most obvious item shared between the two is the design. Looking at the pictures that BMW released, you would swear that you're looking at a 7 and not 5. Details such a wider kidney grille, new headlights, bold character line, and reshaped trunk are some of items both models share. The only difference is the 5 Series is smaller. One item we're glad to see is the 5 Series not growing much in terms of size. Compared to the 2016 model, the…

The BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo answered a question that no one outside of BMW was asking. It wasn't a pleasing vehicle to look at which affected sales. Still, BMW believes in the Gran Turismo and has decided to make the successor part of the 6-Series family. Thus, the 2018 BMW 6-Series GT. Whenever there is a new 5-Series, the countdown clock is started for the arrival of high-performance M5. Today, the clock hit zero as BMW unveiled the 2018 M5. Under the hood lies a familiar twin-turbo 4.4L V8 with 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque - healthy increases of 40 and 53 respectively. A new eight-speed automatic is the sole transmission choice, sorry manual lovers. The 2018 M5 also comes with the M xDrive system which can either send power to all four wheels or just the rear wheels if you want to some smoky drifts. 60 mph comes in 3.2 seconds and can hit a top speed of 155 mph (189 mph if you opt for the M Driver's Package). BMW is very proud of their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant; currently home to the X3, X4, X5, and X6 crossovers. So it comes as no surprise that company chose Spartanburg to debut the third-generation X3 crossover. Styling-wise, the 2018 X3 is an evolution of the current model. There are some changes to help set the new X3 apart from the old model such as a more aggressive front bumper, new take on the kidney grille, slimmer taillights, and twin exhaust tips. The wheelbase has been extended by 2.2-inches, helping balance out the X3's proportions. The interior is a mix of the current X3 and new 5-Series. This launches the M2 Competition to 60 mph in 4 seconds with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission or 4.2 seconds with the six-speed manual. Both times are a tenth of a second faster than the standard M2. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, but can increase to 174 with the M Drivers package. BMW is making the M5 just a slightly bit more aggressive with the debut of the M5 Competition. Following in the footsteps of the M2 Competition, the M5 version tweaks the powertrain, chassis, and exterior. Beginning under the hood, the twin-turbo 4.4L V8 sees a slight boost in horsepower from 600 to 617. Torque remains at 553 pound-feet, although BMW has broadened the peak torque range. 0-60 mph sees a slight improvement of 0.3 seconds - 3.1 vs. 3.4. For the chassis, BMW has added stiffer engine mounts, M-specific Variable Damper Control system, revised mounting points for the front anti-roll bar, lowered ride height, and a stiffer rear anti-roll bar. Whether or not you care for the BMW X4 'sport activity coupe', it is a big hit around the world. To keep its popularity up, the German automaker revealed the second-generation X4 this morning. Like the X3 on which it is based, the 2019 X4 sees an increase in overall length (3 inches) and width (2 inches). Most important for those sitting in the back is the extra 2 inches between the wheels, which should help improve rear legroom. The front end is similar to the redesigned X3 with larger kidney grilles, larger air intakes, and a new design for the foglights. The back features a tailgate design similar to the Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLE-Coupes. The inter…

It appears to be German crossover day. This morning, we reported on Audi's new 'coupe' crossover, the Q8. This evening, BMW has pulled the covers off the 2019 X5. Like the new X3, the 2019 X5 doesn't look all that different at first glance. Get a bit a closer and the changes become noticeable. The front is slightly bolder with a sculpted hood, larger kidney grilles, and hard corners for the headlights. The side profile features slightly more sculpting for the doors. The 2019 BMW X7 has finally made its debut and its quite big, and I'm not talking about the grille. Parked next to the X5, the X7 is nine inches longer, making it the longest crossover BMW has sold. For the most part, BMW's designers didn't go too crazy with the design. The overall profile is similar to Mercedes' GLS-Class with a boxy profile and large glass area. One interesting trait is the rear doors being slightly longer than the front to allow for easier access into the second and third rows. Where designers decided to go nuts is the front end and its large kidney grilles. It's a bit much when contrasted with the slim LED headlights. The X7's interior looks t…

Last year, BMW used Monterey Car Week to show off the Z4 Concept. Today, the 2019 Z4 made its world debut at Pebble Beach. The design matches up with the concept, for better and worse. The front end reminds us oddly of the Fiat 124 Spider with a sculpted hood, large headlights, and expansive vents. A set of kidney grilles feature mesh inserts. Along the side, there is a fair amount of sculpting for the doors and venting behind the front wheels. The back is very short and has a trunk that incorporates a ducktail spoiler. The particular model featured in the photos is known as the First Edition and comes with Frozen Orange Metallic paint, an anthracite fabric top, and 1…

BMW has taken the wraps off the 2020 BMW 2-series Gran Coupe. It will come in two flavors, a 228 hp 228i Drive and a 301hp M235i xDrive. The 228i is powered by BMW's "B" modular engine family. It produces 228 horsepower from 5,000 rpm - 6,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque from 1,450 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The M235i increase that to 301 horsepower from 5,000 rpm - 6,250 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque from 1,750 rpm - 4,500 rpm. The 235's engine gets larger diameter main bearings, new pistons connecting rods, a larger turbocharger, and a larger capacity cooling system. all of that gets you to 60 in 4.7 seconds, a 1.3 second improvement over the 6.0 seconds the base engine gets y…

After many years, auto enthusiasts in the United States can purchase a 2024 BMW Z4 with a six-speed manual. Production is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024 and no pricing has been released, but there is some speculation. BMW’s more powerful Z4 M40i will exclusively have the option of a manual gearbox. M40i Z4’s come with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 328 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. This unique manual transmission was a collaboration between BMW and transmission company ZF. Manual-equipped Z4s get a rear axel from the BMW M240i which gives the Z4 an M Performance limited-slip differential. Other changes compared to the automatic include stiffer front a…

BMW's M4 Competition, with its three-liter twin-turbo inline-six, already has a lot of power, clocking in at 503 horsepower. For 2025, BMW decided to add more power to the xDrive all-wheel-drive trim for 2025, bumping it up 20 to 523 horsepower. For comparison, non-Competition trims of the Rear-wheel-drive M4 use the same three-liter twin-turbo inline-six producing "just" 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque while the more powerful rear-wheel-drive Competition makes 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. With the six-speed manual transmission, the standard M4 coupe accelerates from 0-60 MPH in 4.1 seconds, while more powerful rear-wheel-drive Competition…

BMW is covering the efficiency and performance bases of the new 5-Series with two new models. On the efficiency front, there is the 2018 530e iPerfomance. This is a plug-in hybrid with a 2.0L turbo-four paired with an electric motor and a 9.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Preliminary figures stand at 248 horsepower and 310 pound-feet. 0-60 mph is said to take 6.1 seconds. Fuel economy figures and overall battery range will be announced at a later time. Recharging the battery takes less than 7 hours when plugged into a 120V outlet and less than 3 hours when plugged into a fast charger. For performance, there is the 2018 M550i xDrive. Under the hood is…

BMW has revealed the 1-Series sedan today in China. This is the German automaker's belated answer to the likes of the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA. BMW has only released one image of the new model, but we can tell the design is the same as the Concept Compact Sedan that debuted at last year's Guangzhou Auto Show. BMW's press release on this model is very sparse on technical details. We do believe this sedan is using the UKL front-wheel drive platform that underpins the BMW X1 and Mini Cooper. Power will likely come from turbocharged three and four-cylinder engines. It is expected the model will go on sale soon in China and be produced at Brilliance Auto's plant …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 5, 2012 For the past year or so, we been reporting on whether the next-generation BMW 3-Series coupe and convetible would be sticking with the 3-Series or moving up to the 4-Series. Well, BMW has made the decision to go with the 4-Series for the next-generation coupe and convertible as evidenced by BMW revealing the new 4-Series coupe concept. The 4-Series coupe concept shares a similar style to the 3-Series sedan, but the coupe sports more aggressive body work, including dramatic sculpting on the front bumper, a more pointed front grille, full LED headlights, and fender gills. The 4-Series coupe interior is the…

BMW offered the last-generation 7-Series with a diesel option in the U.S. and there was talk of offering it again with this current model. But these plans have been taken off the table. German magazine Focus reported last Friday that plans for 7-Series diesel in the U.S. were shelved. This information came from engineers at Bosch. This week, BMW Blog got the official word from BMW. “Currently there are no plans to bring the 7 Series diesel to the US market,” said Hector Arellano-Belloc, BMW NA spokesperson. No official reason was given, but BMW Blog speculates the decision likely comes from the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal. At the present moment, BMW…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 24, 2013 BMW has taken the covers off the new 2-Series Coupe before its official debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January. The new 2-Series continues BMW's trend of naming coupes and convertibles as even numbers. The 2-Series is much more streamlined and better proportioned than the 1-Series it replaces. Dimensionally, the 2-Series is about 2.8 inches longer, 1.3 inches wider, and rides on a wheelbase that is 1.3 inches longer. Under the hood are two different engines. 228i: 2.0L Turbo-Four, 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque M235i: 3.0L turbocharged inline-six, 322 horsepower and 332 pound-fe…

The binding agreements finalize a technology partnership that was announced in December 2011. On the fuel cell front, BMW and Toyota will combine their existing resources and knowledge to develop a complete fuel-cell vehicle system; including a fuel stack, hydrogen tank, motor and battery, by 2020. The two companies will also look into the infrastructure needed for hydrogen. Also planned is research into lithium-air batteries which promise five times the ene…

Whenever one German automaker does something new, others will follow. For example, the BMW X6 caused Mercedes-Benz to launch the GLE-Coupe. Now with the launch of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class in certain markets, BMW's Australian office is pushing the main office for a pickup truck. “We cannot close our eyes and neglect it, we cannot neglect market trends,” said Marc Werner, head of BMW Australia. "We have been very pushy regarding utes or pick-ups, and we believe that this is something the company should be looking into. We have raised that with headquarters and certainly investigations are happening as we speak, but it’s too early to speak about the results of tha…

There are days where we find ourselves wondering what goes through the head of executives of German automakers on some of the things they say. For example, BMW Australia’s Managing Director, Marc Werner told Motoring there could be a BMW pickup. “Never say never,” said Werner when asked about Mercedes-Benz's upcoming truck. “We’re watching the space closely.” “It’s easier for Mercedes [to bring a ute to market] because they have commercial vehicles and trucks and vans. We do not.” If BMW was to go forward, Motoring speculates that the tie-up with Toyota could grant them access to the HiLux truck. These comments are the complete opposite from those made by …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 16, 2012 With the last generation 3-Series and current X5, BMW brought back the diesel engine to their lineup. A 3.0L inline-six producing 265 HP and 425 lb-ft of torque. That could send a 3-Series to 60 MPH in 5.3 seconds and a X5 in 6.9 seconds. However, the concern is not performance, but fuel economy. BMW realizes this and has a pair of new diesel engines on their way to show it. This past Friday, Automobile senior editor Jason Cammisa tweeted out that BMW would introduce a 2.0L, single-turbo, inline-four diesel engine producing 180 HP and 280 lb-ft of torque. There is also a second diesel engine on its way. B…

If BMW wants to be in top in the compact luxury marketplace, then it needs to constantly improve the 3-Series. BMW knows this fact very well and has announced improvements for the 2016 3-Series. The big changes for the 3-Series lie under the hood. First is the 340i which takes place of the 335i. It boasts a new all-aluminum twin-turbocharged 3.0L straight-six with 320 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic will come standard, while a six-speed manual with rev matching will be a no cost option. BMW's XDrive all-wheel drive will be an option. The other change is the introduction of the 330e, the first plug-in hybrid 3-Series. BMW estimates figur…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 29, 2013 For the past few years on the automotive auto show circuit, BMW has been showing off two concept vehicles that previews a new sub-brand; the i3 electric vehicle and i8 plug-in hybrid. Today in New York City, BMW pulled the covers off the first production vehicle of their new i sub-brand, the i3. The BMW i3 is definitely a different type of vehicle from the Munich automaker. Built on what BMW calls the LifeDrive architecture, the i3 comes in two parts. First is the Life Module which is the i3's body. The Life Module is made out of carbon fiber reinforced plastic which contributes to the i3's curb weight of a…

While the BMW i8 Coupe is heading into production, the convertible version has hit a snag or two. Autocar has learned from a BMW spokesperson that the i8 Spyder has presented "major challenges" in the engineering department. The problem is due to the carbon fiber-reinforced plastic construction that provides the rigidity and lightness for i8. If you take off the roof like on the i8 Spyder, it becomes very difficult to add rigidity to the shell. "The last architecture presented some fairly major challenges, to be able to produce a convertible in that format. The rigidity was hard to find with that particular architecture," said a BMW spokesman. The spokesman went onto sa…

BMW is coming close to making a decision on a possible third member of their i family. Autocar says there are two proposals for the next model which is known as the i5. Ian Robertson, BMW's board member who oversees sales and marketing says the company is in “the final stages” of which proposal to go with. “You will see more i products, and we are in the final stages of deciding what the next car will be and when you’ll see it,” said Robertson. BMW has issued a profit warning for 2019, saying that profits will be well below last year's 7.2€ billion. The company stated that higher raw material costs, unfavorable currency exchange, and compliance with stricter emissions standards are the main causes for the profit erosion. BMW is not planning for layoffs at this time, but those could come in the future as the company moves to simplify and consolidate its product portfolio. One area that will see cuts is in powertrains. BMW plans to cut the number of engine/transmission options in half and simplify platforms in a move to streamline operations. BMW plans to reduce the development time of new vehicles by one t…

BMW announced today their new flagship electrical SUV, the BMW iX. This SUV will launch late in 2021 as a 2022 model. The style will likely be controversial as it retains the concepts overly large kidney grill front end but maintains a sleek drag coefficient of 0.25 Cd which is equal to the Tesla X. This AWD SUV has one motor per axles giving a combined 370 kW or 500 horsepower with a 0 to 62 mph of under 5 seconds. A 100 kW battery pack that will give 600 kilometers on the WLTP cycle or 300 plus miles on the EPA cycle FTP-75. These figures are subject to change once official testing is done. The BMW iX has a 200 kW charging controller for DC fast charging…

BMW unveiled the Concept iX3 at the Beijing Motor show in April of 2018. The overall look of the crossover is somewhat conventional, but with the traditional kidney grille being closed off for aerodynamic reasons and special aerodynamic wheels. The production iX3 will be rear-wheel drive only and have a peak rating of 286 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. All of that power comes from a single motor. The motor is BMW's fifth-generation eDrive powertrain developed solely in house. BMW says that the technology used in this motor is scalable and thus can be used in different automotive segments. The battery is a 74-kWh pack that is capable of powering the iX3 fo…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 10, 2011 It seems every automaker is introducing four-door coupe. Within the past few years Mercedes has introduced the CLS, Volkswagen with the CC, Porsche and the beluga whale or Panamera, and Audi with the A7. Now, BMW has introduced their four-door coupe; the 6 Series Grand Sport. The 6 Series Grand Sport started life as a concept at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show and is almost a direct copy of the concept. It seems some changes are coming to BMW's M division based on recent comments from the head of the division, Frank van Meel. First up is transmissions. van Meel tells Autocar that DCT dual-clutch and automatic transmissions have a bright future for M cars. Not so much for the manual transmission as sales are declining. “From a technical standpoint, the future doesn’t look bright for manual gearboxes. The DCT and auto ’boxes are faster and they have better fuel consumption. It’s difficult to say we’ll stick to the manual, but we still have a big fan community for manuals and we are not going to take away something the customer wants to have,” said van Meel. van…

While Mercedes-Benz and Audi have offered performance versions of the flagship sedans, BMW has been the outlier. The closest the German automaker has gotten is the B7 done by BMW specialist Alpina. But BMW M's engineering boss Albert Biermann has dreams of an M7. “I would love to compete in this area of the market. The money is just there to pick up. An M7 would be a much different proposition to the B7,” Biermann told Autocar. Now Biermann says such a model isn't in their plans at the moment. In 2018, when BMW launched it's 7.0 operating system for its in-car infotainment, it included Apple Car Play for free for the first 12 months. After that, the owner was asked to pay $80 for a 1 year subscription to Car Play or $300 for a 240 month subscription. This caused a stir among BMW owners because Apple Car Play is included at no charge in nearly every other brand out there and because Apple doesn't charge manufacturers to use Apple CarPlay in their models. Models as basic as the Chevrolet Sonic have CarPlay as standard and without any subscription fees. Now BMW has confirmed it is backing away from the subscription model in order to keep customers happy. Al…

BMW has plans of launching 25 electrified models by 2025 - 12 of those being fully electric. But don't expect to start seeing mass production of those 12 models anytime soon. BMW is planning on a new EV on a platform shared with Daimler according to reports. The new car, called the i2, would be about the same size as the current BMW i3, but without the expensive carbon fiber body. The i2, aimed for a 2024 launch, would have a starting price less than 30,000€ ($34,000). BMW wants to have a 300km (186 mile) range. BMW recently revised the i3 to have a larger battery. The revised battery is 42.2 kWh and gives the i3 a range of 153 miles. Sales of the combined models from both BMW and Daimler would be targeted around 500,000 annually. View full article

Usually, an automaker will announce they are ending production of a certain model. BMW didn't do that when it stopped production of the 6-Series coupe back in February. Road & Track got confirmation about this change from a BMW spokesperson. No reason was given as to why production of the coupe ended, but it is a safe bet that low sales played a role in this decision. This only adds fuel to the fire about reports that BMW is working on an 8-Series coupe. Our last report back in October said the company was planning to launch the 8-Series in late 2018 with the coupe. A convertible and V12 would follow sometime thereafter. Because of this, the 6-Series coupe a…

The effects of the on-going trade spat between the U.S. and China are beginning to be felt. According to Reuters, BMW is increasing the pricing on the U.S.-built X5 and X6 crossovers for the Chinese market. In a statement, BMW said the price increases will range from four to seven percent. This will only make a small dent in the 40 percent tariff being slapped on U.S. made vehicles entering China. BMW will be absorbing the remainder of the tariff for the time being. “BMW stands for free (trade) but can’t stand still without taking actions to respond to the market changes,” said a BMW spokeswoman. Recently, there has been a shift in BMW's sales plans. Walter Mertl, BMW's Chief Financial Officer, said they have hit the tipping point for internal combustion engines (ICE) and will focus more on electric cars. Mertl also says that ICE vehicle sales have plateaued and will start to decrease. This is due to changes in environmental regulations with stricter or zero emissions. Regulations from China, the European Union, and the United States are causing automakers to expedite creating and producing electric vehicles (EVs). In 2023, 15% of BMWs sold globally were EVs. Their most popular model was the i4 M50 for the second year in a row. BMW is targeting a 33% share by…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 14, 2012 For awhile now, we been reporting about BMW heading to the front-wheel for certain number of their upcoming vehicles. Now, we get our first peek into that future with the Concept Active Tourer. The Concept Active Tourer is BMW’s interpretation of the tall-hatchback shape (Mercedes-Benz B-Class). The front end features the twin-kidney grille, angular headlights, and large air dams on the front bumper. Around the side, the Concept Active Tourer has a distinctive character line. The back is a mixture of BMW’s wagon and crossover design cues. The interior features an advanced, multicolor head-up display, …

Despite the mess and tepid reception given to diesel models in the U.S. due to Volkswagen emission scandal, there are still some automakers who believe in it. A BMW spokesperson has confirmed to Car and Driver that diesel variant of the new 5-Series would be arriving in the U.S., although no timeframe was given. The model will be named the 540d. Car and Driver believe the model will be powered by the 3.0L inline-six turbodiesel found in the European-market 530d producing 262 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. The 540d possibly means our version will produce slightly more power. Source: Car and Driver View full article

It will be a long wait till we see the final product, but BMW has released a teaser picture of their upcoming 2-Series Gran Coupe 4-door sedan due to be released at the LA Auto Show later this year. This car will compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3 compact front wheel drive sedans. The BMW 2-series Gran Coupe will be running with front wheel drive as well. Under the hood expect a 2 liter turbo charged engine transversely mounted as in the BMW X2. In the X2, the motor produces 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque running through an 8-speed automatic. Don't expect a manual gearbox. All-wheel drive is a possibility and may even be standard in U.S. bou…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 7, 2013 Audi has done it since the start of their S and RS lineup; Mercedes-Benz has begun to do it with AMG, and now it appears BMW is thinking about adding it to their M cars again. What am I referring to is the addition of all-wheel drive. Motoring spoke with BMW M's president Friedrich Nitschke who revealed that the next-generation M5 and M6 could come with the option of all-wheel drive. “On our cars we are thinking of all-wheel drive, but it won’t come before we get the successor of the M5 and M6. That’s the timing and it’s not practical to react in the current life cycles. It would also be an additional op…

BMW has been in a holding pattern in terms of producing diesel vehicles for the U.S. as they were awaiting approval from the EPA retesting diesel vehicles. Soon, 2017 model year diesel vehicles will be rolling off BMW's assembly lines and heading off to the U.S. "Diesel models will be going into production shortly at our manufacturing plants," said Rebecca K. Kiehne, product & technology spokesperson at BMW of North America to Green Car Reports. As we reported back in October, the EPA was holding back the certifications on a number of diesel vehicles as they subjecting them to new tests to uncover possible cheating - thanks Volkswagen. In our report, BMW sai…
