Just after Christmas Tammy started telling me that she was concerned about me driving the Vette with the roads getting icy. Since it was winter break, she wasn't using our truck (she works for a school district) so I was driving it to work and back. But, with school starting up again she didn't want me in the Vette on our roads. Too many, nutcases who can't drive is what she SAID she was concerned about. All of our cars were RWD and with 3 of them being show cars and one of them having an engine being rebuilt for drag racing, they were out. I leave for work at 11PM and come home at either 8 or 9 AM so I get 2 chances for icy roads. That left the Vette, our truck, and …

  10. Okay, I've had the '96 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham for a little over a month now and other than giving it a quick washing it once, I haven't done much to it - though it needs some TLC and soon. The black sierra grain leather is in pretty good shape for it's age, though it is dry and hard. I know it needs a good cleaning and then conditioning, and hopefully that will make it more appealing to the eye and maybe more supple. Anyone have some product suggestions and/or methods I should use to clean and condition the leather? I'm use to dealing with leather in new cars - so the methods & products I have I don't think will give me the results I want. Also, the car was …

Today I was cleaning the wheels on my car to avoid them getting pitted out from all the salt and sand that have been put on the roads lately, when I noticed dozens of little rust spots all over the side bodywork of the car. I freaked. I had spent so much time over the summer claying and waxing, trying to get it prepared for winter, and there were these tiny pin drop rust spots everywhere. I started running through my mind what could have caused it and decided it was probably all the salt they have been putting on the roads lately. So I took it into the garage and started wiping it down with Fast Wax to remove salt residue and found out it was also removing most of t…

I'll start: Buick: A Zeta sedan.. Right now, nothing's happening at Buick except talk. The Enclave might draw its own crowd, too, but it might not get enough talk. Cadillac: A&S v1 did it essentially, but the '08 CTS will really get them going Chevrolet: Camaro and Impala. Click image to enlarge Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier, 1961-1965 Story and photo by Bill Vance DaimlerChrysler often claims that Chrysler invented the minivan when it brought out its "Magic Wagons", the 1984 Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager. Such was not the case, however, as this was at least the third coming of the minivan. The original concept came from Volkswagen in 1950 when it installed its Beetle powertrain in what was essentially a metal box on wheels. Have fun with this thread, but be serious once in a while too. Jokes allowed but real suggestions appreciated. Now go to it C&G!

As I was sitting in Mickey D's this evening being a bad boy eating my quarter pounder, I watched to see who would leave the restaurant and hop in a gray, base model Honda Fit in the parking lot. It was an 80-year-old lady, 95 pounds at most, with a huge hairdo, accompanied by her p.i.m.p., a dude who was at least 80 and walking pretty slowly. Has the "Fit is Go!" ad campaign fallen on (nearly) deaf ears? Is every "hip, young" Japanese car doomed to congregate at Friday Night Bingo at the VFW? I find this phenomenon pretty amusing.

It's finally arrived. My vacation has started. Tomorrow, we head up to Puyallup for a Camaro and Corvette show and then on Sunday we start the drive down to Reno for Hot August Nights. The weather looks like it will cooperate so the Skylark will be topless most of the way down. Let's see, as far as I know we will have the following cars heading down in our group.. 1961 Corvette Convertible 1967 Camaro Convertible 1967 Camaro Convertible (not a reprint-we have two in the group) 1968 Camaro RS 1969 Camaro Coupe 1969 Camaro Z/28 (DZ302 car) 1971 Chevelle SS454 Convertible (brother's) 1972 Buick Skylark Convertible (ours) There should be more but I don't k…

Motoring Memories: Chevrolet Corvair Spyder Turbocharged Story and photo by Bill Vance The compact Corvair, which Chevrolet introduced in 1960, had an aluminum, horizontally-opposed (flat), air-cooled six-cylinder engine located in the rear, and four wheel independent suspension. This put it away out of the mainstream of an American auto industry dominated by big cars with front-mounted cast iron V8s driving through a solid rear axle. The Corvair was inspired by the top-selling German Volkswagen, and along with cars like the Ford Falcon, Chrysler (later Plymouth) Valiant and American Motors Rambler, was meant as an import fighter. But if the Corvair wasn't differ…

  80. Donna Harris Automotive News September 10, 2007 - 12:01 am EST General Motors says it is tossing the results of some recent customer satisfaction surveys because dealers tampered with the responses. That decision could cost offending dealerships big factory bonuses. GM surveys customers who buy new vehicles or submit factory warranty claims about their satisfaction with the dealership's performance. Dealerships that get high scores on those surveys and meet sales targets are eligible for quarterly cash incentives that can reach six figures. The satisfaction surveys are sent to customers' homes to discourage dealer influence. Customers respond by mail or onlin…

So I am tooling to work in my Tahoe and suddenly realized a startling fact - out of the 10 cars that were around me on a three lane highway - me and a Pontiac GP were the lone GM cars!!! 2 out of 10! Toyotas were everywhere - including a new white Turdra Doublecab! This is the heartland, and for this many Toyota's on the road in this area it just makes me sad. It doesn't help that the big GM dealers in this area are owned by the same company and they are all A-holes to deal with...but I hate to see this many Japanese cars here in what was a GM stronghold. Anyone else out there having the same problem?

It has been raining or sprinkling nonstop for the last couple days as a storm system has stalled out over eastern Iowa. So far we have 8 inches of rain here in the city and streets and streams are starting to flood. We have these teaming rooms in our office we call the cubes (see pic below) and one spots leaks by the air handling unit. We put a 10 gallon trash can up there to catch the water drip, but today it filled up so fast that the weight caused the bucket to crash through the top layer of drywall and water starting spilling into the insulation and causing the lower drywall to bubble. The can was too heavy to lift out, and being the tall one I was volunteered …

There was a time, at its height, that GM owned around 60% of the vehicle market in the United States. There was talk of government intervention to prevent GM from becoming too big. My question to the group is: Let's say it is 2010, and GM still commanded such huge market share. What would we be driving? What manufacturers would be present here? What would competitors' lineups look like, with GM holding such influence over the overall market?

My son received his first credit card offer in the mail this week. Imagine that! His first credit card -- at only age 6! It's from Citicorp -- one of the biggies. Since I moved within the last 8 months & this had our current, correct address - their records must be somewhat accurate. You can't tell me that they do ANY amount of background checking before sending out credit card offers what-so-ever. As a lender, wouldn't you want to, oh I don't know, check out income, credit report, etc before sending out a credit card offer? How can they say (with a straight face) that they are even halfway-serious about credit card security when they ma…
