While out driving this afternoon, I was doing a bit of radio channel surfing and caught the end of 'Prairie Home Companion'...apparently, the show has Toyota as a sponsor, 'cause Garrison Keillor was saying something to the effect that Toyota has increased the production of the Prius, making it easier than ever to get yourself one. Hmmm.... the bastion of upper Midwestern square has sold out! (I'd picture GK being more of a staid Oldsmobile or Volvo man than a Pious driver)..

I've been itching to get a hold of an older Simplicity snowblower for a year+ now, as I think they look really neat and really sturdily made. Well one finally popped up close to home for $50 so I had to get it. It's not the two stage paddle style snowblower I also want, but the single stage S4. This is easily the beefiest single stage snowblower I've ever come across. It weighs probably double what the Craftsman we have weighs and for good reason: its built to last. Thick steel, metal guards for everything, chains, greaseable parts, gear drive transmission. What's not to love? Well old gas that rusted out the fuel tank and gummed up the carburetor. I was a afraid t…

Characters that truly represent the original crew of the Enterprise and some kick ass entertaining movies. Officially original Spock has died and a solid tribute to him was done in the last movie. Sadly the actor playing Chekov died over the summer due to an accident with his jeep and pinning him down till he suffocated and died. So lets discuss where we think this story is going to go, take the easy way with refiliming the same story lines, new story lines, what? How will they deal with Chekov's death? Will they mark it as …

  8. My son Joel has a really cool friend Paul who is 16 and learning how to drive. Paul's dad has a nice older Cadillac (similar to Sixty-Eights bannana boat). Paul was pulling into his parent's attached garage, being coached by his father. His father said "now hit the brakes gently." Instead of hitting the brakes Paul hit the gas by mistake. While people may debate the fuel economy and such of old caddies, one thing is for sure...they are just the cat's ass when it comes to destroying drywall and 2x4 studs. The car lurched forward, through the garage wall and into the living room. About six grand worth of damage to the house and a similar amount to the car. While it …

Did you ever frequent a business not only because you like the service, or the food, etc., but because you have a little "thing" going with someone who works there? This evening before heading home, I stopped by a college hangout/pizza joint that I used to go to every few weeks, but hadn't been in about 4 months. Whenever I went in, I used to look for the pizza chef back at the brick oven (not a counter person). He always gave me a special smile and said hello, and I did likewise. Nothing more ever came of it. He's a tall, skinny Italian guy, and there's something intense about him. Anyway, since I hadn't been there in so long, I kind of forgot about him, until toni…

We were traveling on the interstate over the weekend and a big, ugly-@ssed van came up behind us in a major hurry (we were only doing about 70 at the time, in the right lane). In the mirror, the front end looked like a Honda Element with a serious pituitary gland issue. It then zoomed by in the far left lane and I wasn't able to get a look at any emblems. It *might* have been a Nissan NV, but it was far uglier and more awkward-looking than any NV I'd seen before. P.S. I STILL haven't seen a new Dodge Dart under its own power.

I'm just concerned that it will be too weak to stay straight after being fixed. Watcha think?

So even if you already follow our Facebook page, please use the button on the front page again. 73. What extinct or endangered body style do you want to see come back? February 13th, 2011 Drew Dowdell - CheersandGears.com Over the years body styles have come and gone. Oh sure, the basic trio of sedan, coupe, wagon are still around, but even those three had subtypes. The example shown above is from my personal favorite body style. The Cadillac Eldorado was a coupe, yes, but it was of a subtype called a Personal Luxury Coupe. This sub-type of coupe was marketed as it's own category in years past. Indeed in 1980, there were no less than 14 Personal Luxury Coupe models offered by just the Detroit three. By 1990, that number was down to about 8 and by 2000 only the Cad…

I was in the desert on Saturday. It was 110+. Sure it was dry heat, but it was also 110. In May, I took 1 week of vacation and went to Florida. You rarely see triple digits in Florida but the 85 to 90 is always accompanied by high humidity (and thunderstorms). Obviously, I prefer 85 with 40% humidity, but if you had to pick....I seem to respond negatively to the high Farenheits. Your comfort zone?

  75. Anyone else have thoughts of changing up the automotive family? For a while, I've wanted to add the following vehicles to my car family: 1975 Caprice Classic convertible 1977 Caprice Classic sedan 1978 Caprice Classic coupe 1989 Caprice Classic 9C1 1987 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe But, now ... the only vehicle I want to add to my family is a 1989 Caprice Classic (sedan or 9C1), to be the "summer" daily driver to my "winter warrior" 1979 Caprice Classic sedan. Along with that, I've decided that, if the "right" '1989 CC (good shape, FI, cruise control, A/C, power, road trip worthy, etc.) comes along, I'll probably sell my 1972 MC. Why? Because my '72 MC is the only "…

So I had some circa '71 GM seatbelt buckles laying around, left over from the Cutlass days (these didn't work because GM had changed the buckle/harness design in '72). Deciding not to let them go to waste, I decided it would be cool to put them to good use. After a few cigarettes, some glue and thread, and a cheap-o Dickies strap I had snagged for free later, I had this: Yeah, the pic sucks. Cut my 3GS some slack. Sure, Levy's makes a seat belt strap, but it's nowhere as cool as this. While Levy's claims that they use real, recycled buckles, you only have to take one look at their straps to see that it's obvious they're just blowing hot air. However, this is made from…

Good News We're mostly settled into our new house, although there's still a lot of boxes to unpack & some of my clothes are MIA. Bad News Business has been exceptionally slow for almost two months now and that combined with the expenses of moving means finances are about as tough as they have been in 4 years. Good News I have an interview today at a great international company for an excellent position with decent pay, opportunity for overtime & very good benefits. There's room for advancement & I have an inside track from my friend Izabella. Today's my second interview. Bad News Marcia is once again asking for a separation and it looks li…

  80. Everyone here seems to be thinking about a change of fleet. Camino is looking slowly at getting a better work truck, Balthazar is wanting that nifty Lincoln Flower car, Olds is looking for a car for Albert and a truck for his rental business, Dave 87 RS is thinking about a Cruze, Satty's wife is thinking about a Volvo, Roger wants a Truck, Ocean would be wanting another car if he had Jay Leno's garage, and I'm missing half the Forum. This thread could be pinned for awhile if Olds wants...but I would like to see if we could get a good discussion going on what we are all actually doing with changes to the C and G fleet. As for me...I have checked out and or driven a bunc…

They say flexibility is good. And, you know, they’re right. Sometimes, changing plans and “going with the flow” can be just as rewarding (if not more so) as carrying out the plans you’ve made…. At least, that’s what I’m counting on right now…. Since the COBRA issue (through my former employer) had not been resolved and the rental company, despite having the reservations for a couple weeks, ended up having only a Chevrolet Suburban (among a couple other cars I wasn’t interested in driving for just over a week) for me, I changed the dates of my road trip. Not too big of a deal … and, it may turn out better than I expected. Course, since our internet went down Tuesday …

As you are reading this, you will notice the animated GIF files in my signature and in my Avatar. I have had one or two complaints about them, in that they are slowing down connections, browsing, etc. Really, the number of complaints is like 0.00001 of the site's members, but perhaps there are those who find them annoying and haven't said anything. I understand members still have dial-up internet and my files would be a huge drain on their speed. My question is, should I keep them going? I don't have a poll set up because I think that'd be dumb, because there could be some sort of middle ground or compromise, instead of just "Yes" or "No."

I've probably met the most interesting person I'm going to meet while working at a parts store. Yesterday a gentleman came in to pick up an Optima battery he had ordered. He brought the core with him, a battery sold by us 6 years ago. Generally, a battery that old is not the prettiest thing. They range from dirty to downright scary. This one wasn't though, it looked practically new. I happened to comment on it and he told me its because it came out of a DeLorean. I like DMC 12s, so I asked him a bit about it. As it turns out, Patrick Shea and his father own not one, but three of them. One of them is a restored DeLorean, another was restored and converted into an accurat…

For example, here's one of the first designs posted in the Member Showcase section for 2006 (that have image links that still work, anyway) by budding C&G designer, member, and Designer's Guild Founding Member, American_Revolution2005 (this actually predicted the 2008 Magnum refresh in many ways -- way to go, man). With my habit of doing project cars, I am feeling the need to do my own body and paint work. The stumbling block for my projects always seems to be dealing with the bodyshop - either they don't get to it, don't get it, or cost way too much. I'm thinking that the answer may be to do it myself, so I'm looking for any and all input on the subject. I have a huge commercial compressor, but I need to convert it from 3-phase electric to 220 in order to run it here. There may be another alternative compressor in the mix as well (brand new and never used). Years ago, my Dad bought a Binks #7 paint gun but I'm not sure where that is now. This is one seriously awesome game. The graphics, the realism, the combat modes...and mostly, the scenario. In 1989, the Soviet Union mounts a full-scale invasion of the United States (Seattle, to be exact) and you're engaged in various campaigns to route the Russian advance. Its single and multiplayer and this is probably the first multiplayer game I'm going to take part in because its so neat. http://www.worldinconflict.com/ Downlod the demo and try it out or at least watch the trailers under DOWNLOADS. This is great.

  97. Start Stop, Affects the Starter? So I have also wondered this and another web site actually got an answer. More info available at Green Car Report but to quote their story, the end result of what happens with the starter system on new auto's is as follows: What follows is his explanation of those technologies. (1) The gear ratio from the starter-drive pinion to the flywheel ring gear is optimized to make the starter's motor turn more slowly. This can be done without materially changing the design of the transmission or flywheel at all on existing designs. Crucially, this reduces starter-motor speed (in RPM), since 90 percent of starter-motor brush wear…
