It was from this week's Fifth Gear, and you can download it from BitTorrent or see it on YouTube in a few days, but here's the text and picture online preview. Basically they crashed a '92 Volvo 940 wagon into an '04 Renault Modus supermini. The Volvo weighs 700+ more lbs and is 40" longer than the Renault... On TV Fifth Gear conducts a fascinating world's first crash-test and even the experts can't predict the outcome. Where are you safer - a big old car, or a small new one? We crash a 15 year old Volvo 940 estate, for many people the epitome of a solid and safe family car, into a 3 year old Renault Modus, notable as the first small car to earn a maximum 5 Star safety…

We've all seen car crash tests, so here is a video of locomotive crash tests. Turn your volume down if you don't wish to hear cheesy disco music These locomotive crash tests were performed in the 1980s after a series of fatal (to the engineer) crashes. The DOT wanted to see how different cab designs reacted in various crash scenarios. They were also testing for something called "climbing"... that is when the impacting vehicle climbs up and over the impacted vehicle. one of the results of these tests where the "safety cabs" we see on virtually all modern freight locomotives. Apparently it made such a difference to the safety of the crew, that when older locomotive…

Yeah uh huh so we closed early at work today. When I got home and came in from the garage downstairs, I heard a snapping and cracking, and it felt cool in the downstairs family room. Apparently, someone shot out my sliding door glass. Pieces were still slowly falling out onto the floor. Glass was thrown clear across the room, and there was a hole about 1.5 inches across where the projectile came through. The door was still locked, nothing is missing, so I don't believe it was an attempted break-in. Small game season is in right now... so I'm thinking it was some idiot with a gun... or it could have been kids being little a-holes, too. My homeowner's insurance compa…

I was wondering what would be an interesting small-block or big-block to drop into an 89 Dodge Dakota? It is that old Dakota Sport I found a while a go. It needs work but I am trying to give my teacher ideas for a custom Dakota. For our next school project, he wants to rice up a Civic so I need something that could turn him away from that. What motors would fit? I was thinking something bigger than a 350. A 454 would be interesting but would it fit? One could be easily pulled from an older pickup around here. Just give me suggestions as to what may fit or what would work nicely. GM motors as well as Mopar suggestions would both work. My idea is to lower it, rear disc brak…

Holy bajesus what a day! The breeze finally died...radiator leak, water pumped shot, blown head gaskets...$1500 in repairs. My dad feels that it's not worth it so he's donating it. People came to look at the Saturn and loved it. They are having a mechanic come and look at it on Saturday. So we went to the Chrysler dealer to check out the Sebring for my mom. We love it. It's looks so much better in person then in photos and the price is great. 07 Touring with 8 way power drivers seat for under $21k My dad talked to the dealer and he said to come back tomarrow because there's gonna be a huge memorial day weekend sale and the dealer has to move 50 cars. OK, this analogy popped on the top of my mind for some reason: Chevrolet -> A jug of water. Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen. The necessities of everyone. Pontiac -> A nice bottle of beer, chilled to the right temperature. What GM is basically doing, by giving Pontiac rebadge Chevys, GM is pouring water into beer. It's like... who wants to drink diluted beer? Beer has H2O naturally in it (platform sharing), but don't pour it in directly! :alcoholic: :P And here's another one: Toyota -> A bottle of methanol wine. At the moment you're drinking it, it tastes just like wine, but eventually it'll make you blind and kill you.

Hi all, After gauging the intrest on my 05 mustang GT and with some of my end of the year improvments to my finances I have decided to deffinetly go ahead and sell my car. I will be clear between 4000-6500 selling it via a private sale after paying off the ballance of the loan. I have an additional 3000 in savings that I can put twards a new car. I will be getting a late 90's early 2000s Jeep in the price range of 5-6k. I don't drive very much anymore and neither does my girlfriend milage wise but we both travel on the weekends and a jeep would be a lot more practical for our active lifestyles, plus right now I have to park on the street and while I can drive my mus…

Last night me and my two buddies went to a frat and then we headed over to a house party that was rather far away (about 20 mins walking from where I live). Anyways, when we got to the house this guy that we didn't know before gave us some cups and told us to say that we paid for them. So, my buddies got a cup of beer and then it ran out after I only got about a third of a cup, so we just kinda stood around and watched beer pong. Anyways, the guy that lives there got back about 10 mins later and asked me and one of my friends if we paid for the cups. We told him we did, and then he wanted us to show him who we paid. So we walked around the house and couldn't find the gu…

I think this might be my first "yes/no" poll. I like to put the window down, when going over a narrow bridge or driving in a narrow drive between 2 buildings, so I can hear the echo of my engine's sound. I got into this by listening to the awesome sound of a small-block Olds Rocket V8. As for my current car(s), I have to admit that the Regal sounds really hushed for its high mileage. Do you make it a point to listen to your engine's sounds echoing back at you?

I don't know about anyone else, but we have had quite a winter so far. Usually you don't see much in the way of snow or ice around here before Christmas, but so far it has snowed much of the week and we had two days of freezing rain / sleet that left about 2 inches of ice on the ground. It iced again last night and now it has changed over to snow; I had to go out last night and scraping it off my windows was a task since it was just a thick glazing over everything. We used to have really bad winters like this in the first few years of the 90s, then it was mild for the rest of the decade until about 2003 when we've been having monster snowstorms and earlier snow. A cou…

Ok, so I rarely use my card, no real need to, cash gets things paid off immediately, but on Monday I had a work related meeting ( a whole different story) and had to dress professionally, so I went to the mall and bought $100 in new clothes so I could make the meeting on time, dressed decently. Tuesday comes around and I'm running low on gas, so I pull up to the pump, slide the card (I had used the last of the cash in my pocket on Chinese food) and it gets declined. So I check my online statement and it says that due to "high risk" activity, my card has a block on it. Today I finally got around to calling, apparently that $100 (which came nowhere close to putting me ov…

Have you seen the new Orville Redenbacher microwavable popcorn commerical? If not, check it out here first: It's creepy! This guy has been dead since 1995, yet the company decided to resurect him for their new ad??? He looks fake - I watched E!'s "Talk Soup" show yesterday and they said it was a combination of live action, Orville's head & lots of CG effects. But I think it's creepy. Especially in the beginning of the commercial, I think all the people in it think it's creepy to see a dead guy boppin' to an MP3 player and making popcorn- just look at their faces (especially the white guy with glasses)! And best of all, at the end of the commercial he says…

CROSSOVERS 1 2
by regfootball- 51 replies

Crossovers, one of the most lucrative and busting new segments ever. Automakers are rushing to fill their lineups with all sorts of them. Size, price, etc. They are starting to establish their own design type. They are replacing fuel sucking BOF SUV's. The big wave is just starting, yet, I am now tired of them all. Is this a fad? Or will most vehicles sold in the future be crossovers? How do you feel? I'm already kinda sick of them.

I was thinking about the so-called crossovers I dig (*those that are basically semi-tall cars and don't remotely look like SUVs)...those one could easily lower and drive like a sedan, wagon (which the thing basically is) or fastback. I see my faves going in this order: 1. Ford Flex-great for family, hanging out with the bros, or a complete date (if you know what I mean!)...looks are cool and inspiring. And it's all-American (sans D3 platform originiating with Volvo) 2. Infiniti EX-it's basically a G35/37 hatch. Just find a way to lower it and it's on. 3. Toyota Venza-yeah, it's partially based on the evil Camry, but I love the exterior. Looks like another gre…

One of the highlights of the car hobby for me is the Ocean City, MD Spring cruise-in. It is a spectacular event, a Spring break-out of every kind of hot rod, muscle car, and everything in between automotive. I just reserved a room at the Rehoboth Beach Guest House (closest I could get to OC, everything's full there by now), so I'm set. This here pic is one I spliced together. The B&W shot to the left was taken in 1948, the color shot- this past weekend. I didn't notice either mark until I got home and downloaded my pics and compared them to the older shots, or I would have investigated it close up. It's the same location and the same stone block, right in the middle of nowhere. Kinda spooky- I could see if the fresh marks were in '48, but vice-versa; IDK. Must mean something.

Cuba to cut 500,000 gov't workers, reform salaries AP Cuba announced Monday it will cast off at least half a million state workers by early next year and reduce restrictions on private enterprise to help them find new jobs — the most dramatic step yet in President Raul Castro's push to radically remake employment on the communist-run island. Castro suggested during a nationally televised address on Easter Sunday that as many as 1 million Cuban workers — about one in five — may be redundant. But the government had not previously laid out specific plans to slash its work force, and the speed and scope of the coming cutbacks were astounding. Cuba's official work force is…

Shortly after Castro took over in 1959, the U.S. slapped a trade embargo on Cuba. That means the country has imported few cars in the past five decades. But ever-resourceful Cubans have managed to keep the same vehicles on the streets since the 1950s, making the country the world's biggest open-air car museum. I know a Pontiac when I see one!

For those who are not aware, the Cummins 4BT the same engine as what's found under the hood Ram pickups, but with two cylinders lopped off. Many people like to swap them into their full sized vehicles because they can net you over 20 MPG, like these guys: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=392580 http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forum/general-discussion/duramax-forum/engine-swaps/374390-4bt-cummins-turbo-diesel-05-silverado-pictures.html So I was thinking, what if instead of the six cylinders usually used for base engines in full sized trucks, GM were to use something like this? They already have the 4JJ1 4 cylinder diesel in the Holden Colorado and peopl…

I subscribed to Collectible Automobile magazine for years. They do a nice job with their photos and the info in the text. Now I just buy the issues containing vehicles I am really interested in. . I snagged the current issue yesterday off the magazine rack. It features full-sized Oldsmobiles from 1971-'76. Some nice pix accompanying the article, including a '72 98 Regency just like the car I had up into 1978. Also some really nice pix of a '56 DeSoto Fireflite.

Since it was pointed out that I might have a strong bias towards GM products, it made me think about what my first choice for each of the respective vehicle segments would be and how many of those segments GM might win. B-Segment (subcompacts, super mini, city car) - None of the above really since the VW Up! isn't here, I haven't driven the new Spark yet, I didn't like the current Spark. Sonic if that counts in this segment and I'm forced to pick. C-Segment (compacts) - Mazda 3 C-Segment (Luxury Compact) - C-Class D-Segment (mid-size) - Chrysler 200c (I know it's not the journalists favorite, but I like the powertrain and interior) D-Segment (Luxury Mid-size) -…

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston resident Kelli Davis was in for a surprise when her daughter brought home some routine paperwork at the start of school this fall. Davis signed the form and then handed it to her daughter for the eighth-grader's signature. "I just assumed she knew how to do it, but I have a piece of paper with her signature on it and it looks like a little kid's signature," Davis said. Her daughter was apologetic, but explained that she hadn't been required to make the graceful loops and joined letters of cursive writing in years. That prompted a call to the school and another surprise. West Virginia's largest school system teaches cursive, but only in…

Phone companies. Going to the dogs. I swear. I just spent 52 minutes to an MCI call center in Argentina. I ingratiated myself somewhat by speaking entirely in Spanish, which they fully understood. This is my 6th call to MCI since May and a credit has been issued against the final bill, though 1 call back in May should have sufficed. In short: - called MCI to disconnect on May 17th - had to stay in my place 1 month longer, so I called on May 11th to cancel the disconnect...I thought that 6 days prior was enough time - was told that their "system" did not EASILY allow for order cancellations/adjustments once placed because of the fact that they don't own the lines, …

Customer upset over Taco Bell "sauce wisdoms" Tuesday, June 06, 2006 Posted: 08:18 PM Link' WESLACO – One Valley woman says the slogan on Taco Bell’s sauce packets is offensive. As part of Taco Bell’s “Think outside the bun” campaign, the company held a contest last year for slogans to be printed on their sauce packets. Customers submitted their ideas, like “When I grow up I want to be a waterbed” and “You had me at taco”. The one that bothers Jessica Luna says, “Not to be used as a flotation device”. She tells NEWSCHANNEL 5, “Somewhere along their roots here, somebody came across the border from Mexico. Risking their lives to provide a better a life for their…

With things looking rough, everybody is looking for ways to cut back. At this point, even our cars will be affected... I've started a few things.... Cheaper oil and air filters (gotta love private brands-both are made by Wix) Changing my own brakes and rotors (something I have not tried yet) I got lucky and found some good deals on wax (mothers) to clean them up. I'm trying hard not to cheap out on the cars....gotta shop smarter. Is there anything you guys are doing on cutting back?

MUSCAT, Oman - Oman evacuated tens of thousands of people today, suspended oil exports, and closed the major port of Sohar as a weakening Cyclone Gonu roared toward the Strait of Hormuz, the world's major transport artery for Persian Gulf oil. Oil prices rose amid forecasts that the storm, a rarity in the region, was barreling toward Iran. Link: http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dl...6/NEWS/70606019

Peter Egan wrote an article in Road & Track a few years back about this topic. What is YOUR current cylinder count? A few weeks ago my cylinder count was: 1984 Dastun Maxima "Zwei" (w/sunroof): 6 1984 Dastun Maxima parts car: 6 1959 Buick LeSabre: 8 1964 Oldsmobile Super 88: 8 1977 Cadillac Coupe deVille: 8 1996 Volvo 850: 5 1997 Cadillac STS parts car: 8 TOTAL: 49 The Volvo, Super 88, Maxima "Zwei" & Coupe deVille are now gone, BUT I have acquired two more cars... The Roadmaster Estate & a very solid 1976 LeSabre 4-door Hardtop with 455 power. So now my fleet is as follows: 1984 Dastun Maxima parts car: 6 1959 Buick LeSabre: 8 1976 B…

The paper work will be filed early in the week. After that he has 7 days to change his mind if he does not change his mind he is locked in and can't go back. Then once that is done, anytime between the 7th day to the end of the year they can then let him go. Taking the $35k buy out, full pension, full health.

Well guys, this morning I had one of those moments where I was about to pull my hair out, and then my little girl (now 1 year old) did just the thing to set my day perfectly all right. I was running late, Amy (the wife) was also running late, which meant I had to pull bath duty with squirt. I'm kinda cursing under my breath, and all in all griping about having to give her a bath when she looks up at me from the tub and points at me and says "Da da". After that I just kinda had to sit in the floor and everything didn't matter from there on.... I just sat there and played with her in her tub with a grin on her face, just watching her splash around and blabber this and t…

Hey guys! My dad just got an '06 Silverado and is already planning on a new dual exhaust system. One day we were waching "Powerblock TV" on Spike and Stacey was tuning some truck and was showcaising a little gadget that you could "up" the hp of the engine if you were towing or you could lower hp and save gas mileage...... anyone know of this device, where it could be found or any other suggestions for engine management tuning? Thanks! here's the subject that will be used :)

At least for a while. My Tahoe tried to kill itself yesterday by bleeding oil all over the place. It's in the barn and parked until I can find the source of the leak - what a huge mess!

Disclaimer: this is all personal rambling. If you want to get to the meat of the story, skip the prologue. Well, as I mentioned here before, I'm entering what has turned out to be a transitional period in my life. On October 18th, I quit my job after a two-weeks notice. I had been working for Guitar Center for almost a year (about three weeks shy of that mark) earning minimum wage plus commission where it was a sales-based job. While the job was not physically taxing, it was very mentally demanding and the constant long hours left me feeling trapped and continuously fatigued. It was a very financially unpredictable job as well because of the country's unbalanced economy…

H3 'Monster HUMMER' Completes Landmark Run at Dakar For the unfamilar, the Dakar Rally is not so much a rally as it is an endurance race that traditionally originated in Paris and ended in Dakar, Senegal over some of the most unforgiving terrain in the world. Recently, the starting locale has varied, but has mostly originated in continental Europe. There are three classes of competition - Motorbike, truck (large offroad vehicles), and car. Perennial leaders like the Mitsubishi Pajero, Land Rover, and Mercedes G-Wagen compete in the car class. Likewise, the HUMMER H3 competed alongside. The Dakar Rally is comprised of fifteen individual stages. Robby Gordon - with h…

My 62 year old uncle made a new purchase about a month ago I found out. We don't see them too much do I didn't hear about it until we were at their house for Christmas this evening. He picked up a 2007 Foose Mustang convertible. Roush supercharger and everything on it, so it scoots. I know we are all GM guys here for the most part, but you have to appreciate this ride. I really wish I would have had a camera with so that I could have snapped some pics. It is black on top, and cinnamon on the bottom (a mix of orange and maroon). Foose wheels, revised front and rear fascia, new hood, roll bar. Maybe you guys don't think it is as cool as me. I'm a mustang guy at…

especially when they just back into you... One quick gift at Best Buy..and then I headed to the car... It was a crappy, cold, snowy, windy night. Got to watch an older Ram pickup back up, right into a few cars....One sadly, was mine. Once he realized he smashed a few cars, he took off...right at me! (and a few other people!) We all had to drive out of harm's way....at least everyone was ok..(snow covered though..).. Stupid truck didn't even have a plate on it.... Poor Balt has only been with me for a few days..good news (if you can call it that) is that it just cracked the front facsia (sp) underneath the front pass. headlight.... I might just buy the fa…

Read before clicking the link... I know it's a LONG read but well worth it Fisette had no idea whether he was buying King Tut’s tomb or Al Capone’s vault when he agreed to buy 21 trailers said to be full of Corvettes and Chevrolet muscle cars and parts. Luckily, all of the rumors he had heard whispered around his northeast Wisconsin home turned out to be more true than he ever dreamed. So far, Fisette, a De Pere, Wisconsin, restorer and automotive repair shop proprietor, has opened 17 of the 21 sealed trailers one-by-one and found a Yenko Camaro with 45,000 miles; a pair of low-mileage 1970 LS-6 Chevelles; a 1972 Camaro Z/28; two 1957 Corvettes, one a fuel-injected …

Last week, we get 15 inches of snow, this week, it's mostly 40s and beautiful out, the only problem is there are huge puddles everywhere from the snow melting, and in the morning it's dangerous walking to class because the sidewalks are covered in ice in some places. Tomorrow was supposed to be 55 a couple days ago, now we're getting a high of 38 with rain and high winds! Then, Sunday and Monday, we're getting rain/snow! Spring cannot come soon enough. I'm tired of winter, want to be able to wear a T-shirt and shorts, and want to be able to wash the car, which is somewhat dirty even though it just sits in the garage most of the time. Damn Mother Nature!

I've been putting in insanely long days on my project wagon since the end of last week, and tonight I was stopped in my tracks by a freaking fuel pump! Just as well I suppose, at least I'll be asleep before 4:00 A.M. tonight. I'm burnt to a crisp after this marathon, but it felt great to just decide to commit totallly to the project no matter what other concerns tried to enter the picture. Now a realatively simple repair ought to have the car running, and I can slow the pace back down to a more sane level to complete the work that remains to be done. I'm exhausted, but it is a "good" exhausted.

I think she had a Honda del Sol and lived in an earthy-crunchy place in NC like Asheville. She had cleavage shots in BOTH her avatar AND her signature. Then, when the testosterone on the site would rear its ugly head every now and then, she barked at us and disappeared. Wait, and she had cleavage shots in BOTH her avatar AND her signature? Happy birthday! If I could bake, I'm make you a great granola-chocolate birthday cake!

So, yesterday my family and friends decided to get together, pack a whole bunch of $h!, and go to the beach for father's day. They left early in the morning...like 10:30 or so...I said f@#k that noise and slept in till around noon-ish...I decided I'd just meet them at the beach. It's time to leave and right now my car is kind of out of commission for the moment...nothing serious, just doing a couple things, so I couldn't drive it, so my sister let me drive her car. So everything is all good. I get down to the beach, and you can either park in the lot for $7 bucks, or park on the side of PCH for free. I didn't have any cash on me, so I went driving up an…

So, I must rant. In the local trade book was a listing for a 1982 VW Rabbit for $600. I thought to myself "Hmm, intriguing." I decide to call the guy up for more information and set up a meet for tomorrow. A few hours later, he calls me back and asks if I'd like to look at it tonight. Sure, why not... I go on my merry little way over to check it out. It had 68k original miles, the interior was pretty much immaculate, and the exterior was fairly decent without any rust whatsoever. I'm thinking "What's the catch? It must not run very well." The guy starts up for me. Runs pretty damn good... its even inspected. Then, another guy shows up on a bike. They've either met prev…
