  1. July 4, 2009 - 12:01 am ET MILAN (Reuters) -- CEO Sergio Marchionne's immediate product plans for Chrysler Group could be limited to weeding out weaker models and tweaking prices as he gears up to launch new designs within two years. Marchionne, who also heads Fiat S.p.A., took the wheel at the struggling U.S. car maker in June after sealing a deal for the Italian company to take a 20 percent stake in return for getting Chrysler back to health with the help of Fiat technology. He said on June 26 he hoped to have "at least a road map from a product standpoint" in 14 days, and on Wednesday said he wanted to decide what to do with Chrysler's Dodge and Fiat's Alfa Rom…

  2. The chief executive of Chrysler says the automaker's recovery will be gradual but the company is making progress following its speedy government-led bankruptcy. CEO Sergio Marchionne (MAR-key-own-ee) said in a speech to a Washington think tank that his new leadership team is "not planning miracles at Chrysler" but is committed to creating "rapid change" at the Michigan automaker. Marchionne's Fiat Group SpA owns 20 percent of Chrysler with an opportunity for more and was put in charge of rescuing the automaker by the U.S. government. Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy protection in June. He told the Peterson Institute for International Economics that Chrysler broke even …

DIANA T. KURYLKO | Automotive News Posted Date: 11/22/05 Mercedes-Benz has decided to keep the 26-year-old G-Class SUV in production after 2006 because of solid demand for the massive vehicle. The 5,545-pound G-Class, formerly named the Gelaendewagen, is based on a military vehicle. It was launched in 1979, and was scheduled to disappear in the 2007 model year, when a new full-sized SUV is launched. "We found there is still demand for it," a Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman said last week. U.S. sales totaled 1,491 units in 2004 and are running at a slightly slower pace this year. Sales through October totaled 1,088, down 8.4 percent from the year-ago period. …

  5. According to Stuart Schorr, Senior Manager of Sales, Service and Dealer Communications, Chrysler minivan sales may be down, but retail demand is actually stronger. His article in The Firehouse (blog) indicates that, compared with their long-wheelbase brethren, the Chrysler has increased retail sales by over 75%, while the Dodge has gone up over 25%. He wrote, "The total reduction in Chrysler minivan sales is solely because of planned fleet reductions and not any consumer trend. In fact consumers are demanding more minivans." The moderately popular and less-expensive short-wheelbase minivans were dropped when Chrysler and Dodge moved to their 2008 models. Source: Allpa…

Came across this set of photos today. Here is Miss Belvedere at Ultra-One in Hackettstown, NJ on June 6, 2008. Note partial exterior cleanup of fender, part of the door, and half of the upper and lower grille sections. Side view of the car. A closeup of the cleaned up passenger fender and tire. The fender seems to have survived fairly well. The chrome on the vent window frame looks great, with only one or two pits in the metal. The gas tank on the left looks like it survived and could probably be reused if the car was restored. The leaf springs, as seen on the right, have brittled and snapped. This is true for both sides. Supposing I get the money and (want to spend it on such a thing) decide an upgrade to the wheels/tires of my Breeze, I was wondering if Chrysler's "Genesis II" aluminum wheels would fit the Breeze. These wheels were used on some SE Intrepids, and Sport, LE, ES, ES AWD (1999-2000 ES) minivans. I especially like their appearance, and they are 16" in diameter, so they aren't anything outrageously big. What they look like: And look slightly similar to:

After learning that General Motors would be disbanding its High Performance Vehicle Operations team to focus on less performance-oriented projects, our thoughts naturally turned towards Ford's SVT and Chrysler's SRT groups. Ford has gone on record stating that the SVT program will continue on in its current capacity and now Chrysler has announced that it will continue to develop SRT versions of its volume sellers. He is widely respected, has many years of China experience and played a major role in making General Motors a success in China. But Chrysler management in Detroit will have to give him free rein to operate. GM made a big mistake a couple of years ago when it diluted Murtaugh's decision-making authority. Chrysler also will have to give him some help in the form of the right models to sell. During his long run as GM's top man in China, which began in 1996, Murtaugh demonstrated a deep under…

Chrysler's Jeep brand cooked up a plan to dangle a Commander SUV from 1,200 feet above its Chelsea proving grounds and then release it -- counting on four parachutes to ease its landing. At the same time, seven skydivers would drop from another helicopter, then pile into the SUV and drive over to a phalanx of media. The photo op was designed to announce Jeep's involvement with Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit effort to encourage Americans to send cards and packages to overseas soldiers. In addition, the Pentastar will get a redesign to update its look. I mean early reviews said it had soft touch materials, but more recent ones said everything is as hard as a rock. Does anyone own or been inside one that knows? It's been assumed that the Fiat 500 would be one of the vehicles Chrysler plans to market in the U.S., but according to a the Wall Street Journal, it may have more than a subcompact up its sleeve. Reviews: 2008 Dodge Avenger Avenger will compete in a tough market segment, going up against leaders like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, as well as the newly-improved Malibu . It will be a tough fight. The new sedan may slip in a few categories, but it definitely stands out on the design front. And for many potential buyers, we think that will more than overcome its shortfalls. The Car Connection --- For all its newness, the Avenger assumes much the same place in the automotive sky as the Stratus.
