  8. By Maria Panaritis INQUIRER STAFF WRITER The e-mail video that General Motors Corp. sent to its Saturn dealers last night was an odd mix of apology and pep rally. The automaker had just told Congress it would do away with Saturn as part of a drastic restructuring plan to qualify GM for billions more in emergency taxpayer loans. For 209 Saturn franchises across the country - a dozen of which are in the Philadelphia area - the news was potentially devastating. "I know you've been dealing with the emotion of it, the frustration of it, maybe even the anger of it," Jill Lajdziak, general manager of Saturn, said as dealers Tom Zimbrick and Todd Ingersoll sat by he…

Industry followers more accustomed to hearing about large layoffs or sickening sales declines were startled when GM said its U.S. sales rose 3.7 percent in February, even as its two domestic rivals, Ford and Chrysler, posted sizable declines and the overall market was flat. GM’s gain in the normally soft month was led by strong demand for its sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks including the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado. Even more impressive, the gain came without the huge sales incentives of previous years. Link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17467382/

  62. BY KATIE MERX • FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER • September 21, 2008 As General Motors Corp. prepared for its centennial last week, the Free Press had a chance to talk with its top executives about when they first became aware of the corporation beyond the car brands and how they began their tenures there. Here are their stories: RICK WAGONER, chairman and CEO As a child riding the school bus in Richmond, Va., Wagoner rooted for what is now the other team. But it was through a rivalry with a fellow school-bus rider, and Chevrolet fan, that he became aware of GM as an entity in and of itself. "When I was a kid, whether I was 10 years old or 8 years old, on the school …

  63. Today at a media briefing, General Motors unveiled their next-generation EcoTec engine family. The family will go into production later this year and promises to be more refined and efficient than before. The engine family is made up of eleven different three and four-cylinder engines ranging in displacement of 1.0 to 1.5 liters. Both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged engines will be on offer and the engines have been designed with hybrid and alternate fuel configurations in the future. Power will range from 75 to 165 horsepower and 70 to 184 pound-feet or torque. "The new Ecotec architecture represents the most advanced and efficient family of small-car gas engines …

  65. Despite General Motors mostly leaving the European market with the sale of Opel and Vauxhall to PSA Group earlier this year, the automaker isn't ruling out a full-scale return. During a recent meeting of the Automotive Press Association in Detroit, GM CEO Mary Barra said the company would "absolutely" consider a return to the European market, adding that "nothing keeps us from going back." But it will be some time before GM decides to go back. According to Barra, the company would need to build out a lineup of "transformative products" like electric or self-driving vehicles to make it worthwhile. General Motors does have a small presence in Europe with Cadillacs…

WASHINGTON - The Securities and Exchange Commission has upgraded its probe of retiree-benefits accounting at General Motors Corp., making the investigation formal and giving federal regulators the power to issue subpoenas and review records. Toni Simonetti, a spokeswoman for Detroit-based GM, declined to comment. DaimlerChrysler AG said Tuesday that it had received a subpoena in September in connection with accounting issues involving retiree benefits at General Motors. Such a subpoena could only have been issued if the SEC had voted to upgrade its probe of GM to a formal investigation. SEC spokesman John Nester declined to comment. When the SEC started its probe in O…

  70. Per Bloomberg.com. GM General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker, will offer longer warranties on its vehicles in a bid to boost confidence in GM products, two people familiar with the plan said. The extended warranties mark the next phase of an eight- month-old initiative to rely less on cash incentives to generate sales, said the people, who asked not to be named because details won't be announced until later today. GM spokeswoman Mary Henige had no comment. If true I think this will work as if you want to make people feel you really have quality prove it by backing it up. It worked for Hyundai when they offered a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty after…

The GM chief executive officer unleashed scrutiny of his record after asking for a government bailout to keep the Detroit automaker in business. DETROIT -- Now that General Motors Corp. has outlined a painful plan to close factories and shed 30,000 jobs, the big question is whether a raft of vehicles debuting next year can revive its sputtering sales. The automaker will launch about 15 new vehicles next year: A new family of large SUVs, three "crossover" vehicles, a new Saturn roadster and sedan and the next generation of its full-size pickups. The new vehicles -- designed to shore up GM's strongholds and grab share of growing segments -- are critical to Chairman Rick Wagoner's comeback strategy. To quell doubts about its future, GM has allowed dealers, journalists and key analysts to…

One of the things I admire about the Toyota corporation is their clearcut brand identities. Unlike GM, who acquired all of these varying brands via buyouts, Toyota acquired brands by creating them to fill a void they saw in thier line-up. That puts Toyota at a distinct advantage over GM which has to balance the future of any brand identity with the brand's history. All Toyota has to do with its brands is deal with the future. For example, when Pontiac relaesed a Mini-van, people booed & hissed because THAT wasn't what Pontiac was supposed to be. Toyota makes Lexus whatever they want... there is no history to contend with. With that, they have a very well defin…

Simple question: What would happen if Delphi strikes and sends GM into Chapter 11? Things I think can happen: 1. Immediate renegotiation of UAW contract. 2. Immediate renegotiation of plant contracts. 3. Immediate renegotiation of Delphi and other supplier contracts. 4. Ford declaring chapter 11 also, maybe Chrysler. 5. Court letting some assets be sold off (remainder of GMAC, Hughes). 6. Freeze in product development. Things I don't think will happen but possibly could: 1. Renegotiation of dealership contracts (hoping for this one). 2. Voiding of warrenties. Also how would the stock react? How would GM be better able (or less able) to fight Toyota a…

The pickup will be available in long- and short-bed versions and two- and four-wheel drive. The engine initially runs on gas, then automatically switches over to CNG once an optimum temperature is reached. When the CNG r…

But today we are confident in this as a fresh set of spy photos have come in revealing next Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax. Both of the mules seen in the photos were caught testing on General Motors' proving grounds outside of Detroit. The Encore appears to be taking the evolutionary approach with its redesign. There is still the rounded shape and rising glass on the rear doors. A similar grille design to the Regal is up front. Chevrolet is taking a more drastic approach with the next Trax.…
