Detroit Media Reaction The lead headline on the Detroit Free Press’s Web site this morning asks: “How long can the strike last?” In theory, the paper says, the answer is: a long time. The UAW has a strike fund that could keep workers off the job for a year, the newspaper reports. “But the frightening effects a national strike would have on UAW members, their households and the many other businesses and individuals who rely on GM for their livelihoods likely would come much sooner.” In the paper’s main editorial on the opinion page, the headline reads: “It’s hard to see any winners in strike.” “Coupled with state government’s impending meltdown for lack…

  5. We've known for some time that both Tesla and General Motors would soon be reaching the 200,000 sales mark for electrics, meaning that $7,500 tax credit would begin phasing out. Yesterday, we reported Tesla cut prices on their 2019 model year vehicles to soften the blow. But what about GM? A source told Reuters that GM hit the 200,000 model milestone during the fourth quarter of last year - most likely happening in December. This begins the 15-month phase-out which will see the credit drop to $3,750 in April, $1,875 in October, and then disappear next April. GM declined to comment about this, but we're likely to find out later this morning as the company will be anno…

One of those options happens to be a 4.5L Diesel V8 that was planned to go into their pickups five years ago. Steve Kiefer, GM's vice president of global powertrain tells Automotive News that GM is considering dusting off that engine and slip it into their new trucks. "We are looking closely at diesel entrees in that segment. In fact, I heard the terms 'dust off' that 4½-liter at one point. That is certainly one of the options. Clearly, we have a portfolio of diesel engines," said Kiefer. Source: Auto…

Over the years however, as GM’s market share eroded and the Detroit car company began fighting against the tides of red ink, it began selling off its shares in Isuzu until the alliance came quietly to an end. In 2006, it sold off its last 7.9 percent stake in the company for a reported $300 million dollars in order to fund restructuring efforts that were badly needed at the time. History is about to repeat itself then, as General Motors is reportedly in talks with Isuzu Motors to form a new alliance. This past…

The program, called BT1 is part of a larger $7.7 billion investment in GM's plants over the next four years. The BT1 program includes an electric truck for GMC and an electric SUV for Cadillac for the 2023 model year. But before that happens, in 2021 a low volume BT1 pickup will start production under a different brand while a performance truck follows in 2022, and then an electric SUV in 2023. Anybody read the interview that Motor Trend published on p.90 of their June 2006 issue? They spell it out in no uncertain terms. He is throwing in the towel on the US market, hoping to just tread water, and pinning all his future hopes on GM salvation in China! That's why we are getting 2nd-class, ho-hum models, 'cause he wants to push the brand in China and make lotsa moolah! Although he cut his pay in half, it still is $1.1 MILLION dollars! And what about the rest of the management tier? The burden of 2.5 retirees per each US employee, with full benefits won't go away with a switch to a different money market. If the thinking is that China is their star…

Rick Wagoner's 31-year career may fall victim to the mistakes of the industry and of his own making, even if General Motors Corp. survives. The GM chief executive officer prompted scrutiny of his record by asking for a government bailout to keep the Detroit automaker in business. Now, his departure may be a necessary condition of any federal rescue, business leaders and lawmakers say. "Management needs to be replaced," said Robert Crandall, former chairman and CEO of American Airlines parent AMR Corp. "The fact is that the management as a whole has had lots of opportunities to fix this. They haven't." Mr. Wagoner has run the world's largest automaker for the past…

  68. General Motors is rethinking its approach in the automotive marketplace. A number of conflicting issues (auto sales growth are slowing, stricter standards for emissions and safety; autonomous vehicles, changes in how vehicles are owned, and trying to return more cash to stockholders) have the company making some drastic changes in an effort to cut captial spending. Speaking with Reuters, a number of GM executives said they are undertaking the most extensive overhaul of its vehicle development process in many years. The end goal is to design their global lineup with a few building blocks and spreading the costs of engineering and research over many more vehicles. Also,…

This is in contrast to the Amazon Alexa capability found in some new Ford vehicles starting this year. Consumer demand has forced the manufacturers’ hands however. Google will…

Word is that G. Richard Wagoner will be a guest today at 10:30AM on "Face the Nation". Our failed CEO has been making the rounds of newspapers, radio, and television at a frantic pace. Mr. Steve Harris, the PR director brought back to save the day, has pulled out all stops in a desparate effort to build goodwill, and offset the stampede of calls for his boss to resign, or be fired. In my opinion, General Motors would be far better served if "Red Ink Rick" were instead simply made to "Face the Music"!

Say I wanted a telescopic wheel or a folding front bucket seat outside of an option group. It's almost as it they are saying "take it or leave it." Are any juicy new platforms or extensive face lifts due in 2008 or 2009? Good Gawd. Are you feeling the same way - kind of ambivalent about the upcoming model year?

The trio earns either poor or marginal ratings in side tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The newspaper reported that the shares were sold to Bank of America, a key lender to Kerkorian..
