Frisky's posts gave me an idea to do one related to something I want to do one day: cross country trip. So the rules are as follows: 1. You have to choose TWO cars: one NEW and one USED. 2. Cars have to be STOCK. 3. Budget for EACH of the cars is: New car: $40k. Used car: $20k. 4. Cars have to be comfortable and reliable enough to cross the United States from coast to coast at least twice (East to West and West to East). Have fun.

She got all fat, cranky and nauseous for NINE MONTHS just so you could pop out and bawl your little head off. Don't forget her special day this Sunday. Last week I drove my mom to Target to pick up a wedding gift for a relative. When we got out of the car, she looked at the fender of the car parked next to us and said "Look at that, it looks like somebody put sunglasses for a person with 3 eyes on that car." I said "That's a Buick Lucerne. Those are Buick portholes."

I haven't seen many movies lately but the last one I saw was "The Commuter." Blame it on bargain Tuesday. I looked at the reviews and they were lukewarm. I went to see it and enjoyed it. It was sort of like "Unstoppable" (2010). It was probably also like "The Taking of Pelham 123," which I never saw. Has anyone seen it? The review said that it was predictable. I disagree. I didn't know who it could be until the very end. In fact, it's one of those movies you have to analyze backwards, sort of like film noir "Body Heat," where the pieces all make sense when looked at in the rear view mirror. If you've seen it, did you feel that more fleshing out of the d…

Happy April Fools Day, folks. To kick off this thread, I don't have a really interesting sighting. Just an observation. I saw the current Lincoln Continental going down the freeway next to me, ultimately passing me as it was moving along to my left. The Continental's front grille makes that nice, vertical Lincoln statement. I once sat in one at the auto show. The interior is really nicely finished and the one at the show had these blue leather seats - nice ones, not tacky ones. Then, as the car pulls away from you, the effect sort of sputters. The rear deck lid tapers and the twin horizontal lamps are sort of wimpy compared to the statement the rest of th…

Hi everyone! I thought I'd share the good news that I am now ServSafe Certified meaning that I have been properly trained in food handling, food safety, and essential hygenic and sanitary practices to help ensure that whatever you eat that I have been involved in preparing and monitering will not be laden with dangerous contaminates; whether they be of physical, biological, or chemical nature. On my exam, which requires a 75% to pass, I attained a 91%, that, although not perfect, was the best score that has been seen in some time according to our McDonald's Marketing Director Denise Mansfield! I had heard that the exam was "so hard" and that a student who had been f…

I recently posted 'how the EV tax credit works', but I had it wrong. Want to correct the gist of it here. I was under the incorrect impression that the credit offset the amount you owed when you FILED. My wife [who was an economics major, has worked for a major investment house for a few decades, does our taxes and is one smart cookie] explained to me the credit goes against the TOTAL fiscal tax liability. This would include any check you write at filing time AND your taxes paid during the year, most of which came out of your salary. The bottom line as explained to me by this smart cookie is, anyone who is remotely fiscally sane (income high enough to get financ…

It probably ticks me off more than any other aspect of the current automotive industry. I HATE 4-doors! Why must every damn car have four freakin doors? I would choose any other bodystyle over the bland sedan, it is absolutely lame that so many cars are only offered in that oh-so-boring form. Over the past few decades, we have lost so many opportunities to have had interesting versions of cars that restricted to sedan-only form. Imagine what a b-body Impala SS coupe and convertible would have been like. Or more recently, a G8 Coupe ( or wagon , or convertible, or the ST) could have given me an option other than the nuclear one I've chosen. But no, all w…

Not much going on so far in the new year...was out in the backyard after sunset and spotted what appeared to be a CUV w/ full width (multi-segment) headlights drive by... bright white HID...appeared to be something midsize and aerodynamic, didn't look like aftermarket lighting (not an off-road light bar). it was too dark and far away to see exactly what it was...reminded me of the old Mercury Villager minivan but something modern...any idea what I saw? Was not a a Rivian..;)

Whoa, almost 4 days away from this place, how times flies when you're having fun, and when you're not. I was on vacation this week, and I needed it, I had been stressing at work and not sleeping well. I had wanted to do something other than sit home for the whole week, which would have been counterproductive to the very definition of the word "vacation", and camping is something I enjoy. The weather forecast wasn't promising, however, for the Poconos Mountains. Checking The Weather Channel site every day yielded a small window of tent-camping opportunity on Thursday/Friday, so I took the chance. And it was beautiful. Everybody I talked to up there said the entire w…

...so I'm talking to a guy I know who runs a MINI Cooper S and was at a track day at Nelson Ledges, which is up by Cleveland. Anyhow, kid in an Acura Integra comes up to him before the open track event and says in broken english "you...very old man...you fat...have very...very slow car...you see me...you get the phuc out of my way...you hear old man..." About ten laps into the session the MINI driver laps the modified Integra. About antoehr 7 laps and the MIMI laps the Integra again. After 5 more laps, the MINI passes the Integra to lap it a third time. After the hot lapping session the guy I know goes up to the kid and says, in mock broken english... "What's wr…

Ah yes, winter. Time for comfort food. My grandmother used to make this simple, hearty dish to warm us up after being out in the cold: 40 ounce can butter beans/dried limas, rinsed 1 pound tube mild sausage, formed into bitesize patties 1 medium onion, chopped 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup ketchup preheat oven to 400 place sausage bites into skillet with enough water to cover completely, cover pan and bring to boil add onion to pan, cook sausage and onion until water evaporates and sausage starts to brown drain fat and place sausage and onion in baking dish with rinsed beans, add ketchup and brown sugar and mix all ingredients together bake at 400 for about 30 min…

For the longest time, pretty much the last 2 years straight, since graduating with my $$$ Mechanical Engineering degree from Villanova (worth every cent, honestly, even if technically...), I've been "trying to figure it out". Always wanted to be IN the car industry, but could never figure out how/where/with what, and even things like sales if brought up would get "no..." reactions. Trying to figure it out meant graduating without the selection of job offers lined up, and so forth. For the last 2 years of school, I had been interning every break from school with a home builder at the beach in Delaware. It was always fun, I knew what I was doing and took charge, once full …

Describe a car that you think would be desirable? What would be your perfect next car. How big would it be? How would it be powered? Describe it's overall shape and its interior and the color you would choose for both the inside and outside of the car. Which bodystyle would you choose. Feel free to invent body styles that still do not exist. And of course, how much chrome would you like on your car, and where?

Although the snow let up in intensity and ended altogether hours ago, school has still been cancelled for tommorow! :sign0200: Just over 24" of snow fell on the area late last night and earlier today. Westchester schools announced county-wide closings for Monday by late afternoon, but New York City Schools remained open until the past hour when the decision to cancel classes was made (I attend school in the Bronx). Roads are still a mess and trains will be on a limited schedule tommorow due to the storm. Since most students at my school commute from Westchester by train, I'm pretty sure that's what warranted the closing. I'm especially happy because I've put off…

I like watching "Good Times". It's a pretty cool show. But for the life of me I cannot stand J.J. Evans. He's so damn irritating in every way. His voice, his clothes, his face, his over-inflated ego and the worst thing of all, his damned catchphrase: "Dynomite!" I just want to strangle him. Mind you, I don't have anything aganist Jimmie Walker, the actor who played him but I just hate the character J.J. Any TV characters make you sick?

It's rolling around to my original hire date (July 3rd), and I still have 2 weeks vacation time coming that I have to use before then, or I lose it, per written company policy. So I took next week and the last week of the month, which means I'll be off one week, work two, then off another in June. I earned this time, and I think I need it, although there are no big plans. Yesterday, my boss pulls me aside and says if I "want" to, he can make arrangements with the BIG boss that I can take one week off, then for the second week, I can take the vacation pay but come to work, or I can push the second week off past my hire date, which means I will have 4 weeks vacation comi…

* Hard to believe I've finished my 36 sessions of Cardiac Rehab for my 11/11/2011 open heart surgery; last session was 04/13/2012. I plan to return to the facility via their monthly fee, but I have to find a new job first. Wouldn't mind some other dreams/goals coming true, either...just sayin'. Some people have likened CR to watching paint dry, but not for me. It made me a bit more "lean'n'mean". More importantly, it was fun, thanks to the nursing staff & fellow rehabbers. The Year Is: 1978 The year is 1978 and you're at the dealership service department. The service advisor breaks the bad news to you that your last foray in to the back country has terminally wounded your Omega and there's nothing they can do. You face a dilemma; you enjoy camping and back country exploring, but every vehicle you've used so far has not been up to the task. A Jeep CJ and is too small for you to comfortably camp in, a full sized pickup with a slide in camper is too cumbersome for the trails you like to frequent and the hatchbacks and wagons you have been using lack ground clearance and traction. After browsing the brochures and talking to the salesm…

Spent several hours this afternoon at the annual B-J event...was a sunny 75 degree day in dusty Scottsdale. Indoors, the new car displays from Ford, Chrysler, and GM were impressive--- lots of new Mustangs in a variety of trim levels--GTs, Shelbys, Boss 302s, and aftermarket tuners versions....really liked the MKZ, first I'd seen in person..nice interior, really interesting exterior design, esp. the rear. Loved the various SRT Mopies (Challenger, Charger, 300, JGC)...saw the new Viper for the first time, very impressed. At the GM stand, the new Silverado looked quite good in longbed crew cab form in a taupe color. The Hot Wheels Camaro SS was fun. Chec…

Well as most of you know, I live in Delaware, but I don't buy my new cars here, I go to Elkton, Maryland and buy my cars from Anchor Pontiac. They are a great dealership that treats you like family and they go the extra mile. Oh from where I live I can be in 3 different states in about 15 minutes, so going to Maryland is no big deal. Maybe we could use this list if our C&G members find themselves out of state and in need of a reliable dealership to go to. Cheers! My dealer's website: http://www.anchorpontiac.com/en_US/

Phone companies. Going to the dogs. I swear. I just spent 52 minutes to an MCI call center in Argentina. I ingratiated myself somewhat by speaking entirely in Spanish, which they fully understood. This is my 6th call to MCI since May and a credit has been issued against the final bill, though 1 call back in May should have sufficed. In short: - called MCI to disconnect on May 17th - had to stay in my place 1 month longer, so I called on May 11th to cancel the disconnect...I thought that 6 days prior was enough time - was told that their "system" did not EASILY allow for order cancellations/adjustments once placed because of the fact that they don't own the lines, …

Backfire #4 - Super Cars Aren't So Super March 5th, 2015 Blake Noble explains his recent and controversial OppositeLock editorial on why he isn't hyped up on hypercars. These antique cars are true works of art .. Visitors to Rockefeller Center recently were intrigued, bemused or simply mystified by what looked like a bunch of old cars painted silver. But the cars constituted a major work by internationally acclaimed artist Nam June Paik called "32 cars for the 20th century: play Mozart's Requiem quietly." Actually, there were only 16 of the 32 cars in Paik's work on display at Rockefeller Center. They appeared with another major Paik work, "Transmission," an outdoor laser presentation. Organized by Public Art Fund on behalf of RCPI Landmark Properties and Tishman Speyer Properties, owners of Rockefeller Center, the exhibition expose…

So Tuesday night, I'm Christmas shopping for the wife and I'm about to leave the parking lot of the store I'm in. A black Toyota Highlander goes through the intersection and I pull out to the left (behind it). Suddenly, this dumb woman stops, throws the damn thing into reverse and boom! Takes out my front bumper. Pulled it completely off. *sigh* While waiting for the officer to show up, she conveys her wish to just write me a check once I get an estimate. Apparently in order to keep her monthly premium down, her deductible is outrageous, something like $1000. So I tentatively agree, especially after she's honest with the officer about whose fault it was. Well u…

the onion is always good for a laugh. PENSACOLA, FL—Harold Enderby's friends say that when he first saw the Navy's televised announcement that the Flight Demonstration Squadron, better known as the Blue Angels, would be holding open tryouts for the first time in its history, the lifelong aviation buff turned to his fellow sanitation workers at Doug's Dugout Bar-N-Grill and said, "Mark my words—I'm going to be a Blue Angel if it's the last thing I do." And this Sunday, that dream came true for an incredible 43 seconds, as Enderby got the chance to fly the famed Blue Angels' F/A-18 Hornet directly into the tarmac during the first day of the Navy's most dramatic—and colo…

I've had my border collie for about 6 years now--we got her when she was about 6-12 months old from a shelter. She was extremely sick and severely underweight when we got her. Today, she's a healthy, happy, active girl that I can't imagine my life without. I've done a good deal of reading up about her breed, and most things fit. However, every now and then there's a question I have about a behavior she exhibits. Most recently, her behavior towards people diving in the pool. Anyone have border collie experience?

So I picked this album up, and I think it's an awesome effort. I suppose I'm a bit biased, because I'm a huge Kelly Hansen fan because of his previous band Hurricane, and his stint in Unruly Child, as well as being involved in a bunch of tribute albums. Jeff Pilson's involvement as bassist, and backing vocals only seals the deal. How about the rest of you? Awesome effort? Or is it nothing without Lou?

Hey everyone, I have been thinking about this a little lately, and I wanted to see what you all thought about it. Am I way off track?! It seems to me as though Toyota is paralleling GM of the 70's and 80's. And by that I mean, cutting corners - doing things cheaper, riding along on a reputation instead of producing the product to maintain the reputation? It seems like Toyota (and I've thought this since before this whole recall situation) is cutting corners a lot. I don't spend too much time in Toyota's, and I personally strongly dislike the company - mainly because their products all lack excitement or driving dynamics (I guess I can't say all, my experience is v…

Ok, so I'm browsing Ebay for ideas on a classic car restoration... So far, I'm looking at '66-'70 Eldorado (top of list) Chevy Biscayne Olds 442 or holiday coupe Also, the Corvair caught my eye once I looked at pics of the engine...... how is it mounted? I cant seem to make sense of how the engine sits or how it is configured.... all I see is a pulley right in the middle with the shaft runing into the floor.... it seems like the engine is under the floor??? I also found one on Ebay that is Turbocharged????? did anyone know they made those? http://cgi.ebay.ca/Chevrolet-Corvair-Turbo...1QQcmdZViewItem

Whoa, Melvin, whoa. I'm not talking about a Piss-poor-Prius here. I'm talking about cars that were one part European (bodies, etc.) and one part American (powertrain). (Yes, the Allante counts.) Like, for example... 1960s ISO Grifo: 1963 ISO Rivolta: 1962 Apollo 3500GT: 1968 Bizzarrini GT America: 1968 DeTomaso Mangusta: 1971 DeTomaso Pantera: 1958 Facel Vega HK500: 1964 Gordon-Keeble GT: 1966 Jensen Interceptor III: More coming in next post.

Hey, I am at a crossroads, I am not sure of what I should do. I was looking at a Cobalt SS moonroof without the Supercharger. Now the car clocks in at approx $475 / month and is somewhere in the range for the lease payment on my 05 RSX. They said they "should" be able to buy out the lease on the RSX and I could buy the Cobalt. Does anyone have any opinion on this? I kinda like the RSX more but getting service is hard because of the limited dealers around and when you do get service there is still a hassle with getting parts. It took them 2 months for a strut and I don't see things getting better with the RSX being discontinued. I guess the major question is, is the Cobal…

tonight, Vikings / Cowboys so the Vikes hold a 10-3 lead late into the 4th quarter. Dull, but solidly played game. You don't care if J.T. I suck again, er, JT O'Sullivan gives the game away because he does suck, you expect it, and its JUST PRESEASON FOOTBALL. Ok, well, he didn't lose the game, but the cowboys get the ball for the final drive and march down and score a touchdown with like 15 seconds left. that makes the score 10-9. NOW, what next? Obvious. Go for two points to either win or lose the game. Let's get it over with and go home. NOT EXACTLY. in a strange twist of fate....the Tuna (Bill Parcells) decides to kick the extra point and go into OT. …

Did you know that Oldsmobile pioneered the use of turbo-chargers in production cars? It was the 1962 Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire Sport Coupe. http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/bv/...f85_jetfire.htm 1963 Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire Turbo

My friend just crashed his Mazda, and now end up with a G6 rental. He was telling me he has a V6, so I'm suspecting it's a 2007 with the sport package, i.e. 17" wheels. So if I swap my 16s on and take the 17s, will they catch us and make us pay??

I got a stone chip on my windshield, and it's noticeable and expanding. I went to a windshield place last time, and the guy said he can do it, and claim insurance for me. I'm too scared to actually deal with the insurance, who might raise my premiums if I have any claims. The cost of fixing it was like 70 bucks. Anyone had claims like these and end up getting their premium raised?

The Beginning It was Fall of the year 2004, as I looked for my first car. I really wanted a Fiero. I looked for one left and right. I knew it was a longshot, but I would constantly dream of it and had hopes it would become a reality. Soon enough, the idea was shot down by my parents, only after agreeing to it earlier. I wasn't happy, needless to say, but my search continued into the Winter. My dad would always buy the weekly Trade book, looking for deals. Soon enough, we came across an ad for a 1995 Grand Am GT with a manual transmission for $1000. My thoughts were "Atleast it's a manual". I wasn't overly enthusiastic, but I thought it would be a decent car. We called t…

I figured I would just start one thread and just post to it on the Fridays I remember. I see I only posted one previous #RacingFriday thread with Ken Gushi & Tyler McQuarrie so if the admins don't mind merging it would be cool. So, anyway, onto today's post. In the video below you can see a near miss at 140mph. The driver exhibits some real skill but, as far as I can tell, he's an amateur (he may want to reconsider that). The video hosted at the link is a trimmed version of the good parts but I also include the link to the full You Tube video where the driver gives his POV.

Why is it that trains back in the 30s and 40s and I think even up through the 60s had a streamlined body that has now been reverted to a boxy, rectangular one? It just seems odd that the trains that influenced cars like the Lincoln Zephyr due to their sculpting and aerodynamics are now just rolling blocks that really don't have much in the way of design to them. Did this happen because trains lost their importance so train companies didn't want to waste the money "designing" them or hiring people to design them? The same thing has happened with buses. ISU has a few old GMC buses running around that have some curves and aerodynamics to them compared to the Gillig and O…

I guess I'm kind of picky when it comes to coffee. Certain Tim Hortons make it right, and others I've actually brought it back to the counter and told them to make another one that's not burnt. I notice that sometimes I'm drinking the same coffee as others, they don't mind and I do. On the other hand I'm no connisseur either, I won't buy Starbucks coffee (which is just overly bitter anyways). The coffee here at my building sucks. I asked my boss one day how the coffee was when he was drinking it, and he said "Hot and brown". I guess those are the only nice things he could find to say. Somehow a description of coffee that would also fit poop kind of bothers me. So... a…

Well guys, this morning I had one of those moments where I was about to pull my hair out, and then my little girl (now 1 year old) did just the thing to set my day perfectly all right. I was running late, Amy (the wife) was also running late, which meant I had to pull bath duty with squirt. I'm kinda cursing under my breath, and all in all griping about having to give her a bath when she looks up at me from the tub and points at me and says "Da da". After that I just kinda had to sit in the floor and everything didn't matter from there on.... I just sat there and played with her in her tub with a grin on her face, just watching her splash around and blabber this and t…
